5 out of 5 stars Mosaic has never looked so fabulously trendy !.......1999-01-20

Any one with an eye for detail & a creative bone in their body will love this. Much more contempory & fun than the more 'crafty' selection of mosaic making books on the market. Whilst retaining the traditonal format of 'introduction - gallery - techniques - projects - useful addresses, etc' the projects are far from traditional in style if not in technique. This will probably appeal to the more style conscious person because the ideas in the book are more fitting in a modern setting but the principles in making decorative mosaic objects for the home are obviously traditional & well presented. The book has a 'clean' feel to it but I hope that anyone buying it will not stay clean for long as they cover themselves in glue, grout & bits of glass & ceramic (not literally, of course!) This will appeal to anyone who wants to try out a new & rewarding craft but is afraid of that word -"CRAFT" aghhh! This is so stylish you'll be staying in on Saturday night to make a mirror ! I might buy another copy to keep one clean ! Mosaic doesn't have to be folky, religious or in the swimming pool... It is THE up & coming decorative art & these boys have made it their own. Why not have a go ?

4 out of 5 stars A good design and how-to book, but not a "sourcebook"........1998-07-25

This is a good book of inspirations and instructions for mosaic vases, tables, mirrors, and pots. There are lots of illustrations and patterns. However, the title is misleading; there are only a few sources listed, none of which have web site info, toll-free numbers, or a description of what they supply.

    4 out of 5 stars very inspirational.......1999-12-15

This book (along with Locktov/Clagett's "The Art of Mosaic Design") is a very fine book to inspire those who make mosaics and those who appreciate them (the mosaics, that is... not the mosaicists -- particularly). Neither are books for the beginner as far as making the projects, but the mosaics can allow you to see what is possible. There is an emphasis on Martin Cheek's own work, that's true, but hey... he's pretty darn good.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......1999-10-27

    Great photos of great mosaics.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......1998-11-02

This is a great book if you're looking for ideas or wondering how to handle a particular subject. It's divided into sections by subject matter, such as Still Life, Birds, Animals and The Human World. One page (for example) shows 3 elephant mosaics done by different artists, and explains how different techniques and styles produce a completely different end result.

The author's work predominates but there are a substantial number of other artists too. At the end of the book is a directory of the artists and their contact details. They're predominantly British, although there are a few Americans too.

What this book *doesn't* have is DIY projects and in-depth explanations of techniques/tools/materials.

If you buy it for the right reason - inspiration rather than instruction - you should be very happy with it!

Famous for his dreamy 1960s paintings of cakes, Wayne Thiebaud began his career as a commercial artist and cartoon illustrator like many other artists of the period, including Andy Warhol. And like Warhol, Thiebaud became tied to pop art since he was making images of popular American products like food, lipsticks, and toys. Yet unlike many of his pop peers, Bay Area-based Thiebaud wasn't interested in poking fun at the establishment. He's a painter's painter, a real traditionalist. Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective covers a career of rendering still lifes, cityscapes, landscapes, and the figure. His cake paintings are formally beautiful in their color, shadow, and composition. They are perfect specimens of the good life in America, the paint lovingly applied in places like thick frosting. His cityscapes of San Francisco fiercely exaggerate the hilly landscape, capturing a perspective from the ground and air simultaneously while utilizing the light that the Bay Area is famous for.

Thoughtful essays by Steven A. Nash, associate director and chief curator for the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, and Adam Gopnik, a writer for The New Yorker, discuss Thiebaud in relation to his peers, pop, modernism, and abstract expressionism. This book serves as a catalog for Thiebaud's major retrospective, which opened in San Francisco and travels to Forth Worth, Texas, Washington, D.C., and ends in New York in the fall of 2001. Besides their beauty, these works truly capture a period of American life in a way that feels free of irony but not without commentary about nature, the city, and how we've lived. --J.P. Cohen

          Book Description

Wayne Thiebaud, the California-based painter, has produced works of complexity and distinction that appear deceptively simple in terms of subject matter and in their presentation yet draw on many historical sources. In fact, Thiebaud is part of the grand tradition of representational art from Chardin and Manet to the American Realist masters such as Eakins and Hopper. Best-known for his deadpan still-life paintings of cakes, pies, delicatessen counters, and other consumer goods, Thiebaud has also explored such themes as figure studies, the topography of Northern California, and cityscapes exaggerating the vertiginous roadways and geometric high-rises of San Francisco. Continuous throughout his career is his combination of the perceptual and the conceptual, of sensuous color, light, and painterly texture with rigorously formal composition, resulting in a highly personalized Americana. Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective is published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same title, the first major survey in fifteen years of work by this famous American figurative artist. Steven A. Nash, Associate Director and Chief Curator at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, has organized the exhibition and provides a biographical essay on Thiebaud. An extended essay by Adam Gopnik, the Paris Journal writer for The New Yorker, links Thiebaud to American writing as a painter in the tradition of Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, and John Updike.

3 out of 5 stars A great artist whose paintings lose a lot through reproduction.......2007-04-09

As far as I know, this is the only available publication on Thiebaud, so better get it while it is still available. However, what makes Thiebaud's paintings striking is their thickness, the way the artist works through the layers of paint, what we call in French "la matière". It is not only the color, which of course is present in the reproductions that fill this book. Unfortunately, that is somewhat lost and therefore I was a bit disappointed when I opened this catalogue for the recent retro on Wayne Thiebaud. The reproductions should have shown more close-ups and details of the works. For this particular artist, something is lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection of Works.......2006-03-15

I had ordered this book to share it with my adult painting students in a class I teach. It was to inspire a lesson about painting pictures of pastries. What I found was so much more. The book provides an informative overview of a variety of types of work by this artist, both realist and pop artist, with fine quality reproductions of the art work.

          5 out of 5 stars America's Painterly Realist.......2005-05-14

This is the definitive book on the works of Wayne Thiebaud, which accompanied the very successful exhibition at the Whitney Museum. Thiebaud is best known for his hyper-realistic paintings of food, so luscious and sensual that they have universal appeal. When Theibaud first started painting in this style, he was compared to the Pop Artists, such as Warhol, Wesselmann, Indiana and Ramos. However, Thiebaud always tried to set himself apart from these artists, because although he agreed with their use of repetitive images as a comment on the banality of American consumerism, he wanted to paint well and believed that a series of soup cans painted poorly did not reflect his goal as an artist. It took many years after the Pop Artists became famous for Thiebaud to achieve the recognition that he deserved, partly because he was considered a regional artist who painted in California. This book is the seminal treatise on the works of Thiebaud and is therefore a must read.

5 out of 5 stars 'What is America To Me?".......2004-10-31

Remember that old Frank Sinatra song that served as an inspirational film for rainy day grade school entertainment in the 50's? Well, if there is an artist who has captured the imagination and dreamy reveries of life in the past century, the quieter, more ebulliently committed time to joy and the simple treasures here, that man is Wayne Thiebaud. WAYNE THIEBAUD: A PAINTINGS RETROSPECTIVE is a beautifully designed catalogue raisonne of the pop artist's oeuvre that toured the country a few years ago. Organized by curator Steven A. Nash of San Francisco (the artist's home) this book is beautifully illustrated with all of the iconic images of pies, cakes, candy apples, etc. that everyone associates with Thiebaud. Yet it gives equal time to the inimitable 'landscapes' of the hilly terrain that is San Francisco, valleys of Northern California, and beaches. Thiebaud's ability to flatten vistas into geometric patterns can be compared to Richard Diebenkorn's purely abstract Ocean Park Series of paintings: both artists understand space, color, and the excitement of the line.

Accompanying this 'delicious' array of Thiebaud paintings are essays by both Nash and by Adam Gopnik of 'New Yorker' who aptly praises Thiebaud as a man in the same company of Americana as Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, and John Updike! That about sums it all up and this essay alone would be reason enough to buy this important volume of American art history. Simply superb. Grady Harp, October, 2004

5 out of 5 stars One of Thiebaud's More Interesting Monographs.......2006-02-16

Wayne Thiebaud is best known for his paintings of edible delicacies and bizarre San Francisco landscapes and while his paintings of these subjects are difficult to find except in museums, Thiebaud spent considerable time at Crown Point Press in San Francisco creating etchings of the same concepts. Some of his fine art prints are pulled in multiple colors, but Thiebaud, being the creative mind he is, also complemented these with hand coloring the black and white artist proofs.

The results are then unique pieces, as each matrix of an image is enhanced by the artist with crayon, pastel, watercolor, charcoal, tempera, acrylic and oil blend with the printer's inks. These uniques are termed 'familial resemblances to the parent print' by the artist and this fine book offers a wide range of the results: cakes, candy apples, fruits, people, cityscapes, landscapes - some seventy odd images in all.

The monograph is accompanied by interesting essays including one by Robert Flynn Johnson - 'Illuminated Impressions: A Brief History of the Hand Colored Print' - which adds immensely to the appreciation for Thiebaud's art. There are a few of these books still available and the quality of the book whether in hard or soft back is so fine that this viewer would recommend your seeking a source. It is a delightful art book. Book Description

Cupcakes, chocolate bars, truffles, candied fruit, apple pies, ice cream sundaes. . . America has a passion for edible sweets, a fact that has informed not only food manufacturers, the Food and Drug Administration, health care professionals, and restaurateurs, but also many generations of artists. In Sweet Tooth, 40 artists, including Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Claes Oldenburg, Vik Muniz, Laurie Simmons, Shimon Attie, Enrique Chagoya, Jana Sterbak, and Andy Warhol, explore the visual landscape of the dessert, while at the same time confronting such complex issues as body image, feminism, gender issues, and illness. One hundred works in a variety of media, ranging from the 1970s through the present, offer variations on the still life, meditations on the perishable, thoughts on sweet symbolism, and an always welcome sugar fix.

                    Book Description

One of the giants of American art, Wayne Thiebaud was at first unappreciated because of the everyday subject matter of his paintings. His tasty hot dogs, delectable cakes, dizzy streets, and sleepy deltas have since become icons of twentieth century art. Now young readers have the chance to explore the development of a fascinating artist while delighting in the very child-friendly art that has made him so acclaimed. With her deft touch, critically-acclaimed non-fiction author Susan Rubin tells the story of the man behind the masterpieces.
