Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
Cecie Starr is the most successful author in non-majors biology because of her clear and engaging writing, trend-setting art, and unparalleled media. BIOLOGY TODAY AND TOMORROW, her most concise text, provides a precise, issues-oriented approach and "solves" some of the toughest course challenges: engaging students, linking concepts from chapter to chapter, easily monitoring students' progress and simplifying lecture prep. Show students how biology matters: opening each chapter with engaging essays on hot issues and related online voting, the text highlights the connections between biology and real-life. Online exercises promote critical thinking about issues students will face as consumers, parents and citizens. Link concepts from chapter to chapter: since students have a difficult time linking concepts, the authors created a new "linking" tool. A list at the start of each chapter reminds students of related topics that were explained earlier. Within chapters, a key icon identifies cross-references to relevant sections in earlier chapters. As students work through the text, they see how topics build upon one another. Monitor students' progress with ease: BiologyNow? offers diagnostic quizzes with automatically graded results that flow directly into your instructor grade book (iLrn, WebCT or BlackBoard). And, to assess students' progress instantly with in-class quizzes and polls, you can use JoinIn on TurningPoint content and software. Enjoy easier lecture prep: The new PowerLecture tool integrates all electronic chapter assets - art, photos, animations, videos, links to InfoTrac articles, web links, bulleted text slides, and everything else you need into each chapter's lecture slides. This "buffet" of media resources?arranged by chapter section?is at your fingertips.

Book Description
A renowned mathematician shows how the "science of surprise" can help explain some of the most inexplicable phenomena in science, nature, the arts, the economy, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Nice read.......2007-05-22
Casti says, maxims and aphorisms with opposite meaning can both be true in a complex world. Example, people fall in love because: A. 'birds of a feather flock together'.. B.'opposites attract'. Great exercise for clearing out cobwebs in the mind.
Good intro to some complex ideas.......2002-04-30
I found this to be an easy to read introduction to current hot topics in science and math. Catastrophe theory, Complexity, Chaos, and emergence. There is also an excellent listing of resources with commentary in the back of the book, called, "to dig deeper". I am an engineer with an MBA, so found a number of the examples very interesting. For the curious, (or less technically adept), this is very well written. Mr. Casti goes quickly from theory to "real world" examples. His illustrations are also very helpful to understanding the basic principles. Most books on complexity contain way too much math for the average reader, or are very simplistic, "Ubiquity" as an example. I think you will find a nice balance here.
Crap. Total crap........2001-01-10
Forgive me for the inarticulate title, but that about sums it up. In this book, John Casti uses misleading chapter titles and open-ended explanations to new scientific theories to explain what he thinks should be the foundation of the "science of surprise".
Now, don't get me wrong: open-ended material is not always a bad thing. Especially with new theories on chaos and related subjects that have not yet been given a strong leg to stand on; it is great to give readers a little insight so they can come up with some of their own conclusions. But there is a difference between presenting an interesting question then suggestion some well-thoughtout solutions and presenting an interesting question and jotting down a quick answer by using unproven assumptions.
One example of this is when he explains the irrationality of common sense and bases almost his entire argument on the fact that many people will take $100 dollars today instead of $120 dollars next week and $1,300,000 in a year instead of $100 today. If you read that whole chapter, you will find little more than this explaining why common sense is a faulty way of thinking other than an accident made by an unattentive engineer. Granted, I agree (for my own reasons), but these two situations are not a very good explanation for why common sense in decision making is unwise.
And from what I read and skimmed through, basing solutions off of unstable assumptions and unique situations seems to be what Casti is best at. He uses many words to explain some of the simplest theories in this scientific genre and too few words for the most complex. His thoughts hold little order and several times chapters and paragraphs don't even finish the thoughts that he starts.
I am giving it two stars because eventually he does correctly rattle off some of the basic theories, and he includes a couple of interesting situations and questions.
If you want a good read from the area of unpredictable science, try Chaos : Making a New Science by James Gleick.
Some interesting points, but very uneven........1999-09-28
While parts of this book were very thought-provoking, too many details were either left out or skimmed over to allow this book to stand alone. For example, the formula the author supplies to calculate the eccentricity of a simplex couldn't possibly produce the results he gives in the adjoining table; some are infinite, and the formula as he states is specifically designed to avoid such results. If you're really interested in catastophe theory or chaos theory, make sure you read this book where you have other reference materials on hand.

From the author: This study examines some possible discriminations in housework allocation. Data were obtained from both partners of the couples (a total of 179 couples). Each provided information concerning the time they contributed to some specific housework, which resulted in a detailed description of the housework allocation. The results reveal that women almost always spent more time than men on housework, but that the proportion of housework done by women is reduced compared with previous studies. Variance and multiple-regression analyses show that housework allocation tends to be a complicated problem: the explained variance proves very small when linear analyses are conducted using the standard independent variables.

Book Description
When free-spirited Batsheva moves into the close-knit Orthodox community of Memphis, Tennessee, the already precarious relationship between the Ladies Auxiliary and their teenage daughters is shaken to the core. In this extraordinary novel, Tova Mirvis takes us into the fascinating and insular world of the Memphis Orthodox Jews, one ripe with tradition and contradiction. Warm and wise, enchanting and funny, The Ladies Auxiliary brilliantly illuminates the timeless struggle between mothers and daughters, family and self, religious freedom and personal revelation, honoring the past and facing the future. An unforgettable story of uncommon atmosphere, profound insight, and winning humor, The Ladies Auxiliary is a triumphant work of fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Liberal ExMormon .......2007-07-15
Tova Mirvas does a great job of showing the difference between organized religion and spirituality. The books illistrates over and over again, letter of the law versus the spirit of the law. Most importantly she makes you look at what is the motivation for living strict orthodox rules. Basheva, makes those in the small close knit Jewish society, rethink thier rules and norms. It is too hard for some (most importantly the youth) to stay in thier sanitized bubble of thought with such a progressive women amonst them full of vitality. Can you keep you indivuality within a close knit relgious community. I suggested this book to a group of conservative religious women who were in a book club. This was the best book to read about a different community but that was dealing with all the modern day dilemnas. Who to raise your children with morals and religious knoledge and can it be done with freedom, choice and happiness or should it just be done out of blind obedience?
Good book.......2007-05-12
The title on this book didn't sound very exciting to read, but it ended up being a favorite. It is clean and it great for a book club.
Perfect Read.......2007-01-14
I thought this book was wonderful! The people in the novel are all so real and quirky! Some parts were a little hard to understand because of terminology, but I really found the book making me think and evaluate the kind of person I am.
The Ladies Auxiliary.......2007-01-06
This was a selection for our bi-monthly book club. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The information about the orthodox Jewish life was interesting to learn about. And the interaction of the group of women was so typical of a small group - regardless of their religious afiliation. It held my attention and I found it hard to put down until it was finished.
A lesson in human nature.......2006-06-13
I would never be able get my husband to read
The Ladies Auxiliary. Which is a shame, because the Ladies in the book should be familiar to everyone of us, with their flaws, rules and hopes.
As a Baptist preacher's kid (I'm a preacher's wife's daughter, too), I've seen similar dynamics in the small, fundamentalist congregations in which I grew up. There are the same loyaties, limits, and failures in the departments of the universities I've attended and in the professional associations and clubs to which I've belonged. It's easy to identify with the Ladies and their joys and pains of belonging to a group and in becoming a member of the group.
If there's any weakness in the book, it's that the Ladies seem too "nice," even as they sin.

"We've been screwed blue and tattooed," quips Hilly Pruitt, upon hearing the news of the closing of Cherished Lady, the local lingerie factory where she's worked a lifetime. The same day the plant closes, Bonnie Duke Cullman, former-deb turned Atlanta-society-wife, has herself been downsized-right out of her marriage and picture-perfect life. In an unlikely alliance, Bonnie, Hilly, and the rest of the ex-bra seamstresses join forces in the "Displaced Homemakers Program" at a podunk community college. Together they endure a midlife survival course where the events of a single year forever alter the way they see the world and their places in it.
Hailed as "a fearless novelist" (Pat Conroy) and "a peerless limner of strong, complex women" (Anne Rivers Siddons), Lois Battle creates a rich tapestry of female friendships in this funny, heartfelt, and poignant story about the surprising power of a group of small-town women.
"The book is so full of good stuff it's hard to know where to start. It has a feel of Places in the Heart, a little of Norma Rae, and maybe a touch of Fried Green Tomatoes. But [it] stands on its own as an intelligent, poignant, funny, wistful novel of expectations, love and rebirth." (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
"This is just the kind of book you'd like to take onto the porch of a clapboard house, to read curled up in a wicker chair with a glass of iced tea at your side." (Houston Chronicle)

Excellent!.......2006-05-24
I loved this book. I could not get enough of these characters. This was my first Lois Battle's book and I look forward to reading more.
delightful, spirit-lifting book.......2006-04-22
As a 44 year AL native, I'm astounded at the negative reviews from other Southerners! I found the characters and events genuine and lovable. I recognized so many of the characters from my years of living in Birmingham.....the Duke, his superficial, stunted wife, the tough factory women, the oppressed divorcee learning to take care of herself for the first time in her life! I've known them all! This is a great read no matter what your choices in life!
Stand up and shout.......2005-06-30
This book caused me to want to stand up and shout in victory for the characters. I loved it from the first page to the last. It reminded me of Thelma and Louise for another generation of women who find themselves as displaced homemakers. I'm new to reading the southern fiction category but so far I'm having a blast discovering gems like this one.
Just couldn't get into it.......2004-10-17
I'm sure this book has something to offer--- but I had trouble with it from the first page. I like for the books I read to make sense in the details-- if they don't, I can't take the book seriously. Right off the bat, we are told that she leaves Birmingham, Ala. for the Alabama coast, and she leaves at sunset. Her father has to give her encouragement to send her on her way. Why does she leave so late-- no reason is given to account for her driving after dark. An hour later she drives into a hurricane. Why didn't she or someone in her family check the weather report. A hurricane doesn't just appear suddenly-- we know from the recent hurricanes that they are seen days, or weeks, in advance.
So she is driving down Interstate 65 in a hurricane, and decides to get a motel room. She stops at a fleabag motel with part of the slgn lights out. Where, on I-65, would anyone find a motel like that? I have been on I-65 dozens of times and from one end to the other, it's all chains motel, and nice ones. No homegrown motels. The real estate along an expressway is too expensive for dumps. It would have been more believabile if she had stopped at a Holiday Inn. Then, she calls her friend Cass, and tells her she will be leaving at dawn and will arrive at Florabama before noon.
Another 5 or 6 hour drive? Get a map. If she was headed to the Ala. shore it would be a much shorter drive than that. Details like this can make or break a book for me. I couldn't take it seriously, and I lost interest.
Not the South Alabama I know.......2004-05-24
I really wanted to like this book. When I started to read it, I was shocked to find that the setting was the community college my mother and I both attended. My mother, my grandmother and I were all born in this area. My aunt ran a sewing machine in the mill that moved to Mexico. In short, this book hardly rings true. It read like the impressions of an outsider looking in. This is not the book to teach someone about women in the South, especially not women in the new South. It sells short the fascinating and colorful women of the Alabama Gulf Coast.

A classical scholar.......2005-07-22
I had the honor of taking several classes taught by Dr. Chateauvert at the University of Maryland. I strongly recommend any book that she's authored or contributed to as her insights are always deep and encourage an even deeper exploration of the subject by the audience.
Brilliant.......1998-12-23
Ms. Chateauvert illuminates an all-too forgotten segment of American history. The relationships and connections she highlights are remarkable. I highly recommend this book.

Women in the Military Who Were NOT Nurses.......2003-10-17
This book opened my eyes to the experiences of women who served in the Army (and the other service branches) during World War II. I found out they were not all nurses or "donut dollies" but serious and dedicated women who left the safety of their homes to "join up". Although Ms. Pollard chose to use language more common during the Second World War, I forgave her as I read because the stories were enlightening. For example, I had no idea how other women saw these soldiers in uniform. The responses were often jealousy and fear that the women in the Army were out to take other women's husbands away from them!
Ms. Pollard reflects on the variety of jobs the women took on while the men went to fight; everything from office work to ferrying servicemen into battle. The amazing thing was that after the military women came home, they donned their kitchen aprons and went right back to housekeeping and bringing up their children with litle or no thought that they had broken through much of the sex bias about women performing "mens work". Some of these "powerful" women themselves failed to connect that they had become role models for their children and grandchildren.
Ms. Pollard also reflects on the "shell shocked" soldiers she saw and worked with at the end of the war. It is gut wrenching.
I highly recommend this book as a means to learn about roles women have played in our contemporary history; a subject LEFT OUT by most teachers in high school and college these days.
