Book Description
In this entertaining account of the origins of modern molecular biology, the lives of pioneering scientists in the field of nucleic acid research, and the discovery of DNA, Ulf Lagerkvist speaks not only to scientists but to all students and general readers with an interest in science. The author, whose career in the nucleic acid field began in the late 1940s, recreates historical episodes from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and introduces for a modern audience the scientists whose discoveries revolutionized the field of biology. Knowledge of these pioneers as professionals and as human beings, Lagerkvist believes, may help us see modern problems in a new light and appreciate the greatness of the researchers who contributed to the foundations of molecular biology and biochemistry. Among these scientific pioneers was nineteenth-century biochemist Friedrich Miescher, discoverer of nuclein, the material now known as DNA. The book also explores early research into general problems of the chemistry of biological materials. Lagerkvist vividly describes the research of such influential scientists as Albrecht Kossel, another early leading figure; Emil Fischer, who received the Nobel Prize in 1902 for his work on carbohydrates and purines and was regarded as the foremost chemist of his time; P. A. Levene, known for his discoveries concerning the structure of nucleotides and the way these nucleic acid building blocks are linked to one another; and Oswald T. Avery, often considered the grandfather of molecular genetics.
Customer Reviews:
Overall very good........1999-01-18
I used this book in my Genetics course for a book report for the fall '99 semester. Interestingly, the vast majority of my students found it enjoyable as they could relate to many of the scientists as "human". The females in the class felt the shortcoming of the book was that Mr. Lagerkvist did not address the female influence in the DNA race. They noted that only two women were mentioned, Martha Chase and Rosalind Franklin. In the index, Martha Chase is listed as Margaret Chase. Many felt Rosalind Franklin was belittled in the author's account of the situation. The largest oversight (and I wholeheartedly agree with them) was that Barbara McClintock and Harriet Creighton were not even mentioned. Again, the overall was an enjoyable book, perhaps somewhat biased.

Customer Reviews:
The movie was better, and so was Amanda Brown's other book.......2006-10-14
A huge fan of the Legally Blonde movies and Amanda Brown's other book, Family Trust, reading Legally Blonde the book was a letdown - the characters and the plot seemed much shallower in the book than in the movie.
Terrible Writing!.......2006-04-26
I read this book thinking it would be as cute and funny as the movie, but to be honest, I could barely get through it. The characters are shallow and unbelievable as people, and the dialouge is so fake I cringed at everything the characters said. Some people might like this book because of it's Girl Power message, but I was so distracted by the terrible writing that I couldn't concentrate on the message it was trying to convey.
Thoroughly enjoyable book.......2005-07-29
This is a delightful little book. It's a quick read that's easy to get into and hard to put down. It is funny and cute. The writing style is light and humorous. I have seen the movie and liked it. But, I like the book more. Elle has more depth. She seems smarter and easier to identify with. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure that the plot makes more sense to me in the book. I think the book has more girl-power. But, if anything, I felt the end was a little abrupt. It's just that the climax of the book came so close to the end, I would have liked a bit more winding down. But, overall I felt engroseed and cheered up from this book. I would definitely recommend it.
Still can't get over how bad it was.......2004-10-08
I really liked the movie so I bought the book, figuring I'd like it just as much, if not more. WOW, I could not have been more wrong. The writing in the book was absolutely horrible. After an OK beginning, I thought it could only get better, but it only got worse. Elle stays stupid throughout the book, not passing law school because she buckles down (as in the movie) but because someone else is feeding her the answers. Most of what made the movie good wasn't even in the book - I'm guessing the producers saw what could be a good idea - a girl follows her boyfriend to law school - and really improved on it. I seriously do not understand why there are any good reviews here - my guess is that they know the author. There's no other excuse for it. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT buy this book! The writing is flat and dull and a lifeless plot keeps it flat on the ground.
Its fun to read, has a nice ending, and makes me feel good.......2004-08-31
I had seen part of the movie LEGALLY BLONDE, but not enough to compare it to the book. So I am going with the book, and plan to see the movie again some time. Part of what attracted me to the book was the Chihuahuah on the cover -- I am the Original Dog Lover.
I did not read this book "critically." I read it for fun, entertainment and escape and enjoyed it on all three counts. Elle, the main character, for all of her stylish blondeness, is actually easy to identify with. Even with drop-dead good looks, money and sense of style, she has to deal with the breakup with her boyfriend (no amount of money can make that stop hurting) and challenges in law school, complicated by the fact that since she is attractive, blonde and a former Homecoming Queen, she has people questioning her seriousness and intelligence.
The plot is good and kept me turning pages, even though I had seen the end of the movie and knew how it would turn out. The "heavy" in the book -- Elle's former boyfriend, Warner -- gets his comeuppance and in all, it's a satisfying book to read.
It also pointed out something a lot of people don't realize: just because a girl is interested in styles, clothing and shopping, it doesn't mean that she's an airhead.
I suppose Amanda Brown has a style of writing that could be classed as "better than some and weaker than others." For my part,I think she painted up a real and genuine personality with Elle. There may have been some weaknesses in the book, but to be honest, I wasn't looking for them. I am neither a law student nor a lawyer, but I do have a busy and scattered-out schedule and sometimes I want to read something that is funny and relaxing.
Read the book! You'll enjoy it!

Customer Reviews:
Not Elle Woods as we know her, but enjoyable if you pretend it's not supposed to be her.......2007-04-30
I stumbled upon this book and the idea of it made me smile, so I picked it up. I love the Legally Blonde movies and reading about Elle as a teen seemed fun. Really though, when they do books like this, they should say "loosely based" not "based" on another story. Taking it from that perspective, I enjoyed it. Silly, cute, and over-the-top kind of fun that made for an entertaining, light-hearted read.
This version of Elle is a frumpy sixteen year old. Braces. Glasses that are too big for her face. Mousy hair. Chewed nails. Baggy clothes too. If they were going to start Elle out like this, they should have made her younger than sixteen. It might have fit better then. Might.
Also, they gave her a puppy that's not Bruiser. Unless something tragic happened, this dog would have still be around in her college days. Just saying...
What I did like about this book was Elle's directness in deciding what she wanted and going full on with a path to get it. Nothing is impossible for her if she puts her mind to it and takes help from what might at first seem like unlikely sources. She also has a good heart, not to mention a love for pretty things. And all that right there is why I love the character Elle Woods so very much!
Ignore the Movies, Enjoy the Book.......2006-06-27
From reading the first three sentences of this book, you know this is not the Elle we have come to know and love. This book is about a girl attending Bverly Hills High with no sense of fashion. She falls for the captain of the school's basketball team, and suddenly transforms the whole school, starting with the cheerleaders, and working her way through the student body. Some of the things Elle does in this book would not be possible in a real live high school, but it also does deal with some real high school issues. The plot moves along quickly and smoothly, leaving you clued in at every point. Some foreshadowing is attempted, but is easy to figure out, along with the rest of the plot.
Cute, Lacks the Substance of the Original Blonde.......2006-05-24
This book is supposed to be a prequel of what happenned to Elle Woods in high school before the events in the Legally Blonde films. In the book, Elle is a girl with mousy hair and no style who undergoes a makeover.
The "Elle" in the novel acts nothing like her film counterpart. It's difficult to place this on the same level as the film and the original novel, there is nothing the same about the two at all. Reading this book (Blonde at Heart), I cannot envision the Elle from the Blonde at Heart book being the same person in either the films or the novel by Amanda Brown. If you're a fan of the Legally Blonde films and/or the novel by Brown, skip this book, they are nothing alike. If you're not, you might be able to enjoy it as a new series about a blonde girl who develops a sense of style and has "problems" that don't exist in high school.
Blonde at Heart may say "Elle Woods" on the cover, but it is not the Elle fans have known and loved in the films.

Book Description
Its summer in California, and Elle is spending her days at the beach with Hunter, learning to surf (and perfecting her blond highlights.) With everything going so well, Elle is surprised when she discovers that life at the beach isnt as perfect as it seems. Someone is polluting the water and hurting the seals that live there. The animal-loving Elle knows she has to do something. With some sly manicure maneuvers, Elle devises a plan to save the seals and prove that there is more to beach blondes than people think.

A Good Read.......2007-05-30
Elle Woods: Beach Blonde
Recommended for ages 9-13/ grades 4- 8
By: Natalie Standiford
Elle Woods: Beach Blonde is a very intriguing book because it is full of mystery. The book is about a girl named Elle Woods (based on the character of Legally Blonde), Laurette and a girl named Nica. The book is set at Seal Beach in California.
The story takes place in the summer, and Elle is learning how to surf. Elle is having such a great summer, but when she goes to a bonfire with her friends, she notices that all the seals that were originally on the beach have disappeared. Since Elle is an animal lover, she worries about the seals. She wants them to be back safe, but she doesn't know how she can do it.
Elle's character changes because in the beginning, she is a blonde who only cares about getting a suntan. But as the book goes on, she starts to care about people (and animals) other than herself.
I'd suggest this book to girls from 4th grade- 8th grade because even though it is a good book, adults might not enjoy the book as much as kids. Overall, this is a great, 5-star book
