    Book Description

Oxford Reviews of Reproductive Biology is published annually and provides an up-to-date and authoritative account of clinical, mammalian, and non-mammalian problems in reproduction, including physiological, cellular, and molecular aspects. It is intended for all those working in the fields of
reproduction, fertility, and sterility, including lecturers, research scientists, clinicians, veterinarians, and postgraduate and undergraduate students. This volume reviews on embryo-maternal interactions in primates and the roles of the extracellular matrix and of adhesion molecules in gonadal
function and implantation. The early development of the male genital tract is covered in a review of the anti-Mullerian hormone, and the effects of age on reproductive processes are correlated in a further chapter. Immunological aspects of reproduction on the female thymus are described and
comparative studies are represented in a chapter on seasonal breeding in macropodial marsupials. Finally, a chapter on X and Y sperm separation brings us right up to date in this controversial area.

      Book Description

Hydraulic parameter identification is a crucial step in hydrogeological investigations. The book proposes a unique and generalized interpretation method for single and multiple pumping tests made in groundwater reservoirs with layered heterogeneity and with or without lateral anisotropy. This method eliminates the drawbacks of the numerous and frequently applied interpretation methods. The book also presents an introduction to inverse modeling, resulting in optimal parameter values with their joint confidence region and the corresponding residuals. Cross sections through this multidimensional region elucidate the relation between the shape of this region and some statistical parameters describing the reliability of the identified parameters. This method is demonstrated by means of five pumping or recharge tests.

      Book Description

This revised second edition of a popular handbook for engineers describes the important relationship between high-energy radiation environments, electronic device physics and materials. It is a straightforward account of the problems which arise when high-energy radiation bombards matter and of engineering methods for solving those problems. Radiation effects are a problem encountered in the use of highly engineered materials such as semiconductors, optics and polymers. The finely-tuned properties of these materials may change drastically when exposed to a radiation environment such as a beam of X-rays or electrons, the space environment or the 'hadrons' in CERN's new collider. All of these environments and several more are described. At the core of this book is a discussion of the impact of these environments on the devices used in computing, data processing and communication. While unashamedly oriented to the engineer-designer and manager, with descriptions in a highly readable form, there is no compromise in physical accuracy when describing high-energy radiation and the effects it produces, such as electronic failure, coloration and the decay of strength. A great breadth of technical data, such as may be needed to make quick decisions, is presented with literature references and a compendium of web-sites which have been tested and used by the authors.

        Book Description

The need for this handbook is a direct consequence of a very large accumulation of new theoretical and experimental data on nucleur properties. The first five chapters are devoted to the presentation of experimental and theoretical aspects of the following topics: atomic masses of stable and radioactive nuclides; an intuitive way to understand the empirical trends of masses, based on a microscopic theory; Penning traps used as a modern mass spectrometer of high resolving power, accuracy and sensitivity; basic theoretical concepts and experimental techniques used to measure the nucleur shape parameters; new decay modes by hadron and cluster emission; the proton (p), and the beta-delayed particle emissions: neutron (n), 2n, 3n, 4n, p, 2p, 3p, d, t, etc. A series of tables are given in the second part of the handbook: fundamental constants and energy conversion factors; the decay modes of Gauge and Higgs bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, baryons, and searches for free quarks, monoples, supersymmetries, compositeness, etc; selected alpha particle emitters; recommended data on y-ray and X-ray standards used for detector calibrations; a comprehensive table of all known nuclides (spin, parity, mass excess, half-life, or abundance for stable nuclei, and the main decay modes with the corresponding branching ratios).

              Book Description

Literally thousands of elementary particles have been discovered over the last 50 years, their properties measured, relationships systematized, and existence and behavior explained in a myriad of cleverly constructed theories. As the field has grown so impressively, so has its jargon. Until now, scientists in other fields have had no single resource from which they can quickly reference an idea, acronym, or term and find an accessible definition and explanation. The Handbook of Particle Physics fills that void. This unique work contains, in encyclopedic form, terms of interest in particle physics, including its peculiar jargon. It covers the experimental and theoretical techniques of particle physics along with terms from the closely related fields of astrophysics and cosmology. Designed primarily for non-specialists with a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and relativity, the entries preserve a degree of rigor by providing the relevant technical and mathematical details. Clear and engaging prose, numerous figures, and historical overviews complement the handbook's convenience both as a reference and as an invitation into the fascinating world of particle physics.

This BriefBook is a much extended glossary or a much condensed handbook, depending on the way one looks at it. It deals with detectors in particle and nuclear physics experiments. The authors describe, in encyclopedic format, the physics, the application, and the analysis of data from these detectors. Ample reference is made to the published literature. An introduction for newcomers, a reference for scientists.

I bought this book last year while I was a student in London. As a student of nuclear physics/chemistry, I found this book very useful as a reference to the different aspects of detectors and principles of particle detection. It's all in alphabetical order, and gives a good explanation of the different subjects. Good value for the price of this book.

              Book Description

This book consists of reviews covering all aspects of quantum chromodynamics as we know it today. The articles have been written by recognized experts in this field, in honor of the 75th birthday of Professor Boris Ioffe. Combining features of a handbook and a textbook, this is the most comprehensive source of information on the present status of QCD. It is intended for students as well as physicists - both theorists and experimentalists.

Each review is self-contained and pedagogically structured, providing the general formulation of the problem, telling where it stands with respect to other issues and why it is interesting and important, presenting the history of the subject, qualitative insights, and so on. The first part of the book is historical in nature. It includes, among other articles, Boris Ioffe's and Yuri Orlov's memoirs on high energy physics in the 1950's, a note by B V Geshkenbein on Ioffe's career in particle physics, and an essay on the discovery of asymptotic freedom written by David Gross.

This book is an invaluable resource to anyone who wishes to gain an overview of the struggle to understand the strong nuclear force. This is a struggle taking place on several fronts, and so the strategy of asking those directly involved on those different fronts to describe their work gives a refreshing---and thorough---view QCD. The article on "Crossing the Border", which discusses attempts to understand nuclear physics from effective theories based on QCD is particularly stimulating, and beautifully written into the bargain.

                    Book Description

With its inspired counterpointing of Homeric and Caribbean themes, Derek Walcott's new play, commissioned by Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company, springs from the same imaginative sources as his epic poem Omeros.

Episodes of the story of Odysseus' protracted wanderings from fallen Troy to his island home of Ithaca are pungently interspersed with a commentary by the blind singer Billy Blue. Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea, the giant Cyclops, Circe and her revellers, ghosts, and mermaids are among the cast. With its vast sweep and richly figurative language, The Odyssey confirms that Derek Walcott is as compelling a playwright as he is a poet.
