    Book Description

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are evolving into highly integrated technologies for a variety of application areas. Add the biological dimension to the mix and a host of new problems and issues arise that require a broad understanding of aspects from basic, materials, and medical sciences in addition to engineering. Collecting the efforts of renowned leaders in each of these fields, BioMEMS: Technologies and Applications presents the first wide-reaching survey of the design and application of MEMS technologies for use in biological and medical areas. This book considers both the unique characteristics of biological samples and the challenges of microscale engineering. Divided into three main sections, it first examines fabrication technologies using non-silicon processes, which use materials that are appropriate for medical/biological analyses. These include UV lithography, LIGA, nanoimprinting, injection molding, and hot-embossing. Attention then shifts to microfluidic components and sensing technologies for sample preparation, delivery, and analysis. The final section outlines various applications and systems at the leading edge of BioMEMS technology in a variety of areas such as genomics, drug delivery, and proteomics. Laying a cross-disciplinary foundation for further development, BioMEMS: Technologies and Applications provides engineers with an understanding of the biological challenges and biological scientists with an understanding of the engineering challenges of this burgeoning technology.

      Book Description

"Eduardo Kac's work represents a turning point. What it questions is our current attitudes to creativity, taking that word in its most fundamental sense."
-Edward Lucie-Smith, author of Visual Arts in the 20th Century

"His works introduce a vital new meaning into what had been known as the creative process while at the same time investing the notion of the artist-inventor with an original social and ethical responsibility."
-Frank Popper, author of Origins and Development of Kinetic Art

"Kac's radical approach to the creation and presentation of the body as a wet host for artificial memory and 'site-specific' work raises a variety of important questions that range from the status of memory in digital culture to the ethical dilemmas we are facing in the age of bioengineering and tracking technology."
-Christiane Paul, Whitney Museum of Art

For nearly two decades Eduardo Kac has been at the cutting edge of media art, first inventing early online artworks for the web and continuously developing new art forms that involve telecommunications and robotics as a new platform for art. Interest in telepresence, also known as telerobotics, exploded in the 1990s, and remains an important development in media art. Since that time, Kac has increasingly moved into the fields of biology and biotechnology.

Telepresence and Bio Art is the first book to document the evolution of bio art and the aesthetic development of Kac, the creator of the "artist's gene" as well as the controversial glow-in-the-dark, genetically engineered rabbit Alba. Kac covers a broad range of topics within media art, including telecommunications media, interactive systems and the Internet, telematics and robotics, and the contact between electronic art and biotechnology. Addressing emerging and complex topics, this book will be essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art.

                Book Description

Living systems synthesize seven different classes of polymers. They provide structure and form for cells and organisms, function as catalysts and energy storage and carry the genetic information. All these polymers possess technically interesting properties. Some of these biopolymers are already used commercially. This special volume of Advances in Biochemical Engineering/Biotechnology comprises 10 chapters. It gives an overview of the water insoluble biopolyesters, in particular of the microbially synthesized poly-hydroxyalkanoate (PHA) family. It reports the state of the art of metabolism, regulation and genetic background, the latest advances made in genetic optimization of bacteria, "construction" of transgenic plants and in vitro synthesis by means of purified enzymes. Furthermore, it describes relevant technologies and evaluates perspectives concerning increasing the economic viability and competitiveness of PHA and discusses applications in medicine, packaging, food and other fields.

                    Book Description

Humans first used carbon as chars from firewood in ritual paintings and primitive metallurgical processes. Natural forms of carbon have been known since antiquity, yet the knowledge of the carbon element in chemistry and its technical applications on a larger scale are a relatively recent development. The industrial revolution in Europe two centuries ago led the way to the numerous applications of these graphitic forms that are still used today. Graphite and Precursors features short tutorial articles on different topics related to the science and technology of carbons intended for engineers, students of Materials Science and scientists who are seeking a fundamental understanding without "reinventing the wheel." This first volume of the World of Carbon book series focuses on graphite and its precursors, including its origin and various implications. The basic properties of hexagonal graphite are developed, and several theoretical and experimental approaches explain why this crystalline solid is fascinating insolid state physics. Also featured are the numerous applications connected to thermal, mechanical and chemical graphites, as well as their various industrial uses in polycrystalline form. Finally, carbon precursors are introduced.

4 out of 5 stars No buckyballs?! .......2004-10-03

Dusty old carbon. How interesting could this be? Well, right under our noses, there is a surprising amount of structure in carbon's graphite form. This book goes into some detail about the different possible forms of carbon, and the band structure.

Various chapters study mechanical and surface properties. Plus, you can learn about the amorphous and non-crystalline properties.

What is not covered here are Buckyballs. C60. Discovered in soot several years ago. Some of you are possibly interested in that, more than graphite. You might have to turn to later books in this series.

There is increasing pressure, soon to be legislation, for particular offenders to be given a choice of psychological treatment or imprisonment, even if treatment must sometimes be within special prison hospitals or units for offenders.

The key issue will be motivating offenders to commit themselves to treatment, and to maintain their motivation trough the therapeutic programme and thereafter, on release.

This is the first book to tackle the subject of motivating offenders in therapeutic programmes and as such, will prove an invaluable resource for forensic practitioners.

                        · Written by some of the top clinical and forensic practitioners and researchers in offender rehabilitation

                        · There is a real demand for a book on this subject as a result of changes in criminal justice policy and in mental health provision

"How can you help someone who doesn't want to be helped? Should you even try? If motivation is considered not only as an intrinsic attribute of the offender, but dependent upon a range of factors including what obstacles there are, what sort of changes are needed and the kind of intervention on offer, steps can be taken to improve the situation. Mary McMurran has skilfully brought together eminent researchers and practitioners, who provide the reader with best knowledge and practice from two major fields-addictions and criminological psychology-to examine the therapeutic process and suggest how best to engage offenders in therapy. Throughout, ethical issues surrounding motivating offenders to change are closely scrutinised. This book is an invaluable resource and guide to those training and working with offenders and training staff, including clinical and prison psychologists, probation officers, forensic psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, occupational therapists , counsellors, and prison officers.

I haven't read a Harlequin book in years and have never read one from the Flipside series. The title had me interested, and after the first chapter I couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in one evening. My only complaint is that it wasn't long enough!

                        4 out of 5 stars Fun & Witty Romance.......2005-12-15

This was a good choice to end the Flipside series; it was a light and witty read. Two combative coworkers - Madison and Colin - need each others' help to save their company from ruin. Someone in the company is responsible for embezzling money, and Colin is the prime suspect. As he works to clear his name, he also "works" as Madison's finance, when she concocts a scheme to fool her father into believing she wants marriage and family. Obviously, the farce turns into real romance for the couple. Some of the lines are particularly witty and the story overall is much better than some in the series have been.

                        5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......2005-06-22

This book was very well written, entertaining and hilarious. A great poolside/beach read. Although I read it from my sofa, I could not put it down and read it in one night! I am definately going to purchase more Nikki Rivers, old and new, I am so glad I came across this exciting author.

                            Book Description

Why is it that so many children in the US and England underperform academically in comparison with people in many other industrialized countries? Despite the ongoing search for effective teaching approaches, it would appear that for many children, motivation is the central issue. Arguing that current perspectives on motivation are too narrow, this book draws upon a major five year international study that has examined the impact of factors at the level of the child, the school, the family and wider society. In providing recommendations for policy and practice, this text sets a challenge to those who seek simplistic solutions to problems of student apathy and disaffection.

"A final gift from Bruce Alexander: a new book in his acclaimed mystery series about eighteenth-century blind London judge Sir John Fielding. Beloved by legions of fans and a staple of best-of-year book lists, the Fielding mysteries thrill readers with a pitch-perfect fusion of vivid characterizations, evocative atmosphere, and riveting plotlines. And now, for all those fans, here is one more. In Rules of Engagement, Sir John and Jeremy are confronted with a series of bizarre deaths on the streets of Georgian London in a mystery that tests even Sir John's legendary skills of deduction. When Lord Lammermoor, a close personal friend of the Lord Chief Justice's, plunges to his death from the heights of Westminster Bridge in front of a dozen witnesses, suicide is ruled as the most likely cause of death. But Lammermoor's fatal leap coincides with the arrival of Dr. Goldsworthy, a student of the famous Dr. Anton Mesmer and his studies in animal magnetism. Sir John's suspicions are piqued when it is discovered that Goldsworthy's patron in London is none other than the beautiful and austere Lady Lammermoor. Meanwhile, Jeremy's sleuthing uncovers a web of intrigue within the ranks of the Lammermoor family, and the deeper he investigates, the more suspects he uncovers who stand to gain from Lammermoor's death."

3 out of 5 stars Good start to a poor series finale.......2007-03-20

Having just finished this final installment in the Sir John Fielding 18th century London series, I have to agree with most other reviewers that this was a very disappointing attempt to complete a story only partially written by the series author before he died. It is clear that the author's enjoyable and gifted writing style stops mid-way through the book. Someone else suggested that the first nine chapters were from the series author's pen, but in my estimation it's clear that he wrote only the first seven chapters in total. Some small sections of the remaining five chapters may have been from his hand, but largely those chapters lacked the detail and clarity of events and locations we've come to appreciate. Even some of the exchanges between main characters were utterly confusing (almost nonsensical at times) and totally unlike the behavior of the beloved characters we've come to know. The plot seemed to hurry to its conclusion as events were poorly described.

Having said this, the story was one of the best in the series through chapter seven, and the final pages did at least suggest the future of some of the main characters. It's still worth reading in order to complete the series, although you may find yourself hurrying through the inferior final half of the story.

1 out of 5 stars Should have left it in peace........2006-05-05

What a horrible book. The author's family did him a grave disservice by allowing someone else to "finish" the book by grafting on an idiotic ending--where it turns out the villain is a necromancer and all the crimes involved black magic, for Heaven's sake! Completely jarring, completely out of character for the series. They should have just let it alone.

                            2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-04-27

What a sad way to end a superb series. If I read "Said I" one more time I seriously thought about throwing the book across the room. If you haven't read this one and really enjoyed Alexander's other books, save your money, it's just not worth it!

5 out of 5 stars A richly detailed murder mystery audiobook.......2006-04-11

Rules Of Engagement is a richly detailed murder mystery audiobook, set in eighteenth century London. Sir John Fielding and Jeremy encounter a puzzle when Lord Lammermoor, a personal friend of the Lord Chief Justice, falls to his death from Westminster Bridge in front of witnesses. Suicide is ruled to be the most likely cause of death, yet Sir John remains suspicious when his investigations uncover individuals with a great deal to gain from Lord Lammermoor's death, particularly the alluring Lady Lammermoor. This thrilling audiobook addition to Bruce Alexander's outstanding series of Fielding mysteries is suspensefully and effectively narrated by John Lee.

3 out of 5 stars Good News, Bad News.......2006-03-25

The good news is that 85% of the book is high quality Bruce Alexander. It's a great story, superbly told. The bad news is that the last 15% is obviously the inferior product of a couple of stumbling amateur authors. But as bad as the last part is, a Bruce Alexander fan will still relish this book since most of it is so good - plotting, atmosphere, character development, writing technique. Don't pass it by!
