Statistical Analysis with ArcView GIS (r)
Jay Lee , and David W. S. Wong Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0471348740 |
Book Description
Statistical analysis of geographic data has been greatly enhanced in recent years with the advent of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software. Yet GIS users have struggles to synchronize their applications of spatial information with practical, quantitative statistics. ArcView, one of the most powerful GIS-compatible systems, has become the most popular software among geographers precisely because of its capacity for spatial-quantitative synthesis. Now geographers Jay Lee and David Wong have produced the first handbook for applied ArcView use, bringing the theoretical underpinnings of classical statistics into the earth science environment.Employing points, lines, and polygons to model real-world geographic forms, this easy-to-use resource provides geographers with a valuable bridge between theory and the software necessary to apply it. It contains sections on point distribution, point pattern analysis, linear features, network analysis, and spatial autocorrelation analysis. Statistical Analysis with ArcView GIS also features:
Examples that show steps of statistical calculations-as well as ways to interpret the results.
More than 100 illustrations, including statistical charts, maps, and ArcView screen captures.
Helpful end-of-chapter references.
Suitable for professionals as well as students of geography, this book is an important tool for anyone involved in the statistical analysis of GIS data.

Many-Body Theory Exposed! Propagator Description of Quantum Mechanics in Many-Body Systems
Willem H. Dickhoff , and Dimitri Van Neck Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 981256294X |
Book Description
Standard textbooks on the many-body problem do not include a wealth of valuable experimental data, in particular recent results from direct knockout reactions, which are directly related to the single-particle propagator in many-body theory. In this indispensable book, the comparison with experimental data is incorporated from the start, making the abstract concept of propagators vivid and comprehensible. The discussion of numerical calculations using propagators or Green's functions, also absent from current textbooks, is presented in this book. Much of the material has been tested in the classroom and the introductory chapters allow a seamless connection with a one-year graduate course in quantum mechanics. While the majority of books on many-body theory deal with the subject from the viewpoint of condensed matter physics, this book also emphasizes finite systems and should be of considerable interest to researchers in nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics. A! unified treatment of many different many-body systems is presented using the approach of self-consistent Green's functions. Several topics, not available in other books, in particular the description of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, have been included. The coverage proceeds in a systematic way from elementary concepts, such as second quantization and mean-field properties, to a more advanced but self-contained presentation of the physics of atoms, molecules, nuclei, nuclear and neutron matter, electron gas, quantum liquids, atomic Bose-Einstein and fermion condensates, and pairing correlations in finite and infinite systems.

Responding to Young Adult Literature (Young Adult Literature Series)
Virginia R. Monseau Manufacturer: Boynton/Cook ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 086709401X |
Book Description
For too long, there has been a stigma attached to young adult literature: the assumption that because it appeals to adolescents, it can't possibly be worthy of a place in the language arts curriculum. Attempts to legitimize the genre, furthermore, have concentrated only on the literature, not on how readers respond to it.
In Responding to Young Adult Literature, Virginia Monseau uncovers the power of young adult literature to evoke the kind of literary experiences that will keep students reading and lead them to a deeper understanding of literature in general and the relationship between literature and life in particular. The book serves two purposes: to describe and discuss the oral and written response of adolescents and adults to young adult literature; and to explore the significance of this knowledge to the study of literature in the classroom.
Many of the books and articles written about student response to literature focus on techniques or methods that teachers can use to evoke response. In this book, Monseau concentrates on the readers themselves. What would happen if advanced students, who might consider young adult literature beneath them, read this literature in their classes? What would occur if reluctant readers and advanced students got together to respond to a young adult novel? How do adolescent readers respond to the kinds of young adult literature that they read for enjoyment? Can this out-of class response inform literary study in the classroom?
As someone who has read, taught, and written about young adult literature extensively, Monseau can help other teachers better understand what happens when the reader meets the text.

Teaching Through Culture: Strategies for Reading and Responding to Young Adult Literature
Joan Parker Webster Manufacturer: Arte Publico Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1558853766 |
Book Description
An essential guide for using Latino literature in the classroomIn the previous generation of secondary curriculum, the texts read in classes reflected a more limited reality. Today, traditional characters like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are joined by Trino Olivares and Consuelo Harburton.
In an increasingly multicultural global community, teachers are striving to bring more culturally responsive materials to their classrooms. In this trailblazing text, Joan Parker Webster provides instructors with the basic tools to teach young adults Hispanic literature using selected texts and tailored methods for implementation in classes made up of culturally diverse students. She has chosen exemplary narrative works from some of the most respected authors of Latino literature.
Teaching Through Culture introduces teachers to key texts while providing ancilliary information and methods to make teaching and reading experiences effective. A culturally responsive teacher builds on students' prior knowledge and employs appropriate styles of communication and interaction to engage students in learning. Parker Webster affirms that the use of texts that provide cultural connections is the most successful way to actively engage diverse learners and improve their comprehension. When students can see themselves in the stories they read, they encounter familiar ideas and situations, which lessen an often overwhelming and intimidating school environment.
