    Book Description

The key to the survival of museum collections is a stable indoor environment; vital to this a well-maintained building with effective environmental services. Environmental Management clearly sets out the theory and practice of achieving an ideal museum environment for both collections and people.

May Cassar emphasizes the need for planning and places the environmental needs of museum managers. She stresses the role of the building as the first line of defense against environmental monitoring and control, and the division of museum spaces into critical areas housing collections and non-critical areas accommodating offices, cafes and communal spaces.

Environmental Management presents a strategic approach to environmental management in contrast to the piecemeal approach to environmental monitoring and control still practised by many museums. However, rather than providing ready solutions and rigid rules, the book introduces principles and ideas on whichto base decisions about creating the ideal environment.

      Book Description

Museums are architectural trend-setters. Culture sponsoring and their increasing role as tourist attractions are guarantees for an ongoing boom in museum construction. A tradition and typology developed over the centuries, the experience gained in recent decades and cutting-edge technology all contribute to the practice of modern day museum building. History and form, site development, floor plan, air-conditioning and climate technology are just some examples of the subjects treated systematically in the first section of this design manual. Some 70 international museum case-studies exemplify solutions and emphasize specific museum design issues such as spatial organisation and arrangement, and lighting. Paul von Naredi-Rainer is an expert on the subject of museum construction and author of the widely read "Architektur und Harmonie" (Architecture and Harmony). Herbert Pfeiffer, Helmut F.O. Müller and Hans Jürgen Schmitz teach at Dortmund University, Oliver Hilger and Gerhard Kahlert at RWTH Aachen.

          5 out of 5 stars A book to treasure.......2004-07-29

          A true guide on technique,
but also to build excitment and passion for this craft.

2 out of 5 stars neither very big nor very useful.......2002-09-19

Pleasing to the eye but it surely fails to live up to the promise of its title. The instructions on constructing and throwing pots is adequate (though scanty). The sections on other aspects of the craft are more an outline than a guide. Disappointed, I searched our local community college library and found several comprehensive instructional texts on ceramics that were bigger and better than this book - though most were written 30 years ago.

1 out of 5 stars Not a helpful resource for learning on the wheel.......2002-06-24

I was disappointed after receiving this book. While it gave a nice overview of different types of ceramics, it did not give the detailed information I was looking for. The summary on wheel throwing was relatively small and gave virtually no information regarding types of wheels or information on selecting one. The description of the book does seem a bit misleading...leading one to believe that this book would be an invaluable, detailed reference source. I found this not to be the case and would not recommend it for those looking for a reference document.

4 out of 5 stars Very Broadly informative.......2002-06-21

This book covers all major types of clay and ceramic activities. If you are interested in only one type (for example, casting in a mold from clay slip)it may not give you as much information as you want. If you are curious about clay, generally, or want an overview to decide what you might like to try, this is a very useful book. The illustrations and directions are very clear.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Ceramics.......2001-11-07

I was so absolute beginner in ceramics and afraid of even touching a clay. In the same day I got the book I've made my first piece. And... was satisfied :=)
Guy is great, I've bought two more books by this author, and was thrilled even more, it's great book to begin with, but also to stick with all the time... full of good information, practical advices, things that you just can't find a person to ask and many many pictures that helps so much.
Anyway, you won't regret buying it.

          5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-07-13

Between this book and Kiln Construction by Joe Finch you can build a very succesful pottery kiln. The information within is nothing less than outstanding in understanding the various kiln options being used around the world. This is a must have book for those with an interest in kilns or in building their own pottery kiln.

5 out of 5 stars Build your own kiln.......2007-03-13

This book was recomended by a college instructor who worked directly with author. I highly recomend this book if you want to build your own kiln.

5 out of 5 stars The Kiln Book.......2006-07-02

This book is beautifully written and very informative. It gives detailed instructions about building several different kilns. It is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars THE one and only GOOD book about kilns.......2004-02-22

This is a fantastic book, even if you are NOT going to build a kiln. This book is packed with cool stuff and good pictures. When I built my kiln (a 4.5 foot gas raku) this was the only book I used. All the other kiln books I have ever seen (a lot I sadly assure you) are complete garbage. This one on the other hand is a gem. Well worth every cent of the cost and very well written, this book is in my top 3 for ceramics books. It is an great book for begginers and ultra experienced potters alike. My one and only problem is that they barely even mention doors. Doors are not terribly important, compared to the other info, but this is a MAJOR fault with this book. I don't know if it will be revised, but that is one thing that is very bad.

the good= comprehensive, well written, cool pictures, good reading, covers all aspects, good resources, all around excellent book.

the bad= NO INFO ABOUT DOORS!!!! god I hate that...

the ugly= more color would be nice but... cheaper=better.

So, in spite of this books one glaring failure there is no better book for everything else covered. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who is even interested in firing kilns. Great book, good buy, get it!

          5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-05-16

If you are thinking about building, firing or repairing a kiln, this is the book. With a fair amount of firing experience, but little knowledge of building, this book gave me the info and guidance to help build my own wood kiln. Get this book.

          Book Description

Many potters undoubtedly dream of the day when they will build a kiln of their own. Others may wish simply to make better use of the kiln they now have, or one they have recourse to. Again, some connoisseurs may want to know more about the kilns that produce the ceramics they love. For all
these people, Building Your Own Kiln presents the knowledge and experience that three veteran Japanese potters have gained from constructing their own kilns.

Hiromi Itabashi, who is known for his abstract ceramic sculpture, provides step-by-step instructions on how to build a small gas kiln that fires some twenty pieces at a time. Because of its size and ease of use, this kiln is ideal for experimenting with different types of firing and various kinds of
glazes. It can be built in a day and operated by one potter working alone.

Roppo Tamura, who works in both artificial and natural glazes, describes the building of an anagama kiln, with its centuries-old history in Korea and Japan. He stresses the importance of the chimney and the "empty chamber" in regulating the temperature and offers many tips on construction and
firing. Altogether he has built over twenty kilns in his lifetime.

Naoki Kawabuchi, who is known particularly for his Nanban ware, describes the building of a "snake kiln," a type that has a history of over 600 years. He chose this type of kiln for its ability to produce a slow, even temperature, which suits his style of Nanban ware.

The kilns of these three potters are profusely illustrated with diagrams and photographs, providing a concrete image of the building process and a virtual introduction to the role of the kiln in the ceramic arts. For all potters thinking of making a kiln of their own, as well as for ceramic lovers
who want to know more about how pottery is made, Building Your Own Kiln offers a wealth of information and shared know-how, provided by three Japanese potters with years of experience in kiln construction.

            4 out of 5 stars Excellent guide.......2007-07-13

Having never built a kiln before this book is an invaluable source for how to construct a pottery kiln. The only reason I gave it four rather than five stars is that it is a British book and the metric system and refractories used are based on what is common in England and different to what is commonly available in America but the techniques and methods can be used for American products with success. I am very pleased with the content as there is no other book that is so clear in explaining step by step, brick by brick how to construct a kiln.

                          Book Description

In Human Well-Being and the Natural Environment, Partha Dasgupta explores ways to measure the quality of life. In developing quality-of-life indices, he pays particular attention to the natural environment, illustrating how it can be incorporated, more generally, into economic reasoning in a seamless manner. Professor Dasgupta puts the theory that he develops to use in extended commentaries on the economics of population, poverty traps, global warming, structural adjustment programmes, and free trade, particularly in relation to poor countries. The result is a treatise that goes beyond quality-of-life measures and offers a comprehensive account of the newly emergent subject of ecological economics. With the publication of this new paperback edition, Professor Dasgupta has taken the opportunity to update and revise his text in a number of ways, including developments to facilitate its current use on a number of gradate courses in environmental and resource economics. The treatment of the welfare economics of imperfect economies has been developed using new findings, and the Appendix has been expanded to include applications of the theory to a number of institutions, and to develop approximate formulae for estimating the value of environmental natural resources.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book!.......2007-01-06

This book is easy to understand. The language is very simple. This book contains the work of Partha Dasgupta and -mainly- Karl Goran Maler during years about several issues, as "genuine investment", "why the NNP is not a good measure to evaluate sustainability?", etc. It is a very good book to understand these issues (and others).
