Book Description
Since starting their practice in 1986, Iranian-born, American-educated sisters Gisue and Mojgan Hariri have earned widespread praise for their ambitious body of work. Their up-to-the-minute recasting of classical modernist principles has made them a source of continuing inspiration to design students and professionals alike. Over the course of recent years, the Hariris' portfolio has expanded from small-scale commissions to widely celebrated projects, including the much lauded "Digital House" and the first house to be completed at The Houses at Sagaponac, the ambitious Hamptons development. Among the projects featured in Hariri & Hariri: Houses—illustrated in plans, drawings, and splendid full-color photography—are a new house for the AQUA development in Miami Beach; spectacular urban renovations in New York City; and magnificent new houses across the country, as well as international projects, all of which demonstrate the ability of the Hariris to combine modernist rigor with what New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger identified as an "understanding of the patterns of everyday life."

Hariri, Hariri.......2007-03-21
Excellent collection of stunning photos by incredible team! I can look at these photos for hours and still find something to admire!
Great Visuals.......2007-01-16
Somewhat of a coffee table type book - not much technical stuff...nonetheless the pictures of the great homes are worth the price of this publication. Nicely photographed material that provides much design inspiration.
Beautiful, Dramatic, and Still Fairly Small Houses.......2006-03-31
To word it simply, the houses designed by the Hariri sisters are the most dramatic small buildings I have ever seen. Here you will not find gigantic homes built to use size to impress. The Spartan House, built in the Hague, Netherlands was required to have a house footprint no bigger than 26 by 33 feet. Yet even in that small a space their house standa out.
More than just the exterior design, Hariri houses have an integrated feeling that the rooms flow from one to another following the function that is needed with a minimal disruption to the esthetic sense.
Their houses are modern, some even ultra modern, combining the look of steel and glass with the natural look of wood and rock. All appear to be designed to have an absolutely minimal amount of maintenance and a lifetime that will be close to forever.
Some of the houses shown here are just design studies, the Digital House, where the walls are made of LCD's. Others have been built literally around the world.
When you are getting ready to do your new beach house in Miami, here would be a good place to start looking.

Richard Meier is one of the most renowned architects working today. His works are characterized by their rationalism, their rather detached purity, and their large expanses of reticulated forms masterfully articulating voids and solids. An architect obsessed with visual effects, Meier is known for such large-scale projects as the Getty Center in Los Angeles. This oversize book, however, concentrates solely on Meier's residential works. Fourteen houses are featured through dramatic color photos of both interior and exterior side by side with drawings, plans, and reflections of both the architect and his clients. A bibliography and a chronology of all of Meier's residential projects, both built and unbuilt, complete this visually stunning volume.
Book Description
This oversized book presents 14 built American houses by one of the world's most influential and widely emulated architects. New color interior and exterior photography as well as drawings, plans, clients' personal reflections, and the architect's insight accompany each house. With a chronology of all of Meier's built and unbuilt residential projects, this is a most beautiful and valuable reference for admirers of his work.
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent Whiteness.......2005-04-08
I must confess I love Richard Meier's work. His structures are so clean and modern, I love the use of glass and light. Honestly, if I where fabulously wealthy he would be the first person I called to build my house, and I would pay him anything. Nobody designs a house like Mr. Meier and this book does a grand job of illustrating that point.. the photographs are first rate and the colors are sharp. The latter is so important when doing a book on his work because the play of light on white is what his buidings are all about. All of his best houses before 97 are covered and they are all given the royal treatment. If you love clean crisp modern design then buy this wonderful book on this master architects work, you won't be disappointed.
Modernist dream.......2000-12-09
In a word,Light. Meier's ability to use light like a fine instrument is a site to behold. For those not knowledgeable of Richard Meier's masterpieces, you will be forced to become believers that although stark and sometimes serene modern architecture in his hands becomes true art.For modern architecture lovers this is a must read. Beautifully bound, and wonderfully sized this volume will be a welcome anchor on any coffee table.
Dynomite.......1997-12-23
This book is fantastic if you are a fan of modern resisential architecture that is not so avante-guard to be uninhabitable. Photos are excellent. I only wish there were more of the interiors.

Book Description
American Dream documents the Houses at Sagaponac, a groundbreaking architecture project initiated by real estate developer Harry J. Brown. The project features homes designed by internationally recognized architects on a 10-acre site near the tip of Long Island. THe region has nurtured modern housing in previous decades, and the weekend homes and artist studios of the 1960s and 1970s serve as early precursors to the project. Additonal sources of inspiration for the Sagaponac houses include Case Study Houses in California commissioned by Arts + Architecture magazine in the 1950s and the famed 1927 Weissenhof Siedlung experimental housing in Stuttgart, Germany.
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier is creative advisor to the initiative and is also designing one of the houses. Meier collaborated with Brown on architect selection, bringing together well-known figures like Michael Graves, Philip Johnson, and Richard Rogers with acclaimed younger practitioners, including Gisue and Mojgan Jariri, Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umenoto, Lindy Roy, and Deborah Berke.
The designs of all the Sagaponac Houses are illustrated in full-color and are accompanied by floor plans, architectural drawings, and computer renderings.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional architectural reference book.......2004-07-22
Everything in this book is conceptual in design. One would think that with progress in time and technology, people would opt for advanced method and cutting-edge design to be applied in their homes. On the contrary, the rich and the renowned are building themselves huge Georgian & Palladian homes at the Hamptons. Those homes have no relevance to its surroundings, no bearings to the lifestyle of occupants & that they don't capitalise upon the views. It's simply an avenue for the homeowners to flaunt their richness & their status. The book explains further that the Hamptons of present days is a far cry from the olden days when the liberal and the intellectuals come to congregate to engage in arts discussion. Sagaponac is within easy reach of the Hamptons and Coco Brown, both the author & the developer decided to do a development that is a breath of fresh air, a development that challenges the people to be non-conformist, a development that is going to polarise people's opinion. Whilst the book said that the houses here are to be liveable and affordable, it is rather a subjective point to define the word affordable. I have been reading about Sagaponac regularly and US$1.8 million to US$2.1 million for a house there is not relatively cheap for common people. There is also a contradiction about what we read in books and what we find out for ourselves in reality. One good example, I referred to Shigeru Ban, the architect from Japan. He worked with CoCo Brown on this project but upon consulting him about his willingness to work together for a speculative project, he commented that he doesn't work on speculative project at all. There's also talk about the reality that Sagaponac is within airport zone and that detracts a lot of buyers from this project especially when the developer is expecting people to part company with a substantial amount of their lifetime savings. However, what shines in this book is not the egos and the personas of the architects but the merits of their works. Some are over-the-top, some are user-friendly, some are environmentally-friendly, some are understated but useable, and the list goes on. There seem to be a home for every tastes imaginable. Richard Meier, Zaha Hadid, Richard Rogers, Dean Matiz, Michael Graves are some of the big names here. Overall, a very satisfying book to read and a book that I have come back to again & again for reference purpose. Highly recommended.
6 Houses under construction-one completed.......2004-01-28
I purchased this book over a month ago and I have picked it up every night since. Being an architect myself, I have found the designs of these homes intriguing, and more importantly, state of the art - Not only are they creative in style but, unlike many "modern" houses of this nature - they seem very much livable. You can visit the website www.housesatsagaponac.com for more information and for updates on the project's construction - with photos.
I praise this project - Coco Brown and his "in-house team" for fighting the odds (working with all these renowned architects and the building dept cannot be easy)and realizing it - I look forward to seeing it through. By far the most avante-garde architectural project happening today.
Nothing yet built.......2003-11-24
These houses are all still in the development stage, and what you get are presentatations that are reminiscent of the WTC proposals, showing the sorts of things possible with CAD programs these days. The book concentrates on these illustrations, and usually includes only a floor plan. For those with a couple million dollars to spend, it provides the lastest in cutting-edge design.

Book Description
The best architects are often defined by a singular residential commission-for example, Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright or the Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe. In Richard Meier's case, the Grotta House is the culmination of the styles and techniques that can be found in the best of his work. Designed and constructed in the second half of the 1980s, the house also exhibits the Grottas' exceptional collection of crafts and furniture. This book, which includes an extensive interview with the Grottas as well as detailed photography and text commenting on every facet of the residence, is essential reading for the modern architect or anyone who aspires to commission a house.

The Grotta House by Richard Meier
ASIN: 0847829944
Release Date: 2007-11-13 |
Book Description
One of today’s most influential and widely emulated architects, Richard Meier began his career by designing private homes in a modernist style. A decade ago, Rizzoli published Meier’s first fourteen masterful houses; this companion volume, with an in-depth essay on the early houses, picks up where the first volume left off and documents Meier’s most recent residential projects. Meier’s style has evolved over the years, becoming increasingly complex spatially and more structurally daring. Included here are not only single-family homes, such as beach houses in California and Florida, but also sleek apartment buildings, such as the three renowned towers on Perry and Charles Streets in Manhattan, and a luxurious getaway, the Playa Grande Resort and Artists’ Colony in the Dominican Republic. More than 250 color photographs, drawings, and plans give insight into these very significant additions to Meier’s international oeuvre.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for young origami lovers.......2007-09-02
This is a beautiful book. It is better for kids who have already done some folding because the instructions are a bit less straightforward than in other books. If you are starting an origami book collection, this is a must-have.
Amazing Little Book!.......2006-11-05
What first attracted me to this book, despite owning several origami books, was that this one has several patterns which make human forms... animals are so much more common, but my daughter wanted to make some little origami dolls, and humans are hard to find in beginner-level origami books.
Ah, this is SO MUCH MORE than just another beginner-level origami book! It is an alphabet book, and each page has a pattern for a figure whose English name begins with that letter. The figure's name is given in English, French and then Japanese, and at the bottom it is written in Japanese characters, too! Many children are enraptured with curiosity about other languages, codes, characters from other alphabets, and this book fuels that fire with succcint doses, one letter at a time. My daughter got so excited about the translations on each page that she immediately started memorizing those, even before she got around to trying out the origami!
And about the origami... as we have found, there are origami directions, and then there are... well, frustrating paths of deception that never lead you to the intended figure. And every parent knows how badly kids want to be able to do things like this without grownup help, which makes poor directions a real tragedy. Happily, these origami directions are really easy to work with. They are step-by-step, but simple. No labyrinthian trails of confusion to track here! No serpentine arrows leading you to valleys and mountains of terminology with optical-illusion illustrations. I've come across enough frustrating origami instructions to insist on checking an origami book out of the library and trying it out before I will buy one. After I checked this one out, renewed it, returned it, found it checked out to someone else and unavailable, I knew it was time to buy a copy!
26 letters in the alphabet, so that's how many patterns you get. 55 pages. Each odd-numbered page shows a letter with its translations and a lovely illustration which serves as the backdrop for a photo of the actual finished origami figure (it's brilliant and inspiring!). The facing (even-numbered) pages show the very clear folding instructions, none of which exceed one page.
So it isn't a long book, and it isn't cluttered. But it is a masterpiece of form and function, a litttle bit of language, a little bit of art, a little collection of nice origami projects (some quite unique), a most unusual ABC book (if you collect ABC books, you have to add this one to your collection!), and definitely one of those precious little books that you want to own, not just borrow!

From the supplier: The tremendous numbers of spectators at sports care racing events, including celebrities and media people, presents innumerable, enormous challenges in terms of security management. Security managers must thoroughly grasp the procedures of assessing the security requirements of an event and implement the appropriate measures to ensure the safety of large crowds, media people and popular celebrities. Planning security for such events must factor in a pre-advance survey, mission statement, on-site tour, plan formulation and personnel selection.

Book Description
The elderly population is growing and disabilities tend to increase with age. Professionals in the fields of human-computer interaction (HCI) are becoming increasingly aware of the needs of the elderly and people with disabilities. They also need to ensure that systems are designed for all, with specific consideration of these groups, not only computing systems but also other assistive and adaptive technologies such as information services and the use of smart cards, assistive robotics, systems for travellers, and home and environmental control systems. This book will help designers world-wide find relevant guidelines for the design of human-computer interaction and ensure that systems are designed for all, with specific consideration of people who are elderly and people with disabilities. Including reports from the International Federation of Information Processing's Working Group on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Disability. The book will be the first compendium of guidelines.

From the supplier: Cable modems can allow computer users access to other people's systems by simply clicking the "Network Neighborhood" icon on their Windows operating system. This is because most users of cable modems are provided with a 24-hour connection as well as a fixed IP (Internet protocol) address. More importantly, most modems are installed with "file-sharing" turned on. Users in an area share this network when the modems are linked to the Internet through cable networks.
