    Book Description

The preservation of biodiversity is an essential part of the global concept for sustainable development. Ecologically and socially acceptable management of biodiversity is a prerequisite for the preservation of the wealth and productivity of natural ecological systems, and maintainance of the cultural differences in the relationship between man and nature. The Agenda 21 adopted at the Rio Summit in 1992 calls for concerted action by governments, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and the scientific community for the preservation of biodiversity.

A lively introduction to the basic principles of geology and other earth sciences.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Salt of the Earth.......2003-11-28

In the introduction to "Music of the Earth," Morton laments that his editor removed a great deal of his "cornball humor" from early drafts of the book. She obviously didn't get it all, but what remains shows that Morton has a genuine and even charming enthusiasm for his subject.

"Music of the Earth" explores a wide range to geological topics, from continental drift, volcanoes and earthquakes to geysers, ice ages, deserts and mass extinctions. Morton explains the basics of geology using analogies that sometimes seem a bit forced (try using "grandma's apple pie" to illustrate plate tectonics), but I have to admit that the corny examples helped me to understand the subject better than more elegant discussions in other books.

All in all, I enjoyed reading Morton's book because he has a genuine and infectious enthusiasm for geology. You may shake your head at the occasional bad pun, but I suspect that you'll learn more from Morton than you will from other, stuffier earth science texts.

5 out of 5 stars Learn geology while being entertained.......1999-04-18

If you want to learn some geology, with emphasis on volcanism, this is the place to start. Ron Morton gives a good overview of geological sciences, entertaining us all the way, and at times even painting frightening word pictures. With comments on poetry, literature, politics, engineering, and human behaviour, Dr.Morton appears as the modern renaissance man. We are all the richer for having this book, and we envy the real winners, who surely are the students in Dr. Morton's geology classes.

      Book Description

Theory of Superconductivity is considered one of the best treatments of the field. This monograph, by Nobel Prize-winning physicist J. Robert Schrieffer, has been reprinted because of its enduring value as an introduction to the theory of superconductivity. Based on a series of lectures presented by the author at the University of Pennsylvania, the fundamentals of the theory of superconductivity are stressed as a means of providing the reader with a framework for the literature in which detailed applications of the microscopic theory are made to specific problems. It also serves as a foundation for the more recent developments in this active field.

          Book Description

This book presents a complete encyclopedia of superconducting fluctuations, summarising the last thirty-five years of work in the field. The first part of the book is devoted to an extended discussion of the Ginzburg-Landau phenomenology of fluctuations in its thermodynamical and time-dependent versions and its various applications. The second part deals with microscopic justification of the Ginzburg-Landau approach and presents the diagrammatic theory of fluctuations. The third part is devoted to a less-detailed review of the manifestation of fluctuations in observables: diamagnetism, magnetoconductivity, various tunneling characteristics, thermoelectricity, and NMR relaxation. The final chapters turn to the manifestation of fluctuations in unconventional superconducting systems: nanodrops, nanorings, Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless state, quantum phase transition between superconductor and insulator, and thermal and quantum fluctuations in weak superconducting systems. The book ends with a brief discussion on theories of high temperature superconductivity, where fluctuations appear as the possible protagonist of this exciting phenomenon.

            Book Description

This book is P. W. Anderson's long-awaited full presentation of his theory of high-T c superconductivity in the cuprates. He realized that this striking new phenomenon needed for its explanation not just a new mechanism or "gimmick" but a radical reworking of the electronic theory of metals, especially those of low dimension. The many fundamentally new ideas that are first fully presented here will require a rewriting of the textbooks of many-body theory, which may take decades. The book incorporates full discussions of the experimental situation in these complex materials, both the normal and the superconducting states. The latest advances are contained in a selection of re-and pre-prints of recent work by Anderson and collaborators.

The fundamental insight contained in the book is that the conditions for validity of the renormalized quasiparticle theory of metals ("Fermi Liquid Theory") are much more restrictive than had been thought, and are not satisfied in the CuO 2 planes of high-T c materials (among, probably, many other examples). This requires a new state of matter to be invented, new transport theories, and new mechanisms for superconductivity. This book will supersede all theoretical discussions of superconductivity that are now available in book form.

              Book Description

Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons is a unique effect in which the electronic states of a solid can self-organize to acquire quantum phase coherence. The phenomenon is closely linked to Bose-Einstein condensation in other systems such as liquid helium and laser-cooled atomic gases. Covering theoretical aspects as well as recent experimental work, the book provides a comprehensive survey of the field. After introducing the relevant basic physics of excitons, the authors discuss exciton-phonon interactions as well as the behavior of biexcitons. They also cover exciton phase-transitions and give particular attention to nonlinear optical effects including the optical Stark effect and chaos in excitonic systems. The thermodynamics of equilibrium, quasiequilibrium, and nonequilibrium systems are examined in detail. Throughout, the authors interweave theoretical and experimental results. The book will be of great interest to graduate students and researchers in semiconductor and superconductor physics, quantum optics, and atomic physics.

                Book Description

The recent development of theory on electron correlation in metals is explained in detail in this book. The strongest interaction between electrons in metals is the Coulomb repulsive force. This interaction gives rise to magnetism such as the ferromagnetism in Fe, Co and Ni. This interaction also induces the metal-insulator transition called the Mott transition. Surprisingly, recent studies confirm that the repulsive interaction is the origin of high temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide systems. Moreover, the number of new superconducting systems due to the electron correlation are rapidly increasing.

                    Product Description

Since the 1980s, a general theme in the study of high-temperature superconductors has been to test the BCS theory and its predictions against new data. At the same time, this process has engendered new physics, new materials, and new theoretical frameworks. Remarkable advances have occurred in sample quality and in single crystals, in hole and electron doping in the development of sister compounds with lower transition temperatures, and in instruments to probe structure and dynamics. Handbook of High-Temperature Superconductvity is a comprehensive and in-depth treatment of both experimental and theoretical methodologies by the the world's top leaders in the field. The Editor, Nobel Laureate J. Robert Schrieffer, and Associate Editor James S. Brooks, have produced a unified, coherent work providing a global view of high-temperature superconductivity covering the materials, the relationships with heavy-fermion and organic systems, and the many formidable challenges that remain.

                    Book Description

The book targets a broad readership. First of all, it targets young researchers (postgraduate students) in solid state physics (both physicists and theoretical chemists) as it contains a wide and comprehensive coverage of all important branches of the subject including an up-to-date survey of recent revolutionary advances in quantum mechanics which have made it possible not only to calculate many properties of molecules and solids in close agreement with experiment, but to make reliable predictions in cases when a direct experiment is not possible (e.g. the Earth core). Secondly, it should be a valuable asset to established researchers in the areas of materials science, solid-state physics and chemistry due to very detailed explanations of a wide range of phenomena ranging from symmetry, lattice vibrations, electronic structure and superconductivity to magnetic and dielectric properties. Rigour and detail in explaining complicated mathematical techniques and in providing derivations when talking of various physical concepts are essential for those who would like to really understand things they have never had a chance to. Because of that and of the fact that the book contains a lot of material from different areas of solid-state physics retold from a single viewpoint, it should be indispensable for lecturers. Not only a number of courses, both general and specialised, should be possible to set up, but these courses may also be of a different level of difficulty ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate and then to highly advanced ones. This is because of a clear marking system adopted in the book. Hence, it should also be useful for advanced third- and fourth-year undergraduate students.

5 out of 5 stars Clarity and depth combined.......2005-07-06

I think this book could be of a great help not only to students, but also to physicists who are not experts in condensed matter physics. I belong to the last category, and the book turned out to be very useful for me when I decided to refresh my knowledge of the condensed matter physics for research purposes. I am also thinking about adapting some of the chapters for teaching graduate quantum mechanics courses.
This book combines the clarity and depth which is a quite rare occasion for a monograph. Quite often you start reading a monograph and think: "Oh, I know all this." In the opposite case you see that the book provides new information for you, but in such a complicated manner that you give up. The Kantorovich's book certainly does not belong to these two categories.

                      Book Description

Laura is in the middle of a torrid affair—with the trains that pass on the tracks at the end of her block. She is obsessed. She can't sleep. She sits on the porch all night lying in wait. Then she throws bricks, bowling balls, cans of paint. She loves the sound as they connect, meeting metal and glass. Smash goes the windshield of the camouflage Humvee. Crash go the headlights of a helicopter. The trains are carrying weapons destined for the front lines of America's latest war, and Laura can't rest until she's consummated the affair by blowing one up! She plots, she plans—but meanwhile, the trains keep right on coming, haunting her. Taunting her, too. All her good intentions haven't done anything to stop them or even slow one down—yet.

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Oh, Aaron - I Wish I Knew How To Quit You.......2007-03-14

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I now present to you: the best American writer of my generation, Mr. Aaron Cometbus (please hold your applause 'til the end). Yes, it's true. You can have your Eggerses, your Frank Portmans (heh), but I'll take me some Cometbus any day.

For those of you not in the know, Aaron has penned (quite literally handwritten) his own books and zines for the better part of two decades now, and to say these manuals of stories, musings and manifestos have merely influenced a whole generation of the DIY underground would be a cruel understatement indeed.

Fueled by the dual powers of ink and Xerox, Aaron has painstakingly chronicled his (mis)adventures, and it is not merely the substance of his tales that makes them so good - it is the teller himself. With an economy of prose that can be incredibly comic and heartbreaking (often at the same time) and turns of phrase that'll give you whiplash, I put Aaron right up there with Bukowski, Vonnegut, Fitzgerald, etc in the pantheon of American writers.

Don't believe me? Well, the Philadelphia Independent calls him "America's most famous unknown writer." And The Rocket says, "Aaron Cometbus is this generation's literary voice...simple, precise, and absolutely compelling." Don't believe them? Well check out this sample from his latest offering:

"That's when I saw it. An interloper, hiding in the greens. A hair, and not one of mine. I picked it out and held it up to the window. Long-stemmed and red like a rose - I'd seen its kind before. They still turned up on my blankets and clothes. Like tiny bombs. Time bombs. The last little pieces. I put it on my tongue, but the oil and vinegar had eradicated any taste of her that might have lingered. Still, I swallowed it like a pill. My medicine. Thank you for reminding me, though I have yet to forget."

                      Nice.

All that being said, this book isn't really that great. Hey - Bukowski had his "Women", Vonnegut had his "Galapagos", Fitzgerald had "The Last Tycoon" - even Dr. Frank has released a few clunkers. It happens.

The offering in question, "I Wish There Was Something I Could Quit", although professionally bound, not handwritten and so short you can read it in before 60 Minutes gets to Andy Rooney, is still the kind of familiar first-person quasi-autobiographical chunk o' life that we Cometbus fans have grown to adore over these many years.

However, in this tale we find our formerly itinerant hero now settled down, entrenched in his own broken heart. He lives in a broken down van in a yard, "neighbors" and co-dependant caretaker to crazy Laura, a recent survivor of the double-whammy of girlfriend loss and band breakup. Their lives intersect in a myriad of ways with annoying couple Susan and Jemuel. And that's about it. Nothing of incredible consequence really happens here, and even though plot has never been a crucial element to the success of Aaron's previous works, there just seems to be something lacking here. Something ineffable. Inspiration, perhaps? I dunno.

This book is not the best sampling of Aaron's writing available on Amazon (and, knowing Aaron's anti-corporate stance, it's semi-amazing his words can even be found here at all). Still, any Aaron is better than no Aaron at all, and you might wanna pick this one up 'cause its cheap, quick and easy (insert your dating joke here). And while I wouldn't advise against any of his writing (so far), what you need to do immediately is pick up a copy of Despite Everything (the Cometbus Omnibus, available on Amazon and elsewhere).

Oh, and you may now applaud.
