Book Description
The plant fossil record provides evidence that the genus Metasequoia was widely distributed and experienced a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions throughout the Northern Hemisphere from the early Late Cretaceous to the Plio-Pleistocene. Today the genus is limited to one species with approximately 5,000 mature individuals growing in the Xiahoe Valley in southeastern China. This book is a distillation of the collective efforts and results of the world’s Metasequoia specialists and enthusiasts. It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive reference source for the genus and the authors have sought to incorporate obscure, hard-to-get and non-English reference sources. The book reviews what is known about the biology, ecology and physiology of fossil and living Metasequoia, current research directions and problems that remain unresolved.
This book presents a definitive overview of fossil and living Metasequoia and was written by sixteen of the world’s experts on this important genus. Given the reality of increasing human pressure and the inevitability of global change, efforts to conserve this ancient genus are underway. This book will be of interest to botanists, geologists, paleobotanists, biogeographers, foresters, ecologists, paleoecologists, ecophysiologists, geochemists, climate modelers, geneticists, naturalists, science historians, and gardeners and will be useful as a supplemental text for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in paleoecology.

Book Description
This book examines the differences between an ideal and a real description of wave propagation, where ideal means an elastic (lossless), isotropic and single-phase medium, and real means an anelastic, anisotropic and multi-phase medium. The analysis starts by introducing the relevant stress-strain relation. This relation and the equations of momentum conservation are combined to give the equation of motion. The differential formulation is written in terms of memory variables, and Biot's theory is used to describe wave propagation in porous media. For each rheology, a plane-wave analysis is performed in order to understand the physics of wave propagation. The book contains a review of the main direct numerical methods for solving the equation of motion in the time and space domains. The emphasis is on geophysical applications for seismic exploration, but researchers in the fields of earthquake seismology, rock acoustics, and material science - including many branches of acoustics of fluids and solids - may also find this text useful.
* Presents the fundamentals of wave propagation in anisotropic, anelastic and porus media
* Contains a new chapter on the analogy between acoustic and electromagnetic waves, incorporating the subject of electromagnetic waves
* Emphasizes geophysics, particularly, seismic exploration for hydrocarbon reservoirs, which is essential for exploration and production of oil

Radiowave Propagation over Ground.......2002-04-17
I found that this book is a well-explained treatment of the problem of propagation over ground. It firstly discusses the solution of the boundary conditions for an elemental current source over plane homogeneous ground and later over a spherical earth by firstly taking a historical approach and representation of the earlier works of Norton and others and then secondly exanding and deriving similar equations.
The treatment does appear to be an approximation of the problem
however, as the near-field terms are dropped and there doesn't appear to be an account for losses immediately under the antenna. The far-field terms, for the plane earth, are derived from image theory and the treatment of the ground as a reflector using Fresnel plane-wave reflection and the concept of surface impedance.
Some account of divergence of the radiation due to the spherical earth was presented and in the later chapters and an attempt to characterise diffraction by objects was also shown.
I believe this is a good introductory text and it appears to lay the foundations for some software that the author's have developed (and advertised in the book).
It has whet my appetitte for further sources on the propagation of surface waves, which do not currently appear to be available at Amazon.com.
It would also have been nicer if I didn't have to pay this much for a book in order to review it, but none the less it is a valuable reference, albeit somewhat expensive compared to Information Technology books.
For groundwave, this is it........2001-01-10
This is probably the best work I have seen on this topic. Contains most derivations, well referenced and logically laid out.
A must have for any radio engineer. John

Very nice style and examples, but annoying omissions..........2007-02-21
This book is extremely well written, is set at a beginning-to-intermediate level, is attractively presented, and has historical footnotes thrown in as interesting diversions. It does a great job at illustrating fundamental ideas, such as the difference between lumped and distributed circuit analysis, where a diagram of a resistor and waves with various wavelengths are used to make the point. However, it is annoying that he does not cover oblique incidence of waves (only normal) or dielectric waveguides or antennas. He placed that in a 2nd electromagnetic waves book. This might make sense for a two year sequence in a university. However, his lack of inclusion of these topics make it hard to recommend the book as complete. It is more like volume 1 of a 2 set volume.
good but not complete.......2003-10-17
I am using this book for my electromagnetics course and it has good explanation of some concepts. It does not cover anything about Smith chart or even give an introduction to transmission lines and i think it is important to have these topics in the text. But for this shortcoming the book is well organised and has a large number of problems at the end of the chapter for practice. I recommed this book to all students for their introductory course ,provided they have strong background in calculus
Excellent Book for Electromagnetism Fundamentals.......2000-12-22
I think this book does a better job of providing a handle on the vector nature of E&M than virtually any other textbook out there. Very often you'll see other authors reduce integrations to scalar equations without showing you the steps involved (dot or cross products), but Inan uses vectors consistently. You will be amazed at how this alone improves your grasp of the material. The rigor and completeness of the coverage are far better than any of the other engineering E&M books, and his willingness to plug in numbers to make some practical calculations is very welcome in comparison with pure physics treatments like Jackson's. The guy above says that waveguides are not covered in detail in this book, and this is true, but the second book in the series (Electromagnetic Waves) covers waveguides and reflection, refraction, transmission, etc. in great detail.
The purpose of this book is to provide you with solid fundamentals in transmission lines and the application of Maxwell's equations, and it succeeds admirably.
A book with faults and limitations.......1999-03-09
The biggest disappointment about this book is the use of the same r throughout the book for the distance to the z-axis in the cylindrical coordinate system and for the distance to the origin. This is not only confusing but also can lead to wrong results. The advantage of discussing transmission lines (a third of the book) before electromagnetic fields is debatable. The electromagnetics part covers only waves at normal incidence and rudimentary treatment of parallel-plate and coaxial lines. No rectangular or circular waveguides, or antenna systems, or other engineering applications are discussed. Why then is the title "Engineering Elecrtromagnetics?" The authors' presentation and the book format are, in general, good.
Book Description
Providing a systematic and self-contained treatment of excitation, propagation and re- emission of electromagnetic waves guided by density ducts in magnetized plasmas, this book describes in detail the theoretical basis of the electrodynamics of ducts. The classical dielectric-waveguide theory in open guiding systems in magnetoplasma is subjected to rigorous generalization. The authors emphasize the conceptual physical and mathematical aspects of the theory, while demonstrating its applications to problems encountered in actual practice. The opening chapters of the book discuss the underlying physical phenomena, outline some of the results obtained in natural and artificial density ducts, and describe the basic theory crucial to understanding the remainder of the book. The more specialized and complex topics dealt with in subsequent chapters include the theory of guided wave propagation along axially uniform ducts, finding the field excited by the source in the presence of a duct, excitation of guided modes, the asymptotic theory of wave propagation along axially nonuniform ducts, and mode re-emission from a duct. The full wave theory is used throughout most of the book to ensure consistency, and the authors start with simpler cases and gradually increase the complexity of the treatment.

Writers acknowledge their debts to D. H. Lawrence.......2003-08-07
Gary Adelman has tried to figure out why the work of D. H. Lawrence has nearly disappeared from college reading lists but is still held in high respect by contemporary authors. Adelman surveyed hundreds of authors and learned -- not surprisingly -- that they admire Lawrence's spirit and fearless writing style, even though many of his notions of character and many of his values are out of fashion. Academics, on the other hand, deplore Lawrence because his does not fit into the categories of discourse that reign today or lend himself to deconstructive analysis. Adelman's book is provocative, though rather academic in its approach. Apparently Adelman is the rare professor who does appreciate Lawrence.
