    Book Description

Put the world of GIS data resources at your command—

GIS users routinely encounter key questions about the data needed for their projects: Where did the data come from? Is this the best data available? How can the data be loaded to make it work? What about creating original data? With a broad range of GIS data options to choose from, knowing how to find, select, and use the most appropriate resources for different purposes is absolutely essential in order to keep costs down and make the most of the technology.

Filled with crucial information for today's GIS users, this book offers a comprehensive, straightforward reporting on GIS data sources--what they are, hot to find them, and how to determine the right source for a given project. Beginning with a thorough review of the basic GIS data types and groups, GIS Data Sources shows hot to define specific data needs for a project and accurately envision how the data will look and act once it is applied.

The next step is to locate and obtain the data. Here the book presents a wealth of data sources, with added guidance on creating original data and important information on suitable applications for different types of data. Nuts-and-bolts material on data formats, media, compression, and downloading helps users acquire and use GIS data easily and avoid the technical snags that can slow a project down.

In addition, the book's extensive resource listings provide details on where to find GIS information on the Internet, and a complementary Web site (www.gisdatasources.com) provides further data links and updates to help jump-start your projects.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide to GIS data!.......2001-04-03

I'm new to the world of GIS and bought this book to learn more about the various data types I was encountering on a daily basis. Not only has this guide explained what the different formats are, but it also explained why there are different formats, what each format is best at, how to convert between the different types, how to go about capturing data when none exists, and where I can find data (both public and commercial). It also has an excellent section on project planning which helps you define your needs and select the most appropriate data.

The website keeps the data source material up-to-date.

Succinctly written, it's the perfect desktop companionfor anyone who works in GIS. I recommend it highly, and wish I had a copy when I was struggling with this stuff in college.

      4 out of 5 stars nice alternative.......2005-03-08

As GIS continues to grow in many usages, it was inevitable that someone [actually a bunch of blokes] would consider an open source GIS package. The book describes one, GRASS; and specifically version 5.3. It offers many visualisation conveniences of the prioprietary packages. Very easy and intuitive usages.

GRASS also relieves some of the burden of designing a GIS database that the visualisation draws upon. Though you be aware that the emphasis is on the latter.

The book does raise the issue of what is needed for you to use a prioprietary package, in lieu of GRASS. Especially if the "entry level" capabilities of the current GRASS are enough for your needs.

      Book Description

With the help of the Internet and accompanying tools, creating and publishing online maps has become easier and rich with options. A city guide web site can use maps to show the location of restaurants, museums, and art venues. A business can post a map for reaching its offices. The state government can present a map showing average income by area. Developers who want to publish maps on the web often discover that commercial tools cost too much and hunting down the free tools scattered across Internet can use up too much of your time and resources. Web Mapping Illustrated shows you how to create maps, even interactive maps, with free tools, including MapServer, OpenEV, GDAL/OGR, and PostGIS. It also explains how to find, collect, understand, use, and share mapping data, both over the traditional Web and using OGC-standard services like WFS and WMS. Mapping is a growing field that goes beyond collecting and analyzing GIS data. Web Mapping Illustrated shows how to combine free geographic data, GPS, and data management tools into one resource for your mapping information needs so you don't have to lose your way while searching for it. Remember the fun you had exploring the world with maps? Experience the fun again with Web Mapping Illustrated. This book will take you on a direct route to creating valuable maps.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of web mapping.......2007-02-18

This book is readable, nice to look at, and does a good job of pulling a lot of information into one place. Finding information about the different GIS packages in the web is a challenge. If you don't know GIS already, like me, you're lost. This book helped me find my bearings, and in no time I was able to take shapefiles, do processing on them, and display the results in a web page dynamically.
The problem with this book is that it's fairly shallow. It will give you a couple of basic examples of how to use some pieces of software, but for anything more complicated, you have to look elsewhere. There is frustratingly little information on mapscript, but, overall, I'd say the book fulfills its role.

2 out of 5 stars Great if you know nothing about free software - otherwise avoid the book..........2006-06-30

To be short and to the point... the title basically covers the primary issue I had with the book... I felt most of the book could be summed up in about 20 pages but yet it was still a full book of how to go get a free piece of software, connect a GPS, and chart where you were going...

Note: I was most likely disappointed because I was truly looking for a much more technical discussion on how GPS databases work and how to decode GIS information. In the past when I have prucased books form the publisher they were much more in depth on technical aspects of the systems, data, and so forth. In this case it was a discussion of how to sue free software and a GPS... no truly what I had in mind.

Oh, well... other I'm sure will enjoy it... just didn't fill the bill for me...

4 out of 5 stars MapServer, PostGIS, OGR etc........2006-03-24

Author doesn't assume you know anything. Examples are UNIX, but he explains very well. He doesn't talk down to Windows users (apparently Mapserver installs easily on Windows). Very exciting. Explains map projections well. Good reading on the airplane. If you're an open source geek and/or a GIS person and a UNIX enthusiast, you'll be very happy.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro book to open source web mapping.......2006-03-22

This is an interesting, well written intro book for open source web mapping enthusiasts. I found some helpful tips and also appreciated the traps to avoid sections. The material gave me a greater knowledge and appreciation of MapServer in particular allowing me to move onto more in depth books quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference on mapping.......2005-12-02

With revolutionary technology, Google Earth now lets computer users zoom through space to specific sites all over the world. Mapping is also making great strides in the law enforcement world, where geographic information systems (GIS) have been replacing pin maps. Systems such as New York City's COMPSTAT have been highly successful in mapping and depicting virtually any combination of crime/arrest locations, crime hot spots, and other information in real time.

While not specifically written for law enforcement, Web Mapping Illustrated is a valuable guide for those who are interested in using maps and other GIS tools. The Internet hosts many open-source mapping tools, making the creation and publishing of online maps much easier and more effective.

Web Mapping Illustrated is written for those wishing to avoid expensive commercial software mapping systems and instead use open-source and other free tools. The book details the use of free mapping software and tools such as MapServer, GDAL, OpenEV, and PostGIS. It also explains how to find, collect, understand, use, and share various mapping data sources.

All 14 chapters are well written and organized, progressing from the basics to the publication of sophisticated interactive Web maps. Fittingly, the book makes effective use of numerous full-color maps and software screenshots

              Book Description

This important textbook is based on, though independent of, an educational TV series to be broadcast on public television in the United States. Its aim is to guide students and general readers to an understanding of how the physical world works; physics is presented as a human endeavour, with historical development forming a thread throughout the text. The prerequisites are minimal, only basic algebra and trigonometry since the necessary calculus is developed in the text, with physics providing the motivation. New concepts are introduced at the natural, logical point with many historical references to place physics in a social perspective. Many topics from twentieth-century physics are included, for example energy, low temperature physics, relativity and black holes. The book is attractively and profusely illustrated and will be welcomed by students and also by general readers for whom this will be a stimulating alternative to other, less-thorough treatments.

Written in the same spirit and with the same vivid style as The Mechanical Universe: Introduction to Mechanics and Heat, this textbook is aimed at undergraduate students of physics and engineering. Thus the authors go into certain questions more deeply, are more concerned in describing the scientific development and consider more fully the verification, implication and justification of the ideas discussed than in the lower level book. Many more specific examples are given and each chapter ends with a problem set (a teacher’s manual will be available). The mathematical tools are of course more fully developed, as befits a calculus-based course in classical mechanics.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books of All time.......2000-12-28

I came across the Mechanical Universe telecourses after my third year of College and really liked them.

One day I discovered this book, and then had to buy its sequel.

They are awesome in their storytelling ability and in the clarity they bring to some very difficult concepts. The depth of content is simply HUGE, from Integration and Differentiation to Thermodynamics and Quantum Mechanics.. I can't wait for the telecourses to come out on DVD.

In the meantime, Annenburg also sells the series on video tape to consumers, and any books by Goodstein and Apostol who contributed to this book are similarly astounding.

Consider this a recommendation for casual reading, I already had my grades for the college courses and developed my fanaticism "after" school was out.

Trust me these are to Physics and Mathematics, what "Cosmos" was to Astronomy.

4 out of 5 stars An clear presentation of mechanics.......1999-09-25

I saw the excellent Mechanical Universe Television series while I was in high school and I recently purchased this book. I've just finished reading this book and am simultaneously doing problems in Schaum 3000 Physics problems. This is a great reader to use as it puts the physics in the historical context and traces the reasoning these great scientists used in inducing their conclusions in the first place. The explanations are mostly very clear. Some of the historical interpretations are questionable but they do not detract from the overall value of the historical approach. This is how all physics should be taught.

                              Book Description

Anyone who has sampled even a few of the most commonly read Greek texts will have encountered pollution. The pollution of bloodshed is a frequent theme of tragedy: Orestes is driven mad; Oedipus brings plague upon all Thebes. In historical texts we find cities intervening in the internal affairs of others to `drive out the pollution', or making war on account of it. Political orators represent their opponents as polluting demons. Purity is a constant concern in ritual texts, and any Greek underwent many small purifications in his everyday life. Certain abnormal religious movements of the archaic age made `purification' the path to felicity in the afterlife. First published in hardback in 1983, Miasma is the first work in English to treat this theme in detail.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding ancient concept of pollution.......2004-05-25

I really enjoyed reading this book. If you want to get inside the head of an ancient Greek, to understand what miasma was all about, then read this book. It has been beneficial to me in my practice of Hellnismos as well. It goes into detail about *why* washing your hands in the lustral water is important, etc. This notion now has a more central influence on the way I practice my own religion.

5 out of 5 stars Miasma -- Not for the Faint of Heart.......1997-10-01

"Miasma" (or me-ahz-MAH' as the ancients would say it, we think) is a subject and a book that will be of most interest to scholars of ancient Greek culture, religion and language, as well as to students of comparative languages and literatures. It is a dense but well-written text by Parker, an important and recognized scholar. Organized conceptually, the book begins with an introduction to related and apparently overlapping terms: miasma, agos, enages, katharsos, hosios, hagnos, and the like. These terms can be examined in terms of how they are thought to relate to birth/death rituals, lustrations, the shedding of blood, purification of holy sites, etc. This would be quite enough but Parker's erudition ups the book's score. He analyzes each concept and situation in terms of the various genres of his sources and in terms of the time periods in which tehy were written. These are the materials from which we have derived our notion of daily life in ancient Greece, and Parker is well-versed in the entire canon of Greek dramas, philosophy, history, cult records, oratory, mythology, and on and on. The author's observations and conclusions are surprising and very valuable not only because of his close and careful of the citations that illuminate his theories, but because the care taken itself reminds us of the danger of making broad assumptions based on a narrow review of primary sources. This is a major text in the field of Greek religion and it's been a long time coming. I wish he'd put forth his own hypotheses at the beginning of each section, which would make note-taking a lot easier, but it would deprive the reader of the carefully-reasoned arguments that lead him -- and us -- to his conclusions. Kudos.
