    Book Description

Presents the most advanced methods of isolating volatile compounds from plants. Explores how different methods yield different isolates, allowing for identification of the volatile substances responsible for the aromas of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Also covers some of their medicinal, physiological, and psychological effects on humans. Describes some of the latest studies on insect attractants and repellants that show the correlation between volatile compounds from plants and insect responses. Includes contributions from notable perfume and flavor chemists, from industry, government, and academia.

      Book Description

The book covers a vast array of methods for the analysis of volatile compounds exuded by plants. Some of these volatiles are of great commercial importance, including the aromas of wines and teas, and volatiles in fruits. Other volatiles such as essential oils can be useful for chemotaxonomic purposes, and a chapter on an emerging method, that of chemometric analysis of such data, is included. Isoprene and ammonia rarely find a place in analytical methods presented for plant materials, but methods for these volatiles are described in this book. The volatiles given off by flowers are also included, and in situ headspace analysis of these volatiles is described, a method of potential use for the study of insect-plant interactions.

        Description:
The sampling of volatile organic compounds emitted by a process industry has been optimised and applied in realistic conditions. Two different fractions were obtained from the emission, one liquid from the condensation of the water vapour which contains the most polar compounds and another fraction of gas, which was trapped on an active carbon filter. Both fractions have been analysed by solid phase microextraction (SPME) with a polyacrylate fibre and then GC-MS. Once the composition of the industrial emission was known, two diffferent systems have been studied for reducing the air pollution. The first one involves a washing system with water and the second one combines the washing system with a chemical oxidation using NaClO-NaOH. A pilot plant has been installed connected to the industrial chimney for the study. Reduction factors of air pollution of 70 and 90%, respectively, have been found. The analytical results as well as the technological ones are shown and discussed.

          Description:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored in the different sections of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the outlet of both the WWTP and rainfall water, and the downstream of the WWTP joining the river in the area or vicinity of an industrial science park located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Levels of VOCs were determined by collecting air samples over several sampling points and analyzed using gas chromatography. Among VOCs identified in the drainage and effluent system in each season, acetone, isopropanol (IPA) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) were the major emission species and maximum concentrations were 400.4, 22.8 and 641.2ppbv, respectively. The ambient air and wastewater sample analysis from neighboring wastewater streams identified pollutants being discharged from unaccounted sources other than the industrial park. According to the 24h semi-continuous monitoring data (27/7/2002-29/7/2002), the total VOC concentration was an average of 93ppbv (acetone contributed ~78%) with a dramatic variation during the day and night. The emission rate of measured VOCs estimated using fixed box model projected an average of 2-4@mgm^-^2h^-^1) during the day and 9-17@mgm^-^2h^-^1 during the night. In addition, the isopleth maps show that the acetone and DMS emissions influence adversely the nearby residential area located at less than 100m downwind from the plant. Eventually, based on this study, an on-line monitoring and alerting system could be built for a long-term performance, and with regular information on the varying pollutants over time construction of a green strategy and creation of a sustainable environment can be achieved.

                  Book Description

The purpose of Applied Geothermics for Petroleum Engineers is to present in a clear and concise form methods of utilizing the data of temperature surveys in deep boreholes as well as the results of field, laboratory and analytical investigations in geothermics to a wide audience. Although some aspects of the subject of this book have been discussed in several previous books and numerous papers, A pplied Geothermics for Petroleum Engineers is the first book on this topic available to the petroleum engineering community.

The objective of the book is to present the state of knowledge and prediction of downhole and formations temperatures during well drilling, well completion, shut-in and production.

Applied Geothermics for Petroleum Engineers is intended for drilling engineers (impact of elevated temperatures on well drilling and completion technology, Arctic drilling), production engineers (temperature regime of production, injection and geothermal walls, Arctic production), reservoir engineers (temperature field of reservoirs, thermal properties of formations and formation fluids), well logging engineers (interpretation of electrical resistance, mud density, and temperature logs), and geophysicists and geologists (interpretation of geophysical data, calculation of the terrestrial heat flow, reconstruction of past climates).

                    Book Description

The study of electrons and holes confined to two, one and even zero dimensions has uncovered a rich variety of new physics and applications. This book describes the interaction between these confined carriers and the optic and acoustic phonons within and around the confined regions. Phonons provide the principal channel of energy transfer between the carriers and their surroundings and also the main restriction to their room temperature mobility. But they have many other roles; they provide, for example, an essential feature of the operation of the quantum cascade laser. Since their momenta at relevant energies are well matched to those of electrons, they can also be used to probe electronic properties such as the confinement width of 2D electron gases and the dispersion curve of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The book describes both the physics of the electron-phonon interaction in the different confined systems and the experimental and theoretical techniques that have been used in its investigation. The experimental methods include optical and transport techniques as well as techniques in which phonons are used as the experimental probe. The aim of the book is to provide an up to date review of the physics and its significance in device performance. It is also written to be explanatory and accessible to graduate students and others new to the field.

                            Book Description

This volume, aimed at researchers in condensed matter physics and materials science, reviews recent developments in the application of electron spectroscopies to a range of low-dimensional materials. In adopting as a common theme the techniques rather than specific materials, the volume amply demonstrates the effectiveness of electron spectroscopies extracting information on solids by their application to a range of phenomena in materials as disparate as high-temperature superconductors, polymeric materials, and charge density wave systems. In doing so, some similarities in the behaviour of these markedly different materials are also addressed.

                                  Book Description

Low-Dimensional Semiconductor Structures offers a seamless, atoms-to-devices introduction to the latest quantum heterostructures. It covers their fabrication; electronic, optical, and transport properties; role in exploring new physical phenomena; and utilization in devices. The authors describe the epitaxial growth of semiconductors and the physical behavior of electrons and phonons in low-dimensional structures. They then go on to discuss nonlinear optics in quantum heterostructures. The final chapters deal with semiconductor lasers, mesoscopic devices, and high-speed heterostructure devices. The book contains many exercises and comprehensive references.

                                      Book Description

This book describes the state of the art on the luminescent properties of porous silicon. The dramatic results of the major international laboratories and groups working in this subject are presented. The majority of the participants agree that a quantum confinement effect and a good passivation of the surface crystallites are responsible for the observed luminescence properties. New characterisation techniques are for the first time presented as a comprehensive survey of the theoretical models. Both efficient and wavelength tunable electroluminescence are demonstrated using liquid contacts and a cathodic injection system. Localised cathodoluminescence in a scanning electron miscroscope and a scanning tunneling microscope is also presented. This book demonstrates that a consensus is emerging on the origin of the visible luminescence of highly porous Si. This novel nanostructure is extending our knowledge into a new area of solid state physics.
