Customer Reviews:
Interactions between cell surfaces allow embryo to develop.......2000-11-26
Analytic and innovative, yet fairly easy to read, book on the place-dependent interactions of cell surfaces with other cell surfaces that regulate the processes of embryological development in metazoans (ie, animals).
Heavy going, big payoff.......2000-05-09
Edelman's Topobiology provides an excellent introduction to the field of molecular embryology. In the book you will be introduced to CAMs (cell adhesion molecules), SAMs (substrate adhesion molecules), and CJMs (cell junction molecules) that are produced and used by the body to keep itself organized and literally stuck together as it develops and grows. The processes of development and growth are extremely complex, and involve interactions among many different entities in the body. As the header suggests, this book is not an easy read; it presents abstract concepts, and the author uses extremely complex sentence constructions to tell his story. This is not a book for the faint of heart, it is written with the professional biologist in mind.
If you have the strength and the courage, I suggest that you give this book a try
P.S. I am the "reader" from Manchester College in the previous review -- I didn't get my name on that one though.
Thick going, but worth the effort.......2000-02-05

Book Description
Human activity is undeniably affecting the rates of change in many parts of the global system. How this global change develops into the future is vitally important, but modeling these changes requires a complex, integrated assessment of a wide range of disciplines in science and social science. This book describes the structure, assumptions, philosophy and results of an advanced global integrated assessment model: TARGETS. For a number of future directions selected on the basis of divergent cultural perspectives, the model charts global implications in terms of population and health, energy, land- and water-use and biogeochemical cycles. This integrated assessment approach has led to innovative fresh insights into global change. The book will help policymakers formulate the strategies required for a sustainable global future.
Book Description
This complete introduction to plasma physics and controlled fusion by one of the pioneering scientists in this expanding field offers both a simple and intuitive discussion of the basic concepts of this subject and an insight into the challenging problems of current research. In a wholly lucid manner the work covers single-particle motions, fluid equations for plasmas, wave motions, diffusion and resistivity, Landau damping, plasma instabilities and nonlinear problems. For students, this outstanding text offers a painless introduction to this important field; for teachers, a large collection of problems; and for researchers, a concise review of the fundamentals as well as original treatments of a number of topics never before explained so clearly. This revised edition contains new material on kinetic effects, including Bernstein waves and the plasma dispersion function, and on nonlinear wave equations and solitons.

Better than Bittencourt........2007-07-04
Good solid introduction to plasma physics. Fairly general introduction geared towards advanced undergraduates and grad students. There are better books which concentrate on applications, both of which I own. Sturrock for geophysical and earth plasma physics and Kulsrud for astrophysics.
Plasma physicists do it with confinement.......2007-02-10
I took an intro to plasma physics class using this book at the undergraduate level - and this book was perfect. It has a good blend of experimental evidence, theory, and math. The derivations are really good, you can follow along in the margins. The pictures are clear and beautiful, the page layout easy on the eyes. This is not a graduate text, but aimed at the advanced undergrad level. You should already know calculus, complex analysis, EM, and linear algebra before learning this material.
Clearly and simplified.......2007-01-24
The texts of this book are not long, but are very clear in physics concepts and are simplied:
1.All important math steps to prove the physics are mentioned(not released to the reader) in simplied way so that readers can know clearly both the math steps and physics meanings without being buffered by complecated math steps.
2.The author mentioned clearly the physics meaning of any equation.
I am a bachalor of physics, such kind of textbook(clear and simple and friendly) I had had only two:textbook named "Introduction to Electrodynamic" and "Introduction to Quantum Mechanics" written by famous author,Mr. Grify.
As a result,I think it is a very good textbook,at least for students who start to learn plamsa physics.
Really not a graduate text.......2007-01-04
I picked up this book for my graduate plasma 1 class alongside Goldston's book. The material is geared towards undergrads and would have been great had I picked up the book two years ago. Instead I found that I hardly opened Chen and stuck with Goldston or course notes. So if you are an undergrad or someone who is just generally interested in plasma physics this is probably what you should be buying. If you are a grad student and don't have it already then there is a decent chance that if you buy this book all you will get out of it is a warm feeling in your heart from knowing that you have the same book on your shelf that every other plasma physicist has.
It Just Keeps Coming in Handy.......2005-10-18
I first bought this text for an undergraduate course in plasmas, and I liked it then -- Chen's first few chapters will get you through the basics without any undue suffering (you'll hurt because the subject can be difficult, not because the text is unclear.) After spending a few months on my shelf, it reappeared for some research I was doing that required me to get comfortable with a few different types of plasma waves. Now Chen has come back into my life -- I'm taking a graduate course in kinetic theory of plasmas, and I find myself opening up this book on a daily basis to figure something out. This textbook has served me well, and if you're doing work (coursework or research) in the plasmas field, it will likely serve you well, too. The first four or five chapters are written so that a senior-level physics undergrad can understand them, so you get a nice conceptual grasp of the subject (as well as good reference material on more advanced topics.)
One point: I wouldn't recommend buying this as a "teach yourself plasma physics on a desert island" kind of book. If you can find someone who knows the subject, though, Chen will help you to learn a lot after they've explained a few basic points.
Basic subjects covered are:
Orbit theory (single particle motion, adiabatic invariants)
Fluid approximation
Plasma waves (O, X, R, L, acoustic, and many others)
Diffusion and resistivity
Equilibrium/stability issues
Kinetic theory
Assorted non-linear effects

Book Description
Resulting from ongoing, international research into fusion processes, the International Tokamak Experimental Reactor (ITER) is a major step in the quest for a new energy source. The first graduate-level text to cover the details of ITER, Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics introduces various aspects and issues of recent fusion research activities through the shortest access path. The distinguished author breaks down the topic by first dealing with fusion and then concentrating on the more complex subject of plasma physics. The book begins with the basics of controlled fusion research, followed by discussions on tokamaks, reversed field pinch (RFP), stellarators, and mirrors. The text then explores ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities, resistive instabilities, neoclassical tearing mode, resistive wall mode, the Boltzmann equation, the Vlasov equation, and Landau damping. After covering dielectric tensors of cold and hot plasmas, the author discusses the physical mechanisms of wave heating and noninductive current drive. The book concludes with an examination of the challenging issues of plasma transport by turbulence, such as magnetic fluctuation and zonal flow. Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics clearly and thoroughly promotes intuitive understanding of the developments of the principal fusion programs and the relevant fundamental and advanced plasma physics associated with each program.

Book Description
The primary objectives of this book are, firstly, to present the essential theoretical background needed to understand recent fusion research and, secondly, to describe the current status of fusion research for graduate students and senior undergraduates. It will also serve as a useful reference for scientists and engineers working in the related fields. In Part I, Plasma Physics, the author explains the basics of magneto-hydrodynamics and kinetic theory in a simple and compact way and, at the same time, covers important new topics for fusion studies such as the ballooning representation, instabilities driven by energetic particles, and various plasma models for computer simulations. Part II, Controlled Nuclear Fusion, attempts to review the "big picture" in fusion research. Mathematical derivations are comprehensively explained to better enable readers to later concentrate on the physics. All important phenomena and technologies are addressed, with a particular emphasis on the topics of most concern in current research.

Customer Reviews:
You Don't Need to Appreciate Music to Appreciate This Book.......2006-06-09
In his latest novel, Bill Scheft (the human joke writing machine who brought you The Best of the Show and David Letterman's monologue for many years) manages to outdo himself.
Time Won't Let Me chronicles the escapades of the former members of The Truants. As a high school band who released 500 copies of one album, their 15 minutes of fame is clearly over. But when they find our their album went for $10,000 on eBay, they're coaxed into reuniting for a big score and a bigger show at their high school reunion. One small problem -- they can't stand each other.
The characterizations are compelling, memorable and you'll recognize the personalities from the band in your own life. You'll understand why the Beatles and the Eagles had to break up after reading this book. Just thinking about the character Pressure Chief still makes me laugh out loud. Read this book and you'll never look at Equal the same way again. If you don't enjoy this book, you need to find a tall, tall building.
If you've ever been in a band, if you've ever known someone in a band, or if you've ever listened to a band, you owe it to yourself to get this book. You won't be able to put it down. Bill's writing is relentlessly great, funny and entertaining.
Now enjoy The Lemon Pipers.
On the mark.......2006-06-04
I was chuckling and laughing constantly as I enjoyed this book. I finished this in three sittings, four days. I have been in and out of bands for about 40 years, starting in high school, and I loved all the nuances Bill brought to this story. He develops the characters beautifully and I guarantee you will never feel let down or set up by this tale. If you have EVER been in a band, had a brother or sister in a band, or were involved someway in a band, you will identify with this book. But don't pass this by if you had nothing to do with a band - I was pleasantly surprised by several of the twists and turns the book took, but again I must reiterate I was not let down or disappointed by any of the unexpected story lines that Bill developed. Every now and then I was reading something and said to myself, "Oh yeah and I can see that he will eventually ..." or "I bet this will play out like this..." and was pleasantly surprised that Sheft didn't take the "easy way" or "obvious choice". This is truly a well-written book and I have contacted all my music buddies and recommended it.
Review of book shipment/receipt.......2006-05-21
Book arrived as promised, perfect shape, will order again no question!
I really enjoyed this book.......2006-04-22
I first heard about the Author on the "Bob & Tom Show" and based on his interview I purchased the book. I found it to be well written and very funny at times. This is a book which I will let my friends borrow as long as they purchase his other book and let me read it when they are finished with it. (Hey I am frugal).
Do yourself a favor and buy this book. The author would like to see this made into a movie so I hope Hollywood will do it justice.
Now let's see John Irving write a comedy monologue.......2006-03-19
Those familiar with the Bill Scheft's previous work (writing jokes for David Letterman and Sports Illustrated) won't be surprised to find themselves smiling and laughing as they read "Time Won't Let Me". But even those who enjoyed the author's first novel ("The Ringer") are likely be pleasantly surprised at the number and depth of the characters he's created this time around.
The five Truants (a mid-1960's prep school band) begin the book considerably older, but little (if any) wiser then they were as teen-agers, unable to connect successfully with their respective families, or one another, and (for the most part) unable to afford the toys generally prescribed for midlife crisis. Thrown together in the pursuit of what may be an illusion as their 30th Reunion approaches, they and those around them manage to find something of even greater value.
