Book Description
Dynamic Soil-structure interaction is one of the major topics in earthquake engineering and soil dynamics since it is closely related to the safety evaluation of many important engineering projects, such as nuclear power plants, to resist earthquakes. In dealing with the analysis of dynamic soil-structure interactions, one of the most difficult tasks is the modeling of unbounded media. To solve this problem, many numerical methods and techniques have been developed.
This book summarizes the most recent developments and applications in the field of dynamic soil-structure interaction, both in China and Switzerland.
An excellent book for scientists and engineers in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and earthquake engineering.

Book Description
For the last couple of decades it has been recognized that the foundation material on which a structure is constructed may interact dynamically with the structure during its response to dynamic excitation to the extent that the stresses and deflections in the system are modified from the values that would have been developed if it had been on a rigid foundation. This phenomenon is examined in detail in the book. The basic solutions are examined in time and frequency domains and finite element and boundary element solutions compared. Experimental investigations aimed at correlation and verification with theory are described in detail. A wide variety of SSI problems may be formulated and solved approximately using simplified models in lieu of rigorous procedures; the book gives a good overview of these methods. A feature which often lacks in other texts on the subject is the way in which dynamic behavior of soil can be modeled. Two contributors have addressed this problem from the computational and physical characterization viewpoints.
The book illustrates practical areas with the analysis of tunnel linings and stiffness and damping of pile groups. Finally, design code provisions and derivation of design input motions complete this thorough overview of SSI in conventional engineering practice.
Taken in its entirety the book, authored by fifteen well known experts, gives an in-depth review of soil-structure interaction across a broad spectrum of aspects usually not covered in a single volume. It should be a readily useable reference for the research worker as well as the advance level practitioner.
(abstract)
This book treats the dynamic soil-structure interaction phenomenon across a broad spectrum of aspects ranging from basic theory, simplified and rigorous solution techniques and their comparisons as well as successes in predicting experimentally recorded measurements. Dynamic soil behavior and practical problems are given thorough coverage. It is intended to serve both as a readily understandable reference work for the researcher and the advanced-level practitioner.

Book Description
Joy in the Morning finds Bertie Wooster trapped in the countryside with his bossy ex-fiancé and her fire-breathing father, frightful brother, and beefy new betrothed. Uproar ensues until Jeeves arrives to save the day.
Customer Reviews:
Classic Jeeves and Wooster.......2006-09-03
Picture a story involving a snarl of relatives and lovers tangled in a web of misunderstandings. If tragedy ensues, you have your standard soap opera. If, on the other end, the results are more comic, you have a P.G. Wodehouse novel. I can't really judge soaps, but it's probably safe to say that they range from good to bad. With Wodehouse, however, the quality is almost always dead-on-great, and never more so than with his Jeeves and Wooster stories, as Joy in the Morning once again demonstrates.
As the novel opens, Bertie Wooster has just emerged from being in the soup once again. What this soup was and how he escaped it is the story that follows. In this case, Bertie is coerced into going to one of his least favorite places, Steeple Bumpleigh, home to his dread Aunt Agatha. (Is there a more terrifying figure in comic fiction than Agatha?) Her husband, Bertie's Uncle Percival, needs Bertie to participate in a ruse that will help cinch a business deal. It is not a job that Bertie relishes, and the only the assurance of Aunt Agatha's absence allows him to screw up the courage to make the trip.
Of course, there are complications. For one thing, Percival's ward Nobby has fallen for Boko Fittleworth, and while the love is mutual, Percival - whose consent is needed for their marriage - has nothing but loathing for Boko. A scheme is needed to win over Percival, and Bertie will be recruited to play a part. Also at Steeple Bumpleigh is Florence Craye, an ex-fiancee of Bertie's who is now engaged to the easily jealous policeman, Stilton Cartwright. An argument and a misunderstanding will find her re-betrothed to Bertie and him a target of Stilton's wrath.
Bertie is a well-meaning but not-so-bright fellow who tends to get into trouble through accident and the manipulation of others. Left alone, life would be easy, but there are too many who force Bertie's involvement. Fortunately, there is his valet, Jeeves, who is able to solve nearly any problem.
The joy of reading a Jeeves and Wooster novel is Bertie's delightful narration with its unique enhancements to the English language. This is a book that is pure fun with no great insights or deep characters. It may be fluff, but it is five-star fluff and a great diversion.
Wodehouse at his best.......2006-07-10
This is a great, funny book. It may be my favorite Jeeves & Wooster story.
Not his best work.......2005-07-19
It's a given that Wodehouse's plots are completely outlandish or, in the words of another reviewer, like musical comedies. And yet somehow I have found a certain plausibility or coherence within the outlandishness of other of his books, such that I was more than willing to suspend my disbelief. In this case, I felt that the plot devices were weaker than usual, however, and in fact it took me a while to get through this one as a result.
The basic plot elements have been summarized elsewhere, but I will give one example of what I mean, to wit: Bertie's uncle by marriage, Uncle Percy, stands opposed to the marriage of his ward, Nobby, to one Boko Fittleworth. The plan to get Uncle to change his mind involves Bertie verbally assaulting him, to the point where the uncle must be "rescued" by Boko, who just happens to be in the vicinity (outside the uncle's study, for example). Uncle P. will then realize what an upstanding chap our Boko is.
Even within Bertie's cocooned world, this is weak, nor is it the lone instance of evidence that Wodehouse was not at his peak with this one. Still, he does charm readers as usual with Bertie's commentaries, a brilliant mix of goofy slang and highbrow poetic references, often in the same sentence. For better stories, I would recommend "Leave It To PSmith" (5 stars) or "Pigs Have Wings" (4 stars).
Beyond brilliant .......2004-10-30
P.G. Wodehouse could write a phonebook and make it brilliant. But this story is so incredibly good that words fail me. He weaves farce upon satire upon mystery upon suspense upon hilarious premise and delightful payoff until the reader is dizzy with laughter and awe. The usual suspects are here: Bertie Wooster and his butler, Jeeves, plus frightening debutants, pompous authority figures, shrill relatives, troublesome children, and yet another pleasant English country village...pleasant, that is, until Bertie & Co. come along. Wodehouse was the absolute master of the English language, of humor, and plot construction. This book is as good an example of his mastery as there is. My only regret is that the reading experience passes by too quickly.
The Master at his Best.......2003-04-26
I would not willingly try to judge which is Wodehouse's best book, for it is a hard task, as each of the Master's works shine in thier own special way. But if i had to, and there was no other way, then it would have to be Joy in the Morning.
This is a classic story of Bertie Wooster and Jeeves, his valet, or as Jeeves puts it "his gentleman's gentleman". There are several books featuring Bertie and Jeeves and like all the others this one is a cracker.
Bertie has to go to Steeple Bumpleigh, the lair of his horrendouns Aunt Agatha, to assist his uncle pull of a tricky business deal. Confusion ensues when he gets engaged to the wrong girl - the overbearing, always-moulding Florence Craye. The situation is especially hard for him, as also in the cast of characted is Stilton Cheesewright, who thinks Bertie as a snake and butterfly, and wants to clobber him.
Add to this a business magnate from Long Island, an eccentric author, and a boy scout bent (pun intended, read the book and you shall find out) on helping all around him, and its a recipie for the worst kind of disaster for Bertie. Thank god he has Jeeves on hand to extricate him from all the doodah.
A superb read. Dont give this one a miss. Remember, a man who is tired of Wodehouse, is a man who is tired of Life.
Book Description
Jeeves in the Morning reflects the glories and absurdities of a vanished era as Jeeves and his master, Bertie Wooster, frolic through a series of outrageous and nightmarish doings.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff........2006-09-13
One of the better Jeeves and Wooster novels, and that's saying something. Packed full of boyscouts, fiancés, and Cheesewrights. This book just plain fun and is not to be missed, pick up your copy today. Now. And get another for the road. Wodehouse is the best English humorist that you'll never hear of in Brit Lit.
Wodehouse in Fine Fettle.......2006-08-04
Reading some reviews I wonder if these readers read the same book I did. Wodehouse would seem the last author to psychoanalyze, and his books would seem the last to over-analyze, being almost the only antidote left to the over-everything of the modern (or is it post-modern world?). By the way, there is no "capital punishment" in this book, which refers to the death penalty. There is "corporal punishment" common in the Britain of Wodehouse's day and referred to often in his books as "six of the juciest" and by other sobriquets.
Anyone who's read a lot of PGW has already read this one, one of the topping best. But if you've perused one another Jeeves book, you may still think you've read this one due to the Wooster habit of referring to and reminiscing about his previous adventures.
Also, fans of the excellent Jeeves and Wooster (or is it Wooster and Jeeves?) TV series will find all sorts of bits from this book, some of them surviving intact. While I very much like the Penguin new reissue paperbacks, this edition and a few other American paperbacks feature art by Steven Guarnaccia. They are slightly larger than the pocket paperbacks, fall open nicely in the hand, and have slightly tan pages which minimize the glare when reading outside.
I think the reviewer is correct who said this is the same book as Joy in the Morning, itself a clever play on the Psalmist's "Joy cometh in the morning". The alternate editions are listed in two books (neither of which I have handy right now), Joseph Connolly's P.G. Wodehouse (Thames and Hudson Literary Lives), out of print and rather difficult to get but well worth it; and Richard Usborne's Plum Sauce (I may have misspelled both author's names). These books have helped me avoid ordering the same book under different titles, and also enable those so desiring to read PGW's output in chronological order.
Not A Negative Word.......2006-03-12
Superlative, sterling, superior, tops, great, bang-up, bully, capital, outstanding, dandy, corking, distinguished, extraordinary, keen, nifty, humorous, peachy, whimsical, smashing, slap-up, swell, comical, amusing, mirthful, rummy, singular, funny, acute, sharp, perceptive, piercing, farcical, droll, risible, hilarious, mirthful, witty, sidesplitting, uproarious, waggish, wry, jocose, zany, rosy, upbeat, and perfectly plotted, to say the least.
Waiting.......2005-08-08
I'm sure that I've read this one before (or the alternate Joy in the Morning) but don't seem to have a copy. So I've ordered one.
Sure do wish all booksellers would put the alternate titles so that unsuspecting buyers don't buy duplicates.
Oh and I thoroughly enjoy all the Bertie & Jeeves books. Check out his Psmith ones too!
One of the Best by the Master of Farce.......2005-05-12
This wonderfully humorous novel, published as Joy in the Morning in Britain, is perhaps the best of the Bertie and Jeeves novels, and I can think of no higher praise than that for any book.
All the elements for a successful Bertie and Jeeves novel are here: love affairs go off the rails, imperiling Bertie's status as a bachelor; Bertie's actions to right things fail; and Jeeves comes to the rescue. In addition, there are some special features: Bertie's Uncle Percival, Lord Worplesdon, the second husband of Bertie's Aunt Agatha (the one who, as I recall, "chews ground glass and conducts human sacrifices at the full moon") makes his only appearance in the Wodehouse oeuvre, as I believe is also the case for Boko Fittleworth, whose actions go awry just as often as Bertie's.
It's all held together, of course, by Bertie's extraordinary narration.
I have read this book perhaps a dozen times, and I still laugh aloud at least once on nearly every page.
