    Book Description

Power Laws, Scale-free Networks and Genome Biology deals with crucial aspects of the theoretical foundations of systems biology, namely power law distributions and scale-free networks which have emerged as the hallmarks of biological organization in the post-genomic era. The chapters in the book not only describe the interesting mathematical properties of biological networks but moves beyond phenomenology, toward models of evolution capable of explaining the emergence of these features. The collection of chapters, contributed by both physicists and biologists, strives to address the problems in this field in a rigorous but not excessively mathematical manner and to represent different viewpoints, which is crucial in this emerging discipline. Each chapter includes, in addition to technical descriptions of properties of biological networks and evolutionary models, a more general and accessible introduction to the respective problems. Most chapters emphasize the potential of theoretical systems biology for discovery of new biological phenomena.

      Book Description

In the past decade over ten major tsunami events have impacted on the world’s coastlines, causing devastation and loss of life. Evidence for past great tsunami, or ‘mega-tsunami’, has also recently been discovered along apparently aseismic and protected coastlines. With a large proportion of the world’s population living on the coastline, the threat from tsunami can not be ignored. This book comprehensively describes the nature and process of tsunami, outlines field evidence for detecting the presence of past events, and describes particular events linked to earthquakes, volcanoes, submarine landslides and meteorite impacts. While technical aspects are covered, much of the text can be read by anyone with a high school education. The book will appeal to students and researchers in geomorphology, earth and environmental science, and emergency planning, and will also be attractive for the general public interested in natural hazards and new developments in science.

5 out of 5 stars Time for a New Edition.......2005-03-29

I purchased this book in 2004 for it's original retail price of US$27.95. Now I see used copies selling for more than $300 on amazon.com. This book is a terrific analysis of what we now know, as the sub-title 'The Underrated Hazard' suggests, an extraordinarily prescient work outlining the causes and historical occurences of one of the earth's more destructive natural phenomenon, tsunamis.

Please, CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, encourage Mr. Bryant to update this extraordinarily informative book with an analyse of the earthquake and tsunami of December 26, 2004.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read on the Subject But Fairly Technical.......2002-04-18

In a lot of science books written for the general reader, the complaint is that the material is sensationalistic and over-simplified. Edward Bryant almost errs in the other direction. His evidence that very large Tsunami have played a key role in shaping many coastal regions is extremely well-presented and will contain lots of new information for even dedicated followers of Earth Science news.

On the other hand, while reading information about landscapes re-arranged by truly massive "mega-tsunami," one sometimes longs for livelier prose. The book may also be something of a slog now and then for people with no background in Earth Science.

I would recommend this book highly to anyone with a serious interest in the subject, and certainly to anyone who needs to consider tsunami from a policy-making point of view.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Complete treatise on climatic and geological hazards .......2004-08-08

With this book Dr. Bryant (from Wollongong University, Aus) gives a complete overview on natural hazards, as well as its social impacts. Apart from how natural hazards occur, the author also presents (controversial) methods how to predict hazards from occurring again (on short and long term). Bryant starts his book with his successful forecasts of the Australian summer 88/89. He was then able to predict the start of heavy precipitation in Australia NSW starting on Nov 15, 1988 and ending on June 30, 1989. He claims that there is sound scientific evidence that cosmic / planetary links exist with the occurrence of earthquakes and floods. The 11-year sunspot cycle and the 18.6-year lunar cycle (caused by the moon's orbit fluctuation) are used to show a correlation with the ENSO index, occurrences of floods and droughts in North America, Northern China, Australia, Patagonia, amongst others. Very surprising he also shows that in some parts of the world (such as the Mediterranean) the sunspot frequency and the seismic activity are correlated, via fluctuations in the Earth's rotation (in the order of milliseconds). However, if earthquake occurrence is dominated by some force external to the Earth (as mentioned by the author), then one would expect clustering to be taking place at the same time worldwide, which is not supported by the data.

The book contains a lot of case studies with photographs, tables and figures of natural disasters. There is an abundance of references, which makes this book a very valuable work. The Dutch case study of coastal floods in 1953 is presented with a small mistake though. Not the dams fronting the old Zuiderzee were breached, but the dikes of the southern province of Zeeland were overtopped and slided because of extreme wind set up.

          Book Description

There are many natural hazards such as floods, landslides, volcanoes and earthquakes in the Asia-Pacific Region. Nevertheless, there are few studies of such natural hazards in this region and knowledge about their mitigation is of the utmost importance.
This book documents the use of geomorphological maps showing the state of flooding; these maps allow predictions to be made. The author has compiled geomorphological maps and documentation of their validation, and the maps allow not only estimation of flooding, but also prediction of soil liquefaction caused by earthquakes.
Audience: The results of the discussions in this book apply not only to geographers, consultants, engineers and policy makers in Japan and Southeast Asian countries, but also to those from Europe, North America, and Africa.

                  Book Description

The Geomorphological Hazards of Europe contains an excellent balance of authoritative statements on the range and causes of natural hazards in Europe. Written in a clear and unpretentious style, it removes myths and concentrates on the basic facts.

The book looks at the known distributions, processes and the underlying principles and focuses on the need for a true understanding of the scientific details so that a real contribution to hazard management can be made.

A comprehensive treatment of scientific and management issues of hazards in Europe caused by natural or sometimes human induced earth surface processes are covered including floods, landslides, avalanches, glacier-, coastal-, karstic-, and volcanic hazards, soil erosion and subsidence.

Leading researchers in the field of natural hazards and their mitigation have contributed to this nation by nation account covering 20 European countries. The individual chapters deal with the distribution of natural hazards within specific countries (quite often the first synthesis of the information available) and

                  • provide a review of current research in the field

                  • discuss the economic, engineering and policy responses in national hazard management

                  • are complemented by an extensive bibliography.

The volume is well illustrated with 207 figures of which 66 are photos and has an extensive general index and a complete index of place names. It is a major European contribution to the International Decade for Natural Disasters Reduction.

The book will appeal to practitioners, managers, academicians, researchers, as well as graduate students in geomorphlogy, natural hazards research and environmental management.

                    Book Description

The theme of this proceedings volume is the latest research on geomorphic characteristics and processes associated with natural hazards. Presentations cover a gamut of types of disasters throughout the world, describing research and applications of studies in the U.S. and other countries. The book begins with a collection of papers giving a basic background and philosophy of approaching an understanding of natural disasters. These are followed by papers on natural hazards in coastal areas, mountainous regions, landslides, flooding and the detrimental effects of permafrost.

The book should prove valuable in gaining an insight of natural hazards and their geomorphic relations, which is imperative for prudent environmental planning in coping with disasters.

                      Product Description

Over the past decade there has been a gradual shift away from simply relying on engineering solutions to individual landslide problems, to the use of a variety of strategies to manage the problems over a broad area. Such alternative strategies include the use of building codes, land use planning controls, preventing water leakage, early warning systems and insurance schemes. This book addresses these developments and provides a multidisciplinary perspective on landslide management. Placing emphasis on the need to understand the scientific basis of landslide activity together with the legislative and administrative framework and the cultural background. Chapters include: Landslides and risk assessment; Landslide hazard assessment; Probablistic hazard assessment; Consequence assessment; Risk screening; Quantitative risk assessment; Risk acceptance criteria; Risk management; and Case examples.

The contents are what they are. I thought given the price the book manufacturing would do this classic piece justice. It is kind of cheese. My java stained copy has more character. Send this version to the event horizon.

Maybe the best known thing about the book is its association with Einstein's PhD thesis, which demonstrated the connection between Brownian movement and the atomic nature of matter. Perrin's book gave important experimental validation of Einstein's theoretical thesis.

The book shows Perrin's meticulous attention to detail. You might appreciate the sheer tediousness of some of the observational techniques. Nowadays, much of this would be automated. But Perrin had to do everything manually.

                      Book Description

Once I was a sane, levelheaded professional woman. Then I said “yes.” Now I am the lunatic bride I always made fun of!

What is it about getting married that turns normal people into total freaks?

A savvy, riotously funny novel, Diary of a Mad Bride is for anyone who has ever been a bride, is about to become a bride, yearned to be a bride, or suffered the sheer indignity of appearing in public in the world’s ugliest bridesmaid dress....

My wedding was starting in less than twenty minutes, and I was stuck in a 7-Eleven parking lot with popcorn kernels wedged in my gums and vanilla ice cream melting on my dress. It was a disaster too large to comprehend. After an agonizing year spent planning my wedding, could it really end like this? The voices chronicling a year of wedding hysteria swirled in my head....

                      — My grandmother upon viewing my engagement ring:

“What do you mean he gave you an emerald! Diamonds are eternal, emeralds say, maybe five years.”

                      — My future father-in-law on the night of my engagement party:

“To a happy marriage and, if necessary, a painless divorce!”

                      — My best friend, Anita:

“Oh, screw congratulations. Of course I’m happy for you. Stephen’s a major piece of ass and he’s got a sense of humor. Just as long as you’re certain this is what you want.”

Would I survive this day after all....?

4 out of 5 stars A Quick and Fun Read.......2006-10-23

As someone in the process of planning a New York wedding, I couldn't resist grabbing this book off the shelf. Our protagonist, who supposedly isn't the marrying type at the beginning, quickly shifts attitudes when her boyfriend proposes to her inside a movie theater. It's a crazy ride for the next few months, as she narrates us through her stubborn family, fiancé dramas, and wedding industry woes. The book is filled with surprises and amusing anecdotes.

Although the majority of the book is realistic, it felt like the author forced certain scenarios for the sake of creating humor and drama. And while the wedding planning was crunched, it seemed like the protagonist was incapable of doing any research or planning herself--rather, she dumped it on her assistant. It included the major elements of planning, but a lot was left out (photography and cake madness, for instance). All together, I felt this was an entertaining and touching read, though often not relatable.

Laura Wolf's 'DIARY OF A MAD BRIDE' catalogs the count down to Amy Thomas' big day and all of the craziness that ensues before hand. Beginning with Amy being a bridesmaid in one of her best friends wedding and swearing that if she ever got married she would not become a "bridezilla" as her friend had. The reader watches as Amy go from a level headed bride-to-be to an almost crazed "bridezilla" herself!

Wolf has written a hilarious account of how stressful planing a wedding can actually be. I laughed out loud numerous times and definitely recommend this book for anyone currently planning a wedding (surely you could use a laugh to de-stress a bit). Also, for all of you brides-to-be, this would make a great tag along gift for your loyal bridesmaids who've stuck with you throughout all the stages of planning and barely avoided any of your phone calls!
