Mostly reprints of old articles.......2004-05-27

Many articles in this 2. edition are just reprints of articles from the 1 edition. It is a real problem that the articles are not dated or have otherwise been indicated whether they are new in this edition (from 2003) or have just been reprinted without updating from the first edition which was published in 73 volumes from 1968 until 2003. (Vol 1-33 A-Z; Vol. 34+35 = Index; Vol 36-73 = supplements)

For example, the article "Philosophy of Science" was pubished in 1977. It is reprinted in the 2nd edition without any changes in content (only typographical changes such as two columns). In the 2nd edition we are misinformed that this entry is "Print Published: 05/20/2003 | Online Published: 06/23/2003". The readers are thus misled concerning what they are reading. This is tru for many articles, I guess much more than 50%.

The only way you can tell whether the article is revised or updated is by looking at the references and see if new references are included - in most cases they are not (alternatively, of course compare the articles in the two editions page by page).

Both the first edition and the second edition have a heavy emphazis on specific libraries in specific countries and is weak in theoretical and conceptual issues.

When this is said, it should be said that there are many important articles in this work and it is an obvious advantage that it is available online and the papers available as pdf-files. I have now read usefull articles that I would not have read if I had to make paper copies from the old edition.

Nonlinear Interactions provides a coherent and unified treatment of analytical, computational, and experimental methods and concepts of modal interactions. This book is an obvious extension of Ali Nayfeh's well-known book Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (with Bala Balachandran). These methods are used to explore and unfold in a unified manner the fascinating complexities in nonlinear dynamical systems. The systems discussed are drawn from fluid mechanics and structural dynamics.

Nonlinear interactions between high-frequency and low-frequency modes are of great practical importance. Through the mechanisms discussed in this book, energy from high-frequency sources can be transferred to the low-frequency modes of supporting structures and foundations, and the result can be harmful large-amplitude oscillations that decrease their fatigue lives. On the other hand, these mechanisms can be exploited to transfer the energy from a system to a sacrificial subsystem and hence decrease considerably the vibrations of the main system and increase its fatigue life.

Book Description

This is the first book to present a coherent theoretical and experimental treatment of the rapidly developing field of macroscopic quantum tunneling of the magnetic moment. The theory is based on the concept of the magnetic instanton and its renormalization by the dissipative environment. The book includes discussions of the tunneling of magnetic moment in small ferromagnetic grains, tunneling of the Ne'el vector in antiferromagnetic grains, quantum nucleation of magnetic domains, and quantum depinning of domain walls. The experimental part collects the majority of recent data that are, or may be, relevant to spin tunneling. Among the topics described are low temperature magnetic relaxation and its interpretation in various systems, experiments on single particles and mesoscopic wires, and resonant spin tunneling in molecular magnets. This study of an important new field in condensed matter physics by two leading contributors to the subject will be of interest to theorists and experimentalists.

Disappointing.......2007-07-06

I have read most of Rankin's stuff and have usually really enjoyed it. He missed the mark on this one. It isn't particularly funny. It is disjointed. It repeats itself constantly, and just isn't very interesting. It might be a bit more interesting if you are familiar with town he sets this in, but just a bit. They can't all be winners. Try something else by him instead. His Brentford stuff, and Bunny stuff are far better choices.
