This book deals with analytic problems related to some developments and generalizations of the Boltzmann equation toward the modeling and qualitative analysis of large systems that are of interest in applied sciences. These generalizations are documented in the various surveys edited by Bellomo and Pulvirenti with reference to models of granular media, traffic flow, mathematical biology, communication networks, and coagulation models.

The above literature motivates applied mathematicians to study the Cauchy problem and to develop an asymptotic analysis for models regarded as developments of the Boltzmann equation. This book aims to initiate the research plan by the analyzing afore mentioned analysis problems.

The first generalization dealt with refers to the averaged Boltzmann equation, which is obtained by suitable averaging of the distribution function of the field particles into the action domain of the test particle. This model is further developed to describe equations with dissipative collisions and a class of models that are of interest in mathematical biology. In this latter case the state of the particles is defined not only by a mechanical variable but also by a biological microscopic state.

The book is essentially devoted to analytic aspects and deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem and with the development of an asymptotic theory to obtain the macroscopic description from the mesoscopic one.

An Enduring & Engaging Historical Yarn.......2007-10-03

Being neither particularly well read nor well versed in history, I came to this work after listening to an audio tape of "I, Claudius." I had never heard of Robert Graves before, but found both books well-written and entertaining. Not wishing to repeat what has already been noted in the longer reviews posted here, I offer a few observations that may be of interest to those considering reading Claudius The God:

First, Graves is an exceptionally good story teller. Speaking through the character of Claudius, Graves weaves an abundance of minor tales, presumably based on historical sources, through the major story line. Some of these minor tales provide added details that support the characters and plot development, and some serve as pure diversions. But nearly all are crisply told, many are humorous or tragic, and many contain surprising historical details. Gratuitous physical descriptions of scenes and characters were refreshingly absent; these are sparkling tales that might be swapped over the water-cooler. Overall the storytelling style is a bit reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, although not quite as masterful.

Second, Claudius alludes to events and characters from the birth of Christianity in a way that smells of a pro-Christian bias. There's nothing wrong with having a pro-Christian bias, but Claudius would not have had one, and so the narrator's credibility is undermined slightly. These allusions are sparse and the bias subtle, so the overall impact is not too distracting. Perhaps in the same vein, the description of events, attitudes and mores of the characters will not leave the reader nostalgic for the Roman Empire, nor admiring of the main character. There is certainly no pro-pagan bias operating here. Claudius is presented in a sympathetic way, but in the end does not behave heroically. Such are the demands of history.

Third, the writing style is not as compressed as we are used to with most modern authors, whom adhere more closely to the Elements of Style. Graves' style is a bit antiquated in ways probably not intended to convey a Claudian voice. For example, sentences were sometimes longer than necessary and hard to follow. Given the age of the work and its many strong points, this stylistic weakness can be readily forgiven.

If you like historical fiction, try Robert Graves. If you are like me, you will be both entertained and educated.

Good Follow-up to My Favorite All-time Book.......2007-10-02

This book is the sequel to "I Claudius" which is my all-time favorite book. Though not quite up to that first book in intrigue and overall flow, it is still a great book in its own right.

There is a lot of rich descriptions of battles undertaken by the now Emperor Claudius that stretch for many pages. Also, Claudius has to deal with the betrayal of his friend Herod as well as his scheming wife Messalina (along with her debaucheries) while Claudius' advisor Pallus is also trying to usurp him.

Claudius' grand scheme to eliminate the monarchy and restore the Republic spawns the evil Nero (though he is not quite as evil as Caligula). Should not be missed!

I wouldn't recommend reading this work without its predecessor, which also deserves (and has duly received) many five-star reviews. If you loved "I, Claudius," you should definitely read this second part, which also abounds with larger-than-life characters, endless webs of plotting and scheming, and Robert Graves' narrative brilliance. But I wouldn't think of the two works as forming one big novel in two parts. "Claudius the God" is a very different work, and maybe even a better novel than "I, Claudius." Though longer in length, it covers fewer events: don't expect the same breathless succession of bloody twists and turns.

The BBC series dedicated fewer than a fourth of the episodes to this book, and for good reason: "Claudius the God" is chiefly concerned with the emperor's approach to the challenges of ruling the empire, and Robert Graves takes his time with this task. Slowing down from the intrigue-driven rhythm of "I, Claudius," Robert Graves beautifully conveys the fatality of Claudius' journey, from the excitement of his early idealistic days as a ruler bent on restoring the Republic to the last years of his reign. The book is full of nuanced emotion and even contains some surprisingly lyrical passages, which would have been quite out-of-place in its predecessor. The last few chapters are beautiful and tragic, in a way "I, Claudius" never attempts to be, as the old emperor comes face-to-face with the immutable fate of Rome and the absurdity of his own role as Caesar. Seen as a true tragedy, this novel is a real success.

Other cool elements include a brilliantly paced glance at early Christianity from Claudius' perspective, and the unpredictable and fascinating character of Herod Agrippa. Though much more complex and likeable, he electrifies (and occasionally dominates) the story as powerfully as Livia does in "I, Claudius." Messalina adds further spice, intrigue (more sexual, less bloody, than Livia), and an unexpected touch of pathos to the book. This novel is also much richer than its predecessor in its evocation of political and military maneuvers, since the management of the empire is the central foundation of the plot.

Overall, both books are brilliant. But if "I, Claudius" is lots of fun (more fun, technically speaking, I suppose, than "Claudius the God"), this book raises more questions, develops more themes, and ultimately tells a much richer story: the tragic story of what boundless power does to a man who never wanted it.

Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-07-10

I Claudius and its sequel Claudius the God are I think some of the most brilliant historical novels that I've read: informative, gripping, done with just the right flavour of setting and intentionality thrown in.

I also think they've been a bit underrated - I would say Claudius the God is at least as good as I Claudius. However the two books serve different purposes. Whilst the first describes the machinations and cruelties of the Caesars from the outside, this book does it brilliantly from within. You need to read one to appreciate the other and it is together that they present a cogent worldview. This novel makes us sympathise and empathise with Claudius but it undeniably also makes us see that from a certain perspective there is no essential difference between an "enlightened" autocrat like Claudius and a mad "tyrant" like Caligula.

Graves recreates the setting wonderfully: not only in terms of historical fact but we can see how the society influenced even a "benevolent" one like Claudius to do some hairy things. And it all reads like the most colourful fairy tale despite its historical accuracy, because both in content and presentation this novel is amazing.

Not as captivating as I, Claudius, but still good........2007-06-28

I, Claudius was one of the finest books I've ever read. Unfortunately, some of the magic is lost when Claudius changes from observer to actor.

In I, Claudius, Robert Graves creates the first person narrative of Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus, known in Roman history as Claudius, and widely regarded as an idiot. Telling the story of his family's rule from the beginning of the Christian era until his death fifty years later, Claudius relates stories of his grandmother Livia, one of the most treacherous women in history, a woman who manipulated the imperial succession through poisonings, assassinations, marriages, and secret alliances. The reign of her son Tiberius is bloody, murderous, and corrupt. Tiberius's succession by Caligula, his insane grandson and the protégé of Livia, takes Rome into even more terrifying debauchery. Claudius's ultimate succession to the throne is widely regarded as a joke.

In Claudius, the God, Graves continues the story of Claudius, who is hugely popular when he first becomes Emperor, refusing many of the numerous titles claimed by his predecessors because he believes he has not yet earned them. Gradually, we observe the truism that "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." His invasion of Britain, his relationship with his wife Messalina, and his attempts to control the succession to the throne show his attempts to manipulate Roman history and his own legacy. The reader develops enormous sympathy for this man who began his reign with pure motives but who was ultimately powerless to control his own destiny and that of Rome.

Characters are complex, fully developed humans, instead of cardboard, costumed ancients, and their machinations, though extremely bloody, show the conflicts that occur when absolute rule and republican sentiments contend for dominance, a conflict in which Graves says he saw parallels to World War I and its aftermath.

Taken together, these two novels of Claudius constitute what is arguably the greatest fictional biography ever written. Precise historical detail creates a rich tapestry of life in the period, while, at the same time, Graves's keen awareness of psychology leads to vibrant and believable characters behaving badly. The values (and lack of them) in the period are presented in dramatic scenes of violence and excess, and the fickleness of the masses (whom Claudius calls "the frog pool") is both realistic and sadly universal. There are certain people who, after creating a role on television based on a character in literature, make such an impression as that character that the mere mention of that character brings that actor or actress's name and face to mind ... and Sir Derek Jacobi's portrayal of Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus "this-that-and-the-other" in the BBC TV series I, CLAUDIUS based on the two novels I, CLAUDIUS and CLAUDIUS THE GOD by Robert Graves is in the forefront of such portrayals. In 1980, Dove Audio decided to bring the Graves novels to audio book form, and the absolutely best idea they had for the narrator was to ask Sir Derek to recreate his role as "Claudius", which he did magnificently in the audio book I, CLAUDIUS and now returns (again even remembering to include Claudius' stammer) to complete Claudius' autobiography from his unwilling election (courtesy of the Roman Army!) to become the fourth Emperor of Rome to just before his death in 54 A.D. (at the hands of his fourth wife, although this historical fact is NOT contained in the audio book!), which he tells his audience that he expects at any moment. Sir Derek's wonderful voice and vocal inflections bring Claudius to life as he recounts all the details of the history of Rome behind the history ... all the things that the official historians either never knew, overlooked or deliberately buried! But Claudius, who managed to cleverly survive THREE reigns before he got stuck with the job, is deliberately writing for US, the people of future posterity, sees no need for secrecy and takes us the reader/listener step by step through the Roman military campaigns, the private lives of the Roman aristocracy, and the various plots and murders of those men (and women too!) trying to claw their way to the Imperial throne AND those who were already there trying to keep themselves there!

The only thing I have to complain about this audio version is that while it is extremely satisfying to listen to, it is an Abridged version, but in the slightly-more-than-two hours that the recording lasts you the listener will never be bored! You may miss the overtly sexual scenes and acts that the TV series showed, but Claudius never glosses over that part in his narrative, and Sir Derek's voice expertly conveys not only the professional historian that Claudius was (in the novels, anyway!) but also a great deal of Claudius' emotion, especially in this half of his story when he is faced with the ultimate betrayals by those nearest and dearest to him. Definitely a MUST for any audio book collection!

This novel, like its antecedent I, Claudius, will mesmerize those who love classical history, although casual readers may find it tedious. The two works together form a fictional autobiography of the Roman emperor Claudius, who - at least in this literary incarnation - is both an astute observer of first century Roman political society and an extraordinary character in his own right. Born into the Roman imperial family but repelled by the violence and treachery surrounding it, Claudius retreats from power for much of his adult life. He buries himself in obscure academic pursuits and hides, for what he believes to be his own safety, behind array of weird physical disabilities. When his nephew, the mad emperor Caligula, meets his just reward, the middle-aged Claudius is literally dragged against his will onto the Imperial throne. I, Claudius ends with this bizarre scene and Claudius the God takes up from there with the improbable emperor's own account of his reign up to point of his death. Much to everyone's surprise, Claudius emerges into the public eye as an energetic, able and just ruler. And while the great pride he takes in his enterprise is evident, both the style of his rule and the tone of his narrative is characterized by a wry and self-deprecating humor. Much of the book consists of a detailed recounting of the administrative, judicial and military minutia in which Claudius immersed himself. However, there is a deeper theme at work too, which is the inevitability that innocence in a corrupt world will be betrayed. Claudius's closest friend for much of his life is Herod Agrippa, the grandson of the biblical Herod the Great. Herod Agrippa is a charming rogue and schemer who, while genuinely fond of Claudius, teases him mercilessly for being a fool and warns him, as it turns out in all seriousness, to "trust no one". The irony in the admonition is apparent when Herod himself betrays Claudius, plotting militarily against him and almost succeeding. This is only a side story, however. The thematic climax of the book occurs when it comes to light that Claudius's beautiful wife Messalina, whom he adores with the intense innocence of a teenager in love, has been using him all along for the fool, taking lovers and mocking Claudius behind his back. He finally discovers the truth when she is found to be conspiring with one of these paramours to seize the throne. She is executed for her treachery, but Claudius's spirit dies with her. He re-marries, but to a woman he cares nothing about and who, with his knowledge and acquiescence - for his death has been foretold by augury - begins amassing power on her own and conspiring to make way for her own son by a previous marriage. This son is later to enter history as the decadent fiddler Nero. The book closes with actual historical accounts by Tacitus and Dio Cassius of the real-life emperor's death at the hands of his ambitious wife, who poisons him. The last pages give us the final degradation, a bitterly satirical account Seneca, depicting Claudius - in death, once again the fool - trying to enter Olympus as the deified emperor but being banished mockingly to Hades by the other gods. The book is cynical and deeply sad. It's beautifully written and I recommend it, although it won't be to everyone's taste.
