Book Description
The esophagus is a relatively simple though vital organ. Beyond its role of propelling food from the pharynx to the stomach by a propulsive contraction wave representing the esophageal phase of deglutition, it is more and more recognized as a sensory organ from which a variety of respiratory and cardiovascular reflexes can be triggered, thus cooperating with the larynx in protecting the lower airways from aspiration. In ruminants, there is additional antiperistalsis for regurgitation. During emesis, the esophagus is a merely passive conduit except for some antiperistalsis in its upper part. In the interval between swallows, both oral and aboral ends of the esophagus are tonically closed by the upper and lower esophageal sphincters, UES and LES respectively, while the tubular esophagus is flaccid and partly filled with air. Despite this apparent simplicity, neuronal control of esophageal functions is considerably complex.

Book Description
Subsequent to the profiling of organometal(loid) compounds in important biogeogenic and anthropogenic deposits, the importance of this class of compounds for human health are evaluated by the analysis of both physicochemical and biological formation, distribution and transformation processes. Multidisciplinary articles written by experts from disciplines as diverse as biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology, analytical chemistry, microbiology and genetics estimate the global levels of biogeogenic and anthropogenic emissions of organometal(loid) compounds, and thus obtain an insight to processes which influence the genesis, as well as the distribution and stability of organometal(loid) species and their interaction with each other and other matrix compounds. The authors evaluate various environmentally relevant sources from a toxicological point of view, in order to identify potential "hot spots" of organometal(loid)s, which can negatively influence ecosystems and human health.

One of the Great Physicists of our Time.......2007-05-14
Hans Bethe was one of the greatest physicists of the last 100 years. This book, with its many different sections, each writen by a different person, is a wonderful way "to get to know" Hans Bethe. I read, every bit of it, and found the text most enjoyable and illuminating. I recommenmd the book to other physicists and, especially, to young folk. They could do worse than have Bethe as a role model!
Book Description
The Christmas Box phenomenon continues with this special audio edition of the 19th-century classic Christmas tale featured in the multimillion-copy #1 best seller The Christmas Box and read by its author, Richard Paul Evans.
"Here is a charming Christmas tale. Read this to your little one.' I took the book from her outstretched arm and examined the title -- Christmas Every Day by William Dean Howells." So recalls the narrator in Richard Paul Evans' The Christmas Box, as the elderly heroine Mary Parkin begins to help him see the importance of spending time with his daughter and leads him to an understanding of the true meaning of Christmas in the story that has captured the hearts of millions of listeners and readers.
Fans of The Christmas Box -- and anyone with a special holiday wish -- will listen with delight as Evans reads Howells' 1892 classic tale of a little girl who learns why Christmas comes but once a year...and how strange life would be if it really could be Christmas Every Day!
Customer Reviews:
Not Christmas without this story.......2001-01-30
When she was in the third grade my older sister bought a little book of christmas stories with the nickles she had saved by not having milk at break time. "Christmas Every Day" is our favorite story from this carefully preserved little book. Our mother still reads "Christmas Every Day" every year for her grandchildren. Though we are all grown we still enjoy the story too. Even my oldest sister's hyper-active 7 year old sit's quietly for his grandma's reading of "Christmas Every Day."
It was a great relief for me to find that Amazon.com had "Christmas Every Day" because the little book my sister brought home in the early 1960's is quickly becoming too fragile to handle. Thanks Amazon.com, someday I hope to read "Christmas Every Day" to my grandchildren.
Customer Reviews:
Great for the pre-schooler and grade-schooler in your home!.......2007-08-15
I bought this for seasonal crafts a young child could do. I have another book which is similar but for everyday crafts, Household Items by Kathy Ross. If you're into recycling, this book is ideal for you. It would be rough trying to assemble the required items if you have a large group without cooperation from others or time. The other items required are the basics like construction paper, glitter, scissors, glue and then things like dried beans, colored pipe cleaners, and straw. I didn't see any copyable patterns so it looks like an adult would have to do those sorts of things.
As I bought the book for Halloween section and I have only glanced at the other sections...here goes.
This section is full of easy ideas from the preschooler to the older child. They could easily be supervised by a responsible teen. They look easy to do, but would be impressive to the child as well as the adult when completed.
There are decorated pumpkins without cutting, lots of cats and ghosts to make, and basic no-sew costumes to wear from adult or older children's clothing.
Great Crafts for Every Holiday!.......2007-01-20
This is a fantastic book for parents, teachers, or anyone who likes to make crafts. Moms and teachers especially are always looking for ways to make crafts that don't cost much. This book shows you how to make really cute and original projects out of things we would recycle (or throw away!). I recommend it highly!
Great craft book for kids.......2005-03-14
I got this book for my 5 year old daughter and 5 year old niece. They both love to make things and loved the items in this book. My daughter wanted to make so many things for each holiday, we didn't come close to making all of them. There are some items that are a bit lame, but the others make the book worth it. I only had to buy a few low cost craft items like felt squares, pipe cleaners, ribbon, and the like to make the items in the book. Everything else we had in the house (egg cartons, construction paper, material scraps, ...).
If you have "crafty kids" this is a good idea book for them. It would also be good for preschools, elementary schools, and churches.
Book Description
For centuries, the Catholic Church has offered an abundance of splendid traditions that extend religious and spiritual practice into daily life. Now, Meredith Gould reintroduces these customs and rituals to modern Roman Catholics.
Using the liturgical calendar, The Catholic Home provides familiar and new ways to celebrate each season and its special days. Gould reviews major holy days, select saints’ days, familiar prayers, and suggests meaningful ways to prepare as a family for such sacraments as Baptism, Confirmation, First Eucharist, and Matrimony.
This book includes a concise history of each ritual and clarifies the meaning behind it by highlighting celebrations of Catholic holidays from different parts of the globe. Your family will learn to make Advent wreaths, Jesse trees, St. Lucy’s crowns, King’s cakes, All Souls altars, traditional foods, and participate in family devotions.
Throughout The Catholic Home, Gould’s down-to-earth practicality and sense of humor give the activities she describes modern relevance no matter how ancient their origins. Excerpts from the official Catechism of the Catholic Church are included to illuminate Church doctrine on matters of faith and ritual. This indispensable guide will appeal to Catholics young and old and inspire beloved family traditions to be handed down from one generation to the next.

Great Gift.......2007-07-20
I ordered this for my sister as a gift. She suggested the book and I had no trouble finding it on Amazon. Thanks!
Great Handbook for families.......2005-11-18
I love this book! I grew up in a Catholic family and in Catholic schools. However, that did not prepare me for passing along Catholic traditions to my own children and to my converted husband. The fear of offending anyone(especially my non-Catholic relatives) made me a little hesitant to "let religious identity permeate our home". Gould's book encourages and instructs on how to do so. She has specific ideas, traditions, and even recipes for living a richer life within the Church.
a great tool for families.......2005-10-16
If you are interested in Catholic customs and traditions for your family, this is a wonderful book. Full of interesting facts for different feast days and practical ways to celebrate in the home. A wonderful tool for the family or individual!
Good, some errors though.......2005-04-12
I checked this book out at the library. I was happy to find a catholic ritual book for lay people which talked about celebrating the liturgical year at home as well as preparing for the sacraments before attending church. I have to say that I too noticed the colors the author listed for many of the days are incorrect. I think the author used green whenever she was unsure of the color. In the Roman Catholic Church the color green is used specificaly for ordinary time. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states "Green is used for Ordinary Time and on ferias, GIRM,no.308 c.
Overlooking this mistake I think the book is an excelent resource for catholics who keep a home altar/shrine, and who wish to participate more fully in their faith.
Greetings from the author!.......2005-02-13
The new paperback edition of The Catholic Home has its own special Preface; more material, including an Appendix that reveals all the titles ascribed to Mary; corrections for liturgical color errors; and an index to help everyone (including me!) find stuff.
I am very pleased with the way this updated edition turned out and grateful to have received glowing endorsements from national leaders in family catechesis and adult formation. I am also grateful to readers who have taken the time to send kind comments to me directly.
My hope and prayer is that The Catholic Home inspires a greater interest in those aspects of Catholic culture that support our Catholic Christian faith. Please feel free to contact me if you'd like me to visit your parish!

Customer Reviews:
Great gift book for a friend for yourself.......2007-10-04
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (9/07)
This is a perfect gift book, or a book to own and keep on the bedside table year round. Although the title includes Christmas, the words of devotion are intended to keep the spirit of Christmas throughout the year.
The author, Helen Steiner Rice, died in 1981; however, her devotional effort lives on. Her works are categorized into sections: Celebration, Joy, Giving, Prayer, and The Greatest Gift. I was inspired by the first narrative in the book titled "Let Us Live Christmas Every Day." The author questions: Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the world of Christmas all year long?
Too often we succumb to the commercialism of the season, rather than "allow the principle attributes of Christmas - selflessness, humility, hope, love, generosity, and kindness - remain. The joyful, peaceful, and abundant heart is the one that celebrates Christmas every day." And, that's exactly what this little book helps us do. The poetry and readings are filled with incentive to truly keep the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the year.
Give "Living Christmas Every Day" as a gift to yourself or someone special. It is a keeper!

Employing a humorous modern-day fable style that he both created and perfected, Bradley Trevor Greive (BTG) pairs his witty prose with captivating black-and-white animal photos to offer readers an uplifting antidote to quell gift-wrapping rage, mall meltdowns, stay-too-long-inlaw-itis, and other seasonal joys and jeers.BTG implores readers to recall Christmas's best attributes and make them a part of everyday life. "In doing so," BTG explains, "we make our lives and the lives of those we come into contact with much more enjoyable and far more rewarding."
