Book Description
This book describes the development of cost effective abatement strategies aimed at the control of air pollutant emissions in Europe, with a focus on ground level ozone. The author starts with the air pollution status quo in the late 1990s, discussing the impacts of photooxidant concentrations in the context of other air pollution related effects. Emission sources are then analysed in detail, deriving a scenario for a business-as-usual development of ozone precursor emissions. From a cost-benefit perspective, it is shown that only an integrated assessment of all air pollutants and their effects can achieve a full accounting that reflects synergies and hidden benefits. The modelling scheme identifies emission targets required to achieve compliance with EU thresholds, and calculations reveal the need to review established ozone thresholds and emission limits, in particular in view of the accession of Central and Eastern European nations and the resulting geographic extension.

Book Description
Many large urban areas have health and visibility problems due to ozone precursor emissions and low-level ozone concentrations, but have yet to find flexible and cost-effective regulatory measures to deal with these issues.
This book analyzes the performance of a pioneering cap-and-trade market recently established to reduce emissions in a more flexible and cost-effective manner than prescriptive or traditional regulation. The results should be of special interest to urban areas confronted by complex pollution problems requiring new regulatory and implementation approaches.

Book Description
Economic theory and empirical models suggest that economic instruments should help us to meet environmental goals at lower cost. Practical experience, however, shows that the cost savings of emission trading are smaller than expected and charges usually have had small incentive impacts. This book gives the first comprehensive review of economic theory, simulation models, and practical experience with the use of economic instruments. The book focuses on air pollution control. Part I examines theoretical aspects and simulation modeling in a national context. Part II surveys the practical experience in a variety of countries. Part III explores international issues, such as joint implementation. Because of its unique blend of theoretical and empirical research, the book will prove interesting for both economists and those interested in environmental policy.

Book Description
In these pages is all the information that you-manager, engineer, or other technical professional-would need to select, size, and estimate "budget/study" level capital and annual costs for a variety of air pollution control equipment. This equipment includes wet scrubbers, carbon adsorbers, and other "add-on" devices. This book also deals with such nonstack controls as wet dust suppression systems and flue gas desulfurization systems. The costs are current (1988 or 1989 dollars) and are mainly presented in equational form for ease of computerization and updating. Clear, comprehensive equipment sizing procedures are also detailed. Finally, several detailed example problems are included to illustrate the sizing and costing procedures. This book is not just for technical personnel, however. The material is easy to grasp and use. Anyone with an air pollution control background can follow and apply the procedures and data herein. Using this book, air pollution control professionals can now develop sound, defensible (within ±30%) cost estimates with a minimum of time and effort.

not worth three dollars.......2006-01-13
When you have a narrator reflect on being a nine year old and reference Gerard Manley Hopkins and say this about his uncle, "all that was left for him, he felt, was to make an ageing nuisance of himself at bingo or else wander the night streets in the hope of being granted permission to weep an old man's refret into the silicon breasts of a bewildered tanssexual prostitute," then you know you're in trouble.
This is one of those "hey, ain't I clever" slice-of-life pieces, the literary form of those annoying independent films about annoying people. It's a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. These are not people I ever knew and these are not insights that ring true. The garbled, meandering narrative is arrogant at best, but mostly banal. There are many other Aussie authors deserving of acclaim, like the brilliant Peter Carey. Perlman is a flash in the pan who will, in the near future, take his rightful place in the remainder bin of any good bookstore.
Give it a go!.......2003-07-09
Not a very popular book it seems, but is definitely funny. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a laugh, or just to get an interesting perspective of middle class life today. A good, easy read!

Cruelty to animals prevented and growing to love a flawed pet.......2006-05-02
This is a sweet tale about pets, cruelty to animals and how they can be loyal to humans in critical situations. Don is a boy who lives on a ranch and wants to get a horse. He has his eye on Ben Gold, a beautiful horse owned by a neighbor. The story opens with Don raking leaves and earning three dollars. Later, as he is going down the road, he sees a man beating a mule with a stick. He yells at him to stop it and the frustrated man offers Don the mule for his three dollars. A sudden handshake and Don owns a mule that he names Sinbad.
Sinbad is ornery, braying in the morning, kicking down things and pushing adults around. However, he is gentle to children and Don and his sister Jenny grow fond of him. Sinbad is put out into the distant wooded pasture and Don goes to visit him. On one visit, Don injures his leg and cannot walk. Sinbad comes to him and lies down beside him, keeping him warm and company throughout the night. In the morning, Don's father is led to him by Sinbad's braying. At the end, Don has both Ben Gold and Sinbad and they become pasture buddies.
Sometimes, the pets we are most attached to are those with flaws. This is the case here, Don rescues Sinbad and even though Sinbad is not what he wants, he learns to love him for what he is. That is a good lesson for children.
The Three Dollar Mule.......2000-05-26
My 20 yr old read this book years ago and loved it as much as my 7 yr old liked it today! This is exciting enough to keep a new reader interested with funny incidents and some exciting happenings. It is very difficult to find something for this stage of reader who is ready for something a lot more stimulating than rhyming picture books. This is particularly true for young boys who would rather be outside playing than reading. Bulla's story has a difficult mule named Sinbad, a 12-yr old boy with a broken leg, a thoroughbred horse, and some cows and chickens thrown in for lots of interest! In the end the Three Dollar Mule saves the day! The book could be read to a pre-reader, it could be read together (by switching off) with an early reader, or enjoyed by anyone up to the age of 12 when they can read alone. Approved by a homeschooling mom!

The Three Dollar Mule.......2000-05-26
My mom and I have been looking for good books to read. I had been reading the Polk Street School books by Patricia Reilly Giff and have finished them. Mom remembered Clyde Robert Bulla books and how much my older sisters enjoyed them when they were my age. I read THIS great book in one morning. It's about a boy who reluctantly buys an ornery mule for $3 after he sees a man beating him. Don, the 12 yr old boy, really wants a thoroughbred horse but his dad tells him he can't get the horse until he gets rid of Sinbad the mule. Don and his sister Jenny try to give the mule away he's so much trouble for the family, but no one in town wants the mule when they hear how much trouble Sinbad is. In the end Sinbad can stay. Read this exciting story to find out what happened to make Don's dad change his mind!

Sharp Objects: A Novel
ASIN: 1878448889 |
Book Description
Winner of The Age Book of the Year in Australia, Three Dollars is about Eddie, an honest, compassionate man who finds himself, at the age of thirty-eight, with a wife, a child, and three dollars. At any other time the world would have smiled on him. But this is the nineties and the world values other things. A brilliantly deft and poignant portrait of a man attempting to retain his humanity, his family, and his sense of humor in a corporate world.
Customer Reviews:
Umm...an ending?.......2006-02-09
I liked this book, right up to the time that they leave the hospital after the (first) medical emergency. Then the author seems to say "crikey, it'll take me several hundred more pages to wrap stuff up properly...let's just paste something together." And behold, you have an ending that renders everything that happened before irrelevant. Why bother tying up anything when you can leave virtually every character hanging? What was the whole bloody point of Amanda? Why bother bringing her father's commercial dealings into the plot at all? Plus, are we to believe that two professionals in their late 30's would have absolutely--and I mean absolutely--nothing saved, and would always and forever be one paycheck from homelessness?
I finished this book last night, and while I liked it at first, the more I think about it, the less I like it. I agree with the political points it's trying to make...but this is a very flawed first novel. I'll try another novel by this author, though.
Tell us something we don't know..........2004-07-02
This is the most irritating book I've read in a long time. Where other readers have obviously found it resonate with them, I found its concerns trivial and unremarkable.
Meanwhile, the prose is written in the longest, most circuitous sentences imaginable; it's like someone buried a bunch of cryptic crossword clues next to a nuclear waste dump, and the terrible mutated zombie-monster that resulted lurched into the printing presses at the Picador factory.
And finally, his clever-smug cultural quips are exclusive and obnoxiously snobbish. And as for quoting Joy Division to illustrate a relationship breakup? Puh-lease! It's like Judy Blume has decided to rewrite Rememberance of Things Past.
For me, it all comes down to one paragraph where he laments all the good things in his life that have vanished, including "Everything But The Girl before they had a drum machine". EVERYONE knows that EBTG were absolute rubbish before Todd Terry remixed "Missing"; only absolute GOOMPAHS were into their schmaltzy early stuff.
A nice find.......2001-09-22
I just picked this book up in a bookstore in London, on the shelf of "staff picks" (which more and more, I am finding, can be a great source of referral). It is a charming book- I don't think any of the reviews so far have liked it as much as I did. In particular, the main character Eddie brings much as much insight and depth as humour to his rambling thoughts on how things ended up the way they did. His great love for his depressed wife and singing daughter is one common theme throughout the book...and one feels like a genuine portrait is drawn, of a chemical engineer who adheres to high moral standards (therefore loses his job) and loves too much but cannot find ways to express it. Yes there are lots of cliches and devises, people popping up like bad dreams, but its a story, right?
Gimmicky in a good way!.......2000-01-15
Perlman's book is full of gimmicks that work! illuminating the effect that randomness has in our lives. In the raging bull market, it is easy to forget how much chance plays in our lives. "Three Dollars" strength reveals that even when making the "best" decisions we can we sometimes end up on the short end. His characters are of the type how could they be so stupid, but you can completely identify with them since they make the decisions that we so often do. A strong book that reminds you to be kind and to be grateful. I'm glad it got picked up by an American publisher, since I picked up my copy of the F&F British Edition in Taiwan.
A good idea but self conscious and lacking in subtlety.......1999-10-29
I sympathise with the theme of this novel and I really wanted to like it. The ugly face on neo liberalism should be exposed more often. Unfortunately, the exploration of the idea is studded with cliches and the writing is often too self consciously cute for comfort - Billy Bragg songs cover the same territory with far greater ease.

Very informative. Good tips. Something here for just about everyone. .......2006-03-05
The fact is, this book isn't perfect, but what real estate book is? Yes, some of the examples here are a bit oversimplified, but that that, to me, is a fairly minor flaw. I've found that you can learn a little something from just about every real estate book out there. In the end you have to take a little from all these different "gurus", and develop your own personal style depending on your personality and your comfort level with different real estate techniques.
This is a good book to keep in your real estate library. I recommend it.
Pathetic.......2000-06-06
I would rate this a negative if I could. This book is a scam with very little practical info, mainly just a sales job for his other junk. You will sink yourself very fast using his methods.
mirage.......2000-04-06
Mr. Hicks plays on the inexperience and the desperate. He focuses only on the successes and does not mention the possible pitfalls in real estate. I found the book somewhat informative, but was quite annoyed with his pitch to subscribe to his publication.
Check this out!.......1999-07-30
This book was first published in 1978!
I seriously doubt Mr. Hicks rewrote one word of this book for the 90's.
Gimme a break! Click on Mr. Hicks' name under the title. This will give you a list of other books written by him. Scroll down to his "Kits" Most of them about mail-order, real estate, etc. were published in 1987! Wow.
FLIM-FLAM........1999-06-30
Of the few dozen books I have read on the subject of real estate investing, this is perhaps the least desirable. This book rates high on incredible hype and low on any real substance. The author skips from one incredible deal to the next, showing how yes, you, your neighbor, or even the village idiot can make millions of dollars with virtually no risk, no expertise, and of course, no instruction on his part. As another reviewer stated, I always finish a book to search for those "pearls of wisdom" as well as to give an acurate review of the book as a whole. I found no pearls here.

Definitely original and worth a listen..........2007-09-07
This album may have followed suit in the post grunge craze of the mid 90's.. . but in retrospect its musical quality and overall originality make it essential to any grunge/metal/hard rock fan. Fred Durst may have ruined the image/ego of the band with his superfluous lyrics but that does not tamper with the quality of the sound. You can really hear the pain in his voice throughout the album. Wes Borland wrote some of the most high flying and complex riffs for this album... much more variety than almost anything you can pick up on the radio. It's a shame he left the band. John Otto... my goodness that man is made of rhythm. His jazzy beats along with DJ Lethal's samples really add a unique blend of rhythm to this album. Overall I believe despite the "fact" Limp Bizkit may have "sold out" (whatever that means, reference to Tool's 'Hooker with a Penis') this album is worth picking up. If you have any appreciation for the Nu-metal/Nu-rock genre you are going to have to check this out.
Limp debut showed some promise.....didn't deliver on it in the long run........2007-05-14
This is LB's heaviest album, and many people who like their work from Significant Other onwards may only like a couple of songs on here, because they tend to be more raw-sounding and in-your-face. Of course, everyone bought this because of "Faith", more than likely. I think the first half of this album was good and I like this heavy side of LB, but then they figured out how to sell records and in turn, sold out. LB was considered cool when I was finishing high school and entering college, but now they are kind of looked on with contempt. I think they had their place in music history, albeit not a big one, and they aren't meant to be taken too seriously. They were fun, but their career has run it's course. They peaked in 1999-2000, and it has been a long fall ever since. Still, on occasion, I bring out the old LB albums for some mindless fun at parties. And that's about it.
This is great!!.......2007-03-04
This CD is great!!! Lots of good tracks, and a really fun album!! This is not their best, although it is amazingly cool!! I recommend any of Limp Bizkit's CD's!! My personal favorites are Counterfeit, Sour, and Faith. But there all great, so buy this!! Oh and to the person said that thrash metal is better the Nu-metal, here is a big "F you"!! Your wrong and thrash metal is not very good at all, so get a life!!!
It was ok for its time but that was a DECADE AGO!.......2006-08-16
Oh man, this sucks really bad. Good thing nu-metal is dead. THRASH METAL IS REAL METAL, this is for posers.
Fred Durst should have never been born..................................2006-07-20
Limp Bizkit are the perfect testimony as to why the music industry is going downhill. If any A&R person signed this band - even ten years ago, they would have been shot. Fred Durst is a f***ed up psycopath that should have his head squashed by a steam roller and after that- they should flush peices of his brain down the toilet. His body should be thrown in an unmarked grave - with no memory of him whatsoever. And the fact that guitar player Wes Borland got in the magazine "Guitar legends" is a sick joke. He can't even play guitar - let alone churn out any decent riffs. The whole music industry owes the world an apology for for making Fred Durst famous - because now were stuck with him. This band is no more than a warning to kids that if you suck, you pay for it.

Fun look at a long lost part of Florida.......2007-06-27
Light and breezy, this book which was written in the 1950's captures much of the atmosphere of post WW II Florida. The message of concern over the loss of history and a sense of place comes through but with a sense of humor. The overall tone reminds me somewhat of John Cheever and John D. Macdonald with whisky drinking, broads and male bonding.
Hard to Believe.......2000-04-14
It's hard to believe that this book was written so longago. The language and characterizations are as fresh as tomorrow'snewspaper. I was introduced to this book by the author's son...a fishing guide in the Bahamas. It's a quick, but satisfying read. Keasler writes with the same understanding of the human comedy exhibited by Jimmy Buffet: If you enjoy changes in lattitudes and attitudes, you'll have a couple of quite enjoyable afternoons on the beach with Keasler's characters.
KEASLER GOT IT ALL!.......1999-09-10
I am so pleased that this book is once again available! I have an autographed original edition, complete with dust jacket. John was the latter day, deadpan Mark Twain of Florida, sort of like one of those claw machines full of whistles, yo-yos and ping-pong balls in a penny arcade. You never knew what he'd come up with next. John really got into the spirit of it all. I wish that a collection of his hilarious newspaper columns were available! A funny read!

A Great Debut!.......2003-08-13
For any of you familiar with David Lipsky's novel "The Art Fair," "Three Thousand Dollars" will feel like a walk down memory lane. Several of the stories, such as the title story and "Shh," deal with a young man coming of age and his relationship with his mother, an artist, and are told from the young man's point of view. The final story, "Springs, 1977," is told from the mother's point of view, as she balances her maternal love for her children with her needs as a sexually (in)active woman. Sometimes the decisions the main characters in these stories are forced to make are rendered in a whisper, as in "Three Thousand Dollars," in which the young narrator tacitly reveals to his mother (who he has been lying to the whole time) that he spent the money his father had given him to pay for college; others with more trepidition, like my favorite story, "Relativity," in which our young college junior hero, Ross, must face the seemingly Machiavellian machinations of a fellow student on his hallway. Regardless of their presentation, each story suggests a bigger picture, like the ideas of moral relativism cleverly brought to life in "Relativity," or facing the possible scorn of a parent and the endless labors of a guilty conscience for leaving one parent to go live with another, as in "Answers."
There is a boldness to the characterizations of these young men: they make decisions that are sometimes cowardly, they avoid confrontation until the last possible moment, and they make no apologies for their feelings of inadequacy or for the bad decisions they sometimes make. In other words, they are every man at that age of unreason, teetering between leaving behind the no-consequences superficial world of childhood and the adult world of responsibilty and deeper emotions.
I recently reread this collection after having read it when it was first published fourteen years ago. My perceptions have changed in that period: when I was a man in my early twenties, I read "Relativity" and sided completely with Ross, the main character who was being "bullied" throughout the school year by the somehat psycopathic Tom. However, as I reread the story "Relativity," I found myself siding with Ross on one page, then shifting my allegiance to Tom, the putative bully, as I succumbed to the moral relativism inherent in the storytelling.
"Three Thousand Dollars" is a great debut, and a great introducion to Lipsky's fiction. I encourage those who pick up this collection to follow it up with "The Art Fair," as they feel like companion pieces. David Lipsky has a current success with his inciteful and entertaining nonfiction book, "Absolutely American," about his four years at West Point as an observer.
