Book Description

Beginning with Darwin's work in the 1870s, Foundations of Animal Behavior selects the most important works from the discipline's first hundred years—forty-four classic papers—and presents them in facsimile, tracing the development of the field. These papers are classics because they either founded a line of investigation, established a basic method, or provided a new approach to an important research question.

The papers are divided into six sections, each introduced by prominent researchers. Sections one and two cover the origins and history of the field and the emergence of basic methods and approaches. They provide a background for sections three through six, which focus on development and learning; neural and hormonal mechanisms of behavior; sensory processes, orientation, and communication; and the evolution of behavior.

This outstanding collection will serve as the basis for undergraduate and graduate seminars and as a reference for researchers in animal behavior, whether they focus on ethology, behavioral ecology, comparative psychology, or anthropology.

1 out of 5 stars A Book Only an Ethologist Could Love.......2003-03-12

The subtitle for this mess should read "a collection of old, dry, and often inaccurate papers that only an ethologist could love." Seriously, though, this was a waste of paper and ink.

2 out of 5 stars At best an uneven foundation.......2002-02-06

After the publisher's excellent FOUNDATIONS OF ECOLOGY I was all set for an equally good set of papers and commentaries on Behaviour. Alas 'tis not yet to be! While this collection has some useful stuff it is by no means as far reaching or as selective as the ECOLOGY volume. Although the editors have picked out some key pieces, many of the papers reprinted here have vanished into deserved obscurity, and one emerges at the end with as long a list of "should have been includeds" as one went in with. Animal Behaviour was (and is) far more dynamic and exciting than this Foundation would have us think & I find that this volume stays in a remarkably pristine condition on my shelf rather than in the proper place for a good book -much marked up & in the eager hands of an enthusiastic student!

5 out of 5 stars The definitive work on human ethology.......2005-04-07

I might be slightly biased having studied under Eibl-Eibesfeldt personally, but this is the definitive work written on the subject written by the disciplines founder.
The protege of Konrad Lorenz, Eibl-Eibesfeldt's credentials as
a student of animal behavior are beyond reproach. True the book is a large tome but it is never dull and very approachable and well illustrated.. I recommend this book for students of many disciplines including biologists, anthropologists and psychologists. It offers a unique study of the human condition from a perspective most are unfamiliar with.
A great contribution to science by, in my opinion, one of the greatest minds of this century.

              Book Description

Weather and climate are of concern to virtually all countries worldwide. For many countries the economy depends largely on agriculture, which is significantly affected by variations in weather and climate. This volume contains many original findings on weather and climate related to atmospheric and oceanic processes through mathematical modeling, numerical simulations, and field experiments and it will be useful as a reading material in graduate level courses dealing with weather, climate, boundary layer and air quality. The scientific community at large, especially younger scientists, will find this book a useful addition to their personal and institutional libraries.

3 out of 5 stars Some great advice and good humor w/ too much right-wingisms.......2005-04-30

This is a letter I wrote to the author in response to the book, which pretty much covers my response:

Hi, Sheila. I've been reading your book, "Honey, I Don't Have a Headache Tonight," and I have enjoyed both your advice and your humor. I think you have written a needed and useful book.

However, I do have serious concerns with both the content and intention of your chapter on masculinity. My concerns come as both a Christian and as a feminist. As I was reading, I found myself wondering whether the intention of that chapter was really to help the reader have an improved sex life, or if it was to grind axes with feminists and liberals and others who don't align with the right-wing ideology that pervades much contemporary conservative Protestant thinking.

There were two passages that I found particularly troubling, especially from a Christian perspective. The first was the ridiculing of Bill Clinton for expressing empathy while lauding Donald Rumsfeld for lashing out with violence. I found myself dumbfounded and deeply upset by that. Which of those responses seems more like Jesus? Which way would we expect Jesus to respond, and which way did he ask that we respond? Without going into an unncessary and technical discussion of why retalitory violence is completely counter to Christian ethics, suffice to say that I cannot image that Jesus would agree with your assessment of those men, in any way.

And I had a similar response to your approval of a BBC article that bemoaned curricula that included questions beyond factual recall, with the author arguing that "[i]nstead of fact-retention and recall, in which girls and boys are roughly equal, the question now requires empathy, something that females excel in, and at which males are useless." God help us all if that is really the case! I'm just grateful that Jesus was not useless at empathy, and in fact excelled in it, and I am raising my son to excel in empathy, as well. It is certainly not unnatural to him. He will be one year old in two weeks, and he gets upset when another baby begins to cry, or when I am upset. Empathy appears to be natural for him, not something he is useless at, and I can only hope that the empathy he learns in our family and our church can sustain in him when our culture tries to kill it in him, telling him, as your book does, that it is not right for a man to have.

The fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, kindness, and self-control. While empathy is not explicitly mentioned, it is far easier to imagine it as part of the list than "adroitness at factual recall" or "tendency to lash out violently upon provocation." Those are the traits that Jesus' presence within us provides, whether we are male or female, and yet they look nothing like the masculinity that our culture lauds, or that you laud in the chapter I am discussing. They are the traits that, as wives, sisters, mothers, daughters, and friends, we should seek to encourage and admire in the men around us. In many ways, taking on those traits in a world that demands the exact opposite from men for them to be "real men" is a greater challenge than avoiding the temptations of sex and lust. And yet, the battle against lust is given so much more attention and validation than the battle to enact the fruits in a culture that asks men to deny those very traits. That is why I cannot help but think that many of your complaints in that chapter have less to do with either a desire to improve marriage relationships or a true contemplation of Christian manhood but rather a desire to grind axes with feminists and liberals and to encourage your readers to adopt right-wing views about gender, regardless of how well they actually conform to the example and teachings of Jesus.

I thank God that Jesus not only revealed God's amazing love to us, but also freed us from the shackles of the identities set for us by the "principalities and powers," among them the institutions that tell men that they must be violent, quick to anger, aggressive, militant, and without empathy. It is unfortunate that, today, the church--or at least some branches of it--is among the principalities and powers still promulgating those identities.

I pray that you take what I have written in the spirit it is intended, from someone who appreciates very much the work you have done and the wonderful advice you've given, but is deeply troubled by one particular section, in which I was left feeling like the spirit of grace and truth so evident in the rest of the book was lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, funny and true-to-life!.......2004-09-13

Women, if you want to REALLY understand your man's needs and expectations, this book is for you. This well-written tome is intended for women, but as a man, let me tell you, Shiela understands the opposite sex! My wife and I read it together and learned a lot. Shiela ends each chapter with advice for men...I appreciate that.

Shiela's writing is crisp; her observations fascinating; her conclusions dead-on. She offers hope to women with imperfect bodies and unpredictable sex drives. The book is tastefully modest but is still direct and to-the-point.

I predict that this book will help thousands of couples experience all the joy God intended for them in the bedroom. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome help for putting an end to those "headaches.".......2004-09-01

Shelia Wray Gregoire has an incredible way of telling it like it is in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, as did my husband, and will recommend it to ALL of my married friends. She hit every single nail on the head with all of my issues concerning sex and intimacy in a Christian marriage, helping me to feel that I am not alone or abnormal. Sex for women is a head thing and Sheila teaches you how to retrain your thoughts and emotions to better allow you to not only enjoy that intimacy with your husband, but to also WANT it!!! (something I had just about given up on) Another thing that was great was the way she shows you the men's perspective on sex. It helps a lot just knowing where he is coming from. Plus she gives a special section at the end of each chapter just for the men to read that hits the main points of what you just read (in case he doesn't want to read the whole book). This is a book I don't recommend lending to friends, only because you will want to hold on to it forever and make notes in it and highlite areas and reread it many, many times! This is the first book of hers I have read, but I plan to find To Love, Honor, and Vacuum because of how much I enjoyed reading this one.

When reading Tim Sandlin's Honey Don't, one is tempted to make comparisons to other writers of very funny books: Carl Hiaasen, Tom Robbins, Kinky Friedman, and Robert Ferrigno, for starters. But after consideration, the conclusion is that Sandlin is strictly sui generis. Nobody else is quite as over-the-top as Sandlin. His Gro Vont Trilogy, set in Wyoming, introduced readers to a motley group of free spirits, but this one has them all beat.

RC Nash, a journalist returning from a bungled European assignment, and Jimmy Sebastiano, a small-time Mafia bagman who is carrying $656K for delivery to his boss, improbably share a cab from Dulles to downtown D.C. RC gets home to find his girlfriend gone and his entire wardrobe cut into bite-size pieces; Jimmy surprises his girlfriend, the eponymous Honey, in flagrante delicto with someone who looks vaguely familiar. Turns out it's the President who, in his haste to leave, trips on his shorts, hits his head and dies. What to do with the body of the President? Enter Secret Service men; a gay Washington Redskins third-stringer' a Mafia don whose name is Rat's Ass and his savvy grandson; a coke-snorting VP; a First Lady who used to be a jazzercise instructor; the C.I.A., F.B.I. and a few walk-ons from the local Damien's Donuts.

At times, there are too many sub-plots in motion to keep track of the action, but Sandlin takes on every sacred cow in existence: ethnicity, gender, politics, sexual conduct, self-serving greed, and hypocrisy--and shatters them one by one. For a refreshing vacation from political correctness and a few good belly laughs, Honey Don't is a good choice. --Valerie Ryan

In this outrageously funny look at the inanities of our age, acclaimed author Tim Sandlin tells the slapstick tale of the accidental assassination of a goatish president, the Texas beauty who was bedding him, her certifiably stupid boyfriend who's fleeing the mob with $656,000 of dirty money in an attache and the President's head in a carry-all, and a fearless over-the-hill journalist who stumbles upon the crime of the century. With an oddball cast of conniving White House staffers, corrupt politicos, sleazy journalists, and rancid pro football coaches, this novel is a brilliant send-up of modern America-and the D.C. three-ring circus-at its most absurdly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Not One Of His Best.......2007-03-11

To compare Tim Sandlin with Tom Robbins, as "one dust jacket critic" has, is a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless,I remain a fan, anxious to get my hands on his next offering.

Having said this, Honey Don't was a mild disappointment. As in all Sandlin novels, the prose was entertaining and often humorous, but the book didn't seem to reach the levels of keen social awareness and psychological insight that we've seen in this fine writer's previous efforts, most notably The GroVont Trilogy.

I don't mean to dog this book. If you're a Sandlin fan as I am, by all means read this book. Just don't expect too much.

5 out of 5 stars Honey, honey, honey.......2005-02-14

If there's such a thing as a typical Tim Sandlin novel, this probably ain't it. This is funnier in an over-the-top sort of way than his four-book trilogy, which is just plain funny in a Tim Sandlin sort of way. One way to look at this, if you're so inclined, is to consider Honey Don't as Tim's answer to my novel, Heart Seizure wherein I created an unfortunate FBI Agent by the name of Sandlin (in Tim's honor). In Honey Don't, Tim paid me back by creating a Senator Fitzhugh who is, well, lacking in several key personality traits. I think I lied to Tim soon after this came out, told him I read it and loved it. Truth is, I just got around to reading it but I was right about loving it. Honey is a sweetie, check her out.

2 out of 5 stars Honey, Don't Must Have Been Phoned In.......2004-04-20

Tim Sandlin is not up to his usual standard in Honey, Don't - and he knows it. Midway through the story he describes a character by describing what she sees as she looks into a mirror. Later on the same page that very character decides that if she were President she would make it a felony offense for a fictional character to describe herself by looking in a mirror. Things are bad when the author himself is pointing out the cliches he stoops to using.

The plot itself is interesting and deserved better. Honey and the President of the United States are interrupted mid-assignation and, in the resulting mayhem, the President dies. Honey and her boyfriend Jimmy (the interruptor) endeavor to get out of their jam and along the way collect a motley assortment of helpers and hangers on, including a down on his luck journalist who provides the brains of the outfit.

Sounds fun right? It is - if you skip about 125 pages in the middle. We learn a lot about people who don't matter to the story and the writing is packed with more of the aforementioned cliches. Would have been a great novella, but as it is it's not really worth the effort.

2 out of 5 stars Tim Sandlin is a wonderful writer, this is a bad book.......2004-01-14

I think Tim Sandlin is great. I've read every book he's published. I looked forward to his next book, and I'm still looking forward to his next book despite Honey Dont. At a reading, Mr Sandlin made known that this was the first book that wasn't about himself. So perhaps it's a transitional necessity, an experiment, and good for him. Artists need to stretch. I certainly hope he keeps writing. I hope the Honey Dont becomes a movie and Tim becomes rich off it. The characters are unbelievable yet wacky enough that coupled with the plot (it's really plot driven - ug)that a decent movie could come out of it. Anyhow, my two cents, keep writing and best of luck Tim.

3 out of 5 stars Fine For What It Is (Beach Reading).......2003-11-23

Never heard of Sandlin before this, but I"m a sucker for books set in DC, so I picked this up. What I discovered is a light, fluffy farce-perfect is you're in the mood for something requiring little concentration, but possibly disappointing if you like your stories to have a little meat on their bones. The style and tone is not unlike someone like Carl Hiaasen, plenty of snappy chatter, pop culture references, and comedic murders. The story starts by introducing RC Nash, a 40ish journalist in decline, and Jimmy Sebastiano, a smalltime mafia bagman. The story is set in motion when Jimmy's catches his delectable girlfriend Honey in a comprising position with the President and the president accidentally dies in the struggle that follows.

Fleeing the scene with the dead president's body, Honey and Jimmy embroil Honey's old friend Farlow (a gay professional football player) in their problems. Soon, through a variety of contrivances (you just have to roll with them), RC shows up and joins them on the lam. Meanwhile, the White House-spearheaded by a nasty chief of staff and the astute and efficient first lady-is quietly trying to locate the missing president. However, the foursome (five if you count the prez), is also being pursued by Mafia don Gino Olivetti, who is after the $650,000 Jimmy was supposed to deliver to him. Lots of running around, shoot-outs, machinations, sexual tension, and light satire ensue. Populated with nothing but a series of cardboard characters (the nasty scheming editor, the airhead vice-president, the crazy homeless guy, and so on), each with a signature tic or phrase, the novel is well-suited to Hollywood or a lazy summer day by the pool.

                    Book Description

A practical and often humorous book that gives easy-to-follow advice on how to turn up the heat in a marriage. Between kids, a job, housework, church, and family ties, the desire for intimacy in marriage can drop to the bottom of the list for many wives. With biblical insight, the author shows women how intimacy can once again become a positive light in their marriage, filled with great benefits both personally and relationally.

Mark, Jonah, Nicko, Azza, and Mitch, a.k.a. the Coconuts, a.k.a. the Convicts, are set to have the time of their lives at pioneer camp. Wattle and daub building, great food, blood-sucking leeches, mud fights, nose-biting horses, half-wild wombats, pirate plays... it's everything they dreamed of. Until the Bomb shows up. Mr. Cromwell is the dourest, cruelest, most unfair teacher at school--and is now a camp chaperon. Crom the Bomb has a particular sour spot in his evil heart for Jonah, and takes every opportunity to make his life miserable. The feud reaches a fever pitch when the Bomb and Jonah inadvertently are paired in a canoe trip, and disappear around the river bend. Can all the Coconuts survive this camping trip uncracked?

Mark's voice as narrator in this story is flawless. He is, through and through, a sixth-grade boy, complete with delight in the grossest things and hilarity over goofball practical jokes and muddy exploits. William Clarke's kidlike drawings of ant-covered boys and baby wombats combine nicely with Elizabeth Honey's photographs of rowdy campers to create a totally boyish document of a week at camp. Book Description

Adults won’t find this very tasteful. Sorry, it can’t be helped, it’s what happened.

Mark Ryder gives us the good, the bad, and the messy in this antic account of his friends’ misadventures during a week of school-camp in the Australian Outback. Camp is everything the boys expect and more–there are caves to explore, mud fights, bad showers, great food, hidden candy, wombats, and leeches. Then disaster strikes: Mr. Cromwell (a.k.a. Crom the Bomb, or simply The Bomb) arrives as a substitute chaperon. The boys are sure their summer is ruined. But in the end, it’s what the boys do to The Bomb that sets off an explosion. . . .

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2005-04-20

I am sixteen years old and Australian. Don't Pat The Wombat was my favourite book when I was ten, and I recently reread it. I'd forgotton how funny and accurate it was.

First, some background information about the setting. Despite what it may appear, the kids are not going to summer camp. They are going to school camp. The difference is, it happens during school time, and not during summer. The summer holidays happen over Christmas, and they only last for six weeks, so no summer camp. Edwina and Helmut are not counsellors. They are backpackers how happened to be in the area. Also, the slang is fairly accurate, if I recall primary school correctly.

Don't Pat The Wombat is about a group of boys in year six, who have called themselves the Coconuts. They're the troublemakers of their class. A few weeks before camp, they become friends with a new kid named Jonah, who is from a rural area. Jonah makes enemies with Brian Cromwell, a cruel teacher that the Coconuts have nicknamed the Bomb, because he explodes. They go to camp in the bush, and have fun. Most of the book is taken up with the description of the fun, but towards the end it develops a more serious theme. Jonah starts opening up slightly, and has an encounter with the Bomb.

The book has a very light hearted tone, which is why I think I loved it so much. You could count the serious bits on the fingers of one hand. The characters are believable twelve-year-olds, and act in a believable way. I was never one of the troublemakers myself, but I remember school camp, before popularity became everything and kids still listened to the teachers. And the lollies, who could forget the lollies?

Elizebeth Honey has written a few other novels, of which the Stella Streets are the closest in tone to this one. I'd recomend those as well.

5 out of 5 stars Australian slang and wombats galore.......2004-04-18

It's no secret that there are thousands of fantastic unknown children's books out there. I would even go so far as to estimate that over 60% of the best kid books disappear without so much as a ripple under the waves of subsequently published literature. So this is all the more reason to appreciate a well-written unknown book when you find it. That book, such as it is, is Elizabeth Honey's "Don't Pat the Wombat". A fine frolicsome Aussie import, this tale of kids, camp, and canoes is one of the best kept secrets in fiction today. And it's freakin' hilarious.

The plot follows a group of roughly ten year-old boys called The Coconuts. They named themselves that after the narrator(nickname: Exclamation Mark)'s mom drove them around singing, "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts..." The other boys include Wormz, Nicko, Azza, Mitch, and Jonah. Jonah, to be honest, is the real hero of this tale. A calm silent boy, Jonah earns the wrath of the school's most dreaded teacher, The Bomb. When the boys head out for summer camp (an event that included not only the boys but their teachers from school and two parents) it's just their bad luck that The Bomb comes along for the ride.

First of all, this book is undoubtedly one of the funniest I've read in a very long time. Funny books never get any respect, you know. Not adult funny books, nor children's funny books. This is a story where the narrator's mom plays on a basketball team called The Cellulites. The pictures, supposedly drawn by the author, are a hoot and a holler (and frighteningly similar to pictures an actual ten year-old would draw). And the storyline has the boys pulling the kind of innocent pranks you'd expect of them. I was particularly taken with a moment where the boys (after a rousing mud fight) decided to play dead to see what their German counselor Helmut would do:

"Oh, they're dead!" goes Helmut. "What a pity, I'd better bury them," and he started shoveling mud on us.

It's that kind of story. On top of that, there's some interesting Australian language to grapple with. America is the kind of country that takes great pains in changing words in the Harry Potter books that appear "too British" for delicate American children's ears. Apparently, Australian slang is a completely different matter. Initially I was quite taken aback by the amount of words I either couldn't understand or couldn't pronounce. Here's a great example. It describes the teacher nicknamed Chook:

"If something goes right, she says, `Jolly beaut!' and if something goes wrong, she goes, `Blinking heck!' For something amazing, she says, `By jingo!' She wears Daisy Duck shoes".

The book's full of this kind of thing. When a boy calls his teacher a nerd his mother patiently corrects him and says the terms he's looking for is "duffer". Slang includes words like "derr" as well. I mean, I think it's great! More books should be coming into our country with these kinds of words. But if you're not prepared for them, it's a bit of a shock.

If I have any objections with this book it's that it's too darn short. Too short by far. You finally are beginning to get a little more insight into the characters and before you know it, time's up! Story's done. All in all, however, I consider this book one of the lost greats. It'd make a fantastic read-aloud to those students that are reluctant to read. The characters are likable, the plot is quick, and the photos and pictures very funny. For a sure fire crowd pleaser (if they can get past the slang) give this book a try. The funniest Australian children's book I have ever, or may ever, read.

5 out of 5 stars The Land Down Under!.......2001-12-01

Elizabeth Honey is the author of Don't Pat the Wombat has a great idea for a book. She writes about a kid named Mark and his friends are going to camp with their teachers! One of their teachers nicknamed the Boom, because he hates all kids and tries to drown a kid named Journa! Mark and his friends have to save Jouna from the Boom. This book is funny and exciting. That's why you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Gross, tastless and laugh-out-loud funny.......2000-06-25

Remember summer camp in all it's wonderful, horrible glory? Elizabeth Honey does and she brings the memories back to life with this outrageous and funny tale about a group of Aussie sixth grade boys (known as the Coconuts and later, the Convicts) off to camp.

Narrated by Mark (or "Exclamation Mark"), he gives us the tell-all tales about his friends and their antics. They befriend newcomer Jonah, who takes on the Convict's ultimate nemesis, teacher Mr. Cromwell, a.k.a. the Bomb. ("Cromwell at camp is like Darth Vader at your birthday party.")

This a frenetic and fun book, documenting the misadventures of outback camplife (complete with mud fights, exploring, an end-of-camp pageant and of course, wombats!

                      Definately worth a read!

                          Book Description

Through the spiritual exploration of dream interpretations, the enigmatic Pastor Woodrow Blake relates how our dreams provide parables for everyday life. From fighting the evil in this world, to discovering our calling - brother Blake creates and uncovers personal truths about the ways in which we can learn from our dreams.

The title draws upon dreams where Pastor Blake is engaged in a spiritual war. Don't Wake Me Honey, I'm Winning is his mantra for keeping the spirit being alive through these confrontations with negative spirits and evil in his nighttime visions.

This book offers a better understanding of the mystical intricacy of not just interpreting the meaning of our dreams, but changing the way we live through these interpretations. This book should be read by those interested in gaining new perspectives on dreaming, religion, and how spirituality and God's will run through both.
