The best par t of Cracker Jacks is the prize inside...........2005-03-22
I finally had a chance to crack open the surprise inside my copy of the Quake Handbook (two CD-ROMs at the back of PART B and another in Part A). And what a surprise!!! If I printed out all of the material packed into these the 3 included CD-ROMs, you could fill your departmental library.
Useful and rare. The CDs contain something for anyone and everyone. The contents are so voluminous, I'm thankful they had the good sense to index the contents and include this on the CD as a searchable database via Adobe PDF. So, when your colleague down the hall asks you to help him locate an odd reference, equation, or image, you should show him/her your hefty pair. Together the paired volumes and the contents of the 3 CD-ROMS are a seismological librarian's dream, including many rare and out-of-print classics. Truly a digital treasure chest of authoritative content neatly packaged. Frankly, I'm surprised L-severe did not charge extra for the CD content, as the information content is a tiny fraction of an equivalent journal subscription. I love it when they put a free toy inside.

Book Description
Silicon, the basic material for a multibillion-dollar industry, is the most widely researched and applied semiconductor, and its surfaces are the most thoroughly studied of all semiconductor surfaces. Silicon Surfaces and Formation of Interfaces may be used as an introduction to graduate-level physics and chemical physics. Moreover, it gives a specialized and comprehensive description of the most common faces of silicon crystals as well as their interaction with adsorbates and overlayers. This knowledge is presented in a systematic and easy-to-follow way. Discussion of each system is preceded by a brief overview which categorizes the features and physical mechanisms before the details are presented. The literature is easily available, and the references are numerous and organized in tables, allowing a search without the need to browse through the text.
Though this volume focuses on a scientific understanding of physics on the atomistic and mesoscopic levels, it also highlights existing and potential links between basic research in surface science and applications in the silicon industry. It will be valuable to anyone writing a paper, thesis, or proposal in the field of silicon surfaces.

Book Description
This book presents a state-of-the-art understanding of semiconductor-electrolyte interfaces. It provides a detailed study of semiconductor-electrolyte interfacial effects, focusing on the physical and electrochemical foundations that affect surface charge, capacitance, conductance, quantum effects, and other properties, both from the point of view of theoretical modeling and metrology. The wet-dry interface, where solid-state devices may be in contact with electrolyte solutions, is of growing interest and importance. This is because such interfaces will be a key part of hydrogen energy and solar cells, and of sensors that would have wide applications in medicine, genomics, environmental science, and bioterrorism prevention.
The field effect presented here by Pavel Konorov, Adil Yafyasov, and Vladislav Bogevolnov is a new method, one that allows investigation of the physical properties of semiconductor and superconductor surfaces. Before the development of this method, it was impossible to test these surfaces at room temperature. The behavior of electrodes in electrolytes under such realistic conduction conditions has been a major problem for the technical realization of systems that perform measurements in wet environments. This book also describes some material properties that were unknown before the development of the field effect method.
This book will be of great interest to students and engineers working in semiconductor surface physics, electrochemistry, and micro- and nanoelectronics.

Book Description
At present, there is an increasing interest in the prediction of properties of classical and new materials such as substitutional alloys, their surfaces, and metallic or semiconductor multilayers. A detailed understanding based on a microscopic, parameter-free approach is thus of the utmost importance for future developments in solid state physics and materials science. The purpose of this book is to provide this understanding.
Electronic Structure of Disordered Alloys, Surfaces and Interfaces consists of two major parts. The first explores the theoretical background while the second is devoted to applications. Researchers in solid state theory, surface science and computational materials research will benefit from the book's comprehensive treatment while graduate students will find this text a suitable introduction to these topics.

Product Description
Volume IX will be devoted to new materials (nanotubes, quantum dots) and new techniques (synchrotron radiation scattering and cavity confined scattering. In the past five years Raman and Brillouin scattering have taken a place among the most important research and characterization methods for carbon nanotubes. It is beginning to be used for other nanotube materials. It is also being used in the investigation of semiconductor quantum dots, in particular collections of them which order self-assemble) automatically as two-dimensional lattices. Among the novel techniques discussed in this volume are those which use synchrotron radiation as light source. Improvements in the intensity and beam quality of modern synchrotron sources fully dedicated to spectroscopic work have made possible their use as sources for light scattering spectroscopy. In the case of scattering by phonons, new methods of beam monochromatization have allowed resolutions better than 10 wave numbers, a fact which has lead to phonon dispersion measurements throughout the whole Brillouin zone. This development has been applied to the measurement of phonon dispersion relations in very small samples (of the order of 1 cubic mm) which cannot be investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Also, the use of resonant Raman scattering by electronic excitations has allowed the determination of electronic energy bands in a number of materials. Another approach to Raman spectroscopy is to enhance its efficiency by using resonant cavities which are part of the sample. Electromagnetic resonances have been already used for some time. More recently, they have been combined with acoustic resonances to obtain large enhancements in Raman efficiencies.

Book Description
The authors illustrate the basic physics and materials science of conjugated polymers and their interfaces, particularly, but not exclusively, as they are applied to polymer-based light emitting diodes. The approach is to describe the basic physical and associated chemical principles that apply to these materials, which in many instances are different from those that apply to their inorganic counterparts. The main aim of the authors is to highlight specific issues and properties of polymer surfaces and interfaces that are relevant in the context of the emerging field of polymer-based electronics in general, and polymer-based light emitting diodes in particular. Both theoretical and experimental methods used in the study of these systems are discussed. This book will be of interest to graduate students and research workers in departments of physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and materials sciences studying polymer surfaces and interfaces and their application in polymer-based electronics.

Book Description
Surfaces and interfaces play an increasingly important role in today's solid state devices. In this book the reader is introduced, in a didactic manner, to the essential theoretical aspects of the atomic and electronic structure of surfaces and interfaces. The book does not pretend to give a complete overview of contemporary problems and methods. Instead, the authors strive to provide simple but qualitatively useful arguments that apply to a wide variety of cases. The emphasis of the book is on semiconductor surfaces and interfaces but it also includes a thorough treatment of transition metals, a general discussion of phonon dispersion curves, and examples of large computational calculations. The exercises accompanying every chapter will be of great benefit to the student.

You might think that a writer best-known for novelizing the movie "E.T." would find a satire on the book publishing industry hitting a bit close to home, but William Kotzwinkle seems quite comfortable with the task in this comic fable. In Kotzwinkle's merry send-up, the author of the hit novel "Desire and Destiny" is a bear, a real bear, who after finding the manuscript under a spruce tree and attaching his nom de plume, Hal Jam, becomes rich and famous overnight. Obtuse editors, star-hound agents, and a right-wing televangelist and Presidential candidate all warm to Hal's warm, bearish honesty without bothering to read his book--or to notice that he's an animal, for that matter. It's an old gag turned by a canny author to amusing, if not always compelling, purposes.
Book Description
William Kotzwinkle, the esteemed author of The Fan Man and E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, is in top comic form in this outrageous and uproarious parable featring Hal Jam-a big black bear who finds a manuscript under a tree in the Maine woods, dons a suit and a tie, and heads off to the big city to seek his fame and fortune. What follows is a riotous magical romp with the buoyant Hal Jam as he leaves the quiet, nurturing world of the forest for the glittering and corrupt world of humans. New York and Hollywood and all that lies between serve as an expansive palette for Kotzwinkle's wickedly funny satiric brush. The Bear Went Over the Mountain skewers our age's obsession with money and fame in a delicious bedtime story for grown-ups.
Customer Reviews:
not funny at all.......2006-12-08
I am amazed that this book got 4 1/2 stars. I picked it up in a used book store for $1 because the cover intrigued me and the plot summary was fairly interesting. It is not worth more than a $1. Lame, lame, lame.
It's a fairy tale so the fact that no one, not even the bear's lover, realizes he is a bear is passable. What makes no sense, and this happens incredibly often in the book, is the bear one moment will, for example, at the mention of England, (unprompted) recall Princess Dianna and on the same page doesn't have the mental capacity to pick between two choices presented to him. He says 'honey' (get it-because he is a bear and bears like honey -har,har,har) or another word that makes absolutely no sense in the context of the question. You can't have it both ways. Either the bear has the dexterity to engage in normal conversations with humans or he is a moron. Pick one. It is absolutely maddening that the bear character switches personalities back and forth at an alarming rate.
And I did not laugh once. If you enjoy the humor found in TV shows like "Full House" or "Reba", than this book is for you.
A terrible gift, but a funny book.......2006-01-23
So.... my grandma gave me this book for Christmas. Both she and one of her friends had read it, so she suggested I read it. That was not the wisest of decisions. MANY parts of this book were enormously funny, but some parts were just too inappropriate for my age level. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book a lot, but I wouldn't have bought it if I had known what it talked about. I'm used to cuss words and I understand everything that happened, it's just many parts were too much. I believe this would be a good book for adults, not me. Thanks grandma, but maybe get me a book from my age level next time.
One of the funniest books I've ever read.......2005-10-24
That's all I have to say about it, except I've lent this book far and wide to a diverse audienceof friends and family, in terms of age and sense of humor. Every one thought it was a scream and just adored it.
WONDERFUL.......2005-10-08
What a great and fun book--a very fast read and makes me appreciate bears...
The funniest book on the planet.......2005-08-12
Suspend all belief in reality and read this book just for the fun of it. It remains one of my favorites to re-read and to give as a gift. Sometimes you just need to laugh out loud and "The Bear Went Over The Mountain: A Novel" will allow you that joy.
