This lab manual is overpriced even by college textbook standards. It is nicely bound, but made with crap paper. The labs in it are made overly tedious with extra, uneeded steps to confuse a student.

Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24
I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.
Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08
Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

FROM THE PREFACEThe approach of this book is "how-to-do and hands-on." Its purpose is to provide clear, step-by-step instruction in many of the fundamental methods of hydrogeologic investigation. These methods include both 1) the traditional techniques of data analysis, such as mathematical computation by electronic calculator and construction of graphs by hand-plotting, and 2) microcomputer techniques employing electronic spreadsheets, graphing and gridding and contouring software. The microcomputer methods employ commercial software such as Lotus 1-2-3. Microsoft Excel, Quattro-Pro, Golden Software's Grapher and Surfer, and Geraghty and Miller's AQTESOLV. Although familiarity with any of the applications is helpful, the instructions in this manual assume no prior experience with them. Basic Hydrogeologic Methods is divided into three sections: Groundwater Occurrence and Movement, Groundwater Investigations, and Well and Aquifer Hydraulics. Each section begins with a brief summary of relevant terminology and principles. This introductory chapter is followed by a case study, which may be employed to provide a practical context for the hydrogeological methods that are described in subsequent chapters. Most of the methodological exercises culminate in an analytical product, such as data table, graph, contour map, etc., which readily serve as a focus for problem-solving activities, classroom discussions, and investigative reports. Many of the exercises present at least two investigative methods for accomplishing a particular hydrogeologic task. For example, time-drawdown graphs may be produced by a hand-plotting method or by a microcomputer method. For the professional scientist, the choice of a particular method might depend on such factors as the time available to carry out the task, the degree of accuracy required, or the availability of assessory equipment and materials. The introductory student can work through a more fundamental method (e.g., hand-plotting) before advancing to a microcomputer method (e.g., spreadsheet and graphing).

Very good introduction to, and reference on, Quantum Groups.......2006-01-28
This is a very good and solid introduction to, and reference book on, quantum groups (or quantum algebras, as they are also known). It is one of the more clear volumes on the subject, and presents information in a fairly straightforward way.
As with many introductions to quantum groups, it can take a while to understand what is happening unless one already has some understanding of the field, however, the writing is not obtuse.
One of the notable aspects of it (for me) was that it clearly presents the differences between the Drinfeld-Jimbo version of the quantum group (defined over the ring of power series in an indeterminate) and Jimbo's version of the quantum group (defined over the complex field). The Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum group admits a universal R-matrix while the Jimbo version does not - for the latter, one can define solutions of the matrix Yang-Baxter equation from any integrable finite dimensional representation but this must be done carefully, and this volume presents this problem clearly.
I recommend this volume for graduate students working on quantum groups; I referred to it many times in my Ph.D studies, and also to people working with quantum groups.

This book is one that finds its was to my night stand again and again. The humorus manner in which the essays are written make the most mundane things become interesting. The authors ability to poke fun at his own follies while coping with country life are half the fun of reading it.
Possibly the worst book I've ever read.......2003-10-17
I bought the book because about 2 years ago I began my own project in the Texas Hill Country. My husband and I own some land there, and we've been working on it and enjoying it tremendously.
Mr. Graves' book must be the most boring piece of writing I have ever read, and I'm a serious reader. I don't usually write reviews, but this book was so bad I simply had to respond.
So don't bother reading the book; there's much better stuff out there. And please, do not form a negative opinion about the Texas Hill Country based on this book. The fact that the author has nothing interesting to say about it doesn't mean that there is nothing interesting to talk about. The area is beautiful, and there certainly is much more to it than what you'll find in Mr. Graves' ramblings.
