    Book Description

Deep and detailed discussions on chemistry, chemical physics, photoelectrochemistry, photophysics, photocatalysis and possible applications of nanostructured semiconductor materials have shown increasing interest in the matter by scientists representing various research areas as well as industrial enterprises. Indeed, solar energy conversion and chemical methods for its realization became very popular again after the ``great jump'' of renewable energy sources between the middle of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s. Several excellent books have been published over the past years, however, in these books no attempt was made to approach this research area from the point of view of classical chemical physics.

With this book, the editors aim: a) to generate an adequate scope of the modern trends and data obtained during the last years in the area of chemical physics of nanostructured materials, in particular, nanocrystalline semiconductors; b) to select an equal mix of scientists from Western and Eastern countries, all of them experts in their respective research areas; and c) to present to the international scientific community many interesting and important results which have been obtained by former Soviet Union researchers, but are not well known because they had originally been published in Russian books and journals. This book will be interesting and useful for scientists working in the area of semiconductor nanotechnology, photoelectrochemistry, photocatalysis, photochemistry of water and air purification, as well as for graduate and post-graduate students who are planning to join these research areas.

      Book Description

The ICAM'97 symposium on "Recent Developments in Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Diffraction of Thin Film Structures" was presented at the combined 1997 International Conference on Applied Materials/European Materials Research Society Spring meeting (ICAM'97/E-MRS'97) held in Strasbourg (France) from 16-20 June 1997. . More than 60 participants representing 10 countries met to discuss the recent developments related to the study of crystalline structure of thin films: first stages of growth, morphology, strains and their relaxation. The aim of this symposium was to discuss the applications of both electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction in thin film studies.

X-ray diffraction is a non-destructive method giving very accurate information in reciprocal space for the determination of crystalline data. Many of the contributions were concerned with following such growth processes such as epitaxy of metals and semiconducting materials, measuring the average strain and the structure and the morphology of the films.

The electron microscopy investigations allow the study of microstructures and crystalline defects. The main handicap is the necessity for the destruction of the specimens. Electron microscopy is useful for studying the randomly distributed failures in periodicity of crystalline structures.

        Book Description

Synoptic meteorology, the study of large-scale weather systems and forecasting using observation, and dynamic meteorology, the study of the laws of physics involved in air movement, are treated in this major new text in two volumes. The author, a meteorologist noted for his research on tornadoes and severe storms, based his work on material he has taught for the past 14 years at the University of Oklahoma. There are no modern texts on the topic. Volume II covers the formation, motion and climatology of extratropical weather systems in the context of the quasigeostrophic theory and "IPV" thinking, the formation and structure of fronts and jets, applications of semigeostrophic theory, and the observed structure and dynamics of precipitation systems in midlatitudes.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars thorough coverage of synoptic meteorology.......2002-09-03

Bluestein's second volume is much more qualitative than the first; instead of dozens of derivations, he gives the reader a solid discussion of cyclones, applications of QG theory, fronts, jets, and then severe weather.

If you are new to meteorology, you'll still need a strong mathmematical background to follow Bluestein's text. The book is written at the academic level...I believe that it is best suited as a reference for those with prior courses in meteorology.

There are not many review problems at the end of any of the three chapters; this is disappointing, as there could easily be dozens (or more!) per section. Still, Bluestein's two-volume series is a must-have for all serious meteorologists.

5 out of 5 stars Well written college Text.......2002-05-16

This is the 2nd of 2 books written by Dr. Bluestein to teach synoptic and dynamic meteorology to undergraduate college students. Unlike other textbooks, this textbook takes the time to show alot more of the steps in the derivation of equations used in meteorology. Of course this has added to the size of the book but the fact that the author has taken the care to include this in his book is quite helpful for those learning meteorology. It is a useful reference book.

5 out of 5 stars All the weather plus the mathematics behind it.......2002-04-29

This is the second of two volumes by Bluestein and it is filled with useful information and presented in an engaging manner. Many meteorology textbooks (unfortunately) choose between presenting synoptic meteorology and dynamic meteorology--you're left to synthesize them yourself. The great virtue of this volume is that they're both here in all their glory, so you not only learn the mathematics but also get a feel for modern synoptic analysis. Bluestein is perhaps most famous for his tornado chases, but this volume proves that he is also a master of theory.

        4 out of 5 stars Holton Takes A Vacation.......2000-08-30

Definitely a much more readable and applicable discussion of dynamic meteorology than the archetype book by Holton.

Part II is more geered toward operational forecasting and if you had dynamic meteo in college and still have Holton, only purchase Part II. Part I is a nice review of what you should have all ready known and only really used again since college if you are in grad school...otherwise, Part 2 is great, detailing synoptic wx systems and the interaction with QGOE forcing, etc...a nice comprehensive review, and some things new too, well worth the buy (only drawback is the price, ouch!!!)

5 out of 5 stars Lovley Lovley book.......2000-05-17

I loved how Howard used his adventures to write this book and it helps other people relize how hard his job is and how dangerous it is...also at the same time exciting....I think this book was a wonderful enjoyment to read.

        Book Description

This new, comprehensive textbook for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students of meteorology presents for the first time information that is now considered essential in modern weather forecasting. Based on a successful series of courses taught by the author at the University of Oklahoma, the text carefully examines the foundations of synoptic meteorology, from the analysis of scalar fields to atmospheric kinematics, dynamics, and thermodynamics. Newer topics such as Q-vectors, and modern observing systems such as Doppler radar are discussed, and several detailed figures and many helpful problems are included. This timely work emphasizes both physical understanding and mathematical analysis, and clearly explains observations in light of current theory. It will be a valuable reference for weather forecasters and researchers as well as students.

From the reviews: "This huge book written in several years by one of the few mathematicians able to do it, appears as a precise and impressive study (not very easy to read) of this bothsided question that replaces, in a coherent way, without being encyclopaedic, a large library of books and papers scattered without a uniform language. Instead of summarizing the author gives his own way of exposition with original complements. This requires no preliminary knowledge. ...The purpose which the author explains in his introduction, i.e. a deep probabilistic interpretation of potential theory and a link between two great theories, appears fulfilled in a masterly manner".M. Book Description

From its origins in Newtonian physics, potential theory has developed into a major field of mathematical research. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of classical potential theory: it covers harmonic and subharmonic functions, maximum principles, polynomial expansions, Green functions, potentials and capacity, the Dirichlet problem and boundary integral representations. The first six chapters deal concretely with the basic theory, and include exercises. The final three chapters are more advanced and treat topological ideas specifically created for potential theory, such as the fine topology, the Martin boundary and minimal thinness.
The presentation is largely self-contained and is accessible to graduate students, the only prerequisites being a reasonable grounding in analysis and several variables calculus, and a first course in measure theory. The book will prove an essential reference to all those with an interest in potential theory and its applications.

                      Book Description

Non-central forces have a wide variety of applications in classical and quantum mechanics as demonstrated in this book. The author emphasizes the study of time-dependent potentials, predominantly in two dimensions, without neglecting the quite well understood time-independent case. The construction of invariants in the classical case and the study of solutions to Schrödinger's equation, as well as a detailed presentation of various mathematical techniques are of main concern to the author. The book addresses theoretical physicists and mathematicians, but it will also be useful for electrical and mechanical engineers.

                        Book Description

This is a collection of research papers based on the talks given at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at Château de Bonas in France in July of 1993 and approved for publication by a panel of referees. The contributions are by some of the most prominent and active research workers in the subject from the NATO countries and a limited number of selected invitees from the rest of the mathematical world. The workshop brought together mathematicians doing work in the classical and the modern aspects of the subject for mutual interaction, and the articles in the volume bear evidence to this fact. This is a valuable book for all the mathematicians with research interest in potential theory.
There are 33 research papers on several aspects of the current research in potential theory. Besides the latest research work of some of the most prominent and respected researchers in the subject, it contains a very valuable and thoroughly researched article on the mean value property of harmonic functions by I. Netuka and J. Vesely. The article by T. Murai on ozone depletion and its study through certain differential equations is very topical and undoubtedly of great interest to many. The volume also contains a large number of state-of-the-art research problems posed by the participants at the workshop.

This volume is based on the lecture notes of six courses delivered at a CIMPA Summer School in Temuco, Chile, in January 2001. The courses are: asymptotic of the heat kernel in unbounded domains; spin systems with long range interactions; non-linear Dirichlet problem and non-linear integration; first-passage percolation; central limit theorem for Markov processes; stochastic orders and stopping times in Brownian motion. The level of each course is that of a graduate course, but the material will also be of interest for the specialist.

Just another ladies' lightwight novellas, I thought, maybe a romance novel, as I picked it up for some temporary reading. I couldn't have been more wrong. Indeed it is light, a lighthearted story about how life's not so little challenges and missteps are approached with steely resolve by the otherwise giggly protagonist and her support group. Most men including me would stop right there - nice ladies book but no thanks.

On the contrary, the storytelling is always sumptuous, often hilarious, and interwoven with threads of colors familiar to men, e.g., the stress of getting ready for a date, the result of drinking on an empty stomach, the delights of sights of attractive members of the opposite sex, performing effectively as a single parent, working out at a new club without looking like a fool, etc., etc.. I couldn't put it down. It translates so well between Venus and Mars that it is an encyclopedic store of insight, like a secret decoder ring, or a Field&Stream, on the perspective of women. Some of them, anyhow.

The plot is a post-divorce search for balance and happiness, including romance, and revolves around how one lady deals with this middle-aged angst through friends, colleagues, (nearly grown) kids, and enemies. Her (mis)adventures get her into a multitude of fixes, including some amazingly deep quicksand, that she navigates with self -effacing humor and klutziness. For instance, in a shopping trip with her savvy daughter she is as a rookie at her first practice. Her descriptions of makeovers at the high end stores are told as if by a novice fisherman witnessing the tying of a great fly. Her support group appears as a pack of wolves who don't actually like each other but hunt well together.

This story is rich, witty, relevant, funny, and told in a context that will make great sense to men. The author is uniquely dangerous as a translator of this genre to men, and could be starting a great precedent. I am looking forward to stealing into the chick literature section for her other books.

4 out of 5 stars Light-hearted story, made me chuckle at times.......2006-10-24

                                    I rarely read Chick-Lit.

However, after attending Heather's work-shop at a Writer's Conference at Sac State last week-end, I was so impressed with the way she apoke and presented herself, I bought both of her books that are currently in print.

I'll be at her book-signing for book number three coming out next month; I enjoyed the camaraderie between her, her kids and her friends, and can "so" see many of my friends and family in this book.

Many times she brought a chuckle out of me ... sometimes even an out-loud laugh.

I can totally relate to some of the situations she gets herself into, without even trying ... just like Lucy and Ethel.

I'd recommend Heather's books to anyone wanting to read a light-hearted piece of fluff, with a bit of anxiety tossed in for good measure.

                                    5 out of 5 stars a perfectly fun read........2005-10-28

i tend to be a tough literary critic and generally read non-fiction and historial fiction, rarely indulging in "chick-lit". however, i have to make an exception for "It's Never Too Late." i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it was funny without being overdone, it was smart without being pretentious and you found yourself genuinely invested in the charactors. there were times during the day when i would think of what i'd read the night before and have the urge to call "Angie" to find out what happened on her date last night. that kind of engagement makes for a very fun read. kudos to Heather and can't wait for the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Lively and fun.......2005-10-16

This was a very lively, enjoyable book about a woman's life after divorce. Angie is a spunky, memorable woman whose husband left her with a whole lot of debt a year before. What's worse, her husband left her for an obese woman with an enormous bank account.

After this humiliation, Angie's friends advise her to have a one-night stand. One friend encourages Angie to join her at an art sale where she can meet men and rebuild her self-confidence in the social arena. However, Angie meets someone who is bad news in a very inventive and unique way, and her friends have to hatch a plan to save her.

Angie is a smart, funny narrator who doesn't waste time feeling bad for herself. Her friends are also a fun, interesting group with varied personalities. The plot is just as engaging as the characters. Although some of the events in the book are far-fetched and a little unbelievable, this is still one of the best chick lit novels I've read this year. I'm looking forward to the sequel, "It's Never Too Late to be a Bridesmaid," due in February 2006.

5 out of 5 stars Move over Janet Evanovich!!!.......2005-10-02

TOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!! I am truly in awe of Heather Estay's wit, humor and imagination throughout the entire book. It is non stop belly laughing. The situations Angie gets herself into are a riot and when her buddies rescue her time and time again, you only wish you had friends like these.

I laughed out loud so many times that my husband, who was sitting in the other room watching TV, kept coming in and insisting I read those parts to him. He loved it!!!!

This book is a "feel good" book and I can't wait for the next one!

We all have a little bit of Angie in us....
