    5 out of 5 stars Field notes of a wonky biologist . . ........2005-07-29

There are books by scientists and nature writers that inspire an attitude of awe and wonder, and they do it with a graceful style of coolly elegant prose. This is not one of those books. Janovy, a University of Nebraska biologist specializing in parasitology, is often awestruck by nature, but his style is wonky and comically ironic, using the kind of classroom lecture technique meant to engage undergraduates by seeming to be anything but reverential about subjects he loves, enjoys, and deeply cares about.

Unscientifically, he personalizes and humanizes the species he discusses (termites, snails, fish, birds) and even the places where he and his students do their field work - the Platte River, the waters of man-made Lake McConaughy, the streams and marshes that feed into it, and the Nebraska Sandhills. And there are references as well to beer drinking, the Doors, and Waylon Jennings. He refers to himself sometimes in the third person and easily reveals his own embarrassments and frustrations as his attempts to unravel nature's mysteries are sometimes less than successful. Waxing philosophical at nearly every turn, he eventually reaches a state of mind he calls the "Ogallala blues."

Meanwhile, like a great teacher who inspires with his enthusiasms, he opens a world unknown to anyone unaware of the subtle and complex relationships between species. And he's able to do this by focusing on just a few life forms, including one-celled animals, in a small area of western Nebraska. Janovy invites you to take the nearest exit ramp within range of open fields and streams - even a patch of weeds - and just feast your senses on the flora and fauna. His book is full of fascinating material for the nonbiologist and a pleasure to read.

    5 out of 5 stars Beyond Biology.......2004-03-24

This book is a quiet masterpiece. I am not a biologist, but I did not find the book too specific or too technical. Janovy sees lessons everywhere. He teases them from his subjects, his students, his experiences. When he wades into Whitetail Creek with his twenty biology students, he changes the lives of those that follow him, whether in the water or on the page. He writes of the Rock Wren, "Live in a place where you are not tested, and you are living in a place of inferior quality." True, the book is about parasites, and his treatment of parasites is fascinating. But the parasites are packed in among his observations about human being and place and the workings of the world. His writing style is graceful and enticing. I can't wait to read more.

4 out of 5 stars Keith County Journal.......2003-09-17

This story is very specific in its content, which is great for a biologist like myself, but because it is so specific it may appeal only to a limited audience. I especially enjoyed the field trips described and felt I was there, leaky waders and all, plus battles with barbed wire and seeking permission from land owwners to trespass their property.

The use of common names in addition to scientific names may have contributed to its readability. More illustrations would help too. I recommend this book to anyone interested in biology, particularly those over age 15.

                                    Product Description

This book describes or summarizes the main advances of recent years in the paleogeography, stratigraphy, structure, petrology, geochronology, and geophysics of many parts of the northern Appalachians, particularly New England. The collection of papers by active investigators provides a unique guide to what is known about this critical segment of a major orogenic belt, and to many new interpretations whose implications extend beyond the area covered by the book. The book is designed to fill the very real present need for the collection, in a single reference volume, of authoritative statements on the present state of knowledge in areas and topics that are the subjects of current or recent study, and for which significant and tangible results have emerged. An initial series of papers treats paleogeographic relationships system by system; these are essentially review articles, setting the stage for what follows, but contain much new information. A large number of papers discuss specific areas or geologic features. Several papers present new interpretations of relationships once considered established; the decipherment of large Alpine-type recumbent structures in the Connecticut Valley region is an exciting development only hinted at in the existing 1iterature. Papers in the last two groups discuss a number of different topics from a regional point of view: metamorphism, geochronology, gravity, magnetics, and heat flow. A new generalized geologic fold-out map of the region (1 ;2,500,000), compiled primarily from the many recent State and Provincial maps, provides a frame of reference for the convenience of the reader.

                                        Book Description

Extractive Metallurgy of Rare Earths compiles information from scattered sources often available only to specialists. This book provides a complete and usable survey of the rare earth resources, extraction, and production of numerous end products in both laboratory and industrial settings. The authors present the latest developments in rare earth extraction, production, and processing technology, including ore processing and separation of individual rare earths, preparation of alloys, magnets, refrigerants, and thin film deposition, reduction, refining, and ultra-purification of rare earth elements. A thorough account of the atomic, physical, and reactive properties of these elements convey complex metallurgical principles with clarity. All chapters draw attention to the metals that illustrate the applicable techniques used in extraction, reduction, refining, and preparation of rare earth compounds and alloys. Types of deposits and their origins throughout the world accompanied by a review of countries that actively participate in rare earth production show a dynamic, multi-faceted industry throughout. This book provides a ubiquitous source of industry expertise and objectives. It offers valuable scientific knowledge of physicochemical principles, process design and procedures in the preparation and purification of rare earths from minerals and ores to useful compounds and alloys.

5 out of 5 stars So Much More Than an Account of Rare Earth Extraction.......2007-09-06

The title of this excellent book is a misnomer, as it covers far more than the beneficiation of rare earth ores. It is an up-to-date mini-encyclopedia on the lanthanides.

Gupta and Krishnamurthy begin with a historical survey of the discovery of each rare earth element. From then on, they describe the chemical properties of each REE in considerable detail. They also elaborate on the properties of the major REE-bearing minerals, followed by major types of REE-bearing deposits.

Gupta and Krishnamurthy engage in a nation-by-nation survey of REE production, and then make projections for the future. One may be surprised to learn that South Africa, currently a very modest producer of REE, has the potential to become the world's leader in this regard (p. 126).

The chapters on REE-ore beneficiation are very detailed. They include many helpful flow-charts to help the reader visualize the steps involved. There is also a chapter on the refining of rare earth metals.

Finally, there is extensive discussion of the many and growing application of rare earths. These include magnets, magnetic refrigeration, specialized alloys, superconductors, and much more.

In Comanche Dawn Mike Blakely does for the Comanche nation what Ruth Bebe Hills did for the Sioux in Hanta Yo. This landmark novel is the first time the story has been told from the point of view of the Comanches themselves. We witness the rise of one of the most powerful mounted nations in history through the eyes of a young warrior named Horseback. Born on the very day that the first horse comes to his people, Horseback matures into a leader of unquestionable courage and vision. He assumes powerful medicine granted to him by spirits encountered on a grueling vision quest, and he takes Teal, the most beautiful young woman of his tribe, as his wife and lifelong love. Guided by forces more powerful and dangerous then even he can control or explain, Horseback will face death time and time again with only his medicine and Teal to stand beside him.Failure will mean destruction not only for himself, but for his people. Success will mean unimaginable wealth for his new nation. Ancient enemies will seek to destroy him. Strange newcomers with pale skin and treacherous ways will attempt to enslave him. Even his own inner spirit powers threaten always to consume him, should he fail to respect them. Only the bravest of True Humans dare to follow Horseback on his great adventure down a trail that can lead only to glory or annihilation.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great novel.......2006-11-21

This book is long at 560 pages. That can be hell if the book is not well-written. Luckily this book was well-written. There are some minor errors, one being on p. 197 when the author mistakenly confuses the Indian tribes he is talking about. He meant to write Inday but wrote Wolf people. I emailed the author through his website with some questions about this book, but he never answered, and as of this writing, it's been several weeks. So for that I am removing 1 star. I can't vouch for the authenticity of everything in this book, which takes place in the late 1600s to early 1700s. But as a novel, it is damned good.

Oh, the story... Well, it's about the Shoshones who discover horses and eventually split into two different tribes, the new one being the Comanche nation (by the way, historically the Comanches did break away from the Shoshones...the who, how and why being the author's invention). There is intertribal fighting, some religious overtones (presented in the con) as the Spanish try to convert the "savages" and lots of adventure. Also, the author obviously knows a thing or two about horses. So if you are looking for a good book to read and think you can handle 560 pages, go for it.

4 out of 5 stars SWEET AS HONEY.......2002-02-21

WHAT A REMARKABLE WAY TO BEGIN A BOOK. MIKE BLAKELY HAS A UNBELIEVEABLE SENSE OF THE HISTORY OF THE COMANCHE PEOPLE. I REALLY ENJOY THE DETAIL HE PUTS INTO HIS DESCRIPTIONS. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A VERY PASSIONATE MAN THAT PUTS EVERYTHING HE HAS INTO HIS WORK. I ADMIRE THE ENERGY PUT INTO THIS WORK. I CAN PICTURE MYSELF IN AMONGST THESE PEOPLE, RIDING WITH THEM, AND WATCHING THIS "BIG DOG" RUN THROUGH CAMP. HIS ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS PHENOMENAL. WELL DONE. THIS BOOK IS REALLY SWEET AS HONEY.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Blakely could succeed in any world.......2001-08-20

Howdy folks, I'm James Drury. I used to play the Virginian on NBC television, and most recently I've taken to reading books on audio. I had to chuckle with surprise when I read the review below by Dan Huff, who compares Blakely's writing to Kirby Jonas'. I know both of these men, and both are great writers, although their work is highly varied from each other. In this book, Comanche Dawn, Blakely does write differently than some of his books I've seen in the past. It's more of a literary novel, and a good one in its own realm. Blakely plays a mean guitar and has one of the best singing voices in America, in my opinion, so his talent should take him far. Read this book to see what it was like for the Comanches and their best friend, the horse. It is a deeper book than Blakely's earlier stuff, but just as enjoyable. And if you want to compare him to Kirby Jonas yourself I would suggest you try out Jonas' Legend of the Tumbleweed, also available on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Spanish Horse! Alive in History ........2000-03-05

If you love Horses, you've got to read "Comanche Dawn"! MIke Blakely has done a tremendous job researching and developing and "causing to come to life" Comanche History. I normaly don't care for western novels. However, as a horselover, Blakely had me totally mesmarized. First, because he has accurately portrayed the appearance of the Spanish Horse in America. Second, because he masterfully developed and integrated history and characters so well that I just couldn't put the book down. Finally, as a natural horseman he has me wanting to ride like the Comanche, with war bridle, Comanche loops, et al. I can hardly wait for his sequel to see how the Comanche and the Spanish Horse continue to write early American History!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, one of Blakely's best.......2000-01-19

This book is a tremendous coup by an author who already has a lot of notches in his gun. Blakely started out writing more traditional westerns, and all of them were very good. This isn't a traditional western, so I was veering from what I normally read, but this is just as good and enthralling from beginning to end. Give Blakely a chance, whether you read westerns or not. If you like this book, also try Kirby Jonas's Death of an Eagle. These two make a great pair, one on the Shoshones, one on their cousins the Comanches.
