        Book Description

This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed over the last two centuries, both by many experimental discoveries and, from the theoretical side, by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in great detail and, in particular, lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions are offered to encourage readers to actively participate in applying and adapting the theory to specific situations.

5 out of 5 stars Taken from ChemPhysChem; October 2003.......2003-12-05

This book not only gives an overview of the basic principles but also reports about novelties in this research area mainly due to the development of new lasers. Despite the fact that there are several other books available dealing with the same subject, this book covers, in some chapters, recent state-of-the-art techniques which can't be found that way in other monographs but have gained in importance in recent years. The book is suited for undergraduate as well as graduate students in physics or chemistry, and for scientists who are planning to become active in this research area. I beleive that this book can provide useful illustrations for instructors in these fields who have to teach the subject to graduate or PhD students. For every reader this book provides a pedagogical approach to this research field which has gained or will still gain more and more importance in the recent or upcoming years, respectively.

                    Book Description

Ultrasonic wave techniques are used increasingly in areas ranging from non-destructive inspection of materials to medical diagnosis. This book brings together basic physics and modern applications. It explains the physical principles of wave propagation and then relates them to ultrasonic wave mechanics and the more recent guided wave techniques that are used to inspect and evaluate aircraft, power plants, and pipelines in chemical processing plants. Among topics covered are wave propagation in plates, rods, hollow cylinders, and multiple layers in solid and composite materials; reflection and refraction; surface and subsurface waves; and horizontal shear wave propagation. Appendices provide background information on ultrasonic non-destructive testing, elasticity theory, and complex variables, and key wave propagation experiments. The text is amplified with numerous examples, laboratory experiments, and homework exercises. Graduate students, researchers, and practising engineers will find Ultrasonic Waves in Solid Media an invaluable reference to this active field.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book of Ultrasonics for NDT.......2004-03-05

Dr. Rose has presented a text for students, engineers and reseachers that covers the wide ranging field of Ultrasonic waves in solid media. While those of us working in the field represent a fairly small set of practioners, anyone doing work in this industry beyond simple UT examination will find this book very helpful. It is most directed towards graduate students and researchers but it has a wealth of information for engineers and practicioners who want a higher level of understanding. You can gain as much as you wish from this book both in terms of mathematical theory as well as practical applied information. My only critique would be that there is a large body of work by Dr. R.B. Thompson regarding ultrasonic lamb waves that did not make it into the reference lists. Overall though, the book should become a standard for those working in this industry. It's list of references is fairly complete and useful.

                      Book Description

A biologist studying patterns of sexual selection, Lucy Stone knows a lot about mating–particularly that in the animal kingdom, males will go to any length to attract females. Why, then, are their human counterparts so hopeless in courtship?

This is the question that Lucy and her best friend, Martha McKenna, struggle to answer. Consider Adam, Lucy’s boyfriend of two years, who demonstrates on an ostensibly romantic camping trip that he can’t build a fire, split wood, or jump-start a car. Worse still, he’s scared to go into the woods after dark. Or take Jesse, Martha’s younger brother, an opera aficionado and neurotic extraordinaire who can’t summon the courage to make the first move on the woman he’s crazy about. And what about the extensive list of men with whom Martha has endured the torments of the first date.

But then there’s Cooper Tuckington, Lucy’s best friend from college. Born and bred on his family’s West Virginia dairy farm, Cooper fits anyone’s description of a man’s man, and yet he is chivalrous and charming. During his annual visit to New York City, he rewires Lucy’s lamps, builds her shelves, and holds forth on subjects from great painters to the great outdoors, all the while pulling out chairs and opening doors for the ladies. Surely, think Martha and Lucy, the men in their lives would benefit from the tutelage of someone who knows how to treat a woman.

Thus, Man Camp is born. With a little feminine persuasion, Lucy and Martha convince Adam, Jesse, and a handful of their other male acquaintances to visit Cooper’s farm, where they will learn everything a guy should know, from cars to carpentry to chivalry–and that’s just the C’s. But life on the farm isn’t exactly as it seems–and the boys soon prove themselves in ways the women would never have imagined. In the process, Lucy and Martha themselves learn a good bit about life and love.

The perfect can’t-put-it-down novel for all of us who’ve needed to bring out the inner man in the men we love, Man Camp is a brilliant, witty, and insightful romp through the wilds of dating and mating.

Readers will be delighted with the authors attempt to bring light to the age-old question of Why do men do the things they do? What the character Martha decides to do is simply educate men on how to treat a lady. The story is somewhat unrealistic since in the real world these attempts would never actually take place.

The novel has its highs and lows and the reader will not dissatisfied with the comic relief displayed throughout the book and that is partially what keeps readers engrossed.

Author Adrienne Brodeur does a magnificent job of bringing humor to the monotonous dating scene and finding that "perfect" mate.

Man Camp is a swift read and readers will definitely be looking forward the author's next fictional literary endeavor. This novel will easily become a favorite amongst the ladies and Man Camp is indeed the perfect recipe for the recently popular "Chick Lit" genre of readers.

                      Job Well done Adrienne Brodeur!!!

                      Recommendation:

                      Buy this book...

                      - If you're looking for a swift read
                      - If you like an author with a sense of humor

I must say that this book not only degraded men, but women, as well. Yuck.

5 out of 5 stars If only it were real!.......2006-07-10

Ms. Brodeur's debut novel - a wonderful hybrid of Chick-Lit, ornithology and sociobiology - is so funny and smart, the only downside is that women all over the land will be saying, "Why can't I send my guy to Man Camp???"

4 out of 5 stars A fun and lighthearted read........2006-07-03

Best friends Lucy Stone and Martha McKenna struggle daily with the dilemma of finding the ideal manly man in a city filled with pampered and egotistical guys. After a long dating dry spell, Martha starts up First Date, a business to help men solve their dating problems. As Martha sets out on many dating adventures both she and Lucy are amazed how successful First Date is when men seem to flock to Martha for her dating advice. But Martha and Lucy soon realize that one date cannot solve the problems of city men and so the idea of Man Camp is born.

Martha and Lucy gain the aid of Cooper, a real man's man who also happens to be Lucy's dear friend from college, to help make Man Camp a reality on Cooper's West Virginia dairy farm. Surprisingly, the girls convince several of the guys to attend Man Camp including Lucy's boyfriend and Martha's brother. At the farm, Martha and Lucy hope that the men will learn how to really treat a woman! But what is even more amazing is the new discoveries about themselves and the guys that they realize during their week at Man Camp.

**** This is a fun and lighthearted story for all the women who have found it challenging to find "real" men to date! Adrienne Brodeur has written a fast-paced book that is hilarious and at the same time very truthful concerning the obstacles faced in modern dating. A quick and enjoyable read! ****

                        Book Description

Set in Germany, Doctor of Darkness revolves around the eventful life of a Nazi doctor named Jan Koch. The story begins dramatically with a Jewish merchant swindling his gullible father. From that time on, Jan lives through a series of painful events that turn him into a monster.

Armed with a new weapon (hate), Jan confronts the people from his past. With the help of his Nazi friends, he punishes them mercilessly. Neverthelass, Jan's hate does not end there. He wants more blood! Consequently, he joins the Buchenwald concentration camp to inflict further suffering on the hapless victims.

Then one day a shocking event enlightens Jan, and makes him question his brutality.

The novel explores the Nazi's deepest scars, his fears, his anger, and his misguided thirst for justice. Furthermore, the novel tries to answer one significant question: Is Jan Koch the victim of the system?

No other novel influenced my "thinking pattern" as much as Doctor of Darkness. Right from the start, this suspense thriller had me on the edge of my seat. It is supposed to be a typical crime novel, but somehow I felt there was something...more to it. The novel had substance; it wasn't some superficial mystery novel but an insightful one. People can enjoy reading it, but they can also benefit from it.

At first, I was reluctant to buy this novel because it seemed to have a Nazi flavor. I don't particularly like Nazi (or any racist) novels, but Doctor of Darkness was utterly different. It has a peculiar quality that you cannot put to words. Let's just say I am now a proud-and happy-owner of this great work.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate page-turner.......2002-02-14

Suresh's debut novel makes you wanna ask for more. The story starts right from the first page without any elaborate introduction. With minimum description (and thank God for that!), he focuses ONLY on the important events and characters. That way, you get to read a gripping thriller without going through all the informative stuff. It is absolutely entertaining, the likes of which one has never read before!

                        5 out of 5 stars Truly amazing.......2002-02-14

Doctor of Darkness has depth and beauty. It is written by, and for, the intelligent thinker. Being an agent, I have read heaps of fine books. But they pale in comparison with this masterpiece. Suresh's portrayal of protagonist Jan Koch is simply superb.
