5 stars and I grade hard.......1999-04-02
I read this book for an odd reason: I was looking for anything written by John Barry, whose absolutely brilliant book, Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America, completely captivated me. He's only the ghost-writer this time, and this book may not be quite as good as his own, but it's still an amazing story of guts and determination. The reader comes away from this book with new respect for the guts and determination to the point of obsessiveness of both medical researchers and patients who participate in test programs. Along the way of a story as suspenseful as any murder mystery, one gets and understanding of immunology, molecular biology, and cancer. Barry's other book may change the way you think. This one won't exactly do thast, but it will open an entire world to you.
A wonderful effort of a scientist, a saint and a philosopher.......1996-11-26
An account of the dedicated, honest and intelligent efforts
to solve one of the most complicated of problems of medical
science today, as described in "The Transformed Cell", makes
one feel confidant that with scientists like Prof. Rosenberg
around us, the solution to such problems is not very far. I'm
only looking for the sequel to this masterpiece with a title
"...And the Solution to it!".

Fascinating Look at Cancer and Scientific Research.......1996-05-18
For those interested in understanding more about cancer and
the vagaries of scientific research and FDA approval, this book provides non-fiction
as interesting as fiction. The book chronicles the journey and
work of the author, a brilliant, driven scientist as he
explores a radical new treament methodology for cancer,
immunotherapy. His incision of the topic into understandable
questions to be answered, and the research process to answer
them makes the book a fascinating mystery. The reader
learns to root for the scientist, his hard-working
team, and the immune cells that fight cancer. Along the way,
you learn about cancer, its causes, and alot of the associated terminology.
Educational and entertaining.

Book Description
This volume is mainly concerned with landform and sediment associations in cold regions, and their transformations over time and space in response to changing environments. Most of the chapters adopt a landscape approach, with the goal of describing, interpreting and comparing regional landscapes. The emphasis here is on landscapes that are formed or constrained by cold conditions. In particular, we look at landform morphology, earth surface processes and sediments reflecting the presence of frost, ice and melt water, and the influence upon landscape of cold-adapted plants and animals. The notion of 'transition' is employed to address the ways in which environmental changes are uniquely expressed through adjustments in landforms and earth surface processes. It is shown that geomorphic transitions have, or tend to, generate their own temporal and spatial shape. They involve mechanisms or patterns of adjustment distinct from, and not readily obvious in, the mere chronology of, say, climate change or tectonics. Examples are discussed from high mountain and glacierized environments, from cold lowlands and coasts. Appropriate theoretical concerns are addressed in relation to the slope stability and extreme mass movement events, paraglacial regimes, changing distributions of permafrost, delta and other cold coastal development.

Book Description
The audience for this thorough overview includes advanced undergraduates and postgraduate researchers in macromolecular sciences who can benefit from more familiarity with the use of X-ray diffraction for obtaining structural information on biological substances, natural and synthetic high polymeric materials.
X-Ray Diffraction by Macromolecules comprises three parts: fundamental, experimental and analytical, and the volume as a whole may serve as an intermediate textbook to bridge the treatments found in primers and specialist works. It presents a thorough treatment of principles and applications, and gives full, practical details on experimental methods and the treatment of results, along with many examples of actual analysis.
Book Description
Adrian Mole faces the same agonies which life sets before most adolescents: troubles with girls, school, parents, and an uncaring world. The difference, though, between young Master Mole and his peers is that this British lad keeps a diary -- an earnest chronicle of longing and disaster that has convulsed more than five million readers since its two-volume initial publication. From teenaged Adrian's obsession with intellectuality after understanding "nearly every word" of a Malcolm Muggeridge broadcast to his anguished adoration of a lovely, mercurial schoolmate, from his view of his parents' constantly creaking relationship to his heartfelt but hilarious attempts at cathartic verse, here is an outrageous triumph of deadpan, and deadly accurate, satire. ABBA, Princess Di's wedding, street punks. Monty Python, the Falklands campaign -- all the cultural pageantry of a keenly observed era marches past the unique perspective of Sue Townsend's brilliant comic creation: A. Mole, the unforgettable lad whose self-absorption only gets funnier as his life becomes more desperate.

Funny!.......2007-01-19
This book is exceptionally good at describing the humiliating experiences that many teenagers go through. It is very funny and quirky, Sue Townsend is a spectacular writer and it is worth the price as well as looking into more Adrian Mole books.
In the Days Before Blogging..........2006-11-20
It's 1982 : Margaret Thatcher is Prime-Minister and Britain is at war with Argentina over a couple of sheep-infested islands in the South Atlantic. Meanwhile, the second instalment of the Mole Diaries is being written by a spotty, fifteen year old intellectual from Leicester.
Adrian proves to be a slightly different character in this book - I suppose he's actually grown up a little. He still has a pretentious streak, he continues to be a touch insensitive at times, he doesn't always see the blindingly obvious and he still (mistakenly) sees himself as an intellectual. However, sometimes, he gets the point all too well and delivers a well-penned (not to mention a well-deserved) kick in the arse. "The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole" covers a traumatic period for Adrian : his O-Levels and CSEs are looming while the significant fallout from his parents affairs have to be dealt with. He's still in love with Pandora, though the path of true love has a few tumbles in store for our spotty Lothario. (He's very keen to see a bit more loving, though he'd happily settle for a glimpse of nipple. Pandora, on the other hand, isn't in quite such a rush). The young couple still help Bert Baxter (a war veteran in his eighties) and Queenie (Bert's recently acquired second wife). Despite Bert's hobbies - drinking, smoking and communism - Bert appears to be one of the closest friends Adrian has. Adrian still has the problem of Barry Kent, the school bully : however, some very surprising progress is made over the course of the year.
Starting in April 1982 and finishing in May 1983, some of the big news stories at the time are touched on - the arrival of breakfast television in the UK, the kidnapping of Shergar and the Falklands War, Overall, it does prove to be a very funny book - though there are a couple of sad moments and a few serious points made. Depressingly, some of the points Adrian makes are just as relevant today as they were over twenty years ago. Listening to Radio Four at one point, Adrian notes that the government has decided to spend a billion pounds on war equipment. He then mentions that one of his school's science laboratories is being closed down because it can't afford to employ a new teacher. (Blair is throwing money at the Iraq War having conveniently forgotten al about "education, education, education"). Then Adrian's Irish neighbour, Mr O'Leary, returns to Ireland to vote in the Irish General Election. On his way back to Leicester, however, Mr O'Leary is detained at the East Midlands Airport on being suspicion of being a terrorist. (Admittedly, today the focus has shifted a different group). Later, when a General Election is called in the UK, one of the candidates mentioned is Duncan McIntosh. A member of the "Send `Em Back Where They Came From Party", Mr McIntosh advocates compulsory repatriation of people with black, brown and yellow skin, the Irish, the Welsh, the Scottish and all those with Norman blood. (With all the recent hysteria about immigrants, Mr McIntosh's party would probably have a good shout at government). Well worth reading, and highly recommended.
One of my favorite books when I was a teenager.......2006-11-19
This book was loved by my classmates and I in Malaysia. I have read it about 5 times over the years, and still laugh out loud each time! You have to read it for yourself to see why it is so well-loved. Adrian Mole is a type of teenager in each of us. Not only is this book hilarious, but the number of plots weaving simultaneously through the whole book is ingenious. Every character introduced has a purpose.
I now understand why this series was so popular..........2006-10-24
Well, having stumbled on the last book in the series (AD and the Weapons of Mass Destruction) and thoroughly enjoying it, I just had to go back and start at the beginning of the Adrian Mole series. The Adrian Mole Diaries : The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 : The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole by Sue Townsend is a combination volume of the two titles, and I now understand a bit more why this was apparently all the rage in England in the '80s.
It's impossible to read this without relating to at least *some* aspect of Mole's life and thought patterns. Whether it's his literary aspirations (not shared by much of anyone else), his preoccupation with Pandora (the love of his life), or all the "spots" on his face, you realize you've had the same feelings, complete with melodramatic accompaniment. Watching his parents go through separate affairs while Adrian is oblivious to what's really happening is painfully funny, and it made me wonder how much *I* was unaware of around adults growing up. This is really "reality TV" before there was such a thing...
In some ways, I wish I had read this before the last one, as I think I would have understood a lot more about his personality and background. But better late than never, and now I have some more catching up to do...
