Petroleum is not as easy to find as it used to be. In order to locate and develope reserves efficiently, it is vital that geologists and geophysicists understand the geological processes that affect a reservoir rock and the oil that is trapped within it. This book is about how and to what extent, these processes may be understood. The theme of the book is the characterisation of fluids in sedimentary basins, understanding their interaction with each other and with rocks, and the application of this information to finding, developing and producing oil and gas. The first part of the book describes the techniques, and the second part relates real life case histories covering a wide range of applications. Petroleum geology, particularly exploration, involves making the best of incomplete results. It is essentially an optimistic exercise. This book will remove some of the guesswork.

Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The "Willardson and Beer" Series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in publishing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded.
Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.

There is acute interest in being able to fabricate devices using silicon-germanium compounds or alloys, in the context of conventional silicon production techniques. The authors examine the various materials processing and fundamental properties here.

As they suggest, being able to economically make a direct band gap SiGe alloy layer inside a Si heterostructure sandwich could enable a Si-based device that is sensitive in the visible spectrum. And that hopefully has fair efficiency in converting incoming photons into current. The promise is that a SiGe alloy can be made with similar lattice constants to Si, and similar thermal expansion coefficients. So a device might be easier to make than trying to integrate Si and GaAs/GaAlAs, with their quite disparate properties.

Also, if the above becomes possible, then it might also be economic to build an LED or laser, emitting in this wavelength range, and fully integrated with current Si VLSI.

Book Description

Biaxial strain in coherent GeSi layers grown on Si substrates provides a powerful tool for tailoring bandgaps and band offsets. Extremely high electron and hole mobilities have been obtained in modulation-doped GeSistrained layer heterostructures. Ultra-high-speed Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors and MODFETs and long wavelength (1 to 20 um) IR Detectors have been fabricated using these layers. Quantum wells, ultra-thin period superlattices, and quantum dots can also be fabricated using the strained layers. These devices were previously implemented using III-V semiconductors. Now they can be fabricated using existing Si technology, which is mature and reliable. GeSi strained layer technology has made it possible tomanufacture monolithic Si integrated circuits containing heterojunction devices. Jains monograph, the first of its kind, covers the fundamental physics of strained layers, theory, design, and characteristics of the GeSi heterostructure devices.

And my review:

Well, after reading the other reviews of this book, I expected a knock-your-socks-off, laugh-out-loud read. Instead, what I got was a book that was only mildly entertaining, and made me crack a smile at times.

I admit, this author is pretty good with comedy. Most authors who try to write comedy lay it on too thick, or just try too hard, leaving the humor feeling forced. The humor wasn't forced in CHERRY ON TOP, but it just wasn't all that funny. I would smile a few times at something amusing, but it wasn't anything that was going to make me laugh out loud. And when I read a book that supposed to be a romantic comedy, well, I expect it to move me to belly laughter. This book fell short of that mark.

The plot of this book was interesting, and fast paced, which is what kept me reading. But the characters always felt a little flat to me. I felt that the author focused more on character quirks (examples: Luke chews gum like it's lifesaving medication; Cherry has a tattoo on her stomach that itches whenever a big life change is iminent) than on character development. I never felt like I really knew who these people were. They were just there. This was especially the case with Luke. And I found Cherry kind of immature at times. It took her a long time to learn the lesson that a person should be true to themselves. I actually found that I liked Cherry's sister Liz more than I liked Cherry.

And, unfortunately, I didn't find the romance all that inspiring. The emotions just didn't ring true with me. I felt that there wasn't much more than physical attraction drawing Luke and Cherry together, and I need more for a satisfying romance. Not that this was a lust-soaked book, because it wasn't. But it also wasn't very romantic. There were no "warm fuzzies" generated by this book.

Still, it was worth a one-time read, but it's not a keeper book. If you still want to read it, I would recommend that you try to borrow it from the library.

Light & Witty.......2006-02-17

Cherry Harte's life has not been easy or pretty. She has a very long list of things she would love to change. The Jersey girl's mother is currently serving time for embezzlement, and her con artist father took off for points unknown years ago. To top it off, her fiancee jilts her on their wedding day. Immediately afterwards, however, her luck changes when she and her sister win the lottery. Finally, Cherry has the opportunity and means to reinvent herself. The sisters move to Mystic Beach, Florida, and Cherry embarks on her new life.

Once in Mystic Beach, Cherry puts her plans into action and soon accomplishes most of her goals. The only thing that remains is attaining membership in the local Women's League. Instead of being the misfit outsider, she will finally belong! On her way to the final League interview, Cherry's car breaks down. Enter former reporter, current mechanic Luke Chance. Burned by a rich society woman before, Luke is determined to ignore the feisty Cherry and her considerable charms. Unable to fix her car immediately, he loans her his truck, thus insuring they will meet again.

Their instant but unacknowledged attraction gradually blossoms into full fledged desire, yet they have no business getting involved. Luke has no love for society types, and Cherry has her busy life plan. Besides, Cherry's membership in the Women's League hinges on her securing city approval for their planned horticultural center, while Luke represents a group proposing a youth center on the same site. Beyond all that, the ex-reporter senses that Cherry is hiding something. He knows someone tampered with her car. There is a story there, and Luke will find it!

Cherry On Top is a light and witty romp. Cherry and Luke are two engaging characters who are dealing with past hurts. I could feel their attraction and wanted them to be together. The secondary players are hilarious and get progressively wackier. I do wonder, is it possible to know that many eccentrics? The ultimate chicanery is almost too much. Nonetheless, Cherry On Top is a quick, fun, and very tasty treat. If you are looking for a little comic romantic escape, give it a read.

Cherry On Top delivers.......2005-12-30

Cherry On Top by Kathleen Long is a sensational book about wanting more but realizing you have it right in front of you.

Cherry Harte is trying to reinvent herself after she and her sister win the lottery. Cherry has set up a new life in Mystic Beach Florida. She wants to be accepted by the elite at the local Women's League. But her plans are slowing coming undone by her attraction to the local mechanic, Luke Chance.

Luke Chance had returned to Mystic Beach to work on cars after his reporter's career blew up in his face. Luke has had his fill of rich society women and he is determined not to let Cherry get under his skin. The youth center that Luke supports is going head to head against the Women's Leagues pet project for funding. Now Cherry is always in his line of vision and Luke can't keep his hands off of her. Plus someone is threatening Cherry and her family, this brings out the protectiveness and Luke's reporters nose for a story.

Cherry On Top is another gem by Kathleen Long. Cherry and Luke's chemistry is explosive. Both have past that are still affecting them deeply. The secondary characters in this story are a real treat. Looking forward to more from Ms. Long.

In New Jersey, Bart Matthews leaves his fiancée Cherry Harte at the altar. Not long afterward Cherry and his sister Liz win a multi-million dollar lottery. With her mom in jail for embezzling and their con artist father vanished for over a decade, the siblings decide to relocate to Mystic Beach, Florida with Cherry planning to reinvent her life.

In Mystic Beach, Cherry's Jag breaks down, but mechanic Luke Chance tells her to wait her turn or borrow his truck. As they become better acquainted an attraction springs up between them. However, the former journalist refuses to have anything with the novella riche as he has a lingering bad taste from a similar female. Besides she wants to join the Women's League that is competing with him for conversion of property; the league wants to establish a horticultural center while he and his side a youth center.

CHERRY ON TOP is an engaging contemporary romance starring two likable lead characters. Cherry is an eccentric female who wants to shed her family's scandalous past in order to become accepted by "polite society" even if she has to buy her way into the group. Luke refuses to take a chance on anyone rich especially a lottery winner. Though the intrigue seems unnecessary and over the top, Kathleen Long provides a fun tale with zany eccentrics rounding out the fine starring couple.

I was so pleased with this book after I purchased it, that I read it aloud to two autistic classrooms at a local public school. The children immediately joined in with me, repeating the phrase "With a cherry on top!" throughout the reading session. These special children were engaged and empowered to be participating together in such a happy and positive story that underscores love and family. Upon returning to visit these classrooms, the teachers have informed me that the children are now obsessed with cherries and the value of expressing their love for not only their Mommys, but also their friends and teachers! The book is instantly relatable and well worth buying and sharing with all children in your life...a great little find!

This little book combines the heartfelt joy of loving a child with the mischievous fun of being a child- resulting in a story both adults and children can relate to and enjoy time after time. The illustrations are full of energy, colorful and imaginative, and closely follow the mood and ideas of the story. For the pre-reading child there is plenty to look at while the story is being read, while the older child will also find satisfaction in the bold, powerful language of the text.

I'd recommend With a Cherry on Top for anyone who has ever loved a child, and for the children they love.
