2 out of 5 stars Old and busted.......2007-05-05

I have always found this book to be cumbersome, difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in sufficient detail. But of course for years it was basically the only game in town, so everyone relied on it. Those days are over. I recently purchased Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards, and it is an outstanding book. If you're trying to decide which one to buy, definitely get Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards instead. And even if you already own Time-Saver Standards, do yourself a huge favor and buy Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards anyway. It covers everything that Time-Saver Standards does plus numerous other topics, all with much better explanations and details. To top things off, it has FAR more graphics and the entire book is better organized an easier to navigate than Time-Saver Standards.

    2 out of 5 stars Usefulness.......2006-07-16

As a practicing L.A., I have bought several McGraw-Hill Construction Books. I get a similar result each time: They seem on first look to fulfill the promise, but I found they don't well serve the need in real life. I get far better use out of Architectural Graphic Standards, and I'm looking forward to Wiley's Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards.

1 out of 5 stars buy the book, forget the CD-ROM version.......2005-03-28

I've got the book and was hoping the CD-ROM would enhance using the book, but it doesn't. The content is very slim compared to the book, and the CAD drawings that are included are also of very limited use. Don't bother with the CD-ROM version of TSSLA.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must!!!!.......2004-02-06

A great book to have. It was a required text for my site technology classes. Kept referring to it. Lots of information. It should be on everyone's bookcase if you're a Landscape Architect student or already in the profession. I highly recommend it.

                    Book Description

The CENAS Project funded by the EU as part of the Environmental Programme 1990-1994 addresses the issue of the coastland evolution of the Eastern Po Plain and future stability of the Upper Adriatic coastline in relation to mean sea level rise, natural and anthropogenic land subsidence, severe meteo-marine events and reduced sediment inflow from the watercourses. The huge amount of information needed to perform the study and the numerical models developed to make predictions of the various events are integrated into and handled by a Geographical Information System (GIS) combined with a DMRS (Data Management and Retrieval System) and a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) of the area of interest.
Numerical modelling predictions up to 2100 of the major processes which may impact on the Upper Adriatic morphodynamics point out the precariousness of this coastal environment, especially south of the Po river delta where much of the present lowland is expected to be submerged by the end of the next century and most of the area flooded during a storm with only a one-year return period.
The integrated modelling approach used in the CENAS Project is believed to be a good example of morphodynamical analysis that may be extended to other coastal areas of the world.

                                Book Description

Optical Sensing of Glucose analyzes trends in non-invasive glucose sensing and their impact on tissue optical properties. The book presents research on glucose metabolism in physiological norm and pathology, coherent and polarization properties of light scattered by tissues, and biological fluids containing glucose on physiological and hyper-physiological levels. It addresses the commercialization of glucose sensors and describes glucose-induced optical clearing effects in tissue and blood. The author also covers new optical techniques for glucose diffusion and glucose sensing based on light scattering, coherent-domain, polarization-sensitive, and optoacoustic measurements.

                                  Description:
An amperometric biosensor system which uses screen-printed electrodes to simultaneously detect d-glucose and l-lactate has been developed and applied for simple and rapid determination of d-glucose and l-lactate levels in lactic fermenting beverages. The system was constructed from three-dimensionally layered electrodes. Taking into consideration the effects of easily oxidized substances contained in the samples, ferricyanide ions, which are electrochemically oxidized at a lower voltage, were chosen as a mediator. A linear relationship between steady-state current and concentration was found over a range of 1-100mM (d-glucose) and 1-50mM (l-lactate); the variation coefficients were 1.43% (n=10) and 3.50% (n=10) for the d-glucose and l-lactate sensors, respectively. When applied to lactic fermenting beverages, there was good agreement between the results obtained by the proposed sensing system and those obtained by the HPLC method. Using the proposed method, assays were completed within 5min.

                                    Description:
A new infrared (IR) sensing system based on attenuated total reflection (ATR) to determine the levels of glucose in aqueous solutions was developed in this work. To increase the selectivity of the system, we employed glucose oxidase (GOx) to convert glucose into gluconic acid, which was the actual species detected by the IR-ATR sensor. Because gluconic acid is highly polar and was produced generally in low concentrations, the surface of the IR-ATR sensor was modified with cyclodextrin to increase the sensitivity of its detection. As a result, the sensitivity increased roughly by 100 times relative to that of the unmodified ATR. To simplify the detection system, we immobilized GOx onto the surfaces of glass beads and packed them into a column to function as an enzyme reactor. For comparison, GOx was also immobilized onto the internal surface of fused silica tubing. Glucose can be converted to gluconic acid effectively when passed through a flow system and using either packed or open tubular columns. To optimize the performance of the developed system, we investigated the effects of the pH of the sample solutions and the flow rate used to pump glucose through the system. Our results indicate that the optimal pH for the system was ca. 5; a low pH was required for high-efficiency detection of gluconic acid by the CD phase, but it lowered the efficiency of the enzymatic reactions. The flow rate exerted a small influence on the analytical signals over the examined range of flow rates because of the limited rates of the enzymatic reactions. Under the optimal conditions, the linear regression coefficients in the standard curve can be >0.99 for a concentration range of 1-50mM and a detection time of 2min. In addition, our developed system can be regenerated effectively using aqueous solutions at high pH.

                                        Description:
We describe a new approach for glucose determination with tunable glucose dynamic sensing ranges, dependent on the properties of new nanosensors, which are comprised of Con A-aggregated dextran-coated gold colloids. Dextran-coated 10 or 20nm gold colloids can be aggregated with Con A in a controlled fashion, the change in absorbance at an arbitrary wavelength used to monitor the extent of aggregation, which can be optimized for sensing. The presence of any glucose competitively binds with Con A, dissociating the dextran-coated colloids, affording for the reverse gold plasmon change and hence the determination of glucose concentrations. For one of our sensor systems, a 500K dextran-20nm gold sensor, crosslinked with 8.70@mM Con A, a change in absorbance at 650nm of 0.03 was observed, in response to as little as 3mM glucose. In contrast, a 500K dextran-10nm gold 18.7@mM Con A aggregate sensor, produced a 0.05 and 0.1 change in absorbance, respectively, by the addition of 50 and 100mM glucose. We have found that the glucose sensing ranges can be somewhat tuned by altering the properties, and therefore the extent of aggregation of the gold aggregate sensors. Reducing the gold colloid size and dextran molecular weight typically reduces the glucose sensing range (lower [glucose]) but also reduces the long-term stability of the gold aggregate sensor. Similarly the concentration of Con A used to aggregate the system also has an effect on long term sensor stability and glucose response. In this paper, we present our findings, which offer unique opportunities and perspectives for building tunable plasmonic type glucose sensors.

4 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book!.......2007-08-27

I saw this book when I was browsing through the bookstore, was intrigued by the title, bought it and gave it a shot. It was definitely worth it. Definitely a good book for the distraction I needed, and a good, believeable story. The characters in the book were well-developed, and the three sisters- Nessa, Cate, and Bree were very likeable. You really felt what each was going through. I felt Nessa's pain of losing trust in the man you've slept next to for the last ten years and discovering he's not the person you think he is. It really put you in her shoes, as if it was affecting you, and what is running through the minds of many women unfortunate enough to have an unfaithful spouse. I felt for Cate when she was struggling with her agonizing decision, and her reasoning in the book was pretty spot on with what many women go through in her situation. Bree's situation brought me back to the time when I was younger, wondering why I attract all the "weirdos". It has a nice, lighthearted ending, But at the same time, I'm glad the author kept it realistic and didn't go too over the top with the prince charming, fluffy endings of too many chick lit books out there. I look forward to seeing more from Shelia O'Flannagan!

4 out of 5 stars Great Traveling Book.......2006-01-31

I wanted a book to entertain me while traveling and this book did the trick. (I needed a book that I would not feel out of touch if I was not able to pick it up for a couple weeks.) Nessa, Cate and Bree made me laugh, yell, etc. with the sibling problems and love for one another. Through thick and thin your sisters will always be there for you.

This is the first book I've read from Sheila O'Flanagan and I really enjoyed it. I plan to read more of her books in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and true to life.......2004-04-14

Keeping in mind European relationships are vastly different than American, I found this book to be extremely entertaining. The relationships between the sisters rang true, the narration rang true, the whole book rang true...

                                          3 out of 5 stars Annoying Characters!.......2004-01-29

This book was good- it would have been great if two out of the three main characters weren't so grating on the nerves. While older sister Nessa was portrayed very accurately as a nagging, uptight, meddlesome worrier...after a while I just wanted to scream!! Half of the nagging was unneccessary for the plot or character development- and it just left me aggitated.

However, the younger sister, Bree, is what really took away from this book. The lack of reality that went into developing this character is mind-blowing. O'Flanagan is almost partronizing any reader who attempts to learn about Bree....does O'Flanagan honestly think that Michael was ever Bree's "boyfriend?" Let me just say, the continuous referral to Bree's "ex-boyfriend" (whom she ALMOST, but never did kiss- at the age of 25....) left me wondering just how immature the writer, or the reader, was expected to be to believe this. At first I was able to dismiss it, thinking this continuous reference to the guy she "loved" after three dates, who was her "boyfriend" even though they never even kissed, was O'Flanagan's way of expressing Bree's immaturity and lack of experience. However, when the seemingly worldly sisters started referring to Michael as Bree's "ex-boyrfriend" I just about stopped reading this book altogether.

Aside from this, the only character that really did it for me was Cate. But unfortunately, the author only skims the surface with her, and we are left seeing her through other character's eyes, rather than directly into her.

The plot was great. I can only imagine how wonderful this book COULD have been with better characters.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining relationship drama.......2003-12-31

In Ireland, of the three Driscoll siblings, Nessa seems to be the one to have it all together. She has lived in comfort as a Riley with Adam for almost a decade and they have an eight year old child. Her sisters Cate and Bree are poster girls for failed relationships.

However, Nessa believes paradise may be lost as evidence mounts that Adam is cheating especially when she consults her horoscope. Nessa wonders what to do as economically she cannot just dump Adam. She has no one to turn to for advice as her mother lives on the other side of the once emerald isle; Cate the crabby one is having problems with her boyfriend radio host Finn over her pregnancy; and finally Bree the mechanic has a host of trouble as she can't get to work on time though Adam keeps her supplied with repairs and the father of her boyfriend is in love with her.

HE'S GOT TO GO is an entertaining relationship drama starring three solid female protagonists about a decade apart in age and even further distanced in how they see male partners. The story line effortlessly swings back and before between the three women though the concentration is more on Nessa, but does not neglect Cate and Bree. The characters are all well developed, not just the three Driscoll sisters. Though the ending ties up for the most part the lives of Nessa and Cate and to a lesser degree Bree, it feels much too crammed inside a short climax. Still the audience will enjoy this fine tale and want to seek more works by Sheila O'Flanagan.
