Flooding events often eradicate all of the individuals of the earthworm species Lumbricus rubellus living in river floodplains, although earthworm cocoons usually survive immersion, permitting populations to recover after the flood waters recede. Yet, if the area is flooded again before earthworms hatching from cocoons or migrating from adjacent areas reach reproductive maturity, it is unlikely that their populations will recover. The objective of this study is to determine the importance of the length of the dry period for population recovery in L. rubellus. Earthworms were collected at three floodplain sites along the Rhine River that were frequently, moderately or seldom flooded. Reproductively mature L. rubellus from the frequent flooded site were half the weight and probably younger than those from the other sites. A mechanistic population model was used to estimate the time for earthworm development from hatching to reproductive maturity, and to calculate the probability of population recovery after flooding. The model results show that the probability of extinction increases when the dry period is not long enough for individuals to reach reproductive maturity. When this condition is met population extinction is virtually absent resulting from the high lifetime reproductive output of L. rubellus. Parameterization of the model with site-specific data indicate that population survival on the site with the shortest dry period drastically decreases if worms mature at the weight measured at the other sites. The results therefore strongly suggest that the dry period is critical for population recovery in river floodplains and that earthworm populations have adapted to local (site-specific) conditions.

We studied the field response of Robinia pseudoacacia L. to light, total soil nitrogen, available soil phosphorus and soil pH. Results indicated that there was very strong clonal integration between mother and daughter ramets. Mother ramets can provide nitrogen and phosphorus to daughter ramets sufficient for their continued growth through strong clonal integration, but cannot provide enough photosynthate. With clonal integration, soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability had no effect on biomass allocation to roots, number of ramets and length of connection roots. Biomass allocation to roots increased markedly and responded to nitrogen and phosphorus availability, when the connections were severed. Light had a significant effect on the percent of biomass allocation to leaves and number of ramets, but no effect on the length of connection roots. Daughter ramets allocated more resources to leaves, and clones placed more daughter ramets in high light patches than in low light patches. Soil pH had a significant effect on ramet number and connection root length. Clones concentrated in alkaline patches and escaped from acid patches through selective placement of daughter ramets and changing the length of connection roots. We suggest that the clonal integration may be very strong and provide sufficient soil resources to daughter ramets, then affect the daughter ramets' morphology and placement, if the size of a specific ramet is significantly larger than the other ramets in an arbor clone.

Do not be scared away by the cover of this one. Despite classifying it as 'chick-lit', it's definitely not your usual chick-lit, as there's a lot more depth to it than one would usually expect from chick-lit. It's beautiful and devastating. I'd recommend it to everybody, but make sure you have tissues nearby, because even though the book is generally optimistic, there are scenes that will break your heart.

Disappointing.......2007-09-25

I had such high hopes for this book. The basic storyline - an ill husband who'd known he would not live past February and who left his young wife a series of notes for her to read in the months past his death - sounded so promising, especially for a romantic sap like me.

Oh, I liked the first few sentences enough. But from the second page on, reading P.S. I Love You began to get painful - and not because the story was so tender and heart wrenching, but because the writing was so choppy, weak, and poor. It read like my attempts to write weepy love stories in junior high, when I knew not much about love or how to develop a character (or a storyline, for that matter). And while I understand completely that this is, of course, chick lit, and not something from which one should expect too much depth, it is just so far beneath the funny work of talented queens of chick literature (like Sophie Kinsella and Emily Giffin) that it's a shame I can't find my receipt and return this disappointing read.

Here's hoping the movie will be a vast improvement.

My friend recommended that I read this book and she promised that I would laugh and cry at the same time. I have NEVER in my life been able to do that before ~ until this book. This is by far my second favorite secular book ever. It is a must read. You will enjoy it. The author was 22 when she wrote it and I must admit I wish I had her understanding of life at that age.

I have to admit, I am not the biggest fan of this kind of books. However, I was about to go on a beach holiday and my friends recommended this book to me. I got it a day prior to my departure, started already reading it in the subway going home and read through half of the book before my vacation was about to start! The book describes the real love of two persons but opens everyones eyes that live goes on after a sad incident in life and how important your friends are to support. I cried throught the book several times and thought it was a very cute and intelligent (a chick book with a real background not just a simple love story) story to tell.

An all-time favourite.......2006-03-02

This was one of the most treasured books I have ever read. As it was also the very first teenage romance I read (over twenty years ago), the ending of the book was a huge surprise. It is impossible for anyone reading a review to apppreciate how beautiful this book is, you simply HAVE to read it. This book is timeless. I also loved the sequal "Falling in Love Again."

When I was in 9th grade a friend of mine gave me this book, I didn't even ask for it she just said here read this and let me know what you think. So I read it and I laughed, cried, and fell in love with the characters. I live in Orange County Calif. and I could imagine everything they were talking about even Palm Springs. Im 27 now, I must have read that book at least 20 times. Im here on amazon to purchase another because I gave it to another friend years ago and she gave it to anohter and so on. That book takes me to another place and I will always remember how special this book means to me.

A Poignant Book for Teens.......2004-03-18

I first read P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin 11 or 12 years ago when I happened to come across it at a second-hand book sale. Even as an eleven-year-old, I thought the title was corny. Nevertheless, I was drawn to purchasing the book because of the cover photo - a beautiful girl with the straightest brown hair ever and sad soulful eyes.

At the time, I had had no experience of ever falling in love. The most I'd experienced was a few shy crushes, but once I started reading the book, I absolutely fell in love with it. Barbara Conklin did an amazing job of writing from the perspective of a sixteen-year-old, and it is no wonder that this book was a sure hit with its target audience: teenagers.

Teenagers will be able to identify with all that Mariah (the main character) feels. You can relate to the bliss of falling in love, and even though I myself was inexperienced in love, it described first love in the way I imagined it to be - and also turned out to be. Also, when you read about Mariah's insecurities and what Paul Strobe (the heartthrob) will think of her if he finds out she's never had a boyfriend, it will remind you of your own experiences. Perhaps now as an adult, these matters seem trivial, but as a teen, you could totally understand why she panicked and felt the need to "impress" Paul...

I must have read P.S. I Love You more than a dozen times that first summer I had the fortune of finding it. Each time, I never failed to have tears in my eyes. In fact, it doesn't matter how many times you've read it because the ending will always bring you to tears. But don't misunderstand me: this isn't a book filled with misery and by no means is it a tragedy. The realistic side of portraying what it is like to lose love is surely an important life lesson for all teens, and the humorous parts will also bring you much laughter.

After each reading, I always wish that Barbara Conklin could have written a happier ending. After all, we all have a part of us that wishes for the fairy-tale ending of Mariah and Paul living happily ever after! Admittedly, there is a small part in all of us that wishes first love could last forever...

But Barbara Conklin has ended the book as she has for a good reason: she shows us how it is possible to go on even when love has been lost. You will admire Mariah's strength and courage in overcoming her loss and also the poignancy in how she keeps Paul alive in her memories.

P.S. I Love You was the first teen romance I read, and the one that paved the path to reading more. More than a decade after reading teen romances, P.S. I Love You remains the only story I remember. I recommend this book to all teens who are interested in teen romances. One word of advice: don't throw this book away! I did and regretted it terribly! I've just purchased a used copy online again and am infinitely happy to possess it again. When I read the story now as an adult, it seems a little too simple and innocent, but it is definitely a book I would like to pass on to my own daughter in the future, when she herself becomes a teenager.

I read the book when I was 12. I didn't like reading and my 6th grade teacher asked me to read a book, I found P.S. I love You. I fell in love with the book and it brought me into the world of reading. After that book I kept reading book after book but none of those books have staid with me like P.S. I love You has. I am 32 years old and many times through my lifetime I have thought about the book. I have looked everywhere for a copy of the book now that I have a 12 year old. I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.
