Book Description
This book is a collection of keynote reviews and detailed case-studies covering the principal areas of active research and state-of-the-art industrial practice in the field of mine water management. It addresses both issues of water quantity (such as the impact of longwall mining on the piezometry and hydraulic properties of overlying aquifers) and water quality (spanning an array of sites from deep coal mines to open-pit base metal mines), as well as a wealth of hybrid, integrated studies in which hydrogeological and geochemical aspects are considered (and managed) together. The papers presented in this book are intended for practising geologists and engineers involved in the management of active and abandoned mine sites all over the world. It is also of interest to academic geoscientists and students with interests in low-temperature aqueous geochemistry and the hydrogeology of complex, quasi-karstic groundwater flow systems.

Description:
A field experiment was carried out in order to assess the effect of urea, topsoil and municipal compost addition on plant performance and on the uptake of heavy metals by plants from contaminated soil. The experimental site was a disturbed soil in spite of remediation actions after several decades of uranium leaching (Eastern Thuringia, Germany) in 2004. Two plant species, Lupinus angustifolius L. and Secale cereale L. were grown at the site in a controlled experiment. We estimated the differences in soil pH, soil humidity, metal content, S-SO"4, P-PO"4, nitrogen (ammonium, nitrate and nitrite), plant growth, and plant uptake of metals between the experimental variants. The study indicated that the most efficient treatment (in terms of biomass increase) was compost, followed by topsoil and urea addition. The mechanism underlying this effect was the change in soil parameters leading to higher availability of nutrients. There was, however, a depletion of the soil nitrogen in the amended variants at the end of the growing season.

Description:
The sulphide mine tailings in Falun, Sweden is covered with a mixture of fly ash and biosludge as a measure against acid mine drainage. This is a study of the tailings geochemistry by means of pH, Eh, iron, sulphate, calcium and organic carbon concentrations from a field control site and field studies of the covered deposit. The sulphate/iron mole ratios of the interstitial solutions can be used as a proxy to indicate dominating chemical processes in the tailings. In the Falun tailings no ferric iron oxidation of the mining waste seems to take place. Thermodynamic calculation of the redox potential demonstrates which half-cell reaction is governing the redox potential variations. The organic carbon concentrations are very high in the covered Galgberget tailings deposit compared to the control site. This carbon originates from the cover material and is used as a measure against oxygen penetration to the mine tailings. The drawback of the dissolved organic material is that it can act as complexing agents for heavy metals. Also, the dissolved organic material is according to an empiric model decreasing rapidly and of negligible importance after a short time, approximately 30 years. The Galgberget tailings deposit is greatly oversaturated with respect to gypsum making the formation of hardpans possible. Compared to the uncovered control site the field studies of the covered Galgberget tailings deposit show a decrease in the oxidation of iron sulphide minerals and an increase in pH of the leachate with time. time.

Description:
The understanding of molecular mechanisms in the cycling of elements in general is essential to our alteration of current processes. One field where such geochemical element cycles are of major importance is the prevention and treatment of acid mine drainage waters (AMD) which are prone to occur in every anthropogenic, modified landscape where sulfidic rock material has been brought to the surface during mine operations. Microbiologically controlled production of AMD leads not only to acidification, but at the same time the dissolution of heavy metals makes them bioavailable posing a potential ecotoxicological risk. The water path then can contaminate surface and ground water resources which leads to even bigger problems in large catchment areas. The investigation of mechanisms in natural attenuation has already provided first ideas for applications of naturally occurring bioremediation schemes. Especially an improved soil microflora can enhance the natural attenuation when adapted microbes are applied to contaminated areas. Future schemes for plant extraction, control of water efflux by increasing evapotranspiration, and by subsequent land use with agricultural plants with biostabilization and phytosequestration potential will provide putative control measures. The mechanisms in parts of these processes have been evaluated and the resulting synthesis applied to derive a bioremediation plan using the former uranium mine in Eastern Thuringia as a case study.

Description:
The distribution of rare earth elements (REE) was applied to study processes in remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD). The concentration of total REE is up to 3mgl^-^1 in AMD. Normalization of REE concentrations in seepage and surface waters to Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) shows strong enrichment of heavy REE. For the case of the studied AMD REE patterns are representative for the seepage location. Therefore, they can be used to identify (former) waste rock dumps as a source of valley sediment contamination. Results from percolation experiments and LA-ICP-MS measurements show that REE patterns of seepage water samples do not reflect the total REE pattern of the source rocks but are preferentially eluted from Silurian ''Ockerkalk''. Along a flow path of the creek Gessenbach, REEs decrease in concentration and fractionate due to coprecipitation with Fe phases. REE patterns are also applied to the study of sorption/uptake of heavy metals by biomass. A strain with high potential for remediation purposes could be identified by incubating microbial strains isolated from the investigation area directly in AMD. Finally, for a contaminated soil with acidic pH and thus high availability of heavy metals to plants the transfer of heavy metals from soil to plants was studied by the use of REE patterns. For different herbaceous plants and trees different REE patterns were observed although the corresponding soil was identical. Concentrations of REEs are always higher in leaves than in shoots/branches. However, within one species REE patterns are quite similar for leaves and the corresponding shoots/branches. ding shoots/branches.

Book Description
The considerable exploration success achieved by geochemistry over the last several decades - and still continuing - has provided both the basis and rationale for the Handbook of Exploration Geochemistry series, including Volume 6,
Drainage Geochemistry in Mineral Exploration. With contributions from 25 experts of truly global professional experience in drainage geochemistry, this book is a thorough appraisal of the state of the art in the use of surface and sub-surface waters, stream and lake sediments, heavy minerals for mineral exploration in tropical rain forests, temperate glaciated terrains, mountain chains, arid deserts and regions of agricultural and industrial pollution. Additional attention is given to gold and uranium exploration, and to the growing role of drainage geochemistry as a multi-purpose environmental mapping technique with applications in human health studies, ore deposit modelling and pollution monitoring. It comprises 16 chapters, more than 250 figures and a bibliography of some 1600 references.
This book is the most extensive and detailed single work on the principles and applications of drainage geochemistry in mineral exploration blending both theoretical considerations and practical implementations.

Book Description
It's not as if Nel Innes doesn't have enough on her plate already: keeping track of her unnervingly beautiful teenage daughter, sorting out a house full of animals, and organizing a farmers' market in the picturesque Paradise Fields. The last thing she needs is yet another complication in her life, but when her old friend Sir Gerald dies, and his son, Pierce, accompanied by his glamorous American wife, takes possession of the property, it seems that preserving the Fields is not on his list of priorities.
Nel takes up arms, determined to fight for the meadow and the market she loves. But who can she trust? She's pretty sure her friends Sacha and Vivian are on her side, but her sensible boyfriend of six months, Simon, an estate agent, is less encouraging. And then there's Jake, the infuriating yet attractive stranger who surprised her with a kiss under the mistletoe at the last market before Christmas. Maybe she's been a celibate widow for a little too long....
Customer Reviews:
If you like european romances..........2007-02-12
Nel has been a widow for ten years and is comfortable with life in her little village. Her two sons are at university and her daughter is almost finished high school. She is determined to remain unmarried until her children are independent so she has no complaints about her stuffy boyfriend, Simon, although her children do not like him and she never has lustful thoughts about him. She keeps busy with charity activities to support a local hospice. She is not bothered about the fact that she has not had sex since her husband died so Nel is surprised when a handsome younger man kisses her at the Christmas fair.
Nel is working hard to save Paradise Fields, the estate where she organizes a farmers market which supports the hospice. The new owners want to develop the land for cheap housing. Nel meets with the owners to oppose the development and discovers that their lawyer is Jake, the man who kissed her. Jake tries to date Nel, but she cannot believe a handsome London lawyer is interested in a plump, older woman and suspects he is just trying to get her to agree to the development plans.
When she ends up in Jake's bed one night, Nel puts it down to a mistake, but Jake keeps pursuing her and even seems to be trying to help her save Paradise Fields. Then Simon asks her to marry him and encourages her to agree to the development plan.
A charming story.......2006-07-06
Katie Fforde writes delightful stories about nice people. I was feeling particularly down one day (had just visited a much-loved family member who was dying of cancer) and needed something light and happy to read, so I plucked this book off my TBR shelf and settled down in my favorite chair. From the first word, I was immediately carried away into Fforde's fictional world. Nell is a lovely heroine--the kind of woman I would enjoy knowing. It was fun to read about her life because I knew that no matter how serious the problems were that she encountered, all would be well in the end. This is a great story told in Fforde's lighthearted style with both skill and charm. You'll enjoy it.
Very Nice Read.......2005-01-31
The first word that comes to mind after reading this novel is "pleasant" (a vastly underrated adjective IMHO). I haven't read this author before, and it was such a nice experience to read a book that was more about ordinary people, trying to live their lives as best they could, than about plot machinations and torrid sex scenes every other page (not that there's anything wrong with that). One comes to care about these characters and sympathize with their struggles of having to compromise about a real estate development, acknowledging that the children are really growing up and parents are really growing old.
So if you are looking for a well written book with strong character development, this book's the ticket. Nicely done!
Fforde At Her Very Best.......2005-01-22
There is no such thing as a bad Katie Fforde book, but Paradise Fields, her latest, is simply quintessential Katie: charming, funny, witty, engaging and a joy to read.
Here is the story of just-over-40 widow Nel Innes, who thinks of herself as an over-the-hill dowdy "old thing," a perception not shared by anyone else in her life, from her gorgeous best friend Viv to her twentysomething daughter Fleur to her dull-as-nails boyfriend, estate agent Simon (yawn). Nel halfheartedly thinks she will probably settle down at some point with Simon so she has a man around to do DIY work, when she gets embroiled in a community effort to safe Paradise Fields, a strip of riverfront land upon which sits the sick-children's hospice, a charity dear to her heart.
Nel is used to running farmers' markets and other charity events on Paradise Fields, all of whose profits go to the hospice, but now she is up against a real threat as a heartless couple and their equally heartless land developer plan to turn it into a housing development. As Nel plots and plans desperately to save the land, the landowning couple's nefarious (maybe) attorney Jake comes to muddy the waters. Literally. Nel knows better than to consort with the enemy, but Jake's charm is lethal.
Does Nel find love and happiness in Jake's arms? Or is he the devil? Will the hospice be saved? I found myself zipping through the pages, trying hard not to skip to the end to find out. It's that kind of book, as only Katie Fforde could write it. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
The personal essay form at its best.......1999-02-22
While the philosophy underlying this work is reminiscent of Thoreau, Sanders writing is much more graceful and his personality more warm and human than the Walden Pond horned frog ever hoped to be. Sanders has a keen eye for the insightful moment and treats himself and his subjects to piercing, yet sympathetic, examinations.
A Paradise for Lovers of the Written Word.......1998-02-22
As the daughter of a former U.S. Marine, I wasn't sure I'd like this book. I am pleased to say I not only like it, I fell in love with it. Scott Russell Sanders has more than a way with words, he has a love affair with words. In reading this book, I found a decent man, a thoughtful man of lively intellect. It is a pleasure to be in Mr. Sanders's company even if its only through the medium of the printed word.
