Book Description
The Salt House is a beautifully observed and written memoir of a long summer's stay on the back shore of Cape Cod. Each chapter is like a prose poem, shedding increasing light on the challenge of finding "home" without the illusion of permanence, a quest based not on ownership but on affinity and familiarity with an area and its people. Cynthia Huntington expands her theme through images of the landscape, the shack, the new marriage.
The shack, named "Euphoria," is built as a house set on stilts above the sand, to take the wind under it. Only a partial shelter, it is inhabited for only one season a year, yet it endures. The outer cape has the feel of a place for migrants and drifters -- for birds and other wildlife, and for people such as artists, fishermen, and coast guardsmen. A place where "year-round" often means several addresses. Similarly, her narrative describes improvised, fragile beginnings: a new marriage, learning to be at home in the world, becoming intimate with the natural world, without the necessity of settling down. The Salt House shares a world that is less natural history or memoir than it is neighborhood exploration -- the process of learning a place and becoming native to it.

Tangy and Alive.......2005-09-19
After meeting Cynthia at a writers' program, and finding her to be a lovely person, I decided to read her account of a summer on Cape Cod. I've always longed for such an escapade myself, so this was a vicarious experience of sorts.
"The Sand House" is a joyous and often times humorous telling of the author's days in a small cottage near the Atlantic shoreline. The book focuses on the beauty of her surroundings--the plants, the wildlife, the birds--and on the realities of life in a constricted space with a loved one. The book's title is evocative, tangy and alive, romantic yet earthy. It suits Cynthia's writing perfectly. She is a poet of prose. Her words linger and dance, like cool breezes over the surf. She conjures wonderful images and ideas. She is abstract in her thinking, yet she grabs intangible concepts and wraps them in the sweaty language which humans understand.
If you're looking for quick reading and plot-driven stories, look elsewhere. If, however, you long for tales of lazy summer days told in lyrical language, "The Salt House" is not to be missed.
This is a classic........2002-09-13
This book is destined to become a classic not only in the rich field of Cape Cod writing but in nature and memoir in general. Huntington's prose is simple and pure, evoking not only the outer landscape, but the inner landscape of a woman's mind. What a pleasure it is to be in a mind so generous, open, and curious about the world! This is a book I will read over and over.
Too perfumy........2001-12-01
You can tell that the author is also a poet because this book is very, very perfumy. Very, very detailed. A whole chapter almost on the trails that a sea gull makes. Beautifully written but very little context. Should have instead been made into a 5 page short story. Would love to meet this person and be friends with her though. She would make a great next door neighbor it seems! :) If you like Barbara Kingsolver style writing you will probably love this book but if you prefer the Memoir style writing of Joan Anderson of A Year by the Sea (also taking place on Cape Cod) this isn't the book for you.
I was inspired!.......2001-02-25
This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I have been on a nonfiction kick for a few months. As a college student I don't often have much time to devote to "reading for pleasure" but since I'm on vacation I've had a little time. Reading this book in February brought me right back to June and July. It's descriptions were wonderful and reminded me why I love the beach. The author's reflections on her relationships seem to echo my own feelings that I can't express. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the beach and enjoys being there by themself or with a loved one!
Breathtaking. Profound........2001-02-18
I cannot believe how wonderful this book is. I've read it twice, and it's even more amazing the second time around. This is one of those books you'll want to revisit again and again. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Huntington's work.

Book Description
Once we thought the universe was filled with shining stars, dust, planets, and galaxies. We now know that more than 98 percent of all matter in the universe is dark. It emits absolutely nothing yet bends space and time; keeps stars speeding around galaxies; and determines the fate of the universe.
But dark matter is only part of the story. Scientists have recently discovered that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, driven by a mysterious commodity called dark energy. Depending on what dark matter and energy happen to be, our seemingly quiet universe could end its days in a Big Rip, tearing itself apart, or a Big Crunch, collapsing down to a universe the size of nothing, ready to be reincarnated in a Big Bang once again.
For the general reader and armchair astronomer alike, Iain Nicolson's fascinating account shows how our ideas about the nature and the content of the universe have developed. He highlights key discoveries, explains underlying concepts, and examines current thinking on dark matter and dark energy. He describes techniques that astronomers use to explore the remote recesses of the cosmos in their quest to understand its composition, evolution, and ultimate fate.
Customer Reviews:
A superb popular book about cosmology.......2007-09-02
Iain Nicolson has done a wonderful job of presenting many of the facts and hypotheses about cosmology to the layman (and to the interested high school student).
The book starts with some fundamentals of astronomy. We then proceed to a discussion of Big Bang cosmology. And we learn all about the Hubble expansion, as well as observed evolution of the visible universe, comparison of the time since the Big Bang to the lifetimes of the oldest stars. In addition, we're told about Big Bang nucleosynthesis (this is one topic I would have wanted to see discussed in more detail), and evidence of the Big Bang from the cosmic microwave background.
After this, we learn about the existence of dark matter in spiral galaxies and galaxy clusters. But what's the dark matter made of? One possibility is "MACHOs," (MAssive Compact Halo Objects). However, the author explains that MACHOs alone can not account for the dark matter in our own galaxy, much less for the dark matter elsewhere.
It turns out that we need to look for non-baryonic sources of dark matter. And that means "WIMPs," (Weakly-Interacting Massive Particles). It also means wondering about whether dark matter is all that cold.
Next, we look at an interesting hypothesis: maybe Newtonian gravitation breaks down at high accelerations! Most physicists think this idea is wrong, and so far (as this book shows), the evidence for it is not all that favorable.
That brings us back to looking for those WIMPs. And we see some of the ideas for detecting them including Super-Kamiokande (a water-based neutrino detector) and atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes.
Nicolson's next topic is the inflationary model of cosmic expansion. And there is a section on the growth of cosmic microwave background density fluctuations, including results from the BOOMERanG balloon experiments and the WMAP mission.
Now comes something relatively new and exciting. In the past ten years, we've seen that data from supernovae indicate that the expansion of our universe is accelerating. And that leads to a search for the driver of this expansion, which most folks call "dark energy." That in turn brings up questions about whether there needs to be a "multiverse" to explain what otherwise would be an unusual set of coincidences about the properties of our own visible universe. In addition, it means questions about the history of dark energy in our own universe. And there is a discussion of possible outcomes: eternal accelerating expansion (where gravity loses), a "Big Crunch," (where gravity wins) or a "Big Rip," (where the repulsive force destroys everything).
I highly recommend this book.
A fascinating expose.......2007-06-10
DARK SIDE OF THE UNIVERSE: DARK MATTER, DARK ENERGY, AND THE FATE OF THE COSMOS is a pick not just for college-level science collections strong in astronomy, but for the general-interest lending library catering to non-scientist readers. It offers up a history and survey of how ideas about nature and the universe have developed, using key discoveries and scientific rationale to consider the evolution of theories on dark matter and describing how astronomers explore the remote cosmos to gain evidence supporting or refuting these theories. Any with an interest beyond the solar system will find this a fascinating expose, packed with color astronomy photos throughout.
An enlightening book about some dark subjects.......2007-05-05
We used to believe that the entire universe consisted of the kind of matter and energy that we were familiar with in our daily lives, but when astronomers actually tried to calculate the actual mass of the universe, they found that there was not enough observable mass to account for all the observed gravitational effects. How to account for this discrepancy? Dark matter! Dark matter? But what exactly is this stuff? Physicists have postulated several different forms of dark matter, with such whimsical acronyms as MACHOs (massive compact halo objects) and WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles). Astronomers and physicists continue to debate the nature of dark matter, and Iain Nicolson brings us the debate and the science and people behind it in "Dark Side of the Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and the Fate of the Cosmos".
While dark matter seemed to offer a stopgap solution to missing matter, it came up short in explaining the observed accelerating expansion of the universe. Such an acceleration requires a nearly flat universe with a mass+energy density equal to a certain critical density. Even with dark matter the density of the known universe is roughly one-quarter the critical density, implying the existence of an additional form or forms of as-yet-unknown energy, i.e. dark energy.
Iain Nicolson explores all these ideas and more in a compelling narrative that is accessible to the intelligent lay reader without omitting important details. More knowledgeable readers will find some familiar material, but Nicolson brings his considerable experience and insight to the subject so that the familiar becomes wondrously new again and even the most up-to-date reader finishes the book with a greater understanding and appreciation for both the people and the science exploring some of the biggest questions known to humankind.

"One with a Shepherd" is a wealth of God's wisdom and grace for the wife of a man in ministry. It is biblical, practical and personal. Whether one has been a pastor's wife for some time, or is just starting out, this book will serve as a faithful friend in equipping and encouraging the minister's wife in her quest to exalt Christ and have joy in the journey.

Mary has so much to offer.......2006-09-08
If you are considering a life of ministry, or if you are married to a pastor and would like to have ready access to the wisdom of a woman who has spent many years in ministry, Mary Somerville's book, One with a Shepherd: The Tears and Triumphs of a Ministry Wife, is a very helpful and encouraging work. The 304 pages that make it up are worth their weight in gold. She has served as a pastor's wife for over three decades. Her and her husband, Bob, have led two churches, one in New Jersey, the other in California.
Covering just about every major aspect of ministry, One with a Shepherd is broken up into sixteen chapters, along with four appendices. Toward the end the author provides a valuable reading list on "Spiritual Growth," "Marriage," "Childrearing," "Home Management," "Discipling/Counseling," and every list is filled with very trustworthy authors. Mary writes on such subjects as the importance for pastors' wives to understand their role in ministry (Chapter 1), coping with loneliness (Chapter 6), how to deal with rebellious children (Chapter 10), and the importance of discipling other women (Chapter 14).
One of the topics that grabbed my attention most was what she wrote about pastors' wives defining their role in the church, so as not to fall into the trap of having to live up to the unbiblical expectations of others (a notorious problem in churches). For example, she writes, "If you want to be free from the burden of false guilt, you should first determine if you have yielded to non-biblical expectations." And further, "Realize too that we do not answer to everyone else; we answer to God alone for our actions...This means turning a deaf ear to the complaints and criticisms that are ungrounded" (p. 3). Another area Mary deals with that caught my attention is an issue that is seldom treated in books on ministry: the pain inflicted by members of the church. She says: "We suffer from people deserting us by changing churches. At other times they hurt us by staying in the church and attacking us with criticism, complaints, and gossip. Finally they may completely reject our ministry and us. We are tempted to give up in despair, but God actually wants to use these hurts that people inflict to strengthen us" (p. 64).
The wisdom, insight, and experience of the author make this a valuable resource for any pastor's wife, and any woman whose husband is preparing for ministry. Discussing the trials and tribulations of leading a church while in seminary would have better prepared me for ministry. And my wife would have been better prepared for our work if she'd had a book like this early on. This really is a tremendous work. Every pastor's wife--and every woman who is planning on becoming a pastor's wife--should read it. While many people may want to write a book, there are some that can only be written through experience. This is that type of book. Mary Somerville has so much to offer that any reader can quickly tell she is not simply passing on information, but passing on her life experiences, those that are common to the wife of any pastor. I wish there was a similar work for pastors. - Ray Hammond, Christian Book Previews.com

Couldn't Put It Down.......2005-07-10
At first, I really didn't like this book, but I found I couldn't put it down. The more I read, the more I appreciated it. Now I recommend it to all of my seminary wife friends who are married to future pastors. The author shares so much practical experience , I appreciated her desire to share her viewpoint on her role as a pastor's wife.
Some of my favorite parts: "Sorting the Laundry" Mrs. Dobson states, "Working through the responsibilities and commitments of our lives determine who and what comes first is a little like sorting the laundry: you wash the whites and colors seperately, but when you dress, you combine the colors with whites." And also, "No person is pain -free or trouble-free. If we were we could not be effective ministers." And finally, she shares and amazing section on "Caring for My Body" - I appreciate the new insights she shares on caring for the Physical well-being of our bodies (the vessels God uses for His work) with a biblical perspective!!
inside look and humorous.......2000-04-08
This book was revealing in the sense that I had no idea how congregations demand things of the clergy. L. Dobson is humorous in her writing and appears to have an intelligent attitude to being a pastors wife. The many anecdotes are as funny as most pulpiteers.

Ingeborg Bullivant decides spontaneously to join a tour to Lucerne-and returns engaged. Yet her new life as a rural Prussian pastor's wife restricts her as much as her old; and when the dashing artist Ingram appears, musing about wondrous Italy, wanderlust tempts her a second time. Von Arnim's accomplished and comic novel is based on her own first marriage and life in provincial Germany at the turn of the century.
Customer Reviews:
Von Arnim's witty portrayal of fin-de-siecle married life........1998-07-27
This is one of Von Arnim's very best novels, full of surprising wit and sometimes caustic criticism of the lonely existence of an intelligent British woman in a turn-of-the-century aristocratic German household. In particular, the childbirth scenes are chilling, and reminiscent of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wallpaper, though Von Arnim typically treats the topic with more humor. The ending is as brilliant as those of her contemporary Edith Wharton.

Pain and future hope.......2007-08-26
Sabina Wurmbrand lived an incredible and at times incredibly hard life. This is the story of a Rumanian woman facing persecution and her own sinful human nature by relying on her deep faith. I found the autobiography dark yet uplifting. Christian readers who want to read only happy "sugar-coated" books may want to avoid this one but then again maybe they should read it because it shows how high a price keeping the faith sometimes requires. People who still believe Communism was a positive thing should read this book, even many communists suffered under their own system. Overall, a great book!
This book is real history; it should be read!.......2007-04-09
I traveled in Romania with our church distributing Bibles in 1993, so that country has long been in my heart. I found the church in Romania to be alive and strong, and its members knew so much that we, in our comfortable churches in America have never learned-how to really love and trust God. The people had little in the way of life's comforts in 1993- my middle-class life in America in comparison was very rich; the orphans I visited in a boys home haunted me until I adopted from Kazakh and now from Latvian orphanages, but I will never forget them. This book will rock you out of complacency, and cure you, at least temporarily, of feeling sorry for yourself or blaming God for not doing what you want Him to do for you. God bless the Romanian Christians. Jacqueline Smith
This book changed my life........2003-03-05
When I was 14, I met Sabina Wurmbrand when she and her husband came to my church. There were flocks of people around but she looked through them and came to me and smiled her wonderful sweet smile and said "You will be a wonderful woman of God." Her book is just like that. It breaks through the crowd and clamor of life and brings you to a place where God is personal and real. The story is vivid in its detail of what she and the other women experienced and how they dealt with them. It is the story of a miraculous life and worth reading!

Things that make you go...hmm!.......2002-10-16
This book is definently r-e-a-l! Barbara hits it hard on the real aspects of what it's like to love a man so much, but yet be angry with him as well because of his actions.
I never attended this church, but had relatives who did. This book opened my eyes of the pain and hurt they went through. It also gave me a hope, joy, and faith that no matter what happens in life God is always faithful to His kids. They experienced some radical things at Community Chapel & Bible Training Center. You can definently learn some good things of how to and how not to do things. Learn, learn, learn...grow, that's what it's all about.
The Truth Has Set Me Free!.......2002-06-09
This is a book of inspiration and hope. Barbara's testimony of her life has caused me to desire a closer relationship with the Lord. Her revealing words concerning her life, her marriage, her ministry, and the church have given me a new hunger for holiness in my own life. I admire her courage to tell about these events with honesty and humility as she had witnessed them. My heart broke for her and the tears fell, as I realized all she had so graciously gone through without the members of the church being aware of her trials and pain. I laughed with joy at the many marvelous testimonies of healing and deliverance. Barbara gives us an exciting, but sometimes agonizing, journey through the history of "The Chapel", and the work that God so marvelously did in the lifes of so many.

It was 5:30 am, and I was standing in front of my bathroom mirror. The past few months had been the most devastating in my life. How could our flock that we loved so much turn their backs on us? Just as it had happened countless times before and during many sleepless nights, those old conversations and scenes began to replay over and over in my mind. Voices; harsh and accusing seemed to drown out the voice of my Father. I had spent day after day in bookstores pouring over the shelves looking for anything that would hold the key to end my pain. "Lord, why can't I find a book that will help me?" But as I stared into the mirror that dreary December morning something frightening happened. God allowed me to see my face just as He saw it: old, wrinkled, bitter and angry. I seemed to age 60 years in a single moment. I jumped back in surprise, shrieking at what I saw. Then I finally heard His voice: "My daughter, I kept you from finding it...because you are going to write it."
