Presents a unified theoretical treatment, which is complete and rigorous but nonetheless readable. The theoretical treatment requires a variety of mathematical and physical tools. About the Author
The author was formerly Professor of Structural Chemistry and Director of the Molecular Spectroscopy unit in the University of Bradford. He is distinguished for his original scientific work in a number of areas of Raman spectroscopy. His book, 'Raman Spectroscopy', published in 1978 and long out of print, was highly successful. He has been co-editor of many books including the Specialist Reports on Molecular Spectroscopy, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry; he retired as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy in December 1999.

This is a great reference, I've had mine for years and its getting ragged. The general section has all the conversions and definitions you need and they are easy to find. the synopsis of the various areas in physics are very complete and easy to follow and then to put to use.

A Classic of Realism.......2000-05-25

Kracauer's book is an astonishingly detailed look into the cinema. What also makes this work interesting is the novelty that is expressed in the author's writing. Like Eisenstein, there is an excitement about the possibilities of this revolutionary new art (an excitement that seems somewhat scarce in the present). Kracauer explores how film is similar to and yet wholly different from other classical arts including photography, theatre, and literature. Also of interest are his thoughts regarding film's effects upon the spectator in relationship to the characteristics and difficulties of modernity.

Kracauer was an important film critic in Weimar Germany. A Jew, he escaped the rise of Nazism, fleeing to Paris in 1933. Later, in anguish after Benjamin's suicide, he made his way to New York, where he remained until his death in 1966. He wrote From Caligari to Hitler while working as a "special assistant" to the curator of the Museum of Modern Art's film division. He was also on the editorial board of Bollingen Series. Despite many critiques of its attempt to link movies to historical outcomes, From Caligari to Hitler remains Kracauer's best-known and most influential book, and a seminal work in the study of film. Princeton published a revised edition of his Theory of Film: The Redemption of Physical Reality in 1997.

A psychological history of The German film.......2001-12-18

This book shows how the cinema paralleled and sometimes helped form the German psyche. Yet it is more than just a documentary. This brings you from the beginning of the industry to show what Hitler inherited. However the information caries far beyond the political dimension.

I use it more for information on the film industry as a whole for that time and the basis of what we inherited today. It is interesting that from the beginning people complained that the film was to long and inclusive or too short and excluded characters form history or books.

Two good parallel and overlapping timeline books for the era are "Caligari's Children : The Film As Tale of Terror" ISBN: 030680347X Which is a different view on the same subject and "The UFA Story : A History of Germany's Greatest Film Company, 1918-1945 (Weimar and Now: German Cultural Criticism, 23)" ISBN: 0520220692

They tried to capture the feel of the time and of the German actors attitude toward film, in the movie "Shadow of the Vampire" (2001)

Very Thorough, but not Impartial.......2000-03-26

Not that any book can be impartial, but Kracauer's generally socialist reading of films should not be viewed as definitive.

With this point taken into account, this book does offer an imcomparable survey of early German film, its symbolism, and also, the early careers of such actors as Peter Lorre and Marlene Dietrich.

This book is a very entertaining study of these films, and a must for any student of modern Germany, or early film. It does perhaps reflect generally on the modern German society, and WWII in particular.

A brilliant look at early German Film.......1998-07-28

Here it is: probably the most insightful, psychologically brilliant and well researched study of the great early German films (1910-1940) ever written. The author's thesis is this: popular films are popular because they are the dreams shared by a people at any given time. If we study films as if they were keys to the subconscious of the audience, we gain tremendous insight into the culture and mass psychology of the time. The author builds a very convincing case for his thesis that the whole build up to Hitler can be found in the fims that preceded him. I am convinced. This book is also an excellent history of German film as the author is a very good film scholar. Now, if only we had someone around who could interpret the current films of the USA so that we could find out what the future holds in store for us! I loved this book. It was stimulating and I had seen most of the films that he writes about. One advantage todays readers have is that many of these films are no! w out on video.

Siegfried Kracauer's biography of the composer Jacques Offenbach is a remarkable work of social and cultural history. First published in German in 1937 and in English translation in 1938, the book uses the life and work of Offenbach as a focal point for a broad and penetrating portrayal of Second Empire Paris. Offenbach's immensely popular operettas have long been seen as part of the larger historical amnesia and escapism that pervaded Paris in the aftermath of 1848. Excellent Social Study From the Weimar Era.......2004-09-21

Kracauer's "Salaried Masses", finally translated after seventy years, is a fascinating study of Weimar society, with a particular emphasis on the workforce and the dynamics between employers and workers. This analysis, along with his collection of essays entitled "The Mass Ornament", shows a side of Kracauer that surfaces only occasionally in his more popular works like "From Caligari to Hitler", a side that is highly critical of social institutions, especially those structured upon a fascist hierarchy. His discussion on the tactics employers use to train and pacify workers is outstanding (early secretaries were taught to type with the rhythm of music coming from a phonograph; the corporate "trainers" slowly increased the speed of the record until the women were typing with sufficient speed). The role of company-sponsored sports or recreational events (baseball, picnics, etc.) does not escape scrutiny and it's amazing how relevant much of this material is in today's corporate-dominated culture. It's a brief and highly-engrossing read that anyone interested in the functions of social institutions should enjoy.
