Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A515024. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between operations tempo (OPTEMPO) and operational costs. This study was performed at the request and with the support of OPNAV N82, the Office of Budget (FMB). The goal of this project was to increase the flexibility, scalability, and justifiability of the analytical model used by FMB to budget for ship operations. This study provides a detailed description of the model including modifications made by the only other study of the FMB budgeting model. The core of the analysis centered around a regression of OPTEMPO and expenditure data. From the resultant regression equations, incremental costs of ship operations could be distilled. However, during the preliminary data validation, significant correlations were found only within the Arleigh Burke Destroyer Class of ship. These correlations were likely spurious and due to the large number of new commissionings within that class over the period of study. The lack of ability to define any relationship between OPTEMPO and expenditures is possibly due to complete expenditure of fund allocations regardless of actual costs.

Book Description
GOOS is an international programme for a permanent global framework of observations, modelling and analysis of ocean variables which are needed to support operational services around the world. The EuroGOOS strategy has two streams: the first is to improve the quality of marine information in European home waters, and the second is to collaborate with similar organisations in other continents to create a new global ocean observing and modelling system that will provide the open ocean forecasts needed to achieve the best possible performance by local marine information services everywhere. The EuroGOOS strategy envisages our national agencies making a major contribution to that challenging task of globalizing ocean forecasting. The conference also provided an opportunity to take stock of the state of marine science and technology in Europe relevant to the EuroGOOS strategy, and the state of information services and customer needs.

Description:
Development of end-user products in the context of operational oceanography requires the combined use of multi-parametric real-time measurements and numerical models with forecasting capabilities. The implementation of such systems in the Aegean Sea has established a pre-operational monitoring and forecasting capacity able to support oil-drift prediction applications and ongoing developments in ecological modeling. The monitoring basis of the system is an operational network of oceanographic buoys complemented by experimental or pre-operational components such as Ferry-Box systems, multi-parametric deep sea buoys and XBT observations from a VOS program. The hydrodynamic modeling system follows a downscaling approach and is able to reproduce general circulation and mesoscale dynamics while its forecasting skill is increased at open sea sites. Coupling to global forecasting systems, assimilation of data from the extended observing system, as well as further downscaling to coastal areas are ongoing efforts to improve the overall system performance. The oil-spill forecasting model developed for the POSEIDON system is being used to demonstrate the need of reliable oceanic forecast, especially in cases of low wind conditions when the general and mesoscale circulation is the predominant forcing factor.

Book Description
This book consists of material in the first chapter of A Physicist's Desk Reference, updated and supplemented by additional new data. It's a self-contained, quick reference guide to the most commonly used mathematical formulas, tables of data, symbols, units, standard nomenclature, and fundamental constants in physics. A useful bibliography to more complete sources of data is also included.
Customer Reviews:
You need a reference guide to make sense of this book!.......2000-04-18
It's been 10 years since I earned my physics BS, and all that knowledge has faded a bit. I wanted a book that could sit on my bookshelf at work that would have summary information that covered the gamut of physics: from simple mechanics to E&M and quantum. If this is also what you wanted, then this is not the book for you. This book is badly organized, the information it presents is badly laid out, and there are surprisingly few illustrations. That's not to say it's all bad. If the world were about to end and you could only take a few books with you on the spaceship you constructed from recycled aluminum cans and bottle rockets, then this book would probably be one to take. Just make sure you bring along H&R and other familiar texts to make sense of it.
Excellent, compact, handy reference.......1999-02-16
I'm a tech writer and programmer with a physics background. This reference is perfect for me. The formulas and constants are accessible and useful. The book is well-organized and packs all the info I need in 200 pages. If you don't want to lug the CRC around, try this book.

Book Description
Rob Mitchell is one of the last "lifers" raised in an American orphanage. Left by a dysfunctional family in an Illinois children’s home, he grew up with kids who were not friends but rather "co-survivors." After becoming a Christian as a teenager, Rob found what he was looking for, home and family, in a relationship with God. Rob was able to overcome his past, forgiving his relatives and forging healthy family relationships of his own.

Castaway kid.......2007-09-30
Wonderful book. Would recommend this book to any age group. Very touching and inspiring story.
A walk in the past.......2007-08-20
Having been in the service of serving abandoned, behaviorally disturbed children and adolescents for 32 years, I was able to reminisce and find memories explicity tied to this book. The messages are accurate, profound, and direct. The chapters relive one man's story but the themes are multiplied by the number of kids in care from yesterday to the present and the stories are wide and varied. There are many stories in the lives of children from both yesteryear to this present day and age.The names change and the faces are different but the broken body and mind are still evident today. When one reads this book you become acutely aware of why behavior, emotion, identity, can go awry. All of the clinical terminology which labels children in placement existed then and still does today. What is remarkable and I have seen it over and over is that there are those who "will" to live, who "will" to grow, who never give up. Out of all the chaos emerges a Rob Mitchell and there are numbers upon numbers who, in spite of the many abuses and neglect, rise to become vibrant creative human beings like he has. This is a story of one of them. And, of so many of the children I have seen rise out of their pathology and into health, I have also seen a remarkable closeness to an abiding faith. Rob Mitchell is a man of that faith. Castaway Kid is just one of many castaway kids. What a wonderful read.

Poignant story of survival and faith.......2007-08-11
Castaway Kid is a wonderful autobiography for anyone similarly struggling in life with circumstances beyond their control. If you think adult struggles are overwhelming, think how you'd be able to handle them as a child, when age works against you as you try to improve your situation with intelligent questions for the only adults supposed to take care of you. This is an inspirational Horatio Alger story: the kind of story that reminds you how well you have it in a free society, but where people still make mistakes and others suffer as a consequence, notwithstanding the best of intentions of some who want to help.
Full disclosure here: I also went to school with Mr. Mitchell at Guilford. But I had only a limited knowledge of his childhood and the circumstances of his parents and the two grandmothers. The details in this book were things he certainly kept private in the dorm and on campus. And I never would have guessed how irreligious he was until his epiphany. I like to think that some of the friendships he made at Guilford helped stabilize his renewed faith in mankind, even if only secondary to his faith in God. All his struggles as an adult obviously pale compared to what he had to go through as a child. But as an inspirational and motivational story, it is a very pleasant read, indeed.
Survival, God's Grace, and Hope.......2007-08-08
Too often we read about children lost in the system and of others who have been so beaten down that they never recover. Thus I found this book to be a refreshing change. Filled with hope, Rob eloquently shares his story of surviving and thriving, against all odds. I know people who lived in Princeton and have confirmed the details of Rob's story. Thank God for the Gigis and Nolas in the world who care for kids like Rob. Thanks, Rob, for baring your soul.
encouragement for all of us.......2007-08-07
This is a real page turner. I finished it in a weekend and my wife stayed up half the night finishing it. She said "I couldn't put it down".
I saw myself in so many of Rob's struggles as a youth and a young man. My situation was far more normal than his and yet the challenges for self acceptance and the stuggle to do the right thing were the same.
I highly recomend this to both young and not so young who want to be encouraged. God is clearly in control in Rob's life (and mine) in spite of circumstances.

ALL that could be discovered, however, on these pieces of paper was a few words here and there, the remainder of the lines being almost completely obliterated by the action of the water. Lord Glenarvan examined them attentively for a few minutes, turning them over on all sides, holding them up to the light, and trying to decipher the least scrap of writing, while the others looked on with anxious eyes.

Customer Reviews:
The appearance of this book is aweful. .......2005-10-03
I was not happy about the appearance of this book. This is a marvelous novel and I read it long time ago in Chinese version. The version had a lot of very good pictures, which helped to make the novel more interesting and attractive. And it looked like a novel. The English version I received looked like a computer programming guide rather than a novel.
At the first glance, I thought I had received an MS computer book, which used to come with old computer a few years ago. The size of the book looks like that. The fonts used look like that as well. I was truly disappointed to see such a marvelous and interesting novel would have yet appeared in such a dull, uninteresting, and boring way. There was not even a picture on the cover! Quite frankly, if I had not known this book previously, I would have paid no attention to it if I saw it.
Book Description
From the preface: THE three books gathered under the title “In Search of the Castaways” occupied much of Verne’s attention during the three years following 1865.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting classic science-fiction story.......2007-05-13
I love this book especially because it was one of my most favorite books when I was a child. It was my first long story that I read tens of times. For me, still it's the best science-fiction book. If you want to enjoy whole the story I recommend you to read "The Mysterious Island" and "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". All these 3 books are related to each other.
Very happy to get this!.......2006-11-06
I loved this novel as a child and I am very happy that I can finally get a copy of it. The printing and editing are not the best but they don't bother me much.

On the 26th of July, 1864, a magnificent yacht was steaming along the North Channel at full speed, with a strong breeze blowing from the N. E. The Union Jack was flying at the mizzen-mast, and a blue standard bearing the initials E. G., embroidered in gold, and surmounted by a ducal coronet, floated from the topgallant head of the main-mast. The name of the yacht was the DUNCAN, and the owner was Lord Glenarvan, one of the sixteen Scotch peers who sit in the Upper House, and the most distinguished member of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, so famous throughout the United Kingdom.
Customer Reviews:
THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER VERSION OUT THERE.......2007-02-11
This nicely bound book boasts inferior translation although it was done by an English PhD, and the type is puncuated with hypens in the middle of a sentence. This is very annoying but after about 100 pages, with patience the reader can over look this flaw if patient The greatest disappointment is the poor English translation that is at times, hard to follow as it appears the translation is literal and very clumsy to read in English. This is a book on demand edition (it is downloaded from a computer and bound when ordered and the presentation is more than acceptable), butd surely there is a better edition of this exciting adventure yarn in existence that has a broad appeal to young and old alike. It's a shame that the high price on this edition is so poorly done considering it was written by one of the most creative writers in literature. Verne has a tendency to spend far to much time detailing geography and sacrificing characterization for plot. The dialog at times is also very juvenile...but this could be due to the this particular edition, as this is the first time I have found a copy of this particular book. If nothing is available, then buy this edition. It's a rousing good yarn.
One of the more "trashy" Verne novels.......2005-06-22
In Search of the Castaways is actually the first book in a triology by Verne, the 2nd being the famous 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and the 3rd being The Mysterious Island, and, I think that the trilogy shows him improving and evolving as a writer. This means that the last one is the best (and one of my favourites of Verne's) and that this one is the worst.
Of course, like so many of Verne's works, it's still an entertaining adventure. It tells of a story of the search for Captain Grant by his young children, a captain, an eccentric scientist and many others, all aboard the one ship and armed with the classic message in a bottle (with only the latitude of the location, the longitude being erased). So, they try circumnavigate the globe and encounter a great deal of environs, people and nature. This is Verne at his descriptive best but in this book, the descriptions become overbearing as he goes on for pages and pages (even more than usual). Also, as an Australian [although I know this was before the 20th century but still...] his descriptions of the continent are a bit cliched and probably rely on his contemporary audience never having been more than 2000km away from Paris.
Yes, there's the usual betrayal, triumph and tragedy which makes it a good children's book. But it has no finer detail that some of his more mature works have. If you want something that will make you think (beyond the escapism and armchair travel aspects of Verne's books - which is certainly a legitimate and worthwhile reason for those books), try the Mysterious Island.
Finally, I did not read the book in this edition so I don't know anything about this specific one.
Great book, awful edition.......2004-09-16
The book is wonderful. It's a great adventure story, favorite with every child and adult I know. BUT - this edition looks like it is an unedited scan. Thousands of hyphens appear in totally incorrect places. First, I was determined to disregard them and enjoy the book, but by the end of 50th page I was really annoyed. This is not a book, merely a draft that needs editing. It is a shame that there is no normal edition in print.
Horrible Editing of a Masterpiece.......2004-02-08
Although I was looking forward to reading "The Castaways", otherwise known as "The Children of Captain Grant", the beauty of the writing was disturbed by glaring errors. Hyphens and random symbols randomly intrude upon the narrative and dialogue alike. Sentences are cut in half and divided by several lines of blank space. To be honest, the book is published by a .com publishing company that failed to review and edit what could have been a wonderful rendition of an engaging story. It looks as though they downloaded the translation of the story without adjusting for changes in format or checking for errors. Shame on them. Although this particular novel is difficult to find in an English edition, do not waste your money. Let us put an end to cheap publishers demeaning good works. Do not purchase this version--search for another.
book is excellent -- but softcover indypublish.com is not.......2003-07-31
The book (story) is excellent and I highly recommend it!
It's a great adventure and one of the best from Jules Verne.
I've read it many times as a kid, and it certainly deserves
5 stars, but the quality of the softcover indypublish.com
version is abysmal: crooked pages, bad layout with hyphenated
words in the middle of lines all over... certainly does not
worth $...
