Book Description
This text provides a background view of the object approach, related geometric aspects, the different level of data modelling and the role of geo-information theory. The rest of the book builds upon these concepts describing the applicability of broader aspects such as topology, thematic object classes and class heirarchies, object aggregation and generalization and uncertainty.
Book Description
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and related spatial technologies have a new and powerful role to play in archaeological interpretation. Beginning with a conceptual approach to the representation of space adopted by GIS, this book examines spatial databases; the acquisition and compilation of data; the analytical compilation of data; the analytical functionality of GIS; and the creation and utilization of critical foundation data layers such as the Digital Elevation Model (DEM). The ways in which GIS can most usefully facilitate archaeological analysis and interpretation are then explored particularly as a tool for the management of archaeological resources. Formal analysis of archaeological material, and the use of trend surface, contouring and interpolation procedures are considered along with predictive modeling analysis of visibility and intervisibility. Finally there is a discussion of leading-edge issues, including three-dimensional GIS, object-oriented GIS, the relationship between GIS and 'Virtual Reality' technologies, and the integration of GIS with distributed systems and the Internet. The approach is light, and technical detail is kept to a minimum, recognizing that most readers are simply interested in using GIS effectively. The text is carefully illustrated with worked case-studies using archaeological data. Spatial Technology and Archaeology provides a single reference source for archaeologists, students, professionals, and academics in archaeology as well as those in anthropology and related disciplines.

An Excellent Introduction to Spatial Analysis.......2000-01-24
This is a great book that was a real help in getting me through school and in my first jobs afterwards. It provides the clearest explanation of various spatial statistical techniques that I found (after an extensive literature review for a Masters thesis). The software package is great, particularly because it allows the reader to see all the theory in action in a graphical way.

Book Description
Spatial uncertainty analysis has become a recognized discipline that integrates expertise from geographic information science, remote sensing, spatial and classical statistics and many others. The chapters are divided into two sections; the first section concentrates on accuracy assessment issues and the second on modelling uncertainty. This book will be useful both to those new to spatial uncertainty assessment and to experienced practitioners. Those interested in the application of appropriate uncertainty assessment techniques are provided with examples of many applications based in remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). For researchers, this book presents a snapshot of the state-of-the-art of uncertainty assessment, providing theoretical chapters based in classical and spatial statistics.
Book Description
In both the physical and social sciences, there are now available large spatial data sets with detailed local information. Global models for analyzing these data are not suitable for investigating local variations; consequently, local models are the subject of much recent research. Collecting a variety of models into a single reference, Local Models for Spatial Analysis explains in detail a variety of approaches for analyzing univariate and multivariate spatial data. Different models make use of data in unique ways, and this book offers perspectives on various definitions of what constitutes "local," varying spatial scales, and nonstationary models. The author discusses analyses of single variables on grids, multiple variables, deterministic approaches to spatial prediction, geostatistical prediction, and point patterns. He uses numerous worked examples, illustrations, and case studies to shed light on issues involved in implementing the concepts in practice, and makes use of physical and social science data sets. In each chapter, the book follows a consistent format that introduces global approaches followed by corresponding local approaches, providing an assessment of the suitability of various methods in particular situations. Combining a valuable array of tools for GIScience and GISystems, Local Models for Spatial Analysis guides you in selecting and applying the most appropriate model for a given purpose and set of data.

Field Methods in Remote Sensing
ASIN: 156670443X |
Book Description
The development of robust accuracy assessment methods for the validation of spatial data represents a difficult challenge for the geospatial science community. Obstacles to robust assessments include continuous data characteristics and positional errors, demanding ongoing development by GIS and remote sensing experts. Based upon a special symposium sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Remote Sensing and GIS Accuracy Assessment evaluates the important scientific elements related to the performance of accuracy assessments for remotely sensed data, GIS data analysis, and integration products. Scientists from federal, state, and local governments, academia, and nongovernmental organizations present twenty technical chapters that examine sampling issues, reference data collection, edge and boundary effects, error matrix and fuzzy assessments, error budget analysis, and change detection accuracy assessment. The book includes the keynote presentation by Russell G. Congalton that provides a historical accuracy assessment overview, articulatescurrent technical shortcomings, and identified numerous issues that were debated throughout the symposium. All chapters underwent a peer review and were determined to be valuable to the remote sensing and GIS community. The editors arranged the chapters as a series of complementary scientific topics to provide you with a detailed treatise on spatial data accuracy assessment issues.

Book Description
Spatial models have been in existence in the environmental and social sciences for a long time. More recently, specialised software for the capture, manipulation and presentation of spatial data, which can be referred to as `Geographical Information Systems' (GIS), have vastly increased the range of possibilities of organising spatial data by new and efficient ways of spatial integration and spatial interpolation. Coupled with the improvements in data availability and increases in computer memory and speed, these novel techniques give rise to new types of spatial models which exploit the technological potential now available, make better use of existing data, stimulate the collection of new data and open up new ways of working with geographic information. This book explores the potential and impact of GIS on spatial modelling.

Book Description
If they could do it all over again, they might not...so it's a good thing none of the women in this hilarious collection had the foresight to make good decisions during these travel experiences. If they had, we wouldn't hear the delicious details of how horribly wrong it all went. Like Marrit Ingman's disastrous honeymoon in Maui—and the repercussions of societal pressure for the perfect love escape in paradise. Or of how the entire kitchen of C. Lill Ahrens's new Seoul apartment is literally lost in translation. Or why Ayun Halliday would attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, when her training consisted of drinking beer and rolling her own cigarettes, and her gear cost $14.99 at Sportmart. From Kandahar to Baja to Moscow, these wry, amusing stories capture the comic essence of bad travel, and of the female experience on the road.
Customer Reviews:
Funny For Travelers and Non-travelers Alike.......2006-03-31
As an adventure-averse person, I howled at these stories of being on vacation and trapped in a situation: in Judith Levin's case, being unable to "make caca"...in Ayun Halliday's, climbing a big mountain with unsupportive teammates, etc. So I assumed this book was just for people (like me) who like to feel superior to those crazy traveler-types. But then I bought the book for my friend who is a committed world-traveler, and she, too, laughed out loud with recognition. Great summer read.
A funny survey of how even the best-laid plans of women can go awry.......2005-10-11
If you like your travel with a healthy dash of comedy, don't miss The Risks Of Sunbathing Topless And Other Funny Stories From The Road, a funny survey of how even the best-laid plans of women can go awry. From a horror story of being trapped with Frog Man to a trip with a dog unfortunately not as nice as Lassie, The Risks Of Sunbathing Topless is for perfect leisure laughs.
