Book Description
Here, the modeling of dynamic biological engineering processes is presented in a highly understandable way using a unique combination of simplified fundamental theory and direct hands-on computer simulation. Throughout, the mathematics is kept to a minimum, yet the 60 simulation examples supplied on a CD-ROM with this second edition illustrate almost every aspect of biological engineering science. Many of the examples are taken from the authors' own research, and each is described in detail, including the model equations. The programs are written in the modern user-friendly simulation language Berkeley Madonna, which runs on both Windows PC and Power-Macintosh computers.
Madonna solves models comprising many ordinary differential equations using very simple programming, yet is so powerful that the model parameters may be defined as "sliders", which allow the effect of their change on the model behavior to be seen almost immediately. Users may include data for curve fitting, and perform sensitivity or multiple runs. The results can be seen simultaneously on multiple-graph windows or by using overlays - resulting in a tremendous learning effect.
The authors' extensive experience, both in university teaching and international courses, is reflected in this well-balanced presentation, which is suitable for teachers, students, biochemists and engineers. The result is a greater understanding of the formulation and use of mass balances and kinetics for biological reaction engineering, written in a most stimulating manner.

Book Description
Introductory physics attracts a wide variety of students, with different backgrounds, levels of preparedness, and academic destinations. To many, the course is one of the most daunting in the science curriclum, full of arcane principles that are difficult to grasp. To others, it is one of the most highly anticipated -the first step on the path to the upper reaches of scientific inquiry. In their years as instructors and as editors of The Physics Teacher, Clifford E. Swartz and the late Thomas Miner developed and encountered many innovative and effective ways of introducing students to the fundamental principles of physics. Teaching Introductory Physics brings these strategies, insights and techniques to you in a unique, convenient volume. This is a reference and a tutorial book for teachers of an introductory physics course at any level. It has review articles on most of the topics of introductory physics, providing background information and suggestions about presentation and relative importance. Whether you are teaching physics for the first time or are an experienced instructor, Teaching Introductory Physics will prove to be an exceptionally helpful classroom companion. The book should be particularly useful for graduate students teaching for the first time and for research physicists who have not taught the introductory course recently. Teaching Introductory Physics gives you access to the cumulative expertise of the world's most dedicated physics instructors-not just Professor Swartz and Miner, but many of the contributors and subscribers to the Physics Teacher. it is sure to enhance your teaching skills, helping you to give your students the basic knowledge and hands-on experience they need to work with the fundamental physical laws of nature. About the Authors: Clifford E. Swartz has been the Editor of The Physics Teacher for the greater part of the last 30 years and is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 1983, Dr. Swartz received the Outstanding Civillian Service Medal from the Department of the Army and in 1987 he received the Oersted Medal from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). He has authored 33 books for students from kindergarten to grduate school. Thomas Miner (1911-1991) was a physics teacher at Garden City High School from 1932 to 1966 and Assistant Professor of Physics at Yeshiva University from 1966 to 1972. For the next 16 years he served as Associate Editor of the Physics Teacher. In 1980, Dr. Miner received the Millikan Award from AAPT. He was the author of five books and numerous professional papers.
Book Description
What we have here is another mighty slim volume from Michael Feldman, best known (when known at all) for his public radio show "Whad'ya Know" (sic). Feldman, who spouts off about things he knows "not much" about weekly, here writes them down:
· how to get your own radio show and what you can do with it once you do
· paranoia
· marriage (or as Feldman likes to refer to it, "a long-term bad relationship")
· Hitler
· SUVs
· child-rearing (although it sounds like it's the author who is being reared)
· a number of short pieces on places he and his crew have visited for their "remote possibilities"
· more references to "gentiles" than absolutely necessary (seems to be an issue for Feldman, although he is tickled with the
notion that, to a Mormon, he is one)
· some attempts to misrepresent scientific or social research for humorous purposes
· many personal revelations that prove the examined life is not necessarily worth living either
· and pages and pages of fluff.
Mr. Feldman has not been compared, to our knowledge, to S. J. Perlman.
But here is some of what Michael Feldman says in Something I Said:
"The paranoid no longer is: paranoia has outlived its usefulness when everybody is out to get us."
"Take the phrase 'no problem': I can use it, although it is the very opposite of my two-word world view ('Nothing works')."
"Whatever latitude beauty may have in the eye of the beholder, funny is not readily apparent to all, and, who knows, they may be right. More importantly, they may be bigger."
Includes a music CD by Michael Feldman and John Sieger.

Heir Apparent to Dave Barry.......2004-10-27
In his hilarious new collection of reflections upon marriage, family, and life in the midwest, Michael Feldman reveals himself to be the heir apparent to Dave Barry. Feldman, host of public radio's "Whad'ya Know?" gives Garrison Keillor a run for his money as the humorous voice of the heartland--with a heart. Included is a music CD "My Life, the Musical." songs Feldman has written over the years with John Sieger, who also provides the riotous cartoon illustrations. Just in time for Christmas giving for that public radio fan--or anybody who doesn't mind laughing out loud!

Book Description
When Justine and Barry meet during a plane crash just before the Christmas holidays, the relationship that follows is wild, turbulent, and maybe, just maybe, a keeper. Justine is a pretty, smart, ambitious lawyer who's tired of being set up on lousy dates. Her eighteen-hour work days get in the way of finding Mr. Right, but she'd rather be home with her dog, drinking salad dressing for dinner and watching The Sound of Music on the VCR anyway. Barry is a good-looking food product manager living on the Upper West side with a rich roommate who is juggling three girlfriends at once but never has the rent. Barry seeks his soulmate, but the fact that he hasn't had a date in a year makes things a little tougher. A comic urban romance about the possibilities and impossibilities of love. Was it Something I Said? is a classic "will they or won't they?" for the nineties that will keep readers guessing until the very end.
Customer Reviews:
Corporate-level chicklit.......2007-01-28
A nice single thirty-something food company marketing executive (male) falls in love at first sight with a nice single thirty-something Manhattan lawyer (female) and they have many misunderstandings that push them apart, which is what is supposed to keep up the suspense, so I won't spoil the plot by telling you what happens in the end. It contains a lot of information about what it's like to be a food company marketing executive or a Manhattan corporate lawyer.
It is well written and enjoyable, with some amusing satire on the New York legal and business scene. There are some confusing flashbacks. The fourth star has to be denied, perhaps unfairly, because it attempts to hit targets that have been hit harder by better writers. Here are my unfair comparisons: For the basic plot of course there's Helen Fielding's "Bridget Jones's Diary"and Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice"; for lifestyles of the New York rich and infamous, Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities"; for yiddishkeit almost any Philip Roth and Dan Greenberg's "How to be a Jewish Mother." Take this to the beach after you've read all of the above.
Not Your Typical Love Story.......2006-11-11
It took me awhile to get "into" this book, but Valerie Block is a strong writer, so overall I quite enjoyed it. The book starts off rather exciting....with our two main characters meeting on an airplane. Their developing romance reminded me of the realities I endured while dating (some 15 years ago). My how time flies. She reminded me that we each have our own neurotic likes and dislikes in a mate, and we each come with our own strange habits and perceptions. The author pokes fun at each character and some Jewish stereotypes. Fun, easy read.
Annoying at best.......2006-11-07
I made it to page 82, then came here to read the reviews to see if it was going to get any better. I didn't like any of the characters.
And the choppy style
jumping back and forth
between past and present
and unlikeable people
was very annoying.
I found myself not caring about their petty dramas and superficial angst. So glad to see my gut feeling was right, it's a real stinker.
Thanks to the reviews here I won't waste anymore time on this dreary book.
Writing was fine, just didn't like the characters..........2006-04-15
I'm not saying that it was horrible - it just wasn't that great or that good. When you don't really like the two lead characters, it is hard to like the book even if the basic writing works. I knew it was going downhill when the "couple" met during a plane crash and shared their first kiss while the plane was going down. I should mention that they shared their first kiss after both or at least one of them vomitted. The rest of the story was more grounded in reality but it still didn't grab me.
nasty unloving people with horrible jobs.......2003-08-19
I feel a little silly for having bought the paperback at full price...I enjoyed the first few pages as I read it in the bookstore, but these characters are not ones who you want to live with over three hundred and fifty pages. Neither of them is a prize - Justine is an uptight workaholic with an intermittent sex drive, Barry an obnoxious marketer, both with unrealistically high estimates of their appeal to other people.
Is it a love story? can't be, because it's hard to imagine what they see in each other. A book to make you realize how repulsive it could be to live in NYC on 180k/year.

Book Description
"We're proud to introduce a new, controversial, dynamic book featuring hard-ball prose, and social/racial storytelling delivered with deadly force - a Hell-fire and brimstone style. No other opinionated writer can stand up against the wit and versatility that comes through this obviously caring, unchained package af experiential thoughts and urban prose.
"Engaging and clever as any recent radical Black writer, produced by the same concrete jungles that have given America Jazz, Hip-Hop and baggy pants, I Beg Your Damn Pardon literally kept both Blacks and Whites on our staff turning its pages and debating the serious issues raised - long into the night.
"I Beg Your Damn Pardon is a red, black, and green-poetic magnum opus of "truth-telling," as echoed from the heart of a Black American. This book, this classic work, demands honest critique and an open mind, as the contents slam us into the often hidden face of Black folk. Sometimes it's an angry face, still standing in the shadows of prejudice and hate holding an "alley-apple" (a red house brick) used for throwing at one's enemies. Alley-apples can hurt us as projectiles when thrown at us, but this book is a well-composed, hard-hitting canon. Definitely a must-read. Just know when to duck!"

The Best Veterinarian Book Since Herriot!!.......2006-05-30
This is a great book for those of us in the Animal Industry as well as those people who just love animals and the Western "way of life." As the Animal Scientist for Eastern New Mexico University I especially appreciated the trials and tribulations of large animal work. In addition, I was thoroughly impressed with Dr. Browder for recognizing and giving credit to those around him who have contributed to his success. It is truly an educational and inspirational work. In the end, I am glad Dr. Browder "Said Something." A must read!!

KUDOS to Dr. Browder for saying something good.......2006-05-19
I got home about 8:00 p.m. the evening that I received my copy of this book in the mail. I started reading it and couldn't lay it down until I had read the whole thing. Dr. Browder writes in a way that draws the reader in and makes the events of his life very real. It is heartwarming and, much like the James Herriot books, makes the reader fall in love with the animals, people and events that surround a veterinarian's life. I wish I would have met some of the characters he tells about. They are the sort of people who make others better. As Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University (Dr. Browder's alma mater) I have made sure that his book has been added to our library's collection.
