Bite Size Facts from Guatemala.......2007-10-07
My three year old daughter, adopted from Guatemala, loved this book. It offers bite size pieces of information about the country in a fun way. She even brought it to her preschool on her show and tell day.
We love it for our 3yo and 8yo.......2007-02-26
The pictures really tell the story of Guatemala - the fast facts you think of first when thinking about Guatemala. We think its perfect for the younger age group, but it would also work with children a bit older. Our 3yo who was recently adopted from Guatemala loves this book along with the Guatemala Q&A book. They go well together. Our 8 yo loves to read this book to her sister. So, they both learn and remember Guatemala.
Good, but not what I expected........2007-01-12
From the title and cover of this book, one might think the book is for kids 2-7, but it's actually aimed at older kids. Other than that, the book is still satisfying, delivering fun, fast facts in an easily digestible format. Very informative.
The beauty is in the pictures and passages........2007-01-04
I absolutely think you should have this book as part of your collection. The pictures come to life along with the description. The wording is simple and sweet. I am a first grade teacher and taught using this book. All my students enjoyed the memory this book brings to life. Vivid pictures and colors are an absolute gift from the artist.
Nicely done, not spectacular.......2006-10-14
Colorful book with some interesting information about Guatemala. This is an intermediate book, not really for older readers and not an "ABC" book that you would show a toddler. I plan to show it to my youngest when he is 4 or so. The drawing are good but not great.
The information is a bit superficial and the "Fast facts" are an odd addition. The "fast fact" info should just be part of the text; I don't know why they are "fast".
Book Description
What is the relationship of the Bible to Witchcraft? What are Fairies, and Magical Alphabets? What were the links between Druidism and Witchcraft? An ABC of Witchcraft covers these subjects and many more from the well-informed and gentle viewpoint of practicing witch, Doreen Valiente.
Arranged in alphabetical order for easy reference, the book discusses over 125 subjects that may concern anyone wishing to know more about this ancient pagan religion. Other topics include Atlantis, Witches' Familiars, Dancing, Fire Magic, Flying Ointments, Horses and Witchcraft, Initiations, Love Charms, Royalty and its connection with witchcraft, etc., etc., with up to several pages on each subject.

Classical Analyse on Modern Witchcraft for Serious Wiccans.......2007-09-13
Madame Doreen Valiente has written an excellent Witchcraft text that has stood the sands of the hour-glass.She offers a critical review of all the major famous people associated with classical and modern witchcraft. It's omnificent story-telling without any fluffy piffling tales presented. It's serious reading for any neo-pagan,who wants to expand one's Craft knowledge. From that of a mere novice to a higher level of a trusted Occult scholar. This book has more persuasive and insightful opinions on the British Witchcraft-Gardnerian traditions and customs, than any other recent English Craftbook. So i can only recommend this classical work on historical and near present British Magick.I have the original edition, with the moon priestess, around the witching midnight hour. The newer copies offer a sky-clad witch, that may turn some serious wiccans, widdershins away from it.This book is not a 'pig in the poke',short-changing the true followers of Wicca.Read the book and judge for yourself. You will not be disappointed. Also check out www.highcrossquarter.com for current information about today's British witches & wizards.
A must read for all Witches and Wiccans!.......2007-09-01
I'm always suprised when I see really great books on the Craft have few reviews compared to a lot of the "junk food" type stuff that is constantly published today. This isn't a how to book for beginners, but a great history that's set up in a dictionary type way. There's so much info and so much to learn here. This isn't just a book for practicing Witches, but for anyone interested in witchcraft. I could see this book being a great resource for anyone doing a paper on witchcraft. It can be a little dry in some spots, but not very many!
Good Encyclopedia on Witchcraft.......2007-08-22
This is a great little encyclopedia on witchcraft and occult topics that relate to the pratice of both witchcraft and also Wicca. If you are looking for a good book to help expand your magical vocabulary or a great book that will help you become a more well-rounded witch, this is the book for you..... What I recommend is that you get the book and you start reading the information presented here-in. Then if you are looking for more information or updated books about any articles what you see, come online and see if you can find any specific books relating to the topics presented or look around on the web. It is easy to read and Doreen keeps your interest peeled!
Any books by this author is highly recommened!
Much Love & Many Blessings,
Thorn Nightwind
Couldn't put it down.......2006-11-12
This book was so full of information from the very first page, I just couldn't put it down.It was certainly a important addition to my Wiccan library. If you want to find out what, where, and why ,this book will give you all of that .I have been a student of Wicca since I was thirteen ,and am now forty-eight ,having this book all those years ago would have definately been a blessing.
The Old Ways.......2006-08-19
Doreen Valiente was always interested in the truely old craft. Here she gives us interesting factiods on various topics. Most concern pre-revival traditions like the witch balls, holed stones, flying ointments and the like. Also matters of historical importance like the minibiographies of the revivalists (Garder, Crowley, etc.), laws against witchcraft and some of the more famous witch trials. Several important dieties and holidays are also covered. And of course, the witches' tools. The articles are mostly 2 - 5 pages in length, so they depth as well as breadth.
Far more than an alphabetical reference book An ABC of Witchcraft takes you in and gives even an experienced witch food for thought. I highly recommend.
Customer Reviews:

It is an informative and imaginative alphabet book on dino's.......1999-04-30
Although the book hasn't any text and sometimes it is difficult to tell which name goes with which creature I like this book. My son doesn't use it for learning the alphabet , but rather for the dinosaurs in the book. I like how the illustrator used bright colors when drawing the dinosaurs. It lets kids imagine that maybe the dinosaurs weren't browns and greens. The moveable parts had both my children wanting this book to be read again and again.

ABC's for your favorite oceanographer!.......2004-02-28
As an instructor of introductory oceanography, and a collector of children's ABC books, I whole heartedly endorse Asimov's ABC's of the Ocean. The terms used are (mostly) terms that are relevant to oceanography.
However, there are two things to consider. First, this is an older book, and does appear dated in layout. Secondly, it is not a book from which a child should initially learn their alphabet. Rather, it is an introduction to the science of the sea for young readers, a fantastic gift for an aspiring marine scientist or a unique addition to someone's Asimov collection.

Book Description
This book gives a complete overview of the properties of deep-level, localized defects in semiconductors. Such comparatively long-lived (or metastable) defects exhibit complex interactions with the surrounding material, and can significantly affect the performance and stability of certain semiconductor devices. After an introductory discussion of metastable defects, the authors present properties of DX and EL2 centers in IIISHV compounds. They also deal with additional crystalline materials before giving a detailed description of the properties and kinetics of photo-induced defects in amorphous semiconductors. The book closes with an examination of the effects of photo-induced defects in a range of practical applications. The book will be of great use to graduate students and researchers interested in the physics and materials science of semiconductors.
Customer Reviews:
The book is a survey of a large number of PI defects.......1999-08-12
A large number of photoinduced phenomena associated with the photoinduced (PI) defects creation have been reported in the past. Besides the fundamental interest, these phenomena are practically important due to their influence on the performance and stability of semiconductor devices such as solar cells and laser diodes. The book by Redfield and Bube gives a comprehensive review of the subject. To my opinion the authors review the most important PI defects in crystalline and amorphous semiconductors focusing on the existing models without mathematical complications and emphasizing the need for more sophisticated many electron models.
The authors start with a review of the basic definitions and terminology of metastable defects. Some of the concepts in this chapter were discussed too shortly and it would be much more efficient if more details were given in particular to the audience of new comers to the field and for graduate students. Chapters 2 and 3 deal with defects in crystalline semiconductors with particular attention to DX and EL2 centers in III-V compounds. The bulk of these chapters is devoted mainly to PI defects as observed with electrical properties such as photoconductivity, resistivity and Hall mobility. Photoinduced changes in the optical properties of crystalline semiconductors associated with the defects creation are numerous, but they were ignored in these chapters and the topic is actually missing. A detailed review of the properties of photoinduced defects in hydrogenated amorphous silicon and their kinetics is given in chapters 4 and 5. These two chapters are well organized and informative. In chapter 6, a summary of PI defects in other amorphous semiconductors are summarized. In certain cases such as chalcogenide glasses, this summary is too short when compared to the amount of work done on PI defects in these materials. The last chapter summarizes the effect of PI defects in devices. This chapter is well written and provides a reasonable summary of the main effects, although the book is oriented more to the material aspects than to devices.
In summary the book is a survey of a large number of PI defects in semiconductors. The subject matter is generally well-organized, although many topics were mentioned too briefly and some significant information has been ignored. The amount of references is reasonable, however it is far from being complete and the book has an index. In my opinion the book can be invaluable as an introduction for those who are new to the field and for graduate students.

Mythical Madness.......2007-07-12
With the popularity of "Shrek" and "Harry Potter" I'm a bit surprised this hasn't had more of a resurgence. I read this series years ago and have wondered since why they weren't made into a series of movies. "Shrek" is along the same lines but not quite the same as the stories by Robert Asprin. If you want a good laugh be sure to read them. Full of puns, they center around an apprentice wizard named Skeeve and a large lizard like demon named Aahz from Pervect. Aahz takes upon the responsibility of training Skeeve when the master wizard that summoned him dies. They have some wonderfully funny adventures and meet all types of interesting characters. They live in a land of mythical humanoids and creatures. Great for all ages. These are two of the most entertaining books I have ever read.
One of my favorite lighthearted fantasy series.......2007-07-12
Perhaps one of the best fantasy series I have read(although there are a few bumps in the road of course), the Myth stories are much different than your standard epic fantasy novels.
Lighthearted and hilarious, Robert Asprin blends in his own humour into the entertaining narration and plot, but most of the humour stems out from his extremely loveable characters. By all standards, this is a great series, and one you surely do not want to miss.
I couldn't love this book anymore.......2007-07-07
One of the things that most interests me in novels are the characters. If the characters arent dynamic, interesting, and unique, I can't read the book.
Perhaps thats why I love comedy so much, and can hardly stand things like horrors.
The reason I am saying this is because the cast of characters in all of Robert Asprin's books are all of those things, plus they are loveable, flamboyant, and hilarious.
The plot line in his books are interesting yet hilarious, and its hard to read this book without bursting out laughing many times through.
Indeed, after reading through this series at least 10 times, whenever I read these books, my lowest reaction is a huge grin.
So buy this book and enjoy. You will love it as much as I do.
Wonderful!.......2006-01-05
Another Fine Myth/Myth Conceptions was a real joy to read. The story starts with a young would-be-thief who has changed professions to become a wizard apprentice. However, as he is being taught one day, his master is killed by assassins, at the exact moment when he was summoning a demon from another world. Fortunately for Skeeve the apprentice, the demon was spelled, and is powerless to use his magic. Unfortunately, the demon is a good creature and wants to continue to teach Skeeve magic so they can get to the bottom of the mystery, and the Demon may someday be able to return home.
The story is a great little tale, with countless subtle jokes and references that only a sharp reader can catch. As the two travel the lands seeking clues, they encounter all sorts of strange people, including inept demon hunting templar, ruthless merchants from other dimensions, and a beautiful girl who also happens to have a mysterious background. The end of the second book has Skeeve and his strange allies setting up to battle a much larger army, and its a fight you dont want to miss!
This is an easy read, and will create a more than rewarding few hours.
If you do buy this book, make sure you get the "double volume" and not just the first book. Also, there are about 10 sequels that you can expect to buy, as this series is just that good, and that's no myth.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-04
Kid has to deal with devious demons, wenches and wizards.
An apprentice that wants to learn the magic thing finds the going a bit on the slow side, as all that other life stuff actually has to happen, as well. Plenty of amusing magical and other demonic hijinks ensure along the way for young Skeeve.
4-1/2 Stars. This is too much fun! .......2006-01-15
Fantasy fiction is not even close to being my favorite genre. I usually find it dry, humorless, and often too character-complicated to easily enjoy. Another Fine Myth is NOT that dry, humorless, complicated stuff!
The writing here reminds me of those old Looney Tunes cartoons: funny antics aplenty for the younger set, but with those underlying more-adult themes to solidly entertain the parents.
I originally read the first few Myth books nearly 20 years ago and lost track of the series. Sadly, even my well-stocked local public library has (to this day) never heard of Robert Asprin! Thank goodness for Amazon and Borders...now I'll be able to finish what I started so long ago.
Nothing heavy-duty here. Good Magik and good fun for boys and girls of all ages!
A quick, easy and fun read.......2005-06-19
This is my second time reading Another Fine Myth and it was just as good as the first time. I still laughed, but not quite as much. However, I did notice more of the humor this time around.
The Myth series is a breathe of fresh air in the fantasy genre, even if it is over 20 years old. Asprin writes witty dialogue with a cast of characters you can't help but feel a part of.
Skeeve is an apprentice magician and his master is murdered. Aahz is a magician from another dimension that has lost his powers. The two work together to find the man that hired the assassin and seek revenge. Along the way Murphy's Law seems to be the only constant. This is the first in a long line of fun and interesting adventures for the two. It's not necessary to read them in order, but this one will give you some background info. I highly recommend this series if you are looking for laughs and a good fantasy adventure.
Don't buy this book!, at lest not this version., .......2005-05-14
New editions available on Amazon and at most book stores. Instead of one book for $6.99, two consecutive book are included in each volume for $7.99. These are available for all of the books except the two newest (of course they were the only in the series I had to buy). But I figured the rest of you may as well not repeat my purchasing mistake.
You or your child will be happy with this book.......2004-12-09
Another Fine Myth is a fun book to read for your child. If you have someone in your life that is about at the age where they might pick up Harry Potter or if they are looking for something akin to it, this is a good direction to turn. I feel that Asprin modeled these books on the old Hope and Crosby `Road' flicks. The banter between Skeeve and Aahz (the two main characters) is quite enjoyable. The worlds that Asprin creates are also very imaginative and fun to encounter.
This is quite an engrossing book and wont tire you no matter what your age as long as you have a sense of humor and a bit of wonder left in your heart.
Other series' in line with this would be the `Stainless Steel Rat' by Harry Harrison, and the `Xanth series' by Piers Anthony
