Book Description
In this book, methodology of dynamical systems theory is applied to investigate the physics of the large-scale ocean circulation. Topics include the dynamics of western boundary currents such as the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean and the Kurosio in the Pacific Ocean, the stability of the thermohaline circulation, and the El Niño/Southern Oscillation phenomenon in the Tropical Pacific. The book also deals with the numerical methods to apply bifurcation analysis on large-dimensional dynamical systems, with tens of thousands (or more) degrees of freedom, which arise through discretization of ocean and climate models. The novel approach to understand the phenomena of climate variability is through a systematic analysis of the solution structure of a hierarchy of models using these techniques. In this way, a connection between the results of the different models within the hierarchy can be established. Mechanistic description of the physics of the results is provided and, where possible, links with results of state-of-the-art ocean (and climate) models and observations are sought. The reader is expected to have a background in basic fluid dynamics and applied mathematics, although the level of the text sometimes is quite introductory. Each of the chapters is rather self-contained and many details of derivations are provided. Exercises presented at the end of each chapter make it a perfect graduate-level text.
This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in meteorology, oceanography and related fields who are interested in tackling fundamental problems in dynamical oceanography and climate dynamics.

This book describes the methods used to construct general circulation models of the atmosphere, and how such models perform in applications relating to the real climate and environmental systems. The author describes the fundamental dynamics of the atmospheric circulation, modelling of the general circulation, and applications of GCMs. The book consits of three parts:
- Part 1 summarizes the physical processes involved, including basic equations, waves and instabilities;
- Part 2 covers atmospheric structures, including various types of one- and two-dimensional structures and circulations;
- Part 3 describes the basic notions for construction of general circulation models of the atmosphere and their applications.
The text includes an appendix incorporating the basic data and mathematical formulae required to enable readers to construct GCMs for themselves.

The word holor is a term coined by the authors to describe a mathematical entity that is made up of one or more independent quantities, and includes complex numbers, scalars, vectors, matrices, tensors, quaternions, and other hypernumbers. Holors, thus defined, have been known for centuries but each has been developed more or less independently, accompanied by separate nomenclature and theory. This book demonstrates how these complicated subjects can be made simple by using a single notation that applies to all holors, both tensor and nontensor. The authors consider all possible types of holors and develop holor algebra and holor calculus in the most general sense. Thus the reader will learn to develop a new holor that fits the application, rather than forcing an application onto a holor representation that is known but that does not perfectly describe the application. The discussion includes nontensors having no transformation and holors that transform in more complicated ways than allowed with ordinary tensors. This opens up the possibility to devise a holor for a new physical application, without being limited to a few conventional types of holor. This book should establish a method by which students and teachers can learn vector and tensor analysis via a uniform treatment. Graduate students and professionals in engineering, physics. applied mathematics, chemistry, biology, psychology, and other analytical sciences should find this to be a useful and innovative work.

While the notation at first seems burdensome, it resolves to be one of the elegant strengths in this groundbreaking but underappreciated text. If you've experienced tensors, you will wish you'd started here. While the text is of necessity dense, and rife with formulas, notation, and peculiarly named categories of holors, it is obviously not meant for anyone without a great deal of math already under their belt. It clarifies previously ambiguous distinctions under tensor theory, and leads to many "aha" moments. Rigorous and comprehensive. The only book on the subject, literally.

A must for every SR/GR fan. Worth the price. This book is very well organized and easy for someone to understand after a decent intorduction to vector calculus. It includes a well writen historical perspective, a detailed intorduction to tensor nomenclature, an above average treatment of basic tensor theory (transformations, direvitaves, and even integrals), and a strong introduction to non-metric (linearly-connected) spaces.

I think that the french version of Night Flight was good, but confusing because of all the detail given. To understand it fully you must have a high french vocabulary. It was meaningful and fun to read.
