Book Description
This book is intended as an introduction to classical water wave theory for the college senior or first year graduate student. The material is self-contained; almost all mathematical and engineering concepts are presented or derived in the text, thus making the book accessible to practicing engineers as well.
The book commences with a review of fluid mechanics and basic vector concepts. The formulation and solution of the governing boundary value problem for small amplitude waves are developed and the kinematic and pressure fields for short and long waves are explored. The transformation of waves due to variations in depth and their interactions with structures are derived. Wavemaker theories and the statistics of ocean waves are reviewed. The application of the water particle motions and pressure fields are applied to the calculation of wave forces on small and large objects. Extension of the linear theory results to several nonlinear wave properties is presented. Each chapter concludes with a set of homework problems exercising and sometimes extending the material presented in the chapter. An appendix provides a description of nine experiments which can be performed, with little additional equipment, in most wave tank facilities.
Customer Reviews:
Good accessible book on water wave mechanics.......2006-04-05
The objectives of this book are to introduce the reader to the fundamental understanding of water wave theory and to apply the basic physical principles to the coastal and ocean environments. The prerequisites for understanding this book are knowledge of fluid mechanics, basic calculus, and differential equations. Thus it is presumed that the student is an engineer, and probably an ocean engineer. This book is really quite accessible. I am an electrical engineer and I have been using it to help perform animations and visual effects regarding water and its properties. Its clear examples have been quite valuable in turning seemingly complex equations into actual physical phenomena that can be measured. I consider it a steal at its low price considering its content. Also, it is good as a textbook since it contains plenty of homework problems at the end of each chapter.
The table of contents are:
Introduction to Wave Mechanics
A Review of Hydrodynamics and Vector Analysis (Eulerian and Lagrangian view, Navier-Stokes Equation)
Small-Amplitude Water Wave Theory Formulation and Solution
Engineering Wave Properties
Long Waves
Wavemaker Theory
Wave Statistics and Spectra
Wave Forces
Waves Over Real Seabeds
Nonlinear Properties Derivable from Small-Amplitude Waves
Nonlinear Waves
A Series of Experiments for a Laboratory Course Component in Water Waves
Book Description
The aim of this book is to present selected theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering, all from the deterministic point of view. The bulk of the material deals with the linearized theory.

Book Description
The goals of wind wave research are relatively well defined: to be able to predict the wind wave field and its effect on the environment. That environment could be natural (beaches, the atmosphere etc.) or imposed by human endeavour (ports, harbours, coastal settlements etc.). Although the goals are similar, the specific requirements of these various fields differ considerably.
This book attempts to summarise the current state of this knowledge and to place this understanding into a common frame work. It attempts to take a balanced approach between the pragmatic engineering view of requiring a short term result and the scientific quest for detailed understanding. Thus, it attempts to provide a rigorous description of the physical processes involved as well as practical predictive tools.
Product Description
This book is intended as an introductory textbook for graduate students and as a reference book for engineers and scientists working in the field of coastal engineering. As such it gives a description of the theories for wave and nearshore hydrodynamics. It is meant to de-mystify the topics and hence starts at a fairly basic level. It requires knowledge of fluid mechanics equivalent to a first year graduate level. At the end of each topic, an attempt is made to give an overview of the present stage of the scientific development in that area with numerous references for further studies.

Book Description
This volume introduces particle image velocimetry (PIV), a technique for water wave measurement in the laboratory and in the open ocean. It discusses the turbulent dissipation, Reynolds stresses and vortical structures in boundary layers of the sea bed, as well as ships, ship wakes, propulsion hydrodynamics, cavitation and free surface waves. Upwelling behind crests of micro-breaking ocean surface waves (important for the exchange of greenhouse gases between air and water) and large amplitude internal solitons in the ocean are measured. The book includes velocities and accelerations in breaking ocean waves, run-up, interaction between strong waves and breakwaters, as well as a concise description of the state-of-the-art PIV technique.
This book has its origins in a meeting on PIV and water waves which was held in Cambridge in 2002. The main body of the book consists of six overview or in-depth articles by invited authors who are specialists in their respective fields, as well as practitioners of PIV. A complete set of abstracts from the meeting is enclosed. The book is well suited for scientists who want to acquaint themselves with current experimental hydrodynamics, as well as for researchers and graduate students who are already working in the field or plan to do so.
Book Description
The interaction of acoustic fields with submerged elastic structures, both by propagation and scattering, is being investigated at various institutions and laboratories world-wide with ever-increasing sophistication of experiments and analysis. This book offers a collection of contributions from these research centers that represent the present state-of-the-art in the study of acoustic elastic interaction, being on the cutting edge of these investigations. This includes the description of acoustic scattering from submerged elastic objects and shells by the Resonance Scattering Theory of Flax, Dragonette and Überall, and the interaction of these phenomena in terms of interface waves. It also includes the use of this theory for the purpose of inverse scattering, i.e. the determination of the scattered objects properties from the received acoustic backscattered signals. The problem of acoustically excited waves in inhomogeneous and anisotropic materials, and of inhomogeneous propagating waves is considered. Vibrations and resonances of elastic shells, including shells with various kinds of internal attachments, are analyzed. Acoustic scattering experiments are described in the time domain, and on the basis of the Wigner-Ville distribution. Acoustic propagation in the water column over elastic boundaries is studied experimentally both in laboratory tanks, and in the field, and is analyzed theoretically. Ultrasonic nondestructive testing, including such aspects like probe modelling, scattering by various types of cracks, receiving probes and calibration by a side-drilled hole is also studied in details.
A comprehensive picture of these complex phenomena and other aspects is presented in the book by researchers that are experts in each of these domains, giving up-to-date accounts of the field in all these aspects.

Customer Reviews:
Love plus humor equals a great read.......2007-06-10
The title Teeth in a Pickle Jar grabs the readers attention and the story keeps the intrigue going from the first page until the last. The characters are very believable from the Italian Mamma who wants to feed everyone in sight to Megan who at first is afraid to love a younger man, but as the love grows so does her confidence. This story makes you laugh and cry and keeps the readers attention until the end
A Disappointment.......2007-06-05
My book club chose this book based on good reviews it had earned. However we were all disappointed. It wasn't at all what we had hoped for. The characters were flat at best, occasionally just plain unbelievable, the plot was predictable, and the theme was unclear. The main romantic interest was too good to be true, the mother of the previous lover was too bad to be true, and the whole book was just not plausible. If you're looking for something genuinely touching about children and a second chance at love, look at some books by Anna Quindlen, or even Jodi Piccoult. This one is not a winner.
Light-hearted reading.......2006-08-30
This is a book written by a woman for women, Yet, as a male, I enjoyed it. Firstly, it was witty. Secondly, it dealt with a romance between an older woman and younger man that was originally plotted and sounded believable. There is an element of pathos in the story.
couldn't put the book down.......2006-03-07
Parental upheaval, death, surprise love connection and an untimely pregnancy deliver realism and emotion for a `can't put the book down' read.
Italian heritage, cyber romantic interlude, and an unexpected pregnancy are all key factors in H. B. Milligan's "Teeth in a Pickle Jar".
Meagan Gigliardi grew up with her mom's strict Italian heritage. Dreams of joining the Peace Corps were quashed and the regret in not following her heart remained.
Zoom now to one foolish night to remove the `virgin' status and you have an unexpected pregnancy, a rash decision to marry this unattractive rich boy and a whole lotta trouble from the mother-in-law.
Yet Megan slowly begins to place her life the way it should be all due to an unknown man she's been communicating with over the Internet for a web design.
Miss Milligan adds the realistic pain of death, decisions to make, and a fantastic love relationship to round out this highly recommended novel.
Although not exactly a Danielle Steele read, Milligan does have that same flair to draw her readers into her character's situations and emotions. Makes for an amazing winter read with a feel good experience throughout. The first person point of view only enhances the novel and the superb beginning with correlating ending- an open letter-adds authenticity to Meagan Gigliardi.

Funny and Touching.......2006-01-24
"What about sunsets and sunrises, the ebbs and tides of my own life? I think about the still-new love that suddenly, unexpectedly crashed into me like a powerful wave. The love that lit up the darkest corners of my heart and filled me with the greatest joy I have ever known."
Sitting on a beach as the sun gives way to dusk and then dark, Megan holds onto an envelope from Mamma, waiting until the last possible minute to open it up and read the letter waiting inside. H.B. Milligan's Teeth in a Pickle Jar is the story of second chances and taking risks, of finding love in unexpected places and letting one's heart be open to joys and sorrows. Megan is a 44-year-old single mother, living in an apartment and teaching French. With a daughter in college and a brash, opinionated mother, Megan is living her life day to day, not really happy but getting by.
When she decides to have a web site designed for her business, she meets a designer named Brent online. They chat via instant messenger, and before long their chats become personal. Each feels a connection, a chemistry, despite the distance between them - Megan is in New York, while Brent is in Florida. When Megan finds out Brent is just 30, she goes through the reasons in her head why it can't work. But despite it all, the connection is forged, and Megan allows herself to go with her feelings.
After Brent makes a couple of trips to New york to see Megan in person, Megan takes a trip to Florida. There she meets Brent's sister, who is opposed to the idea of their May-December romance, and Megan winds up feeling that she's right. Having lost faith that they can make it work, Megan nearly sabotages the budding relationship.
Back in New York, Megan focuses on her life there. She's angry with her mother for not accepting Brent and failing to support her daughter's interests. She's worried about her sick neighbor, Tina. But mostly, she misses Brent and regrets not trusting him more.
Teeth in a Pickle Jar left me with tears in my eyes as I finished reading it. I wasn't sure how much I was going to like the book as I started it, and certain details here and there didn't sound terribly authentic, but the further I got into the book, the more moving the dialogue become and the more engrossed I became in the characters' lives. Arguments with Mamma sounded like they could have easily been real words that Milligan put down on paper. Milligan is the 'older woman' in her own marriage, so she writes with a knowing voice when Megan speaks of her insecurities as well as her confidence.
Despite some weaknesses when it comes to dealing with her own mother for much of the story, Megan is a remarkably strong woman. Pregnant after her first sexual experience, she stands up to her monster of a mother-in-law and never backs down. Putting myself in those shoes, I don't know that I could have held my head that high, particularly at that young age. She also learns from that experience, and from the way her Mamma treats her, and gives her daughter the support she needs when life throws her a curve ball.
Teeth in a Pickle Jar is about being hopeful and supportive, about believing in dreams and having the courage to go after them. How much of it is fiction and how much of it is based on Milligan's own life, I don't know, but overall it is a story of faith and family, of loving and being loved. The story ends where it started, with Megan reading the letter from Mamma on that darkened beach. The plot moves along a bit fast at times, but the dialogue and characters are believable, and the story funny and touching.
