The life span of man has long occupied human thoughts. All men feel that the duration of life of living creatures is governed by fixed laws. But theologians, philosophers and scientists have failed to find an answer. In this publication the beaten paths of demographers, actuarians and statisticians are abandoned. It is tried to apply the laws of Nature and in particular the laws of physico-chemical equilibrium. For this purpose censuses of many nations and many biological experiments were investigated. It is maintained that the equilibrium between living creatures and their ecosystem is analogous to the equilibrium between living macromolecules and their biochemical environment. The publication presents the De Mortibus distribution as an underlying model for the duration of adult life. This family of distributions has two parameters which depend (1) on the genetic material and (2) on the ecosystem. Examples of humans, thoroughbred racehorses and laboratory animals including the deceleration of old-age mortality in low-mortality populations are given. It is stated that the limit distribution of the family represents the variability of the limits of the duration of life and that it can be used for forecasting the development of mortality in low-mortality populations.

First published in 1982, Don Turcotte and Jerry Schubert's Geodynamics became a classic textbook for several generations of students of geophysics and geology. Geodynamics provides the fundamentals necessary for an understanding of the workings of the solid earth, describing the mechanics of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain building in the context of the role of mantle convection and plate tectonics. Observations such as the earth's gravity field, surface heat flow, distribution of earthquakes, surface stresses and strains, and distribution of elements are discussed.

One of the Outstanding Textbooks in Geophysics EVER.......2003-12-02

Turcotte and Schubert updated their 1982 edition to account for new developments in geoscience, and the result is the most comprehensive textbook on geophysics for the upper level undergraduate/graduate student. It is an outstanding reference, and is clear and concise in its treatment of a variety of geophysical phenomena. Stress/Strain, Elasticity and Flexure, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Gravity, Rock Rheology, and Planetology are all treated with detail and provide the student with a tremendous introduction to geophysics. I recommend it to all geologists and geophysicists!

Life in the real world..........2003-09-02

"Geodynamics" has been a classic text in the field of, well, Geodynamics since the first edition came out, and it remains a brave attempt to squeeze a large amount of detail into one volume. In many ways however, this attempt is misguided. The material suffers from overcrowding in many chapters, and different approaches are used to solve the same problem, giving wildly different answers, with no attempt made to qualify which method is accepted as the most realistic.
A fairly comprehensive set of questions are liberally sprinkled throughout each chapter, although the one-number answers at the back of the book are usually insufficient, and some brief explanation would greatly enhance user-friendliness.
The main problem I found with this textbook however, is the inability to link the numerical methods presented with real world situations. The complexities of plate deformation for example are reduced to a set of sections on beam-bending, with little or no attempt at the end to draw the lessons learnt from the exercise back into some meaningful discussion of how the earth behaves. This is a common failure of analytical approaches to Earth Science problems, that the construction of a mathematical framework becomes an end in itself, and that real data are ignored or manipulated to shoehorn them into the predictions of the model. "Geodynamics" is a good summary of the techniques used to try to understand the workings of the earth, but often leaves one with a hollow feeling that one hasn't really learned anything about the earth itself at the end of each chapter.

I have known the first edition of this remarkable book, and am pleased to see the revised and improved version out. I hope that many Geophysicist will have a copy in their library eventually.

The book is written for petrologists and geochemists, but fundamental geochemical information is well presented and the use of excessive jargon is avoided, making the book readable to a wide audience of Earth scientists. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing a database of volcanic rock analyses compiled in the last two to three decades.

Though this book is now ten years old, its papers should still hold up well. It surveys the then new field of making thin films by using pulses of high intensity laser light. The papers are written by experts in these methods.

Nucleation dynamics and how a film can grow under deposition pulses are explained in one chapter.

Several chapters also discuss the related subject of laser-induced ablation of surfaces. Studies are summarised of the characteristics of the ablated material. In some ways, ablation can be considered the inverse process to deposition.

I was fortunate to read Dr. Carlos Seguin's translation (Peru). He added a chapter to his Spanish language translation: About the Good Bye. He said there is no real good bye, like the river that passes through... its water remains on the land or the trees it touches. In the same way, this book and its wonderful teaching will never leave you.. they will remain with you and be part of your life. You will never say good bye to The Prophet, his teachings will be with you forever.

Le passage sur les enfants m'a particulierement bouleversé. A l'instar de son personnage, cet auteur a dû faire énormment de méditation tout au long de sa vie, pour livrer un message, à la fois aussi simple et aussi bouleversant. Une inspiration divine qui lui a certainement permis de transcender sa condition humaine. A lire un mot à la fois.
