Book Description
Only in Australasia can the effect of technological societies on river systems be truly analysed and this unique, accessible book covers key issues in river management from a geomorphological perspective.
Australia and New Zealand were colonised only 200 years ago by central bureaucratic administrations. For the whole period of European settlement most river management activities have been carried out by government agencies and the record of their activities is relatively complete. These countries therefore provide good case studies for the impact of technological societies on river systems, having transformed their rivers in a short time from their 'natural' into a heavily managed condition.
Geomorphology provides the scientific basis for much of our understanding of river behaviour and geomorphologists are now actively involved in the management process. This book provides a collection of case studies, the first to be produced to date, which describe the management of rivers covering issues of environmental flow, stream condition, mining and extractive activities, river channel change, river stabilisation, river regulation and urban streams.
The book will prove invaluable to geomorphologists, river engineers, stream ecologists, river managers, and environmental impact assessors involved in river management and restoration.

Explanations and descriptions have been expanded, and additional information has been added on high Tc superconductors, diamond films, "buckminsterfullerenes," and thin magnetic materials. Adopted by many colleges and universities, this text has proven to be a solid introduction to the electrical, optical and magnetic properties of materials.
Key Features
* Contains comprehensive coverage of electronic properties in metals, semiconductors, and insulators at a fundamental level
* Stresses the use of wave properties as an integrating theme for the discussion of phonons, photons, and electrons
* Includes a complete set of illustrative problems along with exercises and answers
* Features a careful indication of both Gaussian and SI unit systems
Customer Reviews:
concise resource.......2006-08-15
When you're ten years out of school, and you still reach for a book you used in college, you know its valuable. I reach for Bube as a refresher very frequently. Its not flowery, but it has just enough figures and just enough math and explanation to cover most electronic phenomena. Photoemission, field emission, photoelectric effects, schottky barriers, etc. are covered well enough so that you can tackle a calculation of a particular phenomenon when necessary.
A great introductory, "big picture" book.......1999-04-12
This book is a good place to go for explanations when you get lost in the muck of proofs. If you expect it to be rigorous, of course you will be disappointed. The synopses say it is for people who have never been through these topics before. This book is invaluable when you are going through notes and derivations and forget what the heck assumptions were made and what you're trying to get to. The beauty of it is that it isn't weighed down by too much information. It gives a good overview of exactly what it says: Electrons in Solids.
stay away.......1998-06-22
A pretty crummy book for the price. It's pretty short, the explanations aren't very good, and I don't particularly like the chosen topics either. You'd be better off with Kittel, and Kittel is a terrible book. I've read this, Kittel, Omar, Ashcroft+Mermin, and Burns, and this is the worst. It doesn't tell you enough to build a foundation for anything and I didn't find a single person in my class of 12 or so who liked this book. How bad is this book? I had to write my own table of physical constants on the inside cover because this book doesn't have them. I'd buy Omar instead, followed by Kittel, followed by anything else but Bube.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully lucid. I should have read this book long ago........2007-08-01
Short Review:
The photos and plots in this book are exemplary. They complement the material perfectly, building up intuitional understanding of the phenomena at the same time the text allows you to handle the physics mathematically.
Each chapter follows logically. Everything builds up step by step from the most basic case of a simple harmonic oscillator, and the book has a feeling of progression that encouraged me to keep going. Every chapter brought new understanding to things I vaguely knew about, but was fuzzy on quite why it was that way.
Although the basic systems discussed are pendulums, masses-on-springs, and linear strings, the text also contains plenty of information on how the theory built by examining these simple systems can apply to many other places where the same differential equations apply - especially electric circuits, but also acoustics.
Vibrations and Waves does a superb job as a concise and clear introduction to how wave phenomena work.
Longer Review:
I recently read this book as review while preparing for a more advanced class on quantum mechanics (a theory about waves). I had previously taken a course on vibrations and waves using the (out of print) text by Crawford. Although Crawford's book is probably good, I never read the text carefully though because it was monstrously long.
French presented itself as friendly and readable, without bogging me down in unnecessary detail. It turned out to be exactly that. The chapters were short enough I could read them in one sitting. The problems varied from straightforward applications of what was already stated in the text to ones that made me think for a while, without being so overbearing as to waste my time or become unduly frustrating. There are also answers printed in the back of the book - in my opinion absolutely essential for any book to be used for self-study.
I actually enjoyed reading Vibrations and Waves, which is not the norm for reading physics texts, at least for me. The photos were gorgeous. They were black and white, and not fancy, but the experimental setup used to get the photos was often both clever and instructive. Just when it got difficult to understand just what the equations were saying, there was a picture to demonstrate the system's response. The Lissajous figures and pictures of nodal lines of 2-D surfaces were interesting enough to be worth looking at in their own right.
After reading this book, I feel like I have a much firmer understanding of coupled oscillators and coupled differential equations, the wave equation, refraction, diffraction, and other boundary effects, which were all things I knew enough about to be able to describe, roughly, but not enough about to claim a useful comprehension of the subject.
The introduction of complex numbers and the complex exponential is truly masterful.
I would like to have the time to read French's other introductory physics books, but even if I don't I'll remain glad to have read this one.
Misses a lot.......2007-05-23
The book gives a good introduction to the concept of waves, beginning with vibrational modes of coupled oscillators of springs and strings. However, it neglects analysis of Electromagnetic waves that I feel are not a far cry from the topics presented. I also think that more information could be given on dispersion, mediums, and boundary reflections and transmissions.
As a Student.......2007-01-05
I recently took a class on Vibrations and Waves and the professor ended up using this book mainly for the course. It was somewhat difficult to read through and the material in the book often has little to do with the actual practice problems. Also, there are no examples and many of the chapters refuse to go into important detail of some topics, assuming the reader to know a good deal.
If only every textbook was this good..........2006-12-03
I used this book instead of the originally assigned text (H.J. Pain's truly awful "Physics of Vibrations and Waves") in a class I took recently. It was a pleasure to read.
In spite of the fact that the book is quite short (and quite compact in your bag), it covers the material very thoroughly. The author writes clearly and with a lot of attention to the needs of the student. French's style is also very lively and makes you want to read on instead of feeling you are obligated to. The problems at the end of each chapter are excellent. It is also inexpensive.
All in all, quite a gem in this day of boring, incomprehensible, too-heavy-to-carry $120 textbooks that arrive in a "new" less readable edition every year. If only every textbook could be like this.
It isn't quite perfect -- every once in a while a derivation gets obscure and a few topics aren't covered -- but it is very, very good. I highly recommend it.
Very nice book on the subject.......2006-05-26
This is a terrific book. It would benefit slightly from incorporating matrices in one part of the text, but given the level of student it's geared toward, that's not a fatal omission. French's style is clear and thorough. I am a fan of all his books, and have no qualms recommending this one.

Introduction to Solid State Physics
ASIN: 0748406603 |
Book Description
Assuming an elementary knowledge of quantum and statistical physics, this book provides a comprehensive guide to principal physical properties of condensed matter, as well as the underlying theory necessary for a proper understanding of their origins. The subject matter covers the principal features of condensed matter physics, but with particular accent on the properties of metal alloys. Relevance to technical applications is recognized.
Customer Reviews:
Nice supplemental read...........2002-12-16
Any student of Solid State Physics should have Ashcroft & Mermin, or possibly Kittel, as their primary text, but I find Myers to be an excellent supplementary text. Solid State is a difficult subject, and it takes some time to understand the physical signficance of some of the abstract concepts. I read chapters 5 (lattice vibrations), 6 (free electron gas), 7 (periodic potential), and 11 (magnetism) to supplement Kittel and my Solid State class and found Myers approach to be very refreshing. Myers does an excellent job explaining difficult concepts in various appendices; such as exchange and correlation energies in the appendix on Exchange and Many Body Interactions. The supplemental appendices are at the ends of chapters, not the end of the text. Myers' approach is great for a materials scientist who must also be cognizant of periodic trends and the practical implications of solid state physics. When a subject such as the impact of a periodic potential on the electron wave function is presented, Myers understands that his readers are trying to understand the entire periodic table and not simply a few specific examples. Myers builds on the alkali metal atom models with discussions of how the periodic potential perturbs d-electrons or even f-electrons, or how the periodic potential is impacted by alloying. If you like to understand the concepts behind the equations, then Myers is a great text.

Verbose, unintelligable.......2001-12-10
I think the other reviewers are my classmates. I also found the book overly wordy, but meager with the derivations. The homework problems are often unclear. I found Kittel's text much clearer and straightforward and, surprisingly, more up-to-date.
Buy Kittel instead.......2001-11-22
I am taking a course in solid state right now and while I appreciate Myers being "the funniest solid state book," a self-claimed title, the book is nebulous, does not properly explain the fundamentals, and, even worse, is not self contained. When doing the homework assigned out of this book, many times, I have to look up other references to finish the problem.
Buy Kittel's instead - there is a reason why almost everyone uses his book.
Impenetrable.......2001-09-28
The author makes no attempt to emphasize key points over tangents. The text is very verbose and encourages the reader's mind to wander. Additionally, the problems don't really follow the material discussed. Calculations are often mysterious.

Book Description
Skeeve is living large as the president and founder of M.Y.T.H. Inc., a co-op of magik consultants-until his demon cohort, Aahz, resigns and leaves in a huff. Now Skeeve finds himself in the missing Pervect's home dimension, the worst neighborhood in the galaxy.
Customer Reviews:
What was expected.......2001-11-15
Personally, I dont' understand the direction some of the other reviews have taken. I enjoyed the book (As I had all the books preceeding) immensely.
Though Perv wasn't quite as bad as I would have expected it to be (Picture New York, only every fat half-drunk slob has the proportional strength to dismember you in seconds, magic is interwoven to technology, and food has a tendency to leave yoru bowl if you don't eat it quickly), it was still an interesting world for Skeeve to get lost in.
As for Skeeve, we get to see that beneath the exterior we see him try to build up in the previous novel, he's still nervous, inexperienced, and for once, finding himself without the security blanket of his friends that he has been able to rely on up to this novel. Fortunatly, the dumb luck that he possessed from page one of book one still remains, and he needs it.
Due to it's late nature in the seires, one would be recommended to read eariler novels first, but if it's your first time in the myth world, it can still be a fun book, if not one as understood (Several elements in this book will make much less sense).
myth-ing the point.......2001-11-08
I love his books (up to now). I think they are inspired, quite often he is better than Pratcett, and lets face it that is good. However the main feeling I get form this book is that it lack humility, subject and perhaps most importantly a point. It has good jokes, some excelent moments but overall it has no heart. Sorry Robert but this one fails to impress.
Skeeve is too stupid in this one........1999-10-26
I greatly enjoyed the first six books in this series, but Skeeve has learned a lot in them. He can't still be this dumb. I enjoyed Aahz's world of Perv, though.
to myth or not to myth.......1999-03-06
I have been astounded once again with Robert Asprin's myth series. The series just keeps getting better and better the more you read. The way he portrays everyone. Myth Directions, M.Y.T.H. INC. Link, and HIT OR MYTH are only a few to prove what a great writer this man is. I'd recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
A very funny book, worth re-reading a million times!.......1998-12-10
Having read every book in the Myth series by Robert Aspirin, I can say that it is very good. Mixing slapstick with a dry wit has made it a very good read. I salute the author and hope to aspire to his stature some day!
