        Book Description

Space age lunar and planetary missions offer a new and enlarged perspective on volcanism, extending our experience to features discovered beyond this planet. Starting with Earth, Volcanoes of the Solar System takes the reader on a guided tour of the terrestrial planets and moons and their volcanic features. Lunar lava fields are seen through the eyes of the Apollo astronauts, and we are taken on an imaginary hike up the Martian slopes of Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano of the Solar System. This comprehensive and lucid account of volcanoes includes over 150 photographs. The text describes the most recent data on the unique and varied volcanic features of Venus and updates our knowledge on the prodigiously active volcanoes of Io. This book is accessible to the general reader, yet includes enough detail to serve as an introduction for earth sciences students.

4 out of 5 stars A good introductory review of extraterrestrial volcanism.......2004-01-26

Mention the word "volcano", and most people think only of the Earth. However, as this fine book shows, such is hardly the case. Indeed, the phenomenon of volcanic activity is widespread in our own solar system.

The text is introductory in nature, and the book is unconfounded by spates of hypertechnical language. Anyone with an average scientific backgound will easily understand the great bulk of the matters discussed. Excellent photography, both from telescopes, as well as manned and robotic space vehicles, closely follows the text and contributes to its comprehension.

I believe the author occasionally leaves technical terms unexplained, however. Also, the photography is largely in black and white.

The book begins with chapters on Earth's own volcanism, and then proceeds to other planets and moon, including our moon, Venus, Mars, Io, and Triton. I found the chapters on Venus especially fascinating, given the wide variety of igneous features.

Any reader will come away with a well enhanced understanding of both our solar system and the part that vulcanism plays in its ongoing development. Recommended highly, especially for student of and devotees of planetary astronomy and volcanic processes.

4 out of 5 stars An overview on volcanic forces in our solar system.......1998-04-06

This book offers an introduction into the dynamic forces forming the surface of the planets. It is easy to read and offers a lot of information. I would recommend it to everyone who is interested in planetary geology.

4 out of 5 stars A study of the geology and geologic forces of volcanoes.......1997-03-29

This text discusses the geology of volcanoes throughout most of our solar system (it lacks a chapter on Mercury). In it the author begins with an examination of earth's volcanic landforms and then progresses to examine those on other planetary worlds. The level of writing is non-technical, and clearly for the beginner. However, on occasion I noted that the author did not define various terms which make parts of this text a bit more difficult for the novice to follow. Still, the text is quite readable and offers a good overview. This is especially true in the design of the book's chapters: there is an initial one on each of the major planets which is 'more introductory', which is then followed by a second chapter which is 'more advanced'. I will note that the photography is quite nice, and that the book covers some of the more exotic volcanoes (such as those on Io and Triton). This is a good text for those interested in an overview of one of the most facsinating landforms in our solar system

Written by active research scientists who study the volcanism of Earth and of other planets, the contributions provide the first general review of volcanic activity throughout the Solar System. Successive chapters describe past and present volcanic activity as it is observed throughout the Solar System. These chapters relate to readers not only our present knowledge of volcanism throughout the Solar System but also how frontline scientists working in this field conduct their research.

5 out of 5 stars Blowin' Up Around the Solar System.......2006-01-14

Despite being presented for the community of professional astronomers, this book is fascinating and essential for anyone interested in geologic phenomena around our solar system. Thanks to recent discoveries by the various spacecrafts that have been sent to the furthest reaches of the solar system, plus steadily improving earthbound observations, we can see that volcanoes are very common on other worlds and also offer a great amount of variety in their structures and behaviors. This book is composed of chapters written by various planetary geologists, starting out with volcanoes right here on Earth, in order to establish basic knowledge on volcanic processes. We then learn about the volcanoes of Venus and Mars, plus several of the solid moons of the giant outer planets. Most interesting are two of Jupiter's moons, the hot-headed sulfur-spitting Io, and the watery and possibly life-supporting Europa. For the interested layperson, note that there are some readability issues with this book. It was written by scientists for scientists, so the prose is not exactly compelling, and a glossary (or at least better explanations of the many obscure scientific terms and jargon) sure would be helpful. Meanwhile, there is a vague feminist slant to this book because all of the chapters were submitted by women scientists, but fortunately this only applies to some of the introductions, and in any case this concept can be dismissed as inconsequential. That's because anyone is capable of teaching us about these fascinating aspects of nearby worlds. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars A superb book about the volcanoes of our solar system.......2005-03-16

        Can ladies do science?

        Of course.

As Sally Ride says in the Foreword, this is the first edited book on planetary geology written solely by women. Let's hear it for Rosaly Lopes, Tracy Gregg, Katherine Cashman, Ellen Stofan, Lisa Gaddis, Susan Sakimoto, Joy Crisp, Louise Prockter, Mary Chapman, Gudrun Larsen, and Susan Kieffer! These ladies were the logical authorities to be chosen to write their respective chapters. And they did a great job.

Cashman leads off with a discussion of hot spot volcanism and subduction zone volcanism. The part on hot spots deals mostly with volcanoes in Hawaii, but the Laki volcano in Iceland is chosen as the most dramatic example of "the deleterious effects of volcanic gases." The section on subduction zone volcanism includes topics such as silicic lava flows and lava domes as well as caldera collapse. And there's plenty about the hazards associated with such volcanism, including a speculation that the eruption of Toba, Sumatra (74,000 years ago) may have reduced the human population to less than 100,000 back then.

Gregg talks about the exploration of volcanoes hidden at the sea floor on mid-ocean ridges. This includes some discussion of hydrothermal venting there, which can raise the ocean water temperature near a vent to over 400 degrees Celsius. And, of course, it is mentioned that there is speculation about similar volcanism (and even life) on the Jovian moon Europa.

What about "Earth's evil twin," as Stofan appropriately calls Venus? Thousands of volcanoes have been identified on Venus. We learn about lava flows there as well as long sinuous channels. Some of the lava flows there are much longer than were predicted. Hopefully, we'll learn from them how to better predict how far lava flows will travel on our own planet!

Gaddis tells us about lunar volcanoes. She shows a picture of a sinuous rille on the Moon. A few decades ago, some people speculated that such rilles were produced by water, but Gaddis explains that they are now known to have been carved by lava. And she says that volcanoes on the Moon range from about 4.3 billion years old (since the formation of the lunar crust) to 3 billion years old. There hasn't been any volcanic activity on the moon in the past billion years or so.

Sakamoto and Crisp then have sections on Martian volcanoes. Besides an overview, we get a detailed discussion of what Mars Pathfinder discovered from the Martian surface.

Lopes (who is almost literally the girl from Ipanema) has a fascinating section on the Io volcanoes observed by the Voyager and Galileo missions. She is now working on the Cassini Mission, where she is getting a chance to investigate calderas and cryovolcanism on Titan. I think we'll need a new edition to tell us about this!

Procter's section is on ice volcanism. She shows us evidence of cryoclastic eruptions on Europa and on other moons of major planets. The most interesting part is the discussion of the "cantaloupe terrain" of Triton.

Well, what do volcanoes produce? Um, ash! And Chapman and Larsen tell us plenty about it. Larsen is an expert in tephrachronology, and she knows all about the varied ages and types of ash deposits in Iceland. This detailed knowledge is used by the authors to draw conclusions about volcanic deposits on Mars (Chapman's specialty).

The book concludes with a chapter by Kieffer. She begins with the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park. She contrasts these geyser eruptions with volcanic plumes on Mars, Io, and Mount Saint Helens. And from here, she makes analogies with volcanism on Triton and Titan.

Volcanoes are very interesting. But one can see that it takes hard work and talent to do work in this field. In my opinion, there is one other requirement, namely courage. Volcanoes are dangerous! In any case, let me express my sincere admiration for all the authors in producing this fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Volcanoe Book.......2005-01-08

This is a great book for everyone interested in volcanoes. It is very readable and talks not only about the science but also how the researchers do the science - with some very charming stories. It is really amazing that all chapters are written by female experts. We hear a lot about the lack of women scientists but there seems to be no lack of women studying volcanoes! A great book to give as a gift to a high school or college age daughter or niece.

        Book Description

Research into the geological processes operating on Mars relies on interpretation of images and other data returned by unmanned orbiters, probes and landers. Such interpretations are based on our knowledge of processes occurring on Earth Terrestrial analog studies therefore play an important role in understanding the geological features observed on Mars. This is the first book to present direct comparisons between locales on Earth and Mars, and contains contributions from leading planetary geologists to demonstrate the parallels and differences between these two neighboring planets. Mars is characterized by a wide range of geological phenomena that also occur on Earth, including tectonic, volcanic, impact cratering, eolian, fluvial, glacial and possibly lacustrine and marine processes. The book provides terrestrial analogs for newly acquired data sets from Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Odyssey, Mars Exploration Rovers and Mars Express, and will therefore be a key reference for students and researchers of planetary science.

4 out of 5 stars explicit comparisons of many features.......2007-09-20

Mars research has progressed to the point where it has proved useful to compare geological formation processes of Earth to what has been seen or deduced on Mars. Numerous interesting features seen on Mars include possible flood lava flows and volcanic structures.

Earth locations studied include cap rocks on Iceland, sand dunes in Arizona and Nevada, and Siberian river beds. Data maps from Mars form a compelling visual feature of the book. Taken from all the successful Mars missions that have carried cameras. There are many comparisons between the Mars maps and satellite photos of Earth locations. In no small part, to make explicitly clear the correspondences between various geological features on the 2 planets.

In general, there is ample evidence for previous fluid flows on the Martian surface. Some of this may well have been liquid water. Producing spectacular flood channels and plains, rivalling or exceeding any on Earth.

This book is a MUST for anyone who is taking the AP Physics, or have ambition for the physics Olympiad or contest at the beginning undergraduate level. It has almost all the typical problems that your intructor would put in your final exam's CHALLENGING PROBLEM OR BONUS PROBLEM Section. If you work through all the problems, you will have no problem achieving A's in your classe. Best problem book for undergraduate students!!
The other ones I would recommend is
              1) Thinking Like a Physicist by N. Thompson;
              2) International Physics Olympiad has all the challenging problems at elementary level that you will find great joy in working on them. It helps to make you a smarter physics student!!

Edgy and funny at the same time, Thin Skin provides a realistic glimpse into the dark and inviting world of fame from the writer who penned Namedropper when she was just twenty-one.

Everyone thinks Ruby is beautiful except for Ruby, who is so hell-bent on being ugly that she's driven away the man who loves her, the agent who swears he could have made her a star, and the delectable male costar of her latest project, Mean People Suck. After all, Ruby believes that what's going on outside should reflect what's on the inside -- and inside she's a mess. Burned-out at the age of twenty, she's living alone in a world of hotels and fast food -- none of which she keeps down -- haunted by the memory of her childhood love, cutting herself, and tempted to repeat her mother's tragic fate. She needs to find a new way of being....and fast.

Deeply provacative and powerful twist on a realm of a destructive force of a girl. Even though the character may have seemed difficult to relate to on a practical level, it's a glimpse into a human's own self destructive nature. It's reality in the rawest sense making it difficult to grasp. But the powerful dagger of force behind Ruby is disturbing as well as intensely real as her soul imitates the lack of purity and innocence in the human soul.

This book is truly horrible. I can't quite believe such vapid ramblings have an audience... There's a reason why there are 60 read copies for sale! This book is one of the few - very, very few - I have ever thrown in the trash, my guilt at wasting "literature" aleviated by the sure knowledge that I don't know a single person who would enjoy it. It has a lack of plot, structure or charm. The characters are vile and one-dimentional. it's horribly written and an utter waste of time. If I were her publisher I'd suggest she should re-market her work as "rommantic fiction" and churn out one of these once a month. She certainly seems more interested in waxing lyrical about her heroine's beauty than she is about writing a decent novel. It's supermarket quality. I don't doubt that's her future.

3 out of 5 stars Whine, Whine, Whine.......2005-07-19

Emma Forrest is very talented. She has a wonderful imagination and an intelligent writing style, but why she creates these worthless characters I don't know. Ruby is only slightly less annoying than Viva, the heroine in "Namedropper", Forrest's first novel. Ruby is a beautiful, edgy, semi-famous movie star. But she sees nothing of what she has going for herself. The entire story has her pining away for Liev, a friend of her father's she had an "affair" with at the age of 12. Ruby is always whining for what she's missing or what she thinks she's missing. Why do we want to read about that? It's so tired: A beautiful movie star who's so insecure with herself that she becomes self-destructive. In the end Ruby attempts suicide. Does she learn anything? It's difficult to tell from the book. Maybe the book should have ended with Ruby waiting by the velvet rope in heaven asking Saint Peter if he thinks she's beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Dark is as dark does.......2005-05-16

Emma Forrest debuted on the literary scene with the wry, wise, witty "Namedropper," with its delicious meditations on life in general. But she veered off to the dark side in "Thin Skin." This novel is as sharp and dark as a bloody knife, with its unflinching look at the beautiful people who only see a skeleton behind their faces.

Ruby is a beautiful young actress, with fair success and an intensity that attracts men -- as dark and rich as the jewel. But she's miserable. She wanders through an empty life, meditating on her first love, her bulimia, and the way she cuts herself. At twenty, she is burned out, and determined to have her outside reflect her inner rot, and to be alone.

Then she bumps into Rachel, the soon-to-be-ex-wife of Ruby's ex-lover. Rachel takes unexpected pity on Ruby, finding a confused child inside the jaded starlet. She tries to help Ruby, and a strange friendship pops up between them. But not even friends, roommates and lovers can keep Ruby from attempting suicide.

A person who is self-destructing is a terrible sight. So horrifying, in fact, that most people prefer to shut their eyes to the reality; especially if the person seems to "have it all" -- beauty, youth and talent. Most people assume that there is nothing to be unhappy about. But Emma Forrest keeps her eyes wide open to the horrors of Ruby's inner life. It's a harrowing read, but it would be worthless as literature if Forrest didn't explore up to the brink.

Perhaps the most unnervingly good thing about "Thin Skin" is that Forrest captures the manic wildness that comes to a person who is about to go over the edge. For example, when Rachael tells Ruby that she's "all wrong," Ruby delightedly responds "I know!" Sure, the narrative rambles. Sure, Ruby is self-absorbed. But sadly, that is the portrait of a person who is slowly imploding -- they do ramble in their own heads, and their universe is taken up by their problems.

The storyline reflects Ruby's meandering life, as she wanders from one place to another, without caring. Forrest perfectly captures the smell, sight and feel of dark bars, L.A. boutiques and sterile hospitals. But there is also a dark poetry to her writing. Early on, she describes how "me and the thought of suicide walked home, arm in arm, laughing at the wind like young lovers." Much like the book itself, it's both beautiful and disturbing.

"Thin Skin" is a very disturbing read. In a good way. It offers a window into the mind of a deeply unhappy young woman, without an ounce of soft-pedalling or a sugary ending. Astounding.

1 out of 5 stars Trees should not be killed for this book........2005-04-07

This is one of the worst books I have ever bought. I couldn't read the whole book. I can't believe all the positive reviews on the back of the book. I care nothing about the characters. The author shows no talent for writing. This book is a huge waste of time, money and trees! I really give this book a 0 not a 1.

                Book Description

Like some benign infestation, bubbles (and related forms) seem to be springing up everywhere lately in contemporary art. Thin Skin brings together some of the most interesting contemporary work involving malleable, inflatable materials, including pieces by James Lee Byars, Charles and Ray Eames, Olafur Eliasson, Tom Friedman, Piero Manzoni, Ernesto Neto, Pipilotti Rist, Miri Segal, and Andy Warhol. Thin Skin identifies their current popularity as a function of two contemporary conditions: a new awareness of 'in-between' spaces, spaces neither real nor completely virtual, situations neither entirely in our control nor totally beyond it; and a new understanding of our own bodies as permeable sensors in constant osmotic exchange as they move through these spaces. An original and thought-provoking accumulation of inflatables, Thin Skin proves that thinness and transparency are indeed the symbolic, and maybe even the real, skin that encase contemporary spaces and bodies.

I hate to even classify _Thin Skins_ as a mystery book. It's more a comedy with a surprise ending than anything else.

It's very funny and I highly recommend it.

                  Book Description

One mouth, one elbow, one row of eyelashes--Ann Mandelbaum's intense examinations of a single human feature at a time are best known in photographic form, but here readers see her sculpture and video, too. The prints, casts and stills show one of the most convincing, authentic positions in contemporary surrealism, an artist exploring the experiences of her own body, its fantastic reality and her psychophysical fate. Thin Skin is Mandelbaum's third book, and it relates and compares casts of body parts made in recent years, fragments of reality reinterpreted in her photographs and the microorganisms she has invented and collected in display cases. "Lips stick, then part/Spit glows, then pops/Motion tells, dispels. Resells/What and where appear and smear " --Ann Mandelbaum

                        Book Description

Your Skin Is Thin But It Keeps You In is a children's book focused on protecting your skin and knowing how to have healthy skin. The book is written in a fun and simplistic rhyme with kid-friendly illustrations for the 2 to 10 year old age range.

The book generally describes skin conditions and encourages children to wear sunscreen and protect their skin. Skin problems such as ecszema, warts and sun damage cause social problems for children and this book helps explain them in a fun, acceptable way. Parents are encouraged to use the book to educate children about their skin.
