    Book Description

The general field of fundamental and applied biotechnology becomes increasingly important for the production of biologicals for human and veterinary use, by using prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. The papers in the present book are refereed articles compiled from oral and poster presentations from the EFB Meeting on Recombinant Protein Production with Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells. A Comparative View on Host Physiology, which was organized in Semmering/A from 5th to 8th October 2000. A special feature of this meeting was the comparison of different classes of host cells, mainly bacteria, yeasts, filamentous fungi, and animal cells, which made obvious that many physiological features of recombinant protein formation, like cell nutrition, stress responses, protein folding and secretion, or genetic stability, follow similar patterns in different expression systems. This comparative aspect is by far the point of most interest because such comparisons are rarely done, and if they are done, their results are most often kept secret by the companies who generated them.
Audience: Presently, a comparable book does not exist because the compiling of manuscripts from all fields of biotechnology (prokaryotic as well as eukaryotic, up to animal cell biotechnology) is not done in general. This particularity makes this book very interesting for postgraduate students and professionals in the large field of biotechnology who want to get a more global view on the current state of the expression of recombinant biologicals in different host cell systems, the physiological problems associated with the use of different expression systems, potential approaches to solve such difficulties by metabolic engineering or the use of other host cells, and the cooperation between process development and strain improvement, which is crucial for the optimisation of both the production strain and the process. This book should be in every library of an institution/organization involved in biotechnology.

            Book Description

This book integrates those critical geologic aspects of reservoir formation and occurrence with engineering aspects of reservoirs, and presents a comprehensive treatment of the geometry, porosity and permeability evolution, and producing characteristics of carbonate reservoirs. The three major themes discussed are:

            • the geometry of carbonate reservoirs and relationship to original depositional facies distributions

            • the origin and types of porosity and permeability systems in carbonate reservoirs and their relationship to post-depositional diagenesis

            • the relationship between depositional and diagenetic facies and producing characteristics of carbonate reservoirs, and the synergistic geologic-engineering approach to the exploitation of carbonate reservoirs.

The intention of the volume is to fully aquaint professional petroleum geologists and engineers with an integrated geologic and engineering approach to the subject. As such, it presents a unique critical appraisal of the complex parameters that affect the recovery of hydrocarbon resources from carbonate rocks. The book may also be used as a text in petroleum geology and engineering courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

              Book Description

This comprehensive text and accompanying CD-ROM will provide the reader with an integrated overview of diagenesis and porosity evolution in carbonate petroleum reservoirs and ancient carbonate rock sequences.

The initial chapters of this volume provide an overview of the carbonate sedimentologic system and the application of sequence stratigraphic concepts to carbonate rock sequences. The nature of carbonate porosity and its control by diagenesis is explored. Porosity classification schemes are detailed, compared, and their utility examined. The nature and characteristics of diagenetic environments and tools for their recognition in the ancient record are specified.

The middle chapters of the book consist of a thorough examination of the major, surficial diagenetic environments, such as normal marine, evaporative marine and meteoric environments, emphasising porosity modifying processes illustrated by numerous case histories. There follows a summary of early diagenesis and porosity evolution couched in a sequence stratigraphic, climatic and tectonic framework. Predictive porosity/diagenesis models are developed. The fate of early-formed porosity is explored in the burial diagenetic regimen in a tectonic framework. Factors controlling porosity destruction, porosity preservation and porosity enhancement are outlined and illustrated by case histories.

The final chapter consists of three well-constrained economically important case histories that serve to summarise the concepts and exploration/production strategies developed earlier.

The epilogue gives the reader a sense of the legacy of important earlier workers, the present state of the art and the author's sense of where the science of carbonate reservoirs needs to go in the future.

The accompanying CD-ROM provides color versions of all diagrams/illustrations found in the text.

This book should be useful to any geologist interested in carbonate sediments and rocks, and the porosity/diagenesis models will be particularly useful to exploration/production geologists. The book will be a good text for advanced carbonate courses at graduate level, and an appropriate reference book for graduate students working with, or interested in, carbonate rock sequences and sediments.

                    Book Description

One principal need in petroleum recovery from carbonate reservoirs is the description of the three-dimensional distribution of petrophysical properties in order to improve performance predictions by means of fluid-flow computer simulations. The book focuses on a rock based approach for the integration of geological, petrophysical, and geostatistical methods to construct a reservoir model suitable to input into flow simulation programs. This second edition includes a new chapter on model construction and new examples of limestone, dolostone, and touching-vug reservoir models as well as improved chapters on basic petrophysical properties, rock-fabric/petrophysical relationships, calibration of wireline logs, and sequence stratigraphy.

                          Book Description

This book presents a comprehensive survey of the origin of turbulence in near-wall shear layer flows. Instead of going too far into details modern approaches to the problem are discussed in a conceptual treatment. The transition from laminar to turbulent flows in shear layers is described including the generation of flow perturbations, their amplification and development, the breakdown of the initial laminar state, and transformation to a turbulent regime. This book also presents new approaches to boundary-layer transitions with strong external-flow perturbations and to the prediction and control of the presented near-wall transitions to turbulence. This book is addressed to researchers, lecturers and students in engineering, physics and mathematics.

                                          Book Description

From "Around the World in 80 Days" to "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", millions of readers around the world have enjoyed the works of Jules Verne, the father of science fiction and one of the most important literary figures of all time. Particularly enjoyable is the autobiographical section that meticulously compiles all references Verne made in his sole autobiographical piece, "Memories of Childhood and Youth," with those made to a variety of journalists. There is also an in-depth, annotated listing of all English language versions of Verne's novels, an analysis of recurring themes in his work, and a detailed discussion of the filmed versions of his books. The authors trace each variation in Verne's published work, including "Paris in the Twentieth Century".

                                          Book Description

Jules Verne—Voila!—is a name that resonates with visions of fantastic adventures and images of exotic exploits. In his voyages extraordinaires, the noted French author integrates his encyclopedic knowledge of science and geography with his ability to tell fascinating and entertaining tales, taking his readers on unprecedented journeys across the globe, into the earth, and out into space. This revered writer, who with his boundless imagination had hoped to contribute substantially to the world of letters, has surpassed that expectation to become coincidentally a significant influence on film.

This comprehensive filmography not only offers an incisive analysis of Verne's epic creations, but also presents an examination of the films inspired by his stories and characters. If one tries to think of all the films adapted from the works of Jules Verne, a fair sampling might be easy to come up with. If one looks more closely at the plots and motifs of many other films, science fiction and otherwise, their origins are revealed to have been derived from Verne. For example, most film enthusiasts are familiar with Disney's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and a few may even be aware of the 1916 silent version. But Verne's classic undersea novel also provided the underpinnings for such other movies as Fantastic Voyage (1966) and Innerspace (1987). The central arrangement is by Verne's title with a brief thematic analysis of the novel. The entry then presents in chronological order all cinematic adaptations of that work, allowing the user to make ! comparative analyses of not only the movies but also their relationships to Verne's original story. Filmographic data are provided for each adaptation, along with a plot synopsis that blends critical commentary with an examination of the connection between the movie and Verne's work.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A Reference-Work.......1999-12-20

As far as I know the only film-book about Jules Verne on film in english language. The Filmography is almost complete (I only found one german-TV-Movie about "Mathias Sandorf" missing)and lists even west- and easteuropean Films from the silent movies of Georges Méliès till today (1997). Sometimes the author lists films which are "influenced" by Jules Vernes that goes for my taste a little bit too far: "The Black Hole" by "20'000 Leagues Under The Sea". Still this book is definitively an important reference-work an belongs in every serious filmbook-collection!
