    Book Description

Ecology of Shallow Lakes brings together current understanding of the mechanisms that drive the diametrically opposite states of water clarity, shown by the cover paintings, found in many shallow lakes and ponds. It gives an outline of the knowledge gained from field observations, experimental work, and restoration studies, linked by a solid theoretical framework.

The book focuses on shallow lakes, but the lucid treatment of plankton dynamics, resuspension, light climate and the role of vegetation is relevant to a much wider range of aquatic systems. The models that are used remain simple and most analyses are graphical rather than algebraic. The text will therefore appeal to students, scientists and policy makers in the field of ecology, fisheries, pollution studies and water management, and also to theoreticans who will benefit from the many real-world examples of topics such as predation and competition theory, bifurcation analysis and catastrophe theory. Perhaps most importantly, the book is a remarkable example of how large field experiments and simple models can catalyze our insight into complex ecosystems.

Marten Scheffer wrote this book while at the Institute of Inland Water Management and Waste Treatment, RIZA, Lelystad, The Netherlands. He is currently at the Department of Water Quality Management and Aquatic Ecology of the Wageningen Agricultural University.

    Reviews
`Much rarer are textbooks that so succinctly sum up the state-of-the-art knowledge about a subject that they become instant `bibles'. This book is one of these. It is probably one of the best biological textbooks I have read. Scheffer masterfully pulls all this information together under one cover and presents a coherent account, which will serve as a benchmark for the subject. The reader will not gain any great insight into the breeding biology of pike from this book, nor learn much about dragonflies or newts. They will, however, come to understand the essential nature of shallow lakes or, as the author puts it, `how shallow lakes work'. Overall, this book will be of great interest to practical and theoretical ecologists, students and managers in all fields of biology. All freshwater ecologists should certainly read it.'
Simon Harrison in Journal of Ecology, 86

`The book by Scheffer can be seen as a milestone in the recognition of shallow lakes as a research topic in its own right. Scheffer uses three approaches concurrently to unravel the functioning of shallow lakes: 1) statistical analysis of large datasets from a variety of lakes; 2) simple abstract models made up of a few non-linear ordinary differential equations, which he calls `mini-models'; and 3) logical reasoning based on a mixture of results from fieldwork, experiments and models. What is new is that Scheffer links mathematics very nicely with what one feels is a correct description of the functioning of a shallow lake. Employing logical reasoning, Scheffer combines all these sources of knowledge into a general, coherent picture of the functioning of a shallow lake.'

      Product Description

Eutrophication and algal blooms are worldwide environmental issues in lakes. The eutrophication process and formation mechanisms of algal blooms are particularly complicated in shallow lakes due to the strong lake land, air water and water sediment interactions. This volume features papers presented at the International Symposium on the Eutrophication Process and Control in Large Shallow Lakes - with Special Reference to Lake Taihu, a Shallow Subtropical Chinese Lake, held in Nanjing, China, 22 26 April, 2005. The topics include: physical processes and their effects on shallow lake ecosystems; biogeochemistry of sediments and nutrient cycling in shallow lakes; algal blooms and ecosystem response in shallow lakes; eutrophication control and restoration in shallow lakes; and resource exploitation, environmental protection and sustainable management in shallow lakes.

This volume will make a significant contribution to the understanding and management of eutrophication in shallow lakes.

          Book Description

The ecology of potamoplankton has received less attention than lake plankton. These proceedings produce a synthesis of the composition, community structure and dynamics of lotic phytoplankton, which are intuitively submitted to a strong physical control in the flowing environment, perceived as much more `disturbed' than a lake, even than a well-mixed shallow one. It turns out that the boundary between the phytoplankton of rivers and lakes is not as clear-cut as was thought. In particular, most contributions provide arguments emphasizing the prominent role of physical control in both aquatic systems, especially due to the steep light gradient resulting from turbulent mixing in a turbid water column. Similarities and differences between potamoplankton and limnoplankton, largely based on the information gathered by the contributors are discussed in the introductory paper by Reynolds et al.

            Book Description

This book contains the proceedings of a two-day symposium held in Amsterdam (18 and 19 April 1991). There are 26 scientific papers divided into three parts. Part One presents the results of a ten-year study carried out by the multi-disciplinary WQL working group (Water Quality research Loosdrecht lakes) on the Loosdrecht lakes.
The central theme of the studies was the quantitative phosphorus flux in the various compartments of the ecosystem (including the food chain), paying special attention to supplementary measures to combat eutrophication. Several papers portray the state of the different aquatic environments, pertaining especially to ecological assessment of their water quality, complex hydrology, and interactions at the sediment-water interface, as well as between phytoplankton, detritus, zooplankton and fish. An overview of the food chain in the Loosdrecht lakes is given, in the light of relationships between the physical-chemical environment on the one hand and between the phytoplankton and zooplankton on the other, using multivariate analysis.
The vast amount of data collected on the structural and functional aspects of the ecosystem enabled a mathematical eutrophication model, with which to simulate additional measures. The logistics employed and the infrastructure developed by the WQL facilitated ground-truth verification of the remote sensing studies. The research studies and conclusions derived from them were critically analyzed from the points of view of the national eutrophication policy and the regional water authority.
A list of WQL publications, the last chapter in Part One, is preceded by a brief synthesis of WQL studies by the editors. Part Two contains more papers with studies carried out on other lake ecosystems. Here the emphasis is a critical analysis of eutrophication. These studies were directed at additional restoration measures, such as flushing, dredging, chemomanipulation and biomanipulation, either in isolation or in combination. In Part Three, the Epilogue, the editors briefly review the causes of water quality deterioration, lake eutrophication and problems of resilience and delay in recovery of these shallow, eutrophic systems in the Netherlands.

              Book Description

Shallow lakes differ from deep ones in many aspects of nutrient dynamics, biotic structure and interactions of various trophic levels. Though very common in European lowlands, shallow lakes attract inadequate attention from research teams. This book aims at filling gaps in our knowledge of the processes which take place in non-stratified lakes. It contains proceedings from the international conference `Shallow Lakes *95' held in Mikolajki, Poland, on 20-26 August 1995. In more than 50 original papers up-to-date views on eutrophication, degradation and recovery of shallow lakes are presented.
The first four sections of the book (Nutrient fluxes, Biotic structure, Trophic interactions and Whole lake studies) deal with theoretical aspects of lake functioning while the fifth (Biomanipulation, restoration and management) is devoted to practical measures undertaken to improve water quality in shallow lakes. The book is therefore addressed to university biologists and ecologists and PhD students, as well as to managers involved in restoration of shallow lakes.

                Book Description

This volume combines articles on shallow lakes from leading European scientists in limnology. It covers aspects of the dynamics of macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthos, nutrient loading, littoral-pelagic interactions, and sediment-water interactions, as well as lake management. The object was not to separate theory (e.g. modelling) and management in order to generate new theories for the understanding of shallow lake ecosystems.
The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the ecology of shallow lakes, a lake type which differs in prominent ways from deeper lakes. The broad spectrum of issues may also reflect the spectrum of interested readers such as limnologists, water engineers, hydrobiologists, who will be informed on a high level about new developments.

                  Product Description

Since the late 1980s, shallow lakes in Europe and North America have been receiving concerted attention from limnologists, fishery biologists and lake managers. These developments relate to deterioration of water quality in the lakes due to pollution and accelerated eutrophication, caused by increased urbanization and agriculture in the lake catchments, overexploitation of fish and higher water level fluctuations. The water-quality and management problems of lakes have led to a greater need for fundamental researches on shallow lakes in order to gain a deeper insight into the structure and functioning of the food web in these waters. New knowledge relating to littoral pelagial interactions and the sediment water interface has facilitated the development of new lake restoration techniques.

This volume, with 41 peer-reviewed papers, comprises the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Shallow Lakes, which was held at Dalfsen, The Netherlands, on 5 9 June 2005. It has the theme Shallow Lakes in a Changing World and deals with water-quality issues, such as changes in lake limnology, especially those driven by eutrophication and pollution, increased nutrient loading and productivity, perennial blooms of cyanobacteria and loss of biodiversity. The general consensus is that the lakes under restoration respond by showing an increase in water clarity followed by an increase in macrophyte coverage and biomass. Consequently, there is now ground for theoretical speculations on the so-called alternate stable states observed in many such lakes under restoration.

                    Book Description

The nutrient dynamics and biological structure of shallow non-stratified lakes differ markedly from that of deep and stratified lakes: for example, the return of nutrients lost through sedimentation is faster and the potential importance of fish and submerged macrophytes as food-web regulators is greater. In addition shallow lakes are more easily influenced by fluctuations in the physical environment caused by wind disturbance, temperature change, etc. Although shallow lakes are often the most common lake type in lowland countries, less attention has been paid to them than to deep stratified lakes and few comparisons have been made between shallow freshwater and brackish lakes.
The volume is divided into five main themes, each introduced by an invited speaker:

                            Book Description

A searing, poignant, darkly comic novel set on Cape Cod by the author of the bestselling true crime story Invisible Eden.

Young Alden Warrens husband has vanished without a trace. Her daily routine--working for the National Park Service at the Cape Cod National Seashore, volunteering to take care of a cantankerous old activist she met through Meals on Wheels, monitoring bird migration counts, and applying for a foster baby--provides many distractions and obstacles, but shes got bigger troubles as Miss Bride Interrupted.

Alden is avidly courted but holds out emotionally--until Lux Davis, a handsome landscape worker and her husbands undetected killer, tracks her down. Lux is smitten with Alden, but his immediate problem, unknown to her, is how to dispose of the body. Lux and Alden bond strongly in the face of their mutual demons, past and current, creating a charged and magical love story. In the meantime, his secret is on the verge of being discovered as the law closes in behind him.

Maria Flook finds valiant people within the working-class population of an off-season resort community. Although unsteady and disenfranchised, her characters emerge intact, buoyed by their love for one another and for the natural world, and portrayed by Flook with her signature mixture of high poetic seriousness and a ribald, picaresque sensibility (The New Yorker).

Maria Flooks Invisible Eden (Broadway, 2003), a literary investigation of fashion writer and single mother Christa Worthingtons unsolved murder on Cape Cod, was a 2003 New York Times bestseller with over 75,000 copies sold.

Maria Flook is the author of My Sister Life: The Story of My Sisters Disappearance (Broadway, 1999), which inspired Annie Proulx to call her one of the most powerful writers at work today.

Maria Flook takes the reader on a trip through the turbulent and dysfunctional life of Alden Warren. Set on the Cape, Lux introduces Alden, an apologetic naturalist, who is slowly growing mad as she deals with the disappearance of her husband and her intense desire for a child and Lux Davis, a local gardener dealing with nightmares from his past, whose revelations may destroy their newfound relationship.

Flook illustrates the underbelly of Cape life through Alden and Lux's romance, which is peppered with bizarre displays of affection on the parts of the lovers and alternating scenes of how the two deal with the other lovers whom they have entertained. The reader learns of Lux's unconventional living arrangements with his sister-in-law and of the intense longings and emptiness that fill Alden's every waking hour.

Unwilling to let go of her husband, yet also unwilling to let opportunity pass her by, Alden's conflicting motives about life, love and children begin to stack into an unstable tower of emotions. The reader follows Alden's journey through her marriage, with revelations that will redeem her...or destroy her.

Intense scenes of almost-discovery and near-confession are insufficient to prepare the reader for what comes next. Lux eventually finds a sort of redemption, while Alden whips herself into a frenzy of misdemeanors, leading to a chilling climax that leaves the reader wanting more.

4 out of 5 stars Flook's brilliant mix of poetry and roguish characters.......2004-10-30

As The National Seashore's bookstore clerk, Alden Warren focuses on stranded sea turtles and other innocents while confronting an ugly past: the disappearance of a philandering husband two years prior. Struggling to remain unaffected, she lusts after a married man while desperately trying to adopt a local foster baby living the neglected life. But everyone in town --- including the social worker she works with to gain the child --- knows Alden's interests are carefully chosen distractions from her husband tragedy. She can't get a break.

Then Alden's diversions give way to a real relationship with offbeat landscaper Lux Davis, whose wild intelligence she finds congenially refreshing. Their intense attraction results in a series of reckless adventures involving dumping deceased animals in the cars of those who malign Alden: the married man who, ultimately, can't take "no" for an answer and the social worker who can't take "yes" (I want this child) for an answer. Unbeknownst to Alden, Lux has his own morbid past surrounding her husband's vanishing.

Lux, or "Light" --- as defined by Alden's best friend, an elderly volunteer named Hyram (another well-chosen diversion) --- is symbolic. Downtrodden with a neurological condition causing him to "freeze," Lux desires Alden because she fulfills his idea of light: love with another misfit who can accept an eccentric disorder. Likewise, he represents her nirvana. The irony is in their romance's backdrop, an unmerciful, stormy ocean environment involving murder. Equally visited by inner demons related to the husband's disappearance and childhood trauma, Lux and Alden identify via inner and outer climates.

It is a rare writer who can mix poetry with roguish characters. Maria Flook does this brilliantly. Her passages, even when describing a dead turtle being belted into a car, remain ethereal. But it is a bestselling writer who accomplishes Flook's evanescence while prioritizing plot. Flook doesn't quite succeed. Many scenarios are dreamlike, diverging from the story.

An exquisite writer, Flook has been commended for her sharp, Woody Allen-like humor: In recalling one scene, a customer-weary Alden gives a new homeowner more information than is bargained for by telling the customer that the area's damp air causes year-round sinus problems. Here's hoping Flook capitalizes more on such funny witticisms!

Alden Warren lives year round in Cape Cod where she works at the National Park Service's Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center. Her mother neglected her as a child while her father spent more time in jail than with his family. Two years ago her husband Monty vanished; everyone assumes he left either to escape Alden or found a new female. His leaving has left his spouse even more imbalanced in terms of relationships except for her birds. Even with her failure with her "loved" ones, she yearns for a child, but unbeknownst to her the state sees her as poor choice.

Alden sees a car accident, rescuing the infant child of local porn star Layla. She dreams of raising the baby who is with the state. Meanwhile landscaper Lux Davis works at fixing the shrubbery damaged by Layla's accident. He desperately wants Alden, but makes no move because he feels guilty. While driving a school bus under the influence, he killed and buried Monty at the sight of the damage shrubbery he is fixing.

Cape Cod in many ways steals the show from a weird relationship drama in which the prime couple is just starting to come together, but ghosts especially Monty stand in their way. The story line hooks the reader mostly because of the scenery, but also whether Lux and Alden can find each other. However, while they struggle, fans will find no one affable to care what happens to them yet they will still enjoy this tale.

I like Martin Millar's novels a lot, and picked up Lux & Alby thinking it was just another one. In fact, it is a 'graphic novel', or basically a long comic.

Several of Millar's characters are brought together in the story, a typical Millar fantasy adventure in a London slum world. The story seems a little bit hollow compared to Millar's full length novel stories, but still has many moments and ideas that appeal.

I'd have rated the book higher if it had just been a very short novella, I think. The graphic novel format does not work well for me. It's not that Simon Fraser's pictures are bad, it's just that I don't like having pictures placed in my mind when I'm reading - I prefer to let my mind conjure up the images itself. I'd rather not have somebody else's idea of what Lux, Alby and Ruby look like in my head. Also, the idea that 'a picture speaks a thousand words' doesn't really apply in the case of fiction, IMO. A lot more can be conveyed through description than by illustration.

I'm sure other people will love Lux & Alby as it is, but for myself I almost wish I hadn't read it. I don't want to have those pictures of the characters in my head next time I read the novels in which they really belong.

There were several things about this book that deserve a mention... The first is the fact that the book's format is very unusual for a comic publication and fits neatly onto my shelf..

The book concentrates on the lives of the major characters (Lux and Alby) and their lives on the dole (social security benefit) in Thatcher's Britain of the 80's.. It will give American readers an insight into a very British political and social humour..

The book has a strong storyline and is beautifully illustrated..

I wouldn't normally presume to give my opinion on other peoples work but I thought that this book was woth the effort.. I hope that other readers enjoy it as much as I did..

                                Description:
One of the major constraints to successful implementation of in situ bioremediation is our lack of understanding of how microbial activity is influenced by the physicochemical conditions in the subsurface environment. Our laboratory has successfully developed a novel fiber optic detection system that employs a lux bioreporter organism to non-invasively monitor real-time, in situ microbial activity in porous media. An evaluation of potential system limitations indicates that the system is not adversely affected by biofilm formation on the optical fiber tips or by bioluminescence attenuation in the porous medium employed. Additionally, the detection system effectively captures the dynamics of in situ bacterial gene expression during naphthalene catabolism under changing physicochemical conditions in saturated porous media. Therefore, this system enables laboratory-based studies of how physicochemical conditions in the subsurface influence microbial activity and will assist in improving: (1) our fundamental understanding of how transformation-related non-ideality, such as non-steady-state microbial activity, affects contaminant transport and fate; and (2) our ability to predict the efficacy of in situ bioremediation in dynamic, heterogeneous subsurface environments.
