Book Description
Spatial Analysis: Modelling in a GIS Environment Edited by Paul Longley and Michael Batty Digital data and information are used increasingly by academics, professionals, local authorities, and government departments. Powerful new technologies, such as geographic information systems (GIS), are being developed to analyse such data, and GIS technologies are rapidly becoming part of the emergent world digital infrastructure. This book shows how computer methods of analysis and modelling, built around GIS, can be used to identify ways in which our cities and regions might be better planned and understood. The contributors to this book are all actively involved in research using geographic information systems. This book will be valuable reading for:
- Geographers, researchers, and regional analysts
- Population theorists and regional economists with interests in large-scale demographic and employment data
- Planners and policy-makers who wish to use GIS to improve their decision making
- Business analysts who wish to explore markets using the most recent advances in digital spatial data technology
- All those interested in geodemographics
Paul Longley is Professor of Geography at the Department of Geography, University of Bristol, United Kingdom. Michael Batty is Professor of Spatial Analysis and Planning at the University College London. United Kingdom.

Description:
Rapid advances in computer and geospatial technology have made it increasingly possible to design and develop urban models to efficiently simulate spatial growth patterns. An approach commonly used in geography and urban growth modelling is based on cellular automata theory and the GIS framework. However, the behaviour of cellular automaton (CA) models is affected by uncertainties arising from the interaction between model elements, structures, and the quality of data sources used as model input. The uncertainty of CA models has not been sufficiently addressed in the research literature. The objective of this study is to analyze the behaviour of a GIS-based CA urban growth model using sensitivity analysis (SA). The proposed SA approach has both qualitative and quantitative components. These components were operationalized using the cross-tabulation map, KAPPA index with coincidence matrices, and spatial metrics. The research focus was on the impacts of CA neighbourhood size and type on the model outcomes. A total of 432 simulations were generated and the results suggest that CA neighbourhood size and type configurations have a significant influence on the CA model output. This study provides insights about the limitations of CA model behaviour and contributes to enhancing existing spatial urban growth modelling procedures.

Good Overview of modern physics.......2006-07-22
I used this book in a Modern physics class and for studying the basics of modern physics. I think Harris does a fair job in explaining the ideas and did not find it difficult to read, he is sometimes too detailed in explanations, but I think for the most part thats a good thing. The lack of examples is also nice,it's better to figure out the exercises without use of examples to guide your way, makes you try to understand the physics better rather than a more plug and chug approach. Overall, I think it's a very good book.
Harris --> really good.......2003-04-03
Great book, Harris tels you evertything on a easy, clear way.
Randy harris is my professor.......2003-03-21
Hey randy harris is my professor at UC Davis and I had him for about 2 quarters so far. he is a great teacher but I agree with most people that his teaching style is conversational and lecturelike at many points. From a person that read his book and listen to him speak are almost one in the same. He often patronizes students because he understands that things are hard to understand in Nonclassical physics yet he lectures you on issues that may seem confusing to us but not him. Oh well that is randy harris for you (aka Chandler of DAvis)
A learning tool that takes a step in the wrong direction........2001-04-17
As a physics student using this book as a main text, I found it of little help as a learning aid. While Dr. Harris does do a wonderful job explaining the Schroedinger equation he does a very poor job at relaiting it to applications and explaining anything else. His writing style is inconsistant, going from conversational to lecturelike often within the same paragraph, and overly complex. Most explinations are overly analizied and the same material can be found using fewer words in other texts.
The problems that go along with each section of this book are also very poor. It is very seldom that the problems from a section actually correspond to the section of the book they are said to. The lack of in text examples, and especially the lack of complete work on the few examples there are, as well as the lack solutions to answers also makes learning from this book very difficult.
Great for learning Shrodinger equation.......2001-01-26
This is one of the best physics text books that I have ever read. The best thing about this book is that it provides a great introduction to the schrodinger equation. Of course, there are other topics of interest in this book such as special relativity and nuclear physics. Chapters 2 through 7 provide a spectacular treatment of how to use the shrodinger equation to understand a variety of physical phenomena such as tunneling. Therefore, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to a solid introduction to the shrodinger equation.

Book Description
Once, in a gods-forsaken hellhole called Koom Valley, trolls and dwarfs met in bloody combat. Centuries later, each species still views the other with simmering animosity. Lately, the influential dwarf, Grag Hamcrusher, has been fomenting unrest among Ankh-Morpork's more diminutive citizens—a volatile situation made far worse when the pint-size provocateur is discovered bashed to death . . . with a troll club lying conveniently nearby.
Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch is aware of the importance of solving the Hamcrusher homicide without delay. (Vimes's second most-pressing responsibility, in fact, next to always being home at six p.m. sharp to read Where's My Cow? to Sam, Jr.) But more than one corpse is waiting for Vimes in the eerie, summoning darkness of a labyrinthine mine network being secretly excavated beneath Ankh-Morpork's streets. And the deadly puzzle is pulling him deep into the muck and mire of superstition, hatred, and fear—and perhaps all the way to Koom Valley itself.

"
It's a game of Trolls and Dwarfs where the player
must take both sides to win ...
It's the noise a troll club makes when crushing
in a dwarf skull, or when a dwarfish axe cleaves
a trollish cranium ...
It's the unsettling sound of history about
to repeat itself ... THUD!
It's the most extraordinary, outrageous,
provocative, insightful, and keenly cutting flight
of fancy yet from Discworld's incomparable
supreme creator ...
Terry Pratchett
Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch admits he may not be the sharpest knife in the cutlery drawer -- he might not even be a spoon. But he's dogged and honest and he'll be damned if he lets anyone disturb his city's always-tentative peace -- and that includes a rabble-rousing dwarf from the sticks (or deep beneath them) who's been stirring up big trouble on the eve of the anniversary of one of Discworld's most infamous historical events.
Centuries earlier, in a gods-forsaken hellhole called Koom Valley, a horde of trolls met a division of dwarfs in bloody combat. Though nobody's quite sure why they fought or who actually won, hundreds of years on each species still bears the cultural scars, and one views the other with simmering animosity and distrust. Lately, an influential dwarf, Grag Hamcrusher, has been fomenting unrest among Ankh-Morpork's more diminutive citizens with incendiary speeches. And it doesn't help matters when the pint-size provocateur is discovered beaten to death ... with a troll club lying conveniently nearby.
Vimes knows the well-being of his smoldering city depends on his ability to solve the Hamcrusher homicide without delay. (Vimes's secondmost-pressing responsibility, in fact, next to being home every evening at six sharp to read Where's My Cow? to Young Sam.) Whatever it takes to unstick this very sticky situation, Vimes will do it -- even tolerate having a vampire in the Watch. But there's more than one corpse waiting for him in the eerie, summoning darkness of the vast, labyrinthine mine network the dwarfs have been excavating in secret beneath Ankh-Morpork's streets. A deadly puzzle is pulling Sam Vimes deep into the muck and mire of superstition, hatred, and fear -- and perhaps all the way to Koom Valley itself.

Customer Reviews:
Vimes: The most grizzled character in all of fiction.......2007-10-09
First: If you have never read a Terry Pratchett book before, don't start with this one. It's not that you won't enjoy it, but you'll enjoy it even more if you start with the first book in the Watch series, appropriately entitled "Guards! Guards!".
If you have already met Vimes, Carrot, and the rest of the Watch, read on.
It's Terry Pratchett's satirical genius that each one of his books manages to be about many things at once. "Thud" is no exception; while most of the action revolves around an ancient and misunderstood battle between the Trolls and Dwarves, there are plenty of sub-plots to go around, including the introduction of a Vampire(ss) into the Watch, the role of accountants in running a police force, the willingness of ethnic minorities to assimilate into the dominant culture, and as always a murder to be solved.
But for me all of that is background to simply watching Vimes be Vimes. Despite the farcical setting of Ankh-Morpork, Pratchett has managed to create one of the most grizzled characters in all of fiction, a man who reminds geeky readers like me of Old Bruce Wayne from Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, or perhaps more appropriately of Eliot Ness. He is relentlessly common despite having risen to a Dukedom and riches. He refuses to let the law be corrupted by the shifting winds of politics. And most of all, he holds himself accountable for justice. In an earlier book, the monarch of the city remarks "It would be a terrible thing, would it not, if people thought they could take the law into their own hands..." to which he replies "Oh, no fear of that, sir. I'm holding on tightly to it."
Now in this book Vimes has a son, and his ideas of what it means to be a proper parent are tied up in the same determination he brings to his work as the Watch Commander. Seeing the father and the police officer interact was for me, the real treat of reading this book.
Also the puns. At least one on every page. And the dialog; the witty, sparkling, spot-on to character dialog. As well as the prose and everything else. Terry Pratchett is a remarkable writer, just read this and everything else he's written!
Pratchett at his best.......2007-09-23
This audio book has kept me amused in the car for days. you can listen to it again and again, always finding new insight and humor..
Spot-on Comic Timing.......2007-08-27
Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch--straight as an arrow, even if he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer--must investigate the death of an influential dwarf leader, who was found beaten to death with a troll club left nearby as an obvious murder weapon. The conflict between trolls and dwarves goes back hundreds of years, and a new war threatens to erupt between the two forces unless Vimes can unravel the mystery of the murder. And if that doesn't sound tough enough, he's also got to deal with integrating a vampire into the Watch, and has to be home by six o'clock every evening, so he can read Where's My Cow? to Sam, Jr.
It can be hard to do justice to a Discworld novel in summary, as it's not the plot that matters, but the execution, and Pratchett is on the top of his game with Thud! The characters, as always with Pratchett, are the novel's lifeblood, and they come to life vividly courtesy of vocal-chameleon Briggs. His voices run the gamut from the straight-British voice of Vimes to the slightly snooty parlance of Lord Vetinari, to the slow, slightly stupid speech of the trolls.
Though Pratchett has been writing about Discworld for years (there's 30 novels in the series, according to Amazon.com's reckoning), the Discworld novels are generally very accessible to new readers, and Thud! is no exception. Pratchett's humor is as sharp and witty as ever, and Briggs's comic timing is spot-on. Like peanut butter and chocolate, Pratchett and Briggs are great on their own, but when you put them together, you've got something that's almost too good for words to describe.
Don't sugarcoat it Pterry, tell us what you REALLY think..........2007-08-23
This is Pratchett's best work so far. It's not just another lively and entertaining jaunt into the inner workings of the discworld, but it is a biting satirical social commentary. Pratchett takes on prejudice, racism, politics and religion, but with his trademark style. He pokes fun at all that humans on THIS planet hold in serious regard.
not one of his best, but still worth a read.......2007-08-14
This book changes gears a couple of times: it starts off as something of a murder mystery, but that eventually becomes just a subplot to the grand scheme. The book seemed a tad unfocused, as if Pratchett himself were improvising as he wrote and did some quick retro-editing at the end to help tie things together. Although I wasn't expecting "great literature" here, Pratchett often surprises me with some truly nifty concepts, so I've learned to just turn my brain off when reading him: go with the flow, and if he sneaks something really neat in, so much the better.
Thud! struck me (nyuck nyuck) as having some good potential, but it didn't really live up to it, or at least could have been better than it was. I didn't hate it, but it didn't click with me as some of his other works have. Still, it had quite a few chuckles, and even a couple of laugh-out-loud moments.
If you're a discworld fan, keep your expectations reasonable, and give it a go.
Book Description
This is the story of a special breed of warrior, the fighter-bomber pilot; the story of valiant men who flew the F-105 Thunderchief ‘Thud’ Fighter-Bomber over the hostile skies of North Vietnam.
Customer Reviews:
A True Classic.......2007-04-24
One of the very best military aviation memoirs I have ever read. This book is one of the cornerstones of my book collection and one of the few books I have read more than once. Filled with action and fantastic storytelling, it is a real page turner that is filled with exciting and poignant moments. I also recommend "Going Downtown", which was also written by Mr Broughton.
re-visited after ten years.......2007-04-02
I first read a paper back version of this ten odd years ago on the long haul flight between the US and Australia, I think I must have lost something in the latter part of the read on the flight, perhaps through ( wine?) tiredness. Anyhow after reading a number of other great books on Thunderchief operations in Vietnam of late I decided to re visit Jack Broughtons book and to say I was gripped be enormity of it is an understatement. Even as an ex military pilot I guess I never fully appreciated the real tough decisions that the leaders had to make...stay on top and risk being thumped by MIGs and SAMS of go below and get fried by flack and SAMS. The part of book where Jack describes the eventfull Sunday is probably the best "tell it like it was" aerial drama I have read.., not to mention how he managed to drag a badly shot up Thud back to an emergency strip...and fighting a war with his hands tied behind his back due to the rules of engagement, enthralling stuff. The only criticism I have is that there were not enough photographs of the other key characters in his story
Classic Vietnam War Memoir.......2007-01-14
Col. Jack Broughton's "Thud Ridge" was one of the first books I ever read on the Vietnam War. I read it in middle school back in the mid-1980s and, while I forgot many of the stories he told in his book, the stories of the high-level military and political micro-management and mismanagement of the war were not forgotten. The book is much more than that, though: it is full of great stories of everyday heroism among the Air Force pilots who flew missions over North Vietnam.
Col. Broughton was an F-105 "Thud" pilot and a senior officer in his wing during the bomber offensive against North Vietnam. The book was originally written while the war was still ongoing, so many of his stories are unfinished (it was unknown if the lost pilots were killed in action or captured), and Col. Broughton wrote from the perspective of "here's what we need to be doing to improve and win this war."
While Col. Broughton clearly has an axe to grind against the superiors in the Air Force and in Washington, D.C., who caused needless waste and loss of life, this book really shines as a memoir of the tough combat in the skies over North Vietnam. Col. Broughton methodically describes how his air wing functioned, how new pilots were brought into the wing and trained for combat, and how they also had to work hard to convert their airbase in Thailand from an airstrip in the jungle into a functioning combat base. And the stories of the daily life-and-death struggle in the air against enemy MiG fighters, surface-to-air missiles, and anti-aircraft guns are some of the best ever written.
This excellent memoir is one of the best Vietnam accounts ever written.
One of the best books on the air war in Vietnam.......2006-01-18
I ahave read this book many times over the years and the story that Col. Broughton tells is what really happened in the skies of N. Vietnam, not what you may have heard on the news or read in a paper. He tells in detail the fallacy of Johnson's and McNamar's stupidity in waging war and their completely ignorant use of air power, not to mention the rules of engagement. THis is absolutely a book that should be read by anyone interested int the Vietnem War. The book alludes to what happened to Col Broughton because of two of his Majors, and the total lack of care by those Generals in command of 7th and 13th Air Force, who ended up hangin him out to dry. His follow up book details this story and is also a book not to be missed. THis book alonf with "Going Downtown" should be made into a movie. Col Broughton was an American Hero in every sense of the word, and a fighter pilot's pilot, and he was let down by the leadership of the very arm of the service that he pledged his loyalty to. He was also the leader of the early Thunderbirds.
4 and One-half Stars........2005-02-22
Well-written. Interesting. One of the better chronicles of the Vietnam Air War. It's a sad book, too. When you consider how the government and American People conspired to send its sons to war and tied their hands in the actual combat. It was the worst kind of treachery that demands: You go and fight, and I'll hold your coat, your horse, and your weapon.
My only problem with the book is there is too much combat action. Over-kill. It ruined the balance and the mix.
Book Description
Information is included as to where each plane served, who flew it and the ultimate fate of each THUD. Contains photographs of different serial numbers, including the two F-105s that were flown on Medal of Honor missions., over 700 color and b/w photographs, 9" x 12"
Customer Reviews:
The Magnificent Thud.......2003-09-06
This book is indispensable to F-105 completeists. It has operational details on every Thud ever built and photos (most color) of almost all of them. (There are just a few they couldn't find a photo of, most because they were the early combat victims.)
There is a bit of general history germane to the F-105, but the clear purpose of the book is to be able to research individual aircraft. For that purpose and for the excellent photos of the 105 fleet, the book is great. If you are looking for a history book, I recommend the Jenkins or Plunkett books, but if it's color photos you want, this is a great book.
