5 out of 5 stars My kids loved this and I loved their learning!.......2004-12-30

As a teacher and home schooling mom, I've used this both with a class and with my own kids. The cards are great for language development as well as natural history, science. Since they're in card rather than book format, it's easy to use them for all kinds of games: putting the cards ofr each animal in order, finding the baby, adult or picture of feeding and explaining the differences between how each animal does this...

        Book Description

This text was written in response to a large movement which promotes writing across the science curriculum. While it includes topics such as how to write lab reports and/or scientific paper for publication, the focus is on writing as means of learning science. Based on the popular "Writing to Learn Biology" (by Moore), this second text addresses a range of topics from biology, chemistry, and physics.

                Book Description

The intent of this book is to describe how a professor can provide a learning environment that assists students to come to grips with the nature of science and engineering, to understand science and engineering concepts, and to solve problems in science and engineering courses. As such, this book is intended to be useful for any science or engineering professor, who wants to change their course to include more effective teaching methods, to instructors at post-secondary institutions, who are beginning their careers, and as a handbook for TA’s. Since the book is based upon articles that I have had published in Science Educational Research and which are grounded in educational research that I have performed (both quantitative and qualitative) over many years, it will also be of interest to anyone engaged in research into teaching science and engineering at the post-secondary level. I have also tried to include enough background so that the book could be used as a textbook for a course in educational practice in science and engineering.

The book has two main axes of development. Firstly, how do we get students to change their epistemology so that their outlook on the course material is not that it consists of a tool kit of assorted practices, classified according to problem type, but rather that the subject comprises a connected structure of concepts. Secondly, helping students to have a deeper understanding of science and engineering.

Randy Moore offers friendly, clear suggestions about writing research papers and lab reports. Although this book is an ideal complement to the Moore Botany text-complete with direct references to the text-it may be used with any science text for a course at any level. And its broader applications will serve your students long after the course is completed.

5 out of 5 stars Great text book for geological remote sensing.......1999-09-17

This is a great text book for understanding and mastering the concepts of geological remote sensing. Dr. Vincent best illustrated the physical and geological features of geological remote sensing, and made them easy to understand.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely poor text........1999-05-07

This book should have never made it through a peer review process. It is hard to believe that the author was allowed to display so much opinion and mis-information. Refrences to geology in this text are inacurate and pose a matter of debate of the author's credibility.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely poor textbook.......1999-05-07

This book lacks any new science. The author's "tangents" into other aspects of geology are often inacurate and misleading to students of any level. The author's claims of science and discovery are eccentric and very odd to read. This book needed a more detailed peer review process.

1 out of 5 stars This is not a good textbook........1998-12-28

This book could benefit from a rigorous peer review. Complex theory is over-simplified and misleading inferences are made on seemingly every other page. The typographical errors were fustrating.

1 out of 5 stars This book is terrible........1998-11-03

No new science here. Pieces and parts borrowed from exisiting bodies of research muddled with inaccuracies.

She provides a brief and informative introduction to each writer with a biographical sketch that includes the author's motivation and history including family, education, career and works published.

Whether or not you recognize the authors' names or publications, you will enjoy reading about their lives. You will identify with some of their experiences and you will be amazed to discover their secrets and truths.

The excerpts of autobiographies are as diverse as the authors themselves. They give insight into these women's lives and personal experiences revealing them to be fascinatingly unique and at the same time ordinary. Their stories are enticing, humorous, poignant, informative, and genuine. They form an excellent illustration of the modern feminine experience. This book is outstanding.
