            Book Description

Non-crystalline solid tellurite glasses continue to intrigue both academic and industry researchers not only because of their many technical applications, but also because of a fundamental interest in understanding their microscopic mechanisms. Tellurite Glasses Handbook: Physical Properties and Data is the first and only comprehensive source of physical constants and properties of these unique, non-crystalline solids. The author has collected rigid data from experiments conducted over the last 50 years and presents here their elastic, anelastic, optical, electrical, and thermal properties. He also provides details of the experimental techniques, explores applications, and suggests directions of future research. The interference and independence of physical processes occurring simultaneously are key problems in material science. With the Tellurite Glasses Handbook, researchers can begin to understand these physical processes, overcome current technological problems, and open up a new area of glass science: the Physics of Non-Crystalline Solids

                Book Description

This book explores oxygen-free chalcogenide glasses, the only commercial transparent vitreous materials used for long-wave infrared radiation. The chalcogenides have been the subject of study around the world for many years, and continue to be an important area of research and development in infrared optics. Written by a renowned glass specialist with extensive experience working with chalcogenide glasses, Glasses for Infrared Optics includes discussions of: o Chalcogenide glasses - a unique class of vitreous substances o Optical properties of chalcogenide glasses o Elaboration of commercial glasses o Technological basics for manufacturing optical chalcogenide glasses The material presented in Glasses for Infrared Optics is based on research performed at the Vavilov State Optical Institute in Russia. This is the first and only work that reviews every aspect of chalcogenide glasses. The scope of this comprehensive book is unique, and the major portion of this work has never been published before in English.

                  Book Description

This book focuses on selected topics which are new and of fundamental importance in the application of active glasses in photonic devices. Most of the chapters deal with glasses under the action of higher electromagnetic fields, such as those produced by femtosecond lasers. They cover the creation and analysis of induced structures in glasses and some functional devices using active glasses. This book is designed for both graduate students and researchers in the field.

                      Product Description

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A940804. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Tunable micro-optical devices are expected to be vital for future military optical communication systems. In this research I seek to optimize the design of a microelectromechanical (MEM) structure integrated with a III-V semiconductor micro-optical device. The resonant frequency of an integrated optical device, consisting of a Fabry-Perot etalon or vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), may be tuned by applying an actuation voltage to the MEM Flexure, thereby altering the device's optical cavity length. From my analysis I demonstrate tunable devices compatible with conventional silicon 5V integrated circuit technology. My design for a Fabry-Perot etalon has a theoretical tuning range of 200 nm, and my VCSEL design has a tuning range of 44nm, both achieved with actuation voltages as low as 4V. Utilizing my theoretical device designs I planned a new microelectronics fabrication process to realize a set of prototype MEM-tunable devices with a peak central emission wavelength at 980nm. I designed a mask set consisting of 8 mask levels and 252 distinct device designs, all within a die size of one square centimeter. My unique fabrication process utilizes a gold MEM flexure with a Si3N4/SiO2 dielectric distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirror, grown on an all-semiconductor VCSEL or Fabry-Perot substrate. I successfully fabricated a complete set of MEM-tunable test structures using the cleanroom laboratory facilities at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).

                                  Book Description

Men and Women of the 1930s is an original and challenging critique of the issues of memory and gender during this trying decade. Montefiore asks two principle questions; what part does memory play in the political literature of and about 1930s Britain? And what were the roles of women, both as writers and as signifying objects in constructing that literature? Montefiore's topical analysis of 1930s mass unemployment, fascist uprise and 'appeasement' is shockingly relevant in society today. Issues of class, anti-fascist historical novels, post war memoirs of 'Auden generation' writers and neglected women poets are discussed at length and help explain how we understand and imagine history through literature.
