Book Description

In an important new contribution to the literature of chaos, two distinguished researchers in the field of physiology probe central theoretical questions about physiological rhythms. Topics discussed include: How are rhythms generated? How do they start and stop? What are the effects of perturbation of the rhythms? How are oscillations organized in space? One of the most interesting features of the book is that it makes a start at explaining "dynamical diseases" that are not the result of infection by pathogens but that stem from abnormalities in the timing of essential functions.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to chaos theory in Biology.......2005-07-17

This book is a good introduction for those who would like to learn more about how the rythms of the different processes in our organism work. It requires a good knowledge of mathematics (calculus) but has many examples described in pure text.

The analysis focuses mainly in the systemic cycles (heart beat, breathing, etc.) but the same theory can be used to gene regulation and enzime activities.

At the end of the book there's an appendix with some basic notions of the math used through out the book but it'll be useful only for those who have some knowledge of calculus.

          Book Description

This volume delineates the use of fractal patterns and measures of fractal dimensions in describing and understanding general aspects of biology, particularly human physiology. After describing the ubiquitous nature of fractal phenomena, the authors give examples of the properties of fractals in space and time. Proceeding from mathematical definitions, they develop detailed practical methods for assessing the fractal characteristics of wave forms varying with time, tissue density variation, and surface irregularities. Most importantly, the authors show how fractal variation defines internal spatial or temporal correlations within the fractal system or object. Simple, recursively applied rules can give rise to complex biological structures by a variety of methods. This suggests that genetic rules govern the general structuring of an organism, while rules implied by interactions at the biochemical, cellular, and tissue levels govern ontogenic development and therefore play the major role in the growth of an organism. Chaos, or non-linear dynamics, is introduced as a stimulating way to examine biological behavior at the cellular and whole animal levels, even though proof of the chaotic nature of normal physiologic events is as yet meager. The later chapters give sets of examples of structural and behavioral fractal phenomena in nerve and muscle, in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and in growth processes. Why molecular interactions and complex systems give rise to fractals is explored and related to the ideas of emergent properties of systems operating at high levels of complexity.

                Book Description

These 28 contributions by leading researchers - from such diverse disciplines as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and physiology - describe recent experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical analyses of the formation of spatial patterns in chemical and biological systems.

Chemical patterns have been systematically studied since the field was established by Alan Turing's landmark 1952 paper, "The chemical basis for morphogenesis," yet only recently have new experimental techniques and numerical analyses of reaction-diffusion equations opened the way to understanding stationary and traveling wave patterns.

This collection summarizes the exciting developments in this rapidly growing field. It shows that some biological patterns have been found to be strikingly similar to patterns found in simple, well-controlled laboratory chemical systems, that new chemical reactor designs make it possible to sustain chemical patterns and to study transitions between different kinds of patterns, and that nearly 40 years after Turing's paper, the patterns predicted by Turing have finally been observed in laboratory experiments.

Harry L. Swinney is Sid Richardson Foundation Regents Chair, Department of Physics, and Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics at the University of Texas at Austin. Valentin I. Krinsky is Head of the Autowave Laboratory, Institute of Biological Physics, Academy of Sciences, Pushchino, USSR.

Chapters cover: Spiral, Ring, and Scroll Patterns: Experiments. Spiral, Ring, and Scroll Patterns: Theory and Simulations. Fronts and Turing Patterns. Waves and Patterns in Biological Systems.

                    Book Description

This book discusses the application of the concepts of fractals and chaos to biomedical phenomena. In particular, it argues against the outdated notion of homeostasis; using biomedical data sets and modern mathematical concepts, the author attempts to convince the reader that life is at least a homeodynamic process with multiple states - each being capable of survival. Although relying heavily on the new mathematical ideas, the author has attempted to make the book self-contained. The mathematics is developed in a biological context and mathematical formulation for its own sake is avoided. In this book, the phenomena to be explained motivate the mathematical development rather than the other way round.

                      Book Description

This comprehensive book highlights soft computing and geostatistics applications in hydrocarbon exploration and production, combining practical and theoretical aspects.

It spans a wide spectrum of applications in the oil industry, crossing many discipline boundaries such as geophysics, geology, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. It is complemented by several tutorial chapters on fuzzy logic, neural networks and genetic algorithms and geostatistics to introduce these concepts to the uninitiated. The application areas include prediction of reservoir properties (porosity, sand thickness, lithology, fluid), seismic processing, seismic and bio stratigraphy, time lapse seismic and core analysis.

There is a good balance between introducing soft computing and geostatistics methodologies that are not routinely used in the petroleum industry and various applications areas. The book can be used by many practitioners such as processing geophysicists, seismic interpreters, geologists, reservoir engineers, petrophysicist, geostatistians, asset mangers and technology application professionals. It will also be of interest to academics to assess the importance of, and contribute to, R&D efforts in relevant areas.

                        Book Description

Ion scattering spectrometry, a powerful analytical tool used to determine the structure and composition of a substance, addresses critical problems in semiconductors, thin film growth, coatings, computer chips, magnetic storage devices, bioreactive surfaces, catalytic surfaces, and electrochemical surfaces (including the large battery industry). Principles and Applications of Ion Scattering Spectrometry: Surface Chemical and Structural Analysis represents the first and only book on this exciting field, seamlessly merging theoretical fundamentals with cutting-edge practical applications.

Author J. Wayne Rabalais, the world’s leading expert in ion scattering spectrometry, recognizes both the pedagogic and research needs of such a text and divides his work accordingly. Chapters 1 through 5 address senior undergraduates and beginning graduate students in chemical physics and include figures and illustrative diagrams intended to exemplify the discussions. Chapters 6 through 9 comprise material on the brink of current research and contain specific references to other sources at the end of each; further, chapter 10 is a bibliography of ion scattering publications. Topics covered include:

-Introductory, theoretical, and experimental aspects of ion scattering
                        -General features and structural analysis
-The recent technique of scattering and recoiling imaging spectrometry
                        -Examples of structural analysis
                        -Ion-surface charge exchange phenomena
                        -Hyperthermal ion-surface interactions

Engineers, researchers, professors, and postdoctoral associates involved in surface analysis, surface science, and studies of surfaces of materials will find Rabalais’ incomparable study a seminal moment in the advance of ion scattering spectrometry.

On the first page of It's My F---ing Birthday, the unnamed narrator initiates a new tradition: every year she will write "a personal state of the union to help me chart my profits and losses." We get these annual reports in chapters, from "Thirty-Six" to the concluding "Forty mmmmppphhh." In between lie several years of angst-ridden dating and parental torment in the already hallowed tradition of Bridget Jones's Diary. There are two differences: author Merrill Markoe, who spent many years writing for David Letterman (and collecting many Emmy awards), has a considerably darker comic vision than Helen Fielding. And she also resists the temptation to pair her narrator off in the service of a happy ending. In fact, this is one woman who finds out she's happier on her own: "One great thing I have noticed about living all by myself: All of my annoying habits seem to have disappeared." --Claire Dederer

                        Book Description

It’s My F---ing Birthday unfolds in seven state-of-my-life addresses a hapless high school art teacher writes to herself on consecutive birthdays. Through outrageously funny years of needling parents, self-absorbed boy-friends, riots, O.J., and Monica, she navigates a circuitous (and ultimately successful) route to happiness in a world where everything seems to conspire to the contrary.

5 out of 5 stars Single girls dating & mother angst done in comedy form.......2007-01-07

I found this to be the funniest book about dating and being single that I have ever read. I have re-read this book over & over, recommended it to my friends, bought them their own copies, I will never part with mine. It is very witty. If you have or have ever known people who think their parents are crazy, or you have been single, you will enjoy this book immensely.

5 out of 5 stars Laughed my head off.......2006-07-26

I don't know if it's because my sister, the day before I started this book, had the exact same experience of dining with our parents or what, but when I woke her at 2 am to read an excerpt, rather than hang up, she said "keep going."

This book is hilarious but also very poignant. It hit home, especially the mother-daughter relationship. The sarcasm throughout was on the mark. I also found myself tearing up a bit in a few spots.

Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.

                        4 out of 5 stars A fun little quickie.......2006-07-17

Approaching my upper thirtysomethings, I read this book with an "Amen, Sister!" frame of mind and knowing full well that I was not in for anything overly cerebral. It reads like a happy hour on ladies night, and as the last single woman in my circle of friends, I really appreciated and identified with this book. Many of the encounters the narrator recounts could have, down the last detail, been borrowed from events from my own life, and that's what makes it so funny. Oh, who am I kidding?! I laughed my [...] off. I recently celebrated my big 4-0 and I'm kind of itching to read it again.

                        4 out of 5 stars It's My F---ing Review.......2006-02-12

SUMMARY: an unnamed, unmarried, thirtysomething female narrator takes the audience, via one chapter, through one year in her life. Every birthday, she analyzes her life, resolves to make changes, and vows to learn something new. Unfortunately, she can't seem to break the patterns of behavior with which she's been suffering for most of her life: bad boyfriends, bad sex, bad parental relationships. While not technically a memoir, this novel is too poignant and simply too REAL to be pure fiction.

WHY YOU'LL LIKE IT: True moments of hilarity abound throughout the text. I believe Markoe didn't name her protagonist because it allows the reader to mold the character into whatever they choose -- and good luck not identifying with most of her travails!

WHY YOU WON'T: There are numerous cringeworthy moments where you want to grab the narrator by her shoulders and shake some sense into her. I had several moments where I actually spoke, "What are you THINKING?! Stand up for yourself!" It can get frustrating, but that's what makes it real.

BOTTOM LINE: Not esoteric or life-changing, this novel is a quick and frothy read which will make you laugh, make you think, and make you appreciate how normal your family is (in comparison).

4 out of 5 stars Hard to believe that this was a novel - .......2006-01-24

I have a hard time believing that this was a novel and not a personal memoir. (Or a biography of a close friend) Some of the events were so off the wall that while I can imagine them happening in real life, I have a hard time believing that someone could make this stuff up.

I liked it a great deal. The idea of noting the goings-on from year to year on one's birthday with your dysfunctional family are just precious.

Since I have it in my mind that this book is really non-fiction - I would have given it 5 stars save for the year when her Father comes around. I felt like that whole section was a bit more polished than it should have been.
