Biology of Hagfishes
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0412785307 |
Book Description
This book deals with widely different aspects of the biology of hagfishes. It presents reviews of recent research, covering topics as palaeontology, systematics, ecology, immunology and reproduction as well as structure an dfunction of important organs and organ systems: skeleton, muscle, skin, respiratory organs, circulatory systems, kidney, endocrine organs, nervous systems and sensory organs. Hagfishes are shown to be far from the sluggish, degenerate animals they were considered a few decades ago. It becomes clearr that in addition to possessing original craniate traits, these unique animals exhibit some highly advanced solutions to life in the cold and dark environment, where they normally live. The book is written by an international team of specialists who integrate the most recent results with previous published accounts on hagfish biology. As hagfishes generally are considered a sister group to vertebrates, with affinities to fossil palaeozoic agnathans, this book will be of great value to all interested in vertebrate evolution.Customer Reviews:
There's more to hagfish than is dreamed of..........2003-08-23
This incredibly detailed text contains chapters on everything from neurophysiology and histology to the anatomy of a 300 million year old fossil hag.
This book is not for the novice! You'd better know your terminology before wading in here. A background in comparative physiology is helpful.
Some things are missing. This book would be improved by a simple overview of hagfish anatomy, a diagram of the odd mouthparts of the hag, and a few pictures of living hagfish that would display some of their unique features.
If you love hags, you'll love this book. I can't wait for the next edition!

The book provides an introduction to the ramifications, both positive and negative, of these ongoing environmental changes for present and future crop production and food supply.
Crops and Environmental Change: An Introduction to Effects of Global Warming, Increasing Atmospheric CO2 and O3 Concentrations, and Soil Salinization on Crop Physiology and Yield integrates a discussion of the physiological effects of environmental change with background information on basic topics in plant physiology. Numerous charts, tables, and figures are included to assist in understanding the empirical effects of the environment on crops.
Topics addressed in Crops and Environmental Change include:
the effects of increasing global atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration
climatic changes associated with increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
the effects of increasing ozone concentrations in the lower atmosphere across large crop-growing regions
soil salinization in areas of irrigated crops

Dynamics of Regulatory Change: How Globalization Affects National Regulatory Policies (Global, Area, & International Archive)
Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520245350 |
Book Description
Critics of globalization claim that economic liberalization leads to a lowering of regulatory standards. As capital and corporations move more freely across national boundaries, a race to the bottom results as governments are forced to weaken labor and environmental standards to retain current contracts or attract new business. The essays in this volume argue that, on the contrary, under certain circumstances global economic integration can actually lead to the strengthening of consumer and environmental standards. This volume extends the argument of David Vogel's book Trading Up, which discussed environmental standards, by focusing on the impact of globalization on labor rights, women's rights and capital market regulations.

Building a Safe Climate, Sound Business future (Bp/Gm/Monsanto & Wri)
World Resources Institute , and General Motors, Monsanto British Petroleum Manufacturer: World Resources Inst ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1569732876 |
Book Description
The detailed paper provides the full background analysis for the companion action agenda, as well as a complete description of the methodology the four partner organizations used to develop it. With international concern growing over the potential impacts of climate change, the partners sought common ground among business and environmental interests to develop a rational policy of this vital issue. They evaluated a range of future scenarios for greenhouse gas emission and carbon sequestration; they considered the possible effects of new technologies, especially for renewable energy sources, conservation tillage, and alternative fuel vehicles; and they considered economic, managerial, and legal barriers to climate-friendly technical advances. Following a comprehensive survey of their own diverse efforts to protect the earth's climate, the four organizations describe the joint program of action they will focus on in the future.
