      Book Description

Auditory User Interfaces: Toward the Speaking Computer describes a speech-enabling approach that separates computation from the user interface and integrates speech into the human-computer interaction. The Auditory User Interface (AUI) works directly with the computational core of the application, the same as the Graphical User Interface.
The author's approach is implemented in two large systems, ASTER - a computing system that produces high-quality interactive aural renderings of electronic documents - and Emacspeak - a fully-fledged speech interface to workstations, including fluent spoken access to the World Wide Web and many desktop applications. Using this approach, developers can design new high-quality AUIs.
Auditory interfaces are presented using concrete examples that have been implemented on an electronic desktop. This aural desktop system enables applications to produce auditory output using the same information used for conventional visual output.
Auditory User Interfaces: Toward the Speaking Computer is for the electrical and computer engineering professional in the field of computer/human interface design. It will also be of interest to academic and industrial researchers, and engineers designing and implementing computer systems that speak. Communication devices such as hand-held computers, smart telephones, talking web browsers, and others will need to incorporate speech-enabling interfaces to be effective.

              Book Description

The result of four years of intensive research in a large multimodal dialogue project involving 12 partners from academia and industry, SmartKom is one of the most advanced multimodal dialogue systems worldwide and is a landmark project in the history of intelligent user interfaces.

The system provides symmetric multimodality in a mixed-initiative dialogue system with an embodied conversational agent. The same software architecture and components are used in three fully operational application scenarios. The theoretical and practical foundations of SmartKom represent a new generation of multimodal dialogue systems that deal not only with simple modality integration and synchronization, but cover the full spectrum of multimodal dialogue.

With contributions by leading scientists in the field, this book gives the first comprehensive overview of the results of this seminal project.

                Book Description

Although speech is the primary behavioral medium by which humans communicate, its auditory basis is poorly understood, having profound implications on efforts to ameliorate the behavioral consequences of hearing impairment and on the development of robust algorithms for computer speech recognition. In this volume, the authors provide an up-to-date synthesis of recent research in the area of speech processing in the auditory system, bringing together a diverse range of scientists to present the subject from an interdisciplinary perspective. Of particular concern is the ability to understand speech in uncertain, potentially adverse acoustic environments, currently the bane of both hearing aid and speech recognition technology. There is increasing evidence that the perceptual stability characteristic of speech understanding is due, at least in part, to elegant transformations of the acoustic signal performed by auditory mechanisms. As a comprehensive review of speech's auditory basis, this book will interest physiologists, anatomists, psychologists, phoneticians, computer scientists, biomedical and electrical engineers, and clinicians.

                  Description:
We report on enhanced processing of speech sounds in congenitally and early blind individuals compared with normally seeing individuals. Two different consonant-vowel (CV) syllables were presented via headphones on each presentation. We used a dichotic listening (DL) procedure with pairwise presentations of CV syllables. The typical finding in this paradigm is a right ear advantage, indicating better processing of the CV-syllable stimuli in the left hemisphere. The dichotic listening procedure involved three different conditions, with instructions to pay attention to the right ear stimulus, the left ear stimulus or no specific instruction. The participants were 14 congenitally or early blind Finnish-speaking individuals that were compared with 129 normal seeing Finnish-speaking individuals. The blind participants reported overall significantly more correct syllables than seeing control subjects. When instructed to pay attention to the left ear stimulus and only report from the attended channel, they were again significantly better than the seeing control subjects. These findings indicate effects of hemispheric reorganization in blind individuals at both the sensory and cognitive levels of information processing in the auditory sensory modality.

                    Description:
The present study examined the cortical activity during processing of vocalic segments by means of whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) to see whether respective cortical maps are stable across repeated measurements. We investigated the spatial configuration and temporal characteristics of the N100m generators of the auditory-evoked field during the processing of the synthetic German vowels [a], [e] and [i] across 10 repeated measurements in a single subject. Between vowels, N100m latency as well as source location differences were found with the latency differences being in accordance with tonochronic principles. The spatial configuration of the different vowel sources was related to differences in acoustic/phonological features. Vowels differing maximally in those features, i.e., [a] and [i], showed larger Euclidean distances between N100m vowel sources than [e] and [i]. This pattern was repeatable across sessions and independent of the source modeling strategy for left-hemispheric data. Compared to a pure tone control condition, the N100m generators of vowels were localized in more anterior, superior and lateral parts of the temporal lobe and showed longer latencies. Being aware of the limited significance of conclusions drawn from a single case study, the study yielded a repeatable spatial and temporal pattern of vowel source activity in the auditory cortex which was determined by the distinctiveness of the formant frequencies corresponding to abstract phonological features.

                    1 out of 5 stars Fundamentally Flawed.......2005-01-07

This textbook is based on the premise that the true variance of the distance-weighted average can be replaced with the pseudo kriging variance of a set of degrees-of-freedom and variance-deprived functionally dependent kriged estimates. The distance-weighted average was reborn as an honorific kriged estimate but that could not possibly make its variance vanish without a trace. Just another textbook were the requirement of functional independence and the concept of degrees of freedom are ignored with impunity.

5 out of 5 stars Applied Mineral Inventory Estimation.......2003-08-20

This is an excellent book covering all aspects of the subject including data collection, verification, and analysis along with geostatistics. Good sections on making sure that the statistically derived answers make geologic sense, a most important aspect. Anyone in the mineral inventory estimation field should get a copy.

                      Book Description

This volume provides one of the first comprehensive reviews combining recent breakthroughs in blue/green semiconductor lasers based on II-VI materials and fundamentally important issues about the development and extension of these lasers to commercial applications. These lasers are on the cutting-edge of technology and could revolutionize areas such as optical information storage and color displays in the next few years. An important focus of this book is on the recent laboratory development of an entirely new class of diode lasers, based on a different family of semiconductor materials, which emit at much shorter wavelengths in the green and blue portion of the spectrum. These new and exciting developments in optoelectronics, which are still undergoing laboratory testing, have the potential of providing a major increase in storage capacity over current CD technology.Besides applications in high-density digital optical storage, other possible aplications for the compact blue-green lasers will be in areas ranging from flat panel displays to multicolor printing to medical diagnostics.

                        Book Description

This detailed reference work provides a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to classical rhetoric as it was practised in the hellenistic period (330 B.C.-A.D.400).

In three sections, it provides a thorough description and analysis of the standard categories of thought, terminology, and theoretical and historical developments of classical rhetoric, as well as providing useful bibliographies. The three sections of essays define the major categories of rhetoric, analyze rhetorical practice according to genre of writing, and treat individual writers in the rhetorical tradition. 27 international scholars from a wide range of backgrounds have contributed to this high-quality publication, which provides an state-of-teh-art overview of the current research and will from the basis of future explorations.

Students of the rhetoric of the New Testament, the hellenistic period, the classical period and the patristic era will all find this volume useful and insightful, as will those with general interests in these subjects.
