The two year journal of a teacher & meterioroligist who answered an ad to go to Antarctica. The tale of his experiences and observations. At that time the British presence in the Antarctica region was called the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey. This changed once the Antarctic treaty was sicned in 1961 (while Pearce was in Antarctica). Passingly interesting and funny in places, dry and tedious in others. Would never have finished the book if I hadn't been there and interested in the area. Intersperses his experiences and tales with a review of the history of scientific expeditions in the past.
Obviously from a different era. They dumped their sewage directly into the water, threw garbage out the door to be delt with by the wind, and killed seals to feed the sled dogs. None of these happen anymore.
The worth of this book is that he experienced the end of an era.

Contains fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry.......2002-01-03

This book covers wide aspects in the field of soil-water chemistry. The topics are covered amazingly in a very smooth manner and serves as a good reference for college seniors and beginning graduate students in environmental sciences. The book covers most of important fundamental principles in soil-water chemistry. The sections are full with displays and tables, and problems, which I found it very helpful. Despite the complexcity of this topic, the author deserves a lot of credits for writing such a great book. I strongly recommend this book.

Measurement techniques form the basis of our knowledge about atmospheric composition and chemistry. Presently, important questions of atmospheric chemistry center on urban pollution, free-radical chemistry, degradation of greenhouse gases and the budgets of tropospheric and stratospheric ozone.

Among the many different optical spectroscopic methods that are in use, DOAS has emerged as a universal technique to measure the concentrations of atmospheric trace gases by making use of the characteristic absorption features of gas molecules along a path of known length in the open atmosphere.

This book reviews the basics of atmospheric chemistry, radiation transport, and optical spectroscopy before detailing the principles underlying DOAS. The second part of the book describes the design and application of DOAS instruments as well as the evaluation and interpretation of spectra. The recent expansion of DOAS application to the imaging of trace gas distributions by ground, aircraft, and satellite-based instruments is also covered.

Quien los dijera, son historias moralistas.......2001-04-21

Nunca antes había leído una obra de Sade y la verdad me agradó encontrar que de las distintas veinte o mas historias que forman parte de esta colección, dos hechos se destacan. Primero carecen de cualquier lenguaje explicito en temas sexuales. Mas bien es un divertido uso de alegorías y dobles sentidos. Además tenemos una fuerte condena a la doble moral y ausencia de principios que eran y son parte integral de la iglesia y de toda persona (políticos, abogados, magistrados y especies semejantes) que utilizan si posición de privilegio para imponer ideas y formas de vida que luego son ellos son los primeros en violentar.

Sin duda alguna los escritos de Sade eran valientes, al exigir dentro de la sociedad en la que vivía respeto para las decisiones individuales en que cada persona ejerce y goza de su sexualidad. Tal petición, incluso considerando de los muchos logros que se han dado en estos dos siglos, aún sigue vigente. Su irreverencia era la de una persona inteligente que ve claramente que el emperador no esta vestido y que la autoridad jamás podrá ser un valor en si misma.
